  • We all want our dogs to have long and happy lives. There are 12 things I believe have a massive influence on the longevity and quality of life for my dogs, and 6 things I avoid. In this episode, I’m sharing what I’ve learned through trial and error, talking to experts, and from science, that can contribute to an increased life expectancy for our dogs.
    In the episode you'll hear:
    • About telomeres and what that means for our dogs and us.
    • What I’ve learned from my senior dogs.
    • How stress impacts on the life of our dog.
    • 12 key factors that I believe contribute a long and happy life.
    • Why exercise is important for dogs.
    • What I feed my dogs and the supplements I consider important.
    • About looking after our dog’s teeth and nails and cooperative care.
    • Why mental engagement is so vital for our dogs.
    • The reasons our older dogs need to feel special.
    • About having a great relationship with your Veterinarian.
    • How I make my home mobility friendly for my older dogs.
    • The stress relieving activities that are good for seniors.
    • What I avoid to give my dogs the best chance at a long life.

Our family dog when I was young lived to be about 17 years. The vets said they hadn’t seen a dog that old at their clinic when we had to get her euthanized. She was adopted in Hawaii and was constantly running around on beaches and such until she moved to Colorado. She didn’t get spayed until she was 4, and didn’t even were a leash until she was 5. She was trained with bacon, Lilly from the local pigs in the islands. Unfortunately in her later years she had to stay with a family member and didn’t get the best treatment. She didn’t get veterinary care and eat the best food, and had a couple strokes, but she always got a walk and lots of love.❤️ I’m not going to make the same mistakes with my dog.❤️

Some are great. Many are unaffordable to most people. Osteo and massage weekly? Light therapy? Raw human grade food and supplements? I can't make it happen financially. Also don't forget breed. Highest predictor of longevity is lifespan of parents and relatives.

Such an informative and insightful podcast that every dog parent needs to hear! Thank you so much Susan for bringing us so much value once again!! These are all the things I believe in too - not only for our dogs, but for our own health and well-being too! I will be sure to share this one with every pet parent I know. Health and longevity is something that gets so overlooked in dog training and yet we cannot live a high quality life without it including our dogs so thank you so much for sharing it. There are so many other things that affect our dogs health and longevity besides exercise and nutrition and you hit the bullseye on every single one of them - like weekly nail trimming I knew was super important but the way you explained it, those are things we either forget about or don't always think about - so informative. I would love, love, love, if you could do a more in depth podcast on canine nutrition and nutritional supplements as well as osteopath and homeopathic therapy for dogs. I would give you an endless amount of likes on this one if I could Susan! Thanks again for sharing! Be sure to share this one everyone with every dog parent and pet parent you know - so much great information here!!!!!

Hi Susan, I would love to hear more about exactly what you feed your dogs and how frequently, including their food, herbal supplements, etc. I would also love to know more about their dental care, including how exactly you brush your dogs’ teeth and whether you recommend regular dental scaling. Thank you so much!

My newfs get out every morning but ruby is still a pup so I limit her walking
I’m working up to two hours a day split in morning and night. And my pups are raw, I believe 100% is so good. I know it’s hard for some, but exercise and nutrition I agree so crucial!
I don’t brush teeth Dr lonesdale says meaty bones clean teeth. But I understand why some do.

I so appreciate this information on helping our senior dogs. I wish I'd known all this earlier but at least I can making things better now for my 12-year-old and 10-year-old dogs. Thank you for posting this information! At some point, I hope you can give pointers on finding a good veterinarian for our seniors. I'm having the same problem with dog doctors as I do with human doctors -- writing everything off as just part of aging and there's nothing you can do. Maybe good questions to ask when looking for a new vet?

Wonderful video. SO reassuring that I am doing the best I can for my family - all of them regardless of species. Dumped the microwave over 20 years ago and don't miss it for a moment. Love the air fryer. Everyone in the house drinks filtered water. Gotta find a way to get the rescue pup to stop biting fingers when brushing his teeth. Any and all suggestions appreciated!!

I love comparing myself to your list. There are a few areas that need work but overall we're doing pretty well. (The microwave...). My dog has Addison's disease so keeping stress and tension to a minimum is extremely important, something I'm working on. Thank you Susan, so many gems here I will be rewatching and poring over the transcripts. 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪

Loved this episode! Excited to learn I do many of the same things but definitely taking notes and finding areas where I can improve care and have them heathy as long as possible. And Encore’s story brought me to tears, we have a 15+ setter that had a splenectomy over a year ago, runs around like a “puppy” now.

So much great advice!!! Our 14 year old labradoodle (15 years on Feb 16) is having a hard time on our hardwood floors - I am going to look at those doormats! I am also considering a plush calming dog bed by buddies pet shop (Canadian company!). Have you tried these? Finally, a list of supplements you give would be super helpful. I am also in your HSTD course so I could maybe ask there..? (We also have a 8 month old bc/ Aussie cross and a 10 day old from the same parents arriving in 8-10 weeks). I am constantly recommending you to friends who have dogs!!!

Thank you, Susan. So much common sense, most of these rules I follow for myself. I’m a great fan of Dr Mercola and recently Dr Karen Becker. I hope I’m not too overwhelmed with my own expectations to acquire a dog in a year’s time!
When is a dog’s immune system developed enough to even mount an immune response from a vaccine?
I wonder what the long term independent vaccinated vs vaccine free studies look like for dogs? 😜
These are questions we should be asking vets.

Not sure if it's okay for me to ask here but I'll do it anyway. How do I help a dog with separation anxiety? My sister in law who lives in the same house as my gf and me has 2 puppies and one of them can't deal with staying alone and starts japping and crying as soon as she has to wait in her crate for a little time. Currently I'm watching them as everyone is at work so I try helping her as best as I can. She doesn't seem to calm down. I try to give her treats as soon as she's calmed down a bit but as soon as I leave the room she's crying again. I avoid going in when she's crying so I don't support her behavior but it seems my effort doesn't pay off. Any tips? (FYI the dogs seem to be taking away from their mother way too early so I think that may be one reason they behave like that but not sure) i hope I'm not asking to much and I understand if you won't answer (also sorry for my English)

Do you have suggestions for introducing some engaging games for senior dogs with diminished vision and probably a little cognitive decline? I have a 13yr old husky/collie mix but she is starting to withdraw with her vision loss and also gets a little confused at times. She did rally, etc. back in the day, but she is not really responding when I try to play games with her, etc.

    • @rachelwilbur9512

Yes, you can add fresh food to the kibble. Any additions of fresh dog safe foods are beneficial, especially dark leafy greens (steamed and puréed), raw eggs, sardines tinned in water (rinsed). Check out the Primal Pack channel, a raw feeding channel she gives ideas for enhancing kibble meals with fresh food.
