    As I'm watching this, I'm imagining that I'm 9 years old, at my Grandparent's house. After I finish watching my morning Saturday cartoons, I would go play Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis for a few hours, eat lunch, and then go outside and play Basketball with friends and ride bikes. I'll be 34 years old next month, but I swear I'd do anything to relive those days, to have my Grandparent's back :(

    That better blocks commercial though was awesome! I saw that commercial SO MANY TIMES and it’s the reason I clicked! I always wanted to be that “commander of a star fleet” or the shimmering beauty queen 😂

    Another reminder how creative CN was at the start and how much it has fallen over the years. It's not even so much not showing classic stuff (even though that was great) but that they would do creative stuff like the letters or short shorts to fill time. (The Zan and the Evil Sponge bit will always make me chuckle)

    oh god I suddenly remembered the end of that conway twitty promo, LOL! and I think I remember that second cut of the Super Metroid ad! also I forget where I learned about it but I remember finding out that tootsie pop ad was actually a minute originally but got cut down and that's how we've seen it ever since!

  • @gaialanzer81

    For me, that was my favorite era of Cartoon Network. Don't get me wrong, I love some of the cartoons and the original programming to come out after that, but THAT specific era (early-mid 90s) was awesome. Loved the little secret mail bit where you had cartoon characters respond to kids letter. They don't do stuff like that anymore.
    I'm also pretty sure my little sister had that pink tea play set.
    Oh, and always gotta show props to seeing that old Tootsie Pop commercial, which STILL airs from time to time as of recent. It might the LONGEST running commercial of all time, with that Cadbury Easter Bunny Audition being the second (it still airs around Easter too) and the Fruity Pebbles Santa Commercial being the third (Ho ho ho, I'm hu-hu-hungry!), which I don't think airs anymore, but did up into the 2000s.

    My fifth grade class did the tootsie pops experiment. Since the teachers knew most of us were going to end up nibbling on the tootsie pop a little (whether absent-mindedly or deliberately, lol), we went with the total class average. I don't remember what it was, sadly.

    • @80sCommercialVault
      @80sCommercialVault  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The corn syrup in it is gelled and has virtually all liquid content removed so it is basically a stretchy solid mass and has some other stuff (white limestone, micro particles of glass, gum resin, wood, flour, pine pitch mixture, limestone and talc) added to thicken it and reduce the amount of syrup needed per toy. It's probably technically still edible and non-toxic. I've never heard of anyone eating what was inside, let alone choking on it.

    Ah, the classic version of The Bugs and Daffy Show, from a time when Turner had the rights to earlier Looney Tunes shorts. So on channels like Cartoon Network, TNT, and TBS you'd only see shorts prior to mid-1948, while other channels like Fox, WB, Nick and ABC showed everything after that. So Cartoon Network only had a handful of shorts with characters like Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, and Marvin the Martian, and nothing with Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner or Speedy Gonzales.
    And I think I have that Super Metroid commercial on one of my tapes. I need to do some searching.

    Nintendo made some fantastic games back then, but boy, they did not know how to advertise them. Aside from that annoying Super Metroid one, I remember there was one for Yoshi's Island where a fat guy kept on eating food until he exploded. Obviously, they were trying to emulate the more "edgy" marketing that Sega had been successfully doing at the time, but it just did not work.
