2:44 That's really only a problem if you're counter-steering for too long in a drift, like if you're drifting a right turn and you hold the joystick left to go wide, you'll skid and lose speed after a few seconds. But if you hold right or neutral stick, or hold left and briefly flick right and back left again like when you're building a mini turbo, then it won't cause you to skid out.
I didn’t even know it was a mechanic because like you said flicking vs holding and I always just flicked the stick around to hold my turning radius and have no recollection of spinning out

I love this game. This is the first game I’ve ever played too but the downside is that you don’t get any rewards for winning a grand prix like in Double Dash, Mario Kart DS, Wii etc
Mario Kart 64 is still considered to be the best one in the series. My favorites are 64 for the battles and Double Dash for the races. Even as kid I didn't like Super Mario kart that much. Kart Wii and Kart 8 are great games as well.
The answer is subjective, and as someone who was there for the release of the first Mario Kart, imho, YES! Super Mario Kart on SNES may be hard to go back to.. but 64 is perfection in it's own hard to explain way, especially with a 2nd player in VS or battle. Rainbow Road was always our tie breaker course back in the day lol. I do agree with your sentiment on Royal Raceway. As far as Banshee Boardwalk and Toads Turnpike (and Bowsers Castle.. and Yoshi Valley for that matter) are just a case of gettin' gud. I'm glad you enjoy the game!
This was the first MK game I played and one of the first games I've played. Shame I never owned it on the N64. That being said this one aged poorly with the controls and the content. This game is timelessly fun. If for any reason you ever feel like you've squeezed everything there is to get out of it, or if you're just feeling particularly bored or curious one day - play it on an emulator on like 150-200% game speed. Its INSANE. Battles become a manifestation of pure chaos, especially if you put in item cheats like infinite green shells or bananas. And racing on otherwise mundane tracks like Wario Stadium becomes as exhilarating as a pod race. One of the most fun gaming experiences I've EVER had, and just in the last few years.
Mario Kart 64 is basically the game that Expanded upon Super Mario Kart. It’s not super Janky anymore thanks to the Easier controls & not a single Racetrack doesn’t not have Dead Ends that was unnecessary.
Honestly, it depends on your game preferences rn. If you‘re not used to seeing the possibly worst graphics chosen for a game like this, then you might have a hard time getting into it. The graphics are like that so you can play 4 player splitscreen, I couldn‘t find another explanation for that. What is worse, is that the handling of the karts, doesn‘t feel like it corelates to the sprites of the drivers. Yet, the controls feel like an arcadey go kart sim. The game overall is quite fun. You just have to get used to it. The Npc drivers cheat tho. Nomatter how much you are in front, nomatter which item you have that speeds you up, the npc‘s are always stuck right behind you.
I used to pray I’d get way too many green trio shells, so I could have more of an obstacle course the next laps on Rainbow Road :P Love this game so much.
I had a great childhood in almost every aspect, but the N64 still holds some of my fondest memories. Mario Kart 64 was one of my favourite games and I played it so much with my siblings and friends. Thanks for the nostalgia inducing video :)
I might get the snubbing of the game due lack of content and crazy rubberbanding but it's the best one to just pick up and play and no fluff attached and again that is what matters the most.
Bowser's Castle was always my favorite course in the game. Just enjoyed the aesthetic of the course, the difficult turns that made it more fun to play when mastered, and the music just sounded so dark and evil but at the same time Rated E for everyone. With that being said, the game will always have a special place in my heart since i got it around release as a child but i went back to it last year or so and i would rather play the newer Mario Karts. The main reason is the rubber band AI and how on 150cc if they disappear out of your sight they turn into straight gods and its near impossible to catch them.
As someone who grew up with it absolutely it’s such a fun one, I even recently went back to it and had a blast, for people who didn’t it’s a toss up some will find enjoyment out of it and some won’t be able to go back to it, for some reason to me Mario Kart 64 is the most simple fun you can have out of any Mario kart game
the angry video game nerd taught me that when something is outdated like tiger electronic handheld games you don't want to come back to it which is certainly not the case with this absolute gem of a game it is retro which means it has aged like a fine wine.
My first is Super Circuit so i know the feeling. I still think Super Circuit is fun but it does gives an old school mario kart feel being a blend of Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64.
Funny you said you didn't know what Snes was until MK wii. I was familiar with the older Mario Karts when DS came out in 2005. I'm literally the same age as the 64, so I was pretty familiar with the system despite never owning one. Like you, nobody I knew had an SNES, but I did play my older sister's Genesis once when I was 7. Crazy how there's a big gap between the 16 bit generation and the 5th generation of gaming. Nowadays we think the n64 as old school, but for guys who grew up playing 8 bit and Atari games would see it as more new school.
Do you have any idea how old you just made me feel? I was playing video games a few years before even the NES. I still remember spending all of my time during my high school graduation open house looking through the Nintendo Power with Super Mario 64 on the cover.
I wish I got to play mario kart 64 alot more when I was a kid,I only got to play it at the eye doctor's when I was a kid, never got it and I never understood the reason why,how do parents expect you to get better at racing games if you don't have them and only got to play for 5 minutes at the fucking eye doctor
Here's a fun interesting fact, Rainbow Road from MK64 also made another appearance in a faster paced, more intense N64 racing game called F-Zero X and that one also had its own rock cover of the song if you had the Expansion Kit of X for the 64 Disk Drive. 🎸🎵🤟
Mario Kart never returned to buttery smooth mechanics like these. Every sequel was comparatively clunky. The only thing holding 64 back is the 2d player sprites
I actually like Super Mario Kart more than 64 nowadays. Although i think Super Circuit kind of does better than both for the most part. I do wish Super Circuit`s SNES tracks were better treated though. I used to play this game a lot and preferred it over Super, but it isn't really special anymore for me, but it still is worth a shot for some one who has never played it.
I compare MK64 a lot with Melee. It's rough around the edges by modern standards but also deceptively deep with it's mechanics. And it was my first n64 game so there's a ton of nostalgia factor for me too. The speedrun/leaderboard scene for the game also goes hard (source: summoningsalt).
Everyone always talks about how Diddy Kong Racing is the better game because of its Adventure mode. And I understand the argument. But from an experienced players pov, Mario Kart 64 is more fun to return to because the “rubber banding” cpu’s keep the game from becoming too easy overtime. Where in returning to Diddy Kong Racing, there’s no difficulty in the game unless you play Adventure mode with the coin challenges.
i thought i was the only one who prefered the neon character art in the original n64 rainbow road. not that 8s version wasnt amazing but still. also the laughing thwomps in n64 bowsers castle becomes less scary when you realize it's just warios laugh slowed down. and yes the region you play matters because luigi, peach, toad, and wario all have different voices in japanese, and the bowsers castle thwomps sound different in japan because wario was voiced not by charles martinet but thomas spindler. he also voiced wario in mario party 1 and 2 as well as super circuit (which re-used the japanese mario kart 64 voices)
MK64 was my first MK game, racing game, and my second ever N64 game. I like to revisit it every once in a while, but, in my opinion at least, the answer is no. It doesn’t hold up well at all, and it can feel so frustrating to play.
I've read somewhere that this game was the most technical from all the series and I have to agree with that! Not only you can escape the banana traps, you can keep the blue shell behind you (just before shooting it) so you can smash other players like a wrecking ball with your cart, there are no items to counter the blue shell if you are in 1st place, you can control the rebounding of your cart when you are falling from a long jump (mostly from ramps).... an overall far superior version of them all in my opinion. Great video mate
Juggling mini turbos through long corners that seem to never end and being able to chain them is an art form Edit: my favourite in the series as it has the fewest gimmicks and the technical challenge is what I enjoy not random item luck
My buddy and I spend HOURS at work playing this on my iPad🤣. I’m way better than him but man sometimes he gets lucky AF with 2nd place LIGHTINGS! Like 2nd place LIGHTINGS 🤣 That’s the only way he can win sometimes. This game is such a blast if you have people who have gotten really good at it. The controls are for sure something to get used to😆 The boxes are completely broken lol
The N64 is one of the best consoles ever created form Nintendo and revolutionized 3-D gaming and started all the franchise that we still played today if you do not own an original N64, you’re missing out
Hell no! This game sucks. I always hated how difficult this game was as a child. Now due to the internet and technology, I find out that this game cheats like a mf? CPU behaves extremely different when they're not on screen. It clips through walls, rides through hazards without penalties, hover in the air, shell and bananas don't stop them, and worst of all, two CPUs will always follow along with your pace no matter if you have a golden mushroom. It's an extremely cheap rigged game and I never liked it.
It wouldn’t say this game sucks but i do heavily agree with you on the fact that rubberbanding AI heavily brings down this game’s single/ 2 player replayability. The fact that no matter how well you play, the Ai will always be right behind you is bullshit. Mortal Kombat 2 type of shit going on in the background
Thank you for this walk down memory lane! I loved this game so much as a kid. I still vividly remember the day I got this game (it was my third game for the N64, after Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings). It was a sunny, but seemingly ordinary elementary school day. Yet, on my walk home from school I somehow felt like this day was kind of special. And it was: When I got home, my parents surprised me with this game. No birthday or somilar involved, just a gift that came out of nowhere. Even though the game aged quite badly in some parts (mostly graphics and AI), I absolutely have to agree with you about the music. Nostalgic bonus points aside, it sounds like there was more love involved into composing these tracks, giving them almost a magical ring to it. And yes, the Kalimari Desert music was one of my favorites as well, although my very favorite piece of music in this game is the end game credits track, which I really wish you would have mentioned it in your video. That track already left me in awe as a child and to this day, it almost brings a tear to my eyes everytime I hear it. What also made the game so much fun was the crazy wild short cuts, that often were based on bugs or at least oversights in development. My personal favorites were veering off to the left at the big jump right after the start on Rainbow Road by using a mushroom, aiming for the part of the track that went there, making you skip a vast section of the track. On the big jump on Royal Raceway, you could also veer to the left, also using a turbo mushroom. Although you never could make the jump to the part of the track that you could see there, Lakitu still would place you there, when you only made it far enough before falling into the water. Additional fact about the game: Nintendo always lied about the stats of the three different driver classes. It was always suggested that the heavy weights had the highest top speed (Untrue! Light weights had it.) and the lowest acceleration (Also untrue! Medium weights had the lowest acelleration. And also the lowest top speed...). Which in reality makes the light weights the best pick by far, for they both had fastest top speed and acceleration. And rendering both medium weight characters completely useless. Although that screaming engine sound of Donkey Kong's kart made him a vailable pick by itself...
Haven’t watched the video yet but I’ll give my take. I’ve been replaying every mainline Mario Kart game from Super Mario Kart to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to rank each entry’s tracks from worst to best before ranking all 284 tracks once I finish 8 Deluxe. I did Mario Kart 64 earlier this year and overall I do consider it a good game and recommend playing it if you are given the chance to do so. Most of the tracks are enjoyable though most struggle to be better than good I’d argue. Many suffer from bad design issues or simply aren’t interesting enough to justify being better than good. Examples include Royal Raceway where it’s misleadingly easy to fall off the track (sometimes while even being on the road), DK’s Jungle Parkway with the sharp 90 degree turn immediately after the big jump though you can angle your kart off the jump to account for this, Yoshi Valley with the long respawn time due to how long it takes to fall to the floor, Wario Stadium with the ending jump that if failed will force you to replay a surprisingly long chunk of the track, and the worst case Rainbow Road which despite looking gorgeous visually and despite having an incredible soundtrack is ruined by excessive guardrails and it’s insane length making a track with potential to be amazing instead a slow drawn out hell to endure. Despite several tracks having significant design flaws most do remain enjoyable and a fun time overall. I also enjoy the various shortcuts this game has to offer and in general it’s a pretty fun game to simply mess around in to see what craziness you can make happen. I think it’s also worth mentioning the CPUs which are notorious for their rubber banding and overall I’m not a fan of them in this entry. If you can I’d argue it’s much better to play with friends than alone. This could be said for any Mario Kart entry since playing with friends is awesome but it’s especially true in MK64. Multiplayer exclusive versus mode is my preferred way to replay this game’s tracks but of course the tracks aren’t everything. The battle mode is surprisingly good with 4 solid battle stages to pick from (Block Fort being a fan favorite for good reason) and the last man standing balloon battle works very well too. This is certainly one of the strongest battle modes in the series to date but unfortunately is multiplayer exclusive. Is this game worth playing? If you happen to get the chance to play it when you are over at someone’s house or something like that then yes I’d say so. Is it worth going out of your way to specifically purchase though? No I don’t think it is unless you really want to. All tracks but Wario Stadium have been remade and basically every remake is superior to the original version. All the battle courses except Double Deck have been remade and while this is among the stronger battle modes in the series, other ones exist. I can’t say it’s worth buying a game just to play the battle mode lol.
@ I watched the video and it’s well made. Good job.😁 I especially agree with you on the music being really good. The Credits, Rainbow Road, and Toad’s Turnpike all stand out especially as songs I love from MK64 with the credits being among the best songs in the entire series imo. Never grew up with MK64 and yet the credits hits like a train every time in terms of the emotions which to me is incredible. Also I wanted to clarify that while I don’t like Rainbow Road in this game gameplay wise, I do love its visuals. Easily the prettiest track in this game and to this day one of the best tracks visually in the series as well which is very impressive given how old this game is.
after playing mario kart 64 and tour over the years i can conclude tour has a copy of 64 CPU but worst, in tour they now drop bombs and when you throw an item it triggers the game to fire all of the CPUs items which hit you and they speed up like in this game but way worst in tour on 150CC.
Its not people be living off NOSTALGIA bro.. it was a great game for the time it came out.. it is definitely outdated now. I would rather play CTR or DKR before I come back to mario kart 64
"Legitimate preservation effort" From Nintendo, hah! It's a combination of convenient layout re-use and nostalgia bait, preservation's got nothing to do with it.
Way too many memories attached to this game ! I loved the hell out of it, especially the drifting and the predictability. I never played the ones after that because I didn't buy any consoles. I love that game to death. The new ones seem dull and tame. But hey, I'm a 90s kid. I can't help it. I played Mario Kart Tour and...whatever...the N64 version will always be #1 in my heart. It is my first and last Mario Kart.
Mario Kart 64 is the worst in the entire series for me. Super Mario Kart was way, way better. The game isn't bad, but it's certainly not up there with the best in the series.
It’s a tricky question. It’s like asking “what’s the best movie of all time?” The top of these prestigious lists often use old movies from the 1930s-1950s. Are these actually the “best” movies? Would a common young adult of today really enjoy those movies? Or do those movies just have the biggest impact that we see nowadays? “Best video game of all time” lists are often similar and usually feature older games, often games from the Nintendo 64 era. While I have a lot of nostalgic bias, the reality is that most of the time, a young person today would rather play Breath of the Wild instead of Ocarina of Time, or Mario Kart 8 deluxe instead of Mario kart 64. Really, the 80s and 90s video games will likely feel more and more dated as time goes on. I never played Super Nintendo, so when I try to play Super Nintendo Mario kart, I don’t enjoy it at all, the visuals and controls are just awful to me. But someone with nostalgia might think it’s great.
Agreed. I was born in 89, and I never even knew about the existence of the SNES until around the year 2000, and no matter how good a game like Super Mario World might have been back in the day, it will always be just some game to me.
IMO the wide courses on modern Mario Kart make the games way too easy and less fun. I assume they made them this way to accomodate more racers since there was only 8 on the N64. Grounded Blue Shell is also way more fair than the flying one, because it hits everything in its way until it gets to you. The flying one in newer games punish only the first player. How does that help the guy who launched it from way far back? Terrible design. This game is easily the best MK for me. I lose interest quickly with the other ones. This one, I could play it all day.
The kart physics in 64 are just tighter. I really feel like skill wins out in Vs.

Not mentioning the end game credits music in the soundtrack section is a HUGE oversight.

Here's a fun interesting fact, Rainbow Road from MK64 also made another appearance in a faster paced, more intense N64 racing game called F-Zero X and that one also had its own rock cover of the song if you had the Expansion Kit of X for the 64 Disk Drive. 🎸🎵🤟
Also I’m the big sis that played this on LodgeNet, it was a great time 🥰
Ayyyyy thanks for showing up here! Haha
Dumb question. We still play it today with family. Still a great game
This was the first console game I ever played! I played some DOS computer games prior.
Super Mario Kart is my favorite. ❤
Played this for the first time in years and dang near cried from joy lol
It was great to do some multiplayer this holiday!
Mariokart64 has ALOT more in common with 8 deluxe which is a 22 year gap, than it does with super mariokart witch was a 4-5 year gap.
Mario Kart never returned to buttery smooth mechanics like these. Every sequel was comparatively clunky. The only thing holding 64 back is the 2d player sprites
hell yeah, mario kart 64 still worth playing, even in today's standard.
for me, it's more well balanced.
Hell yes it is ! I still love playing SNES Mario kart as well !
That intro!!
this game gives me such nostalgia. Great video and I can't believe you have less than 1000 subs!
Thank you very much! I haven't done this for all that long, in time we will get there!
Good video bro
Thanks bro!
@VGPreserve yes indeed. Keep it up!
i thought i was the only one who prefered the neon character art in the original n64 rainbow road. not that 8s version wasnt amazing but still.
also the laughing thwomps in n64 bowsers castle becomes less scary when you realize it's just warios laugh slowed down.
and yes the region you play matters because luigi, peach, toad, and wario all have different voices in japanese, and the bowsers castle thwomps sound different in japan because wario was voiced not by charles martinet but thomas spindler. he also voiced wario in mario party 1 and 2 as well as super circuit (which re-used the japanese mario kart 64 voices)
Oh yeah I forgot that was just Wario slowed down!
i hate the rubber banding ai
MK64 was my first MK game, racing game, and my second ever N64 game. I like to revisit it every once in a while, but, in my opinion at least, the answer is no. It doesn’t hold up well at all, and it can feel so frustrating to play.
Super Circuit and prior…..Honestly can’t see myself going back as often as I do for Double Dash onwards 😅
Great vid
Thank you very much!
@VGPreserve anytime. I really enjoyed it.
Little Brahhhhh Keep making millennial content we need this to feel alive
I just use Project 64 to emulate the game. I play the Japanese version.
Juggling mini turbos through long corners that seem to never end and being able to chain them is an art form
Edit: my favourite in the series as it has the fewest gimmicks and the technical challenge is what I enjoy not random item luck
@@simonn2045 Excatly this first introduction to mini turbos was a skill you have to earn with blood
Thank you! It's a really fun game still I'd say!
I feel like modern Mario Kart games are all about drifting as much as humanly possible. I hate it
All Mario Karts are worth playing at all times.
Oh, the perspective of historical preservation is super interesting! I’ll definitely check out your other videos.
Thank you very much!
It’s on the switch let’s play together and truly find out lol
My buddy and I spend HOURS at work playing this on my iPad🤣. I’m way better than him but man sometimes he gets lucky AF with 2nd place LIGHTINGS! Like 2nd place LIGHTINGS 🤣 That’s the only way he can win sometimes. This game is such a blast if you have people who have gotten really good at it. The controls are for sure something to get used to😆 The boxes are completely broken lol
The N64 is one of the best consoles ever created form Nintendo and revolutionized 3-D gaming and started all the franchise that we still played today if you do not own an original N64, you’re missing out
I play it every day at some point. Not outdated
Mortal
Kombat 2 type of shit going on in the background
Glad I could take you down memory lane with this one! Tons of nostalgia for me of course, and glad to hear you also dig the music!
Uhh do ya know how to Drift good like me? Is my Question? And you can brake drift here to
Haven’t watched the video yet but I’ll give my take.
Great points all around! The video touches upon a few of those as well. Glad to see you agree with me about Royal Raceway in particular.
Easily the prettiest track in this game and to this day one of the best tracks visually in the series as well which is very impressive given how old this game is.
this is the best one!!!
Best game❤
You dont spin out from drifting too long. You spin out if you wiggle your joystick back and forth too fast.
With the rom hacks for this game, Id say yes even more
after playing mario kart 64 and tour over the years i can conclude tour has a copy of 64 CPU but worst, in tour they now drop bombs and when you throw an item it triggers the game to fire all of the CPUs items which hit you and they speed up like in this game but way worst in tour on 150CC.
I am playing Mario kart 64 via emulation
Its not people be living off NOSTALGIA bro.. it was a great game for the time it came out.. it is definitely outdated now. I would rather play CTR or DKR before I come back to mario kart 64
I’d like to imagine toads Turnpike is the theme song to me getting absolutely destroyed and wandering down to the gas station for snacks at 3 AM
Lmao!
The best hands down
skill issue, you just keep resetting the drift
"Legitimate preservation effort"
From Nintendo, hah! It's a combination of convenient layout re-use and nostalgia bait, preservation's got nothing to do with it.
i loved this game as a kid but yeah. this shit was too old to play 15 yrs ago
Mario Kart 64 was rendered outdated and useless in 1999 upon the release of CTR: Crash Team Racing.
Prefer Diddy Kong Racing tbh
Way too many memories attached to this game ! I loved the hell out of it, especially the drifting and the predictability. I never played the ones after that because I didn't buy any consoles. I love that game to death. The new ones seem dull and tame. But hey, I'm a 90s kid. I can't help it. I played Mario Kart Tour and...whatever...the N64 version will always be #1 in my heart. It is my first and last Mario Kart.
The new ones are good, too, though. No shame in trying them. Broaden your horizons a bit.
Yes besides Diddy kong racing and some other racing games of course. If you want emulate it why not? Who cares about the greedy corporations.
Emulation is fine, I just prefer playing on official releases. More power to those who do it, and it's very important for game preservation.
I’ll answer this myself yes it’s worth playing.
Mario Kart 64 is the worst in the entire series for me. Super Mario Kart was way, way better. The game isn't bad, but it's certainly not up there with the best in the series.
You don't know how to drift right.
N64 Rainbow Road Is My 2nd Favorite Rainbow Road Behind 3DS Rainbow Road
Who you trying to make mad bro lol I kid I kid…
It’s a tricky question. It’s like asking “what’s the best movie of all time?”
The top of these prestigious lists often use old movies from the 1930s-1950s.
Great points for sure!
Agreed. I was born in 89, and I never even knew about the existence of the SNES until around the year 2000, and no matter how good a game like Super Mario World might have been back in the day, it will always be just some game to me.
Best Mario Kart? No
Worst Mario Kart? Maybe
Still worth playing? Yes
In my opinion? Yes. I just don't think it's the best racing game or even Mario Kart of all time.
