I worked in the Whitney when it was The Visiting Nurse Association of Metropolitan Detroit.
Our meetings were in the solarium.

You know of any photographs that were saved from the visiting nurses era? I've seen one but I'd love to see more.
I love the Detroit house as I am very partial to the Richardsonian Romanesque style. Very glad to see it has survived in a city where much has been lost!
The Whitney Mansion featured is Magt !! Love the Entrance hair with beautiful decorative ceiling and that staircase is just stunning. What an Amazing Mansion this definitely outshines his father’s house on Woodward Ave in Detroit . Happy 4th Long Weekend Ken 🎉💥🎊🇺🇸🇺🇸⭐️💥💥😊😊
The clapboard exterior cladding was an interesting choice.
Lavish opulence with a middle class accent.
My guess is he chose that material due to much of his fortune coming from lumber.
Clapboard is synonymous with certain period architecture.

I enjoyed a lovely brunch at the Whitney; the house was spectacular.
Ken, you show so many houses it hard to pick even a top ten. But for me, I like the houses outside of the city, I like front, back and side yards --- a outdoor inground pool would always be nice.
I used to go to garden parties at The Whitney. Saw the White Stripes play there when they were just getting started.
I love them both, especially the interiors (can`t wait to see the video on the father`s house). And speaking of the father`s house, it`s a perfect example of how these beautiful, architecturally significant houses can be repurposed instead of torn down and the lot used as a parking lot or gas station. If only city planners could be convinced of that and tell the developers "no, the building must be saved".
The Whitney Mansion specifically was a dormitory for Wayne State Students, offices for the Visiting Nurses Association then eventually a restaurant.
If you are ever in Detroit you really have to have dinner at The Whitney! Excellent food and they do tours of the house also.

Ridgemont was a dream; they destroyed it, but I hope a lot was salvaged.

The David Whitney House would have been perfect as a luxury apartment building, but it seems many today prefer modern architecture.
It's the bougie, new money moving into GP that wants to rip things apart...
The entryway!!! Simple, yet stunning. Love the first hanging light fixture!. Cut glass pendants!. Would luv to see that lit up!. And that little kidney shaped writing desk in his bedroom!!. Nice!. But, tbh, the rest is , while nice, is just there. I love the Edwardian period, but this just sits there. With an entryway like that, I was expecting long hallways and grander, taller rooms. Just in my humble opinion though. But i still LOVE that entryway!!. I know, I'll take it and put it in another house!. Lol..... ⚜️
Junior's handsome house would have been just as lovely with 80% less stuff. The sandstone mansion is beautiful, and I'm glad it survived.

I’ve had dinner at the Whitney restaurant! The interiors are amazing.
I hope all the other mansions are restored, I think it's important to preserve Thier beauty,and if they make restaurants,or B&B ,or Weeding or event , at least the Homes in all Thier Glory can be enjoyed by all , Ty Ken as always Simply perfection on this video 💋 (mwah) magnificenza
It's kinda sad but only five Guilded Age mansions remain on Woodward.
The Whitney Mansion, The Hecker Smiley Mansion, The Gerorge Beecher Mansion, The Lemuel Bowen Mansion which was heavily renovated into Wayne State's Mortuary Science Building and the mansion and 5041 Woodward which was renovated into an apartment building.
I would have loved it if the Boeing mansion and the Pingree Mansion had survived.

These houses are magnificent, that said I am sad that so many all over our Country have been demolished. I’m a sucker for an old house!
Please do an episode on the Victoria Mansion in Portland Maine. It's a museum now and very well documented.

After 1950 the mansions in Grosse Pointe started coming down and it accelerated in the 1970s and 80s.
Thank you, Ken, it’s so tragic when such workmanship only last a short historical time. Waste. There are times when it feels as if the whole country is disposable. 😢
Loved the staircase.
The photos were taken by the Company Manning brothers of Detroit , famous photographers of the city the brothers were twins and grew up together with the fords in the 1880s. William Manning is my great grandfather, we at home had trunks of photographs of old Detroit, lucky all are now in the Manning collection .
Grosse Pointe demolished a few mansions like this to build subdivisions of smaller houses on them. One was Rose Terrace.
When I was 19 I went to the Whitney building because and oral surgeon has his office on the 2nd floor. That was 55 yrs ago. 🤣
The father's mansion although smaller was much more stylish and classy. Only goes to show size isn't everything 😊😮.
It would have been a blessing if Detroit would have had the foresight to save the Ridgemont. Today it would be a welcomed attraction for the area.
DC's mansion was not in Detroit. It was in Grosse Pointe.
That would certainly be close enough for the region to have benefited from.
You might take a trip to the David Whitney Jr mansion in Detroit. Not only did it survive but it's on the national historical registry, and it is now a wonderful restaurant that gives historical tours every night. I give tours there. And Detroit is working very hard to restore its original architecture. More so than most cities. You should also check out our newly restored Michigan Central station.

Back in the 1950s and early 60s the Detroit Whitney had an adoption agency on an upper floor which I was adopted out of
That is interesting! I knew that the different rooms were used for different medical offices but I had no idea that there was an adoption agency. Do you know what room the agency was located in ? I'm very curious because I give historical tours in the building.
It was on the third floor and I believe it was to the right of the staircase I'm not sure which room but I believe the adoption agency was Catholic social services I hope this helps a little bit

I got this one, Ken. You would be wrong. I consulted my family tree and the NY Whitneys and the Detroit Whitneys are distant cousins.
Detroit didn’t decline til the mid 1970’s
Must cost too much to well maintain this amazing propriety.
When Coleman Young became mayor! Then everything went south!
Detroit is very much on the rise again. Thanks to the wonderful people in this town as well as our current mayor. I suggest you take a trip and check it out for yourself. I'm quite sure you will be very pleasantly surprised.
