projectiles fly in arc from the moment they exit the barrel until they reach the target so if you zero at 400m every single target from 0 to 399m will be hitting above the center of the aiming reticle... the closer is the distance to 0 from the target and the higher the shot will be seen on the aiming reticle above the cross + the closer the target is to 400m the smaller the distance from the center of the aiming reticle and the hit seen on the scope.
After a bullet exits the barrel of a gun it is subjected to gravity, and will start to be pulled towards the ground. This means that no matter what, a bullet will never travel in a straight line. So in order to hit a target more than a few yards away, you have to angle your gun up so that the bullet first travels up, then back down to hit the target. Rather than having to point your gun above what you are shooting, making it difficult or impossible to actually see the target, the rear sight post is raised up so that in order to line up the front and rear sight posts you have to angle the gun upwards. What zeroing does is it sets a zero point, or the point at which the bullet crosses your line of sight. But since the bullet travels in an arc, you actually have two zero points. If we use a zero 300 yards as an example, the bullet will cross the first zero point at 36 yards, and for the second time at 300 yards. The only distance at which you don't have two zero points is 100 yards and under. So when you set a 300 yard zero, you actually shoot at a target 36 yards away so that you don't have to walk 300 yards to see the grouping you just shot, and then walk back 300 yards to shoot another grouping. In theory, if you have a 300 yard zero, you will hit your target if you aim aim right at them at 36 yards and 300 yards. In real life however, we aren't shooting at infinitesimally small points in space, but rather large targets. When shooting under 300 yards the bullet trajectory isn't affected very much, and if you aim at a torso sized target you will almost guarantee a hit at anything up to and a bit past 300 yards. This is what is known as a battle zero. When we start to talk about sniper rifles, having an exact zero becomes more important simply because of the longer range. You still set your zero for for a defined range, and once you are accurate at that certain range, you can adjust the zero. Adjusting the zero is important because at the higher magnifications that a scope offers and the longer distance that snipers engage targets at, you have a smaller margin of error. If you put your crosshair on the center of mass on a target a 500 yards but your zero is set for 300 yards, you might shoot the target in the leg, and if you switch it around so that you are zeroed for 500 yards but shooting a target at 300 yards, aiming at the center of mass might result in a headshot, or the bullet may even sail right over your target. Just as a disclaimer, I am not an expert on this, just a curious Arma veteran that wanted to figure out what the hell zeroing even does. The 36/300 yard battle zero is based off of what the United States Marine Corps uses on their M16's which have a 20 inch barrel and they shoot M855 ammunition. While in a video game this doesn't really matter much because you aren't actually setting a zero, in real life every caliber, every bullet velocity, every barrel length and every combination of these three variables will result in a different first zero point, and even though the first zero point would be pretty close to 36 yards, you would want to know that when you are setting your zero if you aren't shooting out to 300 yards.
