Mommy Octopus and Daddy Octopus get some time together

Love in the time of octopuses.
While we were snorkeling on the reef at Vilamendhoo, Maldives, few meters from the shore, we had the great opportunity to see the mating of two wonderful octopuses.
The male octopus has a specialised arm called hectocotylus - it is his penis - one meter long and holding rows of sperm.
The male octopus approaches the receptive female… extends his arm… and transfers a bundle of sperm into the female's mantle cavity.
Both the male and female octopuses die soon after mating.
The male becomes senescent and dies a few months afterward.
The female deposits fertilised eggs in a den and meticulously cares for them until they hatch, forgoing food the entire time; after that, she also dies.
The pain of love.
