Wind in the Willows Cosgrove Hall 1983 (extended version with omitted chapters)

- In 1983 Cosgrove Hall released their timeless adaptation of the Wind in the Willows. Their classic stop animation film omitted a few chapters from the Kenneth Grahame novel. In particular, Wayfarers All, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and The Further Adventures Of Toad.
These chapters were later included in the full series which aired on ITV.
I'm a huge fan of the original film and decided to try and edit them into the original film. It was a tricky task as I had to edit around any appearances of Toad when he was supposed to be in jail (as per the original timeline of the novel).
I decided not to remove the voice of the Narrator (a feature of the series but not the original movie) as his narration helps somewhat to set the scene for these additional chapters.
I hope you enjoy the extended cut of The Wind in the Willows.

Iv'e always loved The Wind In The Willows so much, but at the same time it has always made me feel sad in a way for some reason. It would always bring about this nostalgic/longing feeling of sorts when I would watch it, especially when I was a little kid. Not sure what that says about me, but i'm curious if anyone else can relate.

As young children my daughters loved this particular incarnation of “Wind In the Willows” and my youngest would call out for “Moley! Moley!” almost every day when she was a pre-schooler. Now my little grand-daughter, not yet 2, is absorbed by it too. Watching it with her, I feel, like you Nick, a great nostalgia, a longing for a place, where people were deeply integrated with their natural surroundings and the passage of the seasons, and a time where people were staunch, reliable friends, genuinely concerned about their neighbours, and lived their lives so much more simply.
Totally relate. It's melancholy of a lost England that's wired into us. There's a lot of English literature that speaks to this. It probably never existed or was only glimpsed briefly as an ideal a bit like in the Wind in the Willows book when they envision Pan and the he makes them forget lest the ecstasy of the vision is too much. Anyway totally with you. Poop! Poop!
I longed to be Mole's friend and neighbor, to live like he did, because the woods of my childhood were where I felt I was Home.

I'm sure this is a children's program and yet, I'm nearly 60 and keep watching this because I have a need to see decency, caring for others that I don't see in today's society.. even if it's only among imaginary woodland creatures in a children's program

No such thing as stories that are ‘just’ for children. I love anything that keeps the child alive in me, and I find that it makes a lot of adult sense . Sadly ,as you say, the reverse is also true .

Totally agree. I never looked at this solely for children, even though visually it is. It's ageless for me.
I'm 44, and am just now reading the book for the first time. It's fascinating because it's considered a children's book but it really isn't. For me it falls into the realm of Tolkien-fantasy but real world themes and struggles. What I appreciate most is how strong a bond of friendship all of the characters have. The world in this book and show makes me feel warm and safe, knowing the characters always look out for each other without modern day lewdness and innuendos but are perfect gentlemen-something the real world sorely lacks.

Absolutely. The original story celebrates camaraderie and the comforts of a simple life. Things that are unfortunately fast becoming forgotten.

Exactly. In old world values wholesome qualities like integrity, honesty, being a good friend, social responsibility were expected, the norm. And they were their own reward.
I still remember this. So much effort went into this movie and series. I wonder why this claymation movie is never talked about? Less than 40 claymation movies in the world and it's a shame this one isn't appreciated more. I mean, I get why this stop motion style isn't used anymore (a bit on the uncanny side) but still a fascinating part of history.

The characters were actually latex over a posable metal skeleton. I was talking to my brother about it the other day and we were saying that using modern photography and combining it with the work of these incredible craftsmen, the result would be spectacular.

This film and the series have a charm and character that could never be reproduced now, in my opinion. When this was made, there were still people from the Edwardian era who could remember England as it is depicted here.
This movie brings back fond memories of my parents and grandparents house in the uk

Yup .. I feel you there. Same for me. Remember watching this at my grandparents place in Shopshire. I live in Vancouver Canada these days, and though I feel very fortunate to have travelled and seen a lot .. I really miss the way old blighty used to be.

I'm 17, American, and have watched this movie with my grandmother every year I've been alive. My favorite movie by far; the extra chapters do the original story justice.
As a child I loved this film. Watching it again, now, I feel the same way but with strong feelings of sadness. I think the sadness is because I see so many miserable people, now, especially children, all of whom would want to be raised on such stories, and to one day look back on them fondly, as we do. But instead, all they have is social media and lies. They walk around in a permanent cloud of anxiety and suspicion and self loathing. Wind in the Willows comes from a time before that, and this is part of why people our age feel sad when watching it, again. Because we cannot gift our childhoods to the next generation.
That was so well-put, and I wholeheartedly agree. It reminds me of a quotation I heard once 'every old man dies in a foreign country', meaning the landscape has changed around him, but today the rapid acceleration of the digital revolution is changing us, and changing our world, in ways I fear that no one can foresee or control.

Time was, our generation would have been at the height of their potency, but now we're blown on the winds of change, like everyone else, and feel just as powerless to fix the problems, mostly because we don't understand them. I hope the circle of history will turn again, and this is just a brief developmental phase on the way to something better.

Man the incredible feelings of nostalgia, The best times of my life as a kid at my nans house that had lots of plants and trees, a passionfruit vine we used to eat fresh passionfruit from, all the birds singing, the creatures scuttling about in the garden, my pa's shed down the back full of old car stuff and the smell of grease, the beautiful smelling roses and honey suckle bush covering the old wooden fence in the sunshine, nans little veggie patch with strips of old stockings holding them upright, the bottle brush plants down the side all on a big green corner block in westmead australia, the smell of tea in gold gilded tea cups and saucers with little painted flowers on them, roast chicken dinners, apple pies baking, the pot pourri in little weaved baskets through the house, the 2 big ornate framed pictures of jesus and mary on the loungeroom wall, little crosses here and there, an old wooden pleated floor lamp between 2 old recliners in front of the telly, an old varnished wooden clock that softly chimed at 12 and wind in the willows in the late afternoon as the sun is setting, best times of my life. i really wish i could go back and stop time right there.

The intro brought back good memories of my granny. She would watch this with us, she lived in the country without a TV most her life and would say things like "Look at that little thing! It's talking!" Me and my brother would laugh and tell her the characters names. She really liked this show. I miss her, I teared up a little.
I used to watch this with my dad, back in the 80s when I was 10. Now that he is not here and I see these episodes, I start to get teary eyed

this type of animation needs to make a comeback! so much artistry and thought behind all the details and movements, and it would probably be more soothing and better for the attention spans of children than crap like cocomelon
What a wonderful gift to the world this is!!! I read The Wind in the Willows to my twin sons when they were young, so this makes feel nostalgic.. and a bit sad because 45 years ago when they were young the world was a different place!

Never found a better example of real language, the rich expression we all had before a generation or two of populist writers dumbed down the English language to cater for the product of a dumbed down education system. WW book and these cosgrove videos were the staple for our kids. My 4 year old now has a better vocabulary and more expressive language than today's average journalist.
This is what real friendship looks like. Don't ever settle for anything less from those you welcome into your inner circle.

I grew up on this in the early 2000s and 2010s, as I lived out in the country and was largely isolated from mainstream society and culture. My brother was, (and still is) an animator and he used to make claymation, after being inspired from films like this. He'd always use my toys along with clay figures he made and recreate these odd yet relatable scenes of childhood imagination, battle scenes, love stories, getting lost in museums, discotheques. His friend was a poet and an intellectual, and while my brother was making claymation, his friend would always read me frog and toad, and innocent books, as well as reading me Shakespeare and Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy, and Cisneros, and Singer, and folklore from around the world. At the time I imagine the world as a peaceful place, where white and black, Jewish and gentile, and everyone else got along in harmony and enjoyed the dreams of childhood. and finally this show would come on as I was very educated in how to operate a DVD player, and as the sun set my brother, his friend, my other brother and my parents would gather around the bulky, soon to be outdated tv and watch this, for endless hours. Life was so blissful, the blossoms hanging low, grass swaying the Kansas wind and a whole mind full of imagination. But life moved on and we moved to the city, and I had largely forgotten about this DVD and other items, as I became a punk and got associated with several counter cultural and subcultural groups, punks, rednecks, hippies, skinheads, stoners, goths and emos. And I won't deny these teenage years, that I am still living, and am active in the current culture, or should I say underground culture. But finding this at 4 in the morning after listening to a BBC broadcast finally made me realize why I am "underground" and why I fit in with "underground" groups. Because I'm like Moley, I enjoy the sweetness of my life and my dear friends, instead of selling it out to a dead society plagued with forgotten memories. Then I started sobbing, because I realized that I am remembering these things not only because I lived them, but because I am a ghost of my past, and so are you, reader, we are all ghosts of our innocence, and our dead childhoods. But remember, not all ghosts are unhappy! :), I wish whoever reads this a wonderful Life!

Who's watching 2023? I'm 23 this year and I've been watching this with my mum and sister before I can even remember. We always quote these older movies and have a laugh knowing we feel like the only ones who have seen this film. It's nice to see we definitely aren't.

This makes me feel warm, sad, nostalgic, longing for the times when people found value in each others' company. My grandma's house was like this. Everybody would drop in and they will leave with aunty Baby's mauby and cake in their stomach and a little parcel of what was going that day. ( She was a baker) We were very poor but somehow we never starved. We didn't have television but a large yard space to play. I live in a little place in UK but alone with my thoughts. When you walk around and you listen and imagine, you can hear all from Wind in the Willow characters. ♥️🌹 People often may wonder why I have a little smile and a faraway look in my eyes. I suppose it's the same feeling you get when you remember the times spent with someone you loved and lost.

When you've had a stressful few weeks at work and you stumble across this... simply amazing.
I first read this book when i was seven. I liked it then and still like it now. Cosgrove Hall give a particularly delightful rendering of this classic tale. I am now 66 and still have a copy, which i occasionally re-read. Timeless.

This is my absolute favorite version of the Wind in the Willows! Such happy, warm childhood memories! The acting and animation is fabulous!
This was a massive part of my childhood in the 80's. I had the VHS , and a pop up book ( i still have the book). This is a great film to watch at xmas time. Now my grandparents and mum are no longer here the memories mean even more.
I'm sure to alot of us in my generation, David Jason is not firstly remebered as Del Boy but Danger Mouse, Count Duckula and of course Mr Toad.
I think I did see him first in Only Fools, but yes pretty much simultaneously in all of his other excellent contributions. I remember a book when we were little, though I'm not sure if it was a pop up one. It had a lot of illustrations, with memorable ones of when Toad was in prison (a debtor's prison I think) and managed to escape dressed as a woman. Both the book illustrations and the film had a captivating mix of humour and darkness, it's a real classic.
My mum loved this. She died 20 years ago...I want her back 😢 she never even got to meet her granddaughter.

I'm 42. First time I've watched this. This is truly a treasure!
As a kid, growing up in the 90s in Sri Lanka, I watched this with my sister. This will always be the epitome of a film for me. As a 36 year old, I think I'll still watch this. Takes me back to my childhood, growing up with my sister and mother and father. This was our glimpse into life in England. Dreamt of coming to this country some day, now I'm here and all I want is to go back to my country. Just a few more years and I'll be gone. Love England anyway.

Ever since I saw this as a child, I've always sided with poor little Mole. His scream when he enters the wild wood is so sad, you can't help but feel his fear and anguish about venturing into the unknown.
Born in 69 and that Thames intro gave me goose bumps as it reminded me of my younger sister who died two months ago. This was our favorite film.
Ah, I love this! I used to watch this with my grandparents as a child growing up. It was very special. My Granny especially loved Mr Mole and I'd insist on having 7 sugars in my tea because he does it at the start of the film. My Granny would only pretend to put 7 sugars in but, if I got the sugar bowl, I'd actually put 7 sugars in my tea. My older brother and I used to love Mr Toad's car montage. My Papa used to like when Toad would throw his arms up in the air when Mr Toad crashed the plane. My Mum loved the Christmas scene and said she'd love a friend like Ratty. Years later we introduced The Wind In The Willows to my younger brother and carried on the family tradition.
How I miss being a child when fun and games were the agenda of the day and watching happy films like this in the 1990's... nostalgia.. 😌👏

40 yrs since this first aired and i remember it like yesterday, growing up during this time was a real blessing. Thanks to animations & books like this i now have the hobbies & interests that i do!! They have really shaped my adult life and if you now where to look, the England portrayed here can still be found and enjoyed. Had this as a child on vhs watched it recently at 46 found a copy in a charity shop still loved it. Always loved the outdoors fishing as a kid walks in the woods animals nature still do thats why i think this animated tale meant so much to me as a child. Ill properly keep it and watch it again when im an old man lol times flies great for nostalgia 🙂

Thank you so much for resurrecting this production of “Wind In The Willows” Simon Crossley. It is an absolute gem and has brought unmeasurable joy to children and adults from one millennium to another. The animation technology has changed massively of course, but this wonderful story never loses its charm, and the detail provided by so many iconic objects, and creatures, the costumes, the songs and music and the voice-overs filled with enormous character, still have unique appeal. Since our VHS tape was accidentally written over decades ago I had despaired of seeing this again. Now the children of my children (and my self) are enjoying it once more. Bless you Simon.

I would always be willing to recommend these programs to those with little ones. A different take on life, from all those twisted up cartoons.

This reminds me of the time when, after final exams, and needing a good, proper rest, a mate suggested we relax by binge watching every episode of Lost in Space - he'd bought a boxed set of the whole lot.
It was a crazy idea, but a strangely worry-free and comforting experience, like being eight again, with the endless summer ahead of you.
There was a note of saddness too; for times gone by and for loved ones who were no longer here with us.
The Wind in the Willows has the same effect on me, heightened by the nostalgic music, which pulls at the heart-strings.
I use to run home do my homework and watch Lost In Space.

I recall watching this as a child and totally mesmerised. Ahead of its time back then.
Every child should watch this series. Such wholesome stories and absolutely beautiful visuals, voice acting and music.
This just unlocked a childhood memory I never knew I had.
The theme song and music in conjunction with the wonderful way the show brings the characters and stories alive makes me cry!

What a powerhouse of British animation they were, sadly defunct since 2009. They really surpassed themselves with this adaptation of Wind in the Willows though

I will never forget the excitement and happy laughter on the face of my then 2 year old.. Such a wonderful movie for children.
