What I always found most impressive about Deluge was scale of things. When there is marching army, you know there were no CGI effects at the time, and all those people had to be transported there, taught how to march properly, dressed in costumes, etc. There is especially long scene of Swedish army marching that I think would fill heart of any Swedish person with pride, seeing canons being transported, banner bearers, all different units, etc. Also canons in movie were fully functional replicas of canons of the period. Gems, jewels you could see in Jasna Góra interiors were provided from historical treasure that is under monastery care.
Movie was not made only by the filmakers. There were many production companies, factories, arms producers that provided needed materials, constructed sets where needed, produced costumes, etc. Potop is not only a great movie it's a fruit of cooperation and labour of many different people.
We even had some rare cooperation between Poland and Russia since USSR studio provided some help and cameras in exchange for help Polish filmakers provided with some other, Russian movie.
Anyway: great review! I also applaud you for facing pronouncion of Polish names which I know is pretty hard for anyone who never spoke Polish. Really great recap and plot, and great points about movie itself. Cheers!

Yes, that's a masterpiece for sure. My favorite movie. Being Ukrainian, fluent in Polish, I don't need a translation. However, Soviet time Russian dubbing is another masterpiece indeed (even voices are similar), for those, who understands Russian.

Thank you so much for commenting! Means a lot, I want tk share my love of these films with everyone but I'm not sure how well my style goes over with people, perhaps a bit long winded, so it's nice to hear that someone really enjoyed it

I’ve always considered this movie to be just good. Your review changed my perspective.
The story of Kmicic is so popular in Polish culture that you sort of know the plot before seing the movie. Your review made me realize how great of a story mr Sienkiewicz has written.

Definitely one of my favorite movies of the 1970s, I prefer original 1974 4 Hour and 47 Minute version, the Redivivus version is so butchered, cut out so much.
I wish this movie won the academy award for best international feature film.

It really should have. Of the 3 it's my least favorite and it's still a masterpiece in my eyes

That's actually not the original version. The actual, truly original version is 5hrs 15mins long

Original was blocked world wide for copyright stuff. Not sure why, I took the background music out, hopefully that's enough

Why not learn a bit to not slaughter the polish names. Not Kimics but Kmicic (Kmitschitsch =German). They name him so often in the movie.
The sound they play whenever the Swedish army is on screen is a very Shostakovich like rendition of "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott" by Martin Luther. Chosen to underline the protestant - swedish versus katholic - polish aspect of movie.
