  • @peterjin3549

    Actually blacklashes happen because the line is going through the guides slowerthan than the spool is spinning.
    You want to slow the spool with your thumb so that the line leaving can catch up to the spool spin rate.

    Great advice! I certainly agree casters need the basics... Could you offer intermediate advice to casting on a party boat where it seems that the pros are going starting the cast somewhere between one and two o’clock? Thanks for all you videos!

    • @jigslingersfishingchannel3713
      @jigslingersfishingchannel3713  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      john444jc Yeah when fishing on sportboats you’d definitely need to be able to start your casts from less than ideal angles. I’ll do that vid down the line. Once you master 3-9 you can start shortening your starting position to 2-9 and so on until you’re comfortable with making decent distance from anywhere. 👍

  • @LTTang

    Ha. It would saved me much cussing if you had made this video a few months ago. I'm learning on the conventionals and keeping getting backlashed. I was casting like a baitcaster with no thumb play but just using the spool tension knob. I didn't realize that you should keep your thumb on the spool. I finally figured that out literally 2-3 weeks ago. I also realized why "Band Aid" power is necessary on braided lines. I got a nice rash on both thumbs after a session of casting. Great vid and great advice like always.

    What is your opinion on a narrow spool vs reg for surface iron fishing i.e. torium 16 vs 20? With a 100 yard top shot does a narrow spool diameter decrease too much to pick up line vs a normal spool?

    • @jigslingersfishingchannel3713

      @540slinger 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's really a personal preference thing. With certain set ups I like the braid to short leader. On others I go with about 50 yrds of mono topshot. Try both and see what's comfortable to you.

    • @jigslingersfishingchannel3713
      @jigslingersfishingchannel3713  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ethan huynh Like Jeff said it’s a personal preference. I like braid because it allows me to use smaller reels. Braid is definitely harder to cast so if you’re not that proficient with casting start with mono first. Then make the switch after you’re comfortable. Backlashes with braid are nasty. ✌️

    • @gunslingergg78

      From what I have tried (new to casting conventional myseld) is braid is much harder to cast if its dry, even if you just reeled in 15 minutes ago. I do have a Lexa 400HD that I run braid with short leader that doesn't pass the pole eyes for going into kelp beds. Otherwise adding a 100 foot of mono help cast (for me) jigs or live bait. Mono also helps keep the fish hooked because of it's elasticity. Just my thoughts.

    Quick question. Is the Seeker White Tiger 7x built around the salas 7x light or heavy? Thanks

    • @jigslingersfishingchannel3713
      @jigslingersfishingchannel3713  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Susan Bates 7x light. Which is 3.5oz so it’s on the bigger end for surface iron.
      The 1st gen was produced too light to handle that size jig. 2nd gen could cast them but it was too stiff. Seeker got it right with gen 3 for throwing the 7x. So if the wish to cast the 7x iron with a white tiger go with gen 3. That’s the current gen and it comes in all sorts of colors.

    • @jigslingersfishingchannel3713
      @jigslingersfishingchannel3713  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zach_ Kay I think one reason is Shimano has a bigger following in SoCal. Another is the Fathom has that funky way of clicking into freespool. Some people aren’t used to it. I have both the Torium 16 and Fathom 25N that I use for surface iron. For me the Torium gets more use because it’s a little more compact and fits in a Tib clamp making it more versatile for different rods.

    A real good iron casting video should be done from a boat! No way you’ll have the freedom to cast “3 to 9” on party boat......do that and you’re gonna hook someone, lol. Look around and see that the old timers do in the bow, that’s we’re all the iron guys go....

    • @jigslingersfishingchannel3713
      @jigslingersfishingchannel3713  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Alex Morataya I said in the video this is a best case condition to practice in. I even said on a boat you’ll rarely have a chance for a full backcast.
      A place like this is where a person who’s not proficient needs to practice. Not on the bow of a boat during a hot bite. You gotta learn how walk first before running. ✌️
      There are spots for a backcast that long on a boat. You can see them throughout my videos. Even a few in the highlight portion in the beginning of this video. But you gotta know what you’re doing to take advantage. Those aren’t the most ideal times to be practicing.

      Cody 0_o I didn’t say it wasn’t a great video, those were not my words and I’m glad you got some tips with the being said, casting from a dock like he mentioned is a good idea for new ppl casting irons, you’ll learn the basics of casting and the basics for your equipment. There’s a big difference between casting on a sports boat with ppl around and from a dock. Kinda like practicing football and a real game....2 kinds of speed. Not knocking his video, just saying that casting 3pm to 9pm is almost impossible on a sports boat, that’s all.

      Alex Morataya To me it’s like hitting golf balls on the range vs hitting them on the course. You can see when someone has a good swing on the range that it’ll be good on the course as well. I’ve watched all of this guy’s videos and he has very good mechanics. No doubt he can cast from anywhere. There are comments from people who have fished with him that said the same. I’m glad he took the time to share some things that could help people like me that still backlash almost everytime I’m out there. Lol
