    Great point, great vid. I have a flame map and I have fun with it anytime I can, so for me it's worth it, even if it means changing out the muffler every couple of years. I think the thing that goes the quickest is the exhaust gaskets. I've finally switched over to metal gaskets because the other cheaper ones kept getting burnt up because of the flames hahaha.

      Was a poor job explanation wasn't even given properly coming from tunera it's not massive fuel dumped into extra fuel dumped in there all over the material like that that's not even how it goes all it is is a retard in timing different spark ignition at the different time and most of what was said was bulshit most damage that occurs is you have to replace O2 sensors possibly once in awhile more than you would normally that sometimes and possibly spark plug change more often that's it

    It's true .. the packing material is fiberglass and do you know what happens to fiberglass when it becomes so hot ? It becomes glass again from the high heat. On dirt bike mufflers we pack our mufflers from a couple races/practice. It makes a big difference in horsepower, torque (Dyno tested) and sound (DB meter). So next time you decide to flame map on your $1200 Tomei exhaust be sure it's serviceable to regain some power or just go straight pipe from your headers and keep your tune reliable

  • @SaabStory636
    @SaabStory636 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Most people who do that delete the cats and have straight pipes so it wouldn’t be damaging anything in the exhaust but I understand what you’re getting at

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s not necessarily true. A ton of people have resonated test pipes like myself. And a vast majority of people have at least a set of small resonators down the line. And all the z guys running Tomei single exits all have a resonator at the end.

  • @selfmadejay01

    What's the oxygen content inside an exhaust? With the exhaust going through it and cars running a little rich, there can't be much oxygen left inside the system to ignite. I would like to see a study on this with different exhaust systems. My main concern is the cats

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  ปีที่แล้ว

      We know that cats are destroyed with burble tunes and with flame tuned - although a flame tune with cats is pointless

  • @bryantlee5190
    @bryantlee5190 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This only applies to cars that have cats and mufflers. Usually the ones running these maps have full downpipes and are straight piped.

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I stated in the video that this of course does not apply to people that are straight piped. But there are a ton of people “shooting flames” with at least resonated test pipes and I’ve seen SO many people with fart cans shooting flames-that’s just a big resonator. This is the reason I made the video.

    I don't have a flame tune on my car. I don't have pops and bangs either. However I do have a stage 3 tune from Cobb. I have a catless downpipe and full MBRP exhaust system. When I'm driving normal I hardly go into boost if ever, when I get on it though and the exhaust heats up pretty well. When I downshift sometimes I will shoot flames out of the back. Not all the time, just sometimes

    So, really cool video idea for you. I know of at least one universal Turbo kit (ATP turbo Garrett GTX). You could do a video on what the maximum power/0-60 and 1/4 mile times (hypothetically) would be possible for the 3.7 if money weren't an issue. I figure a Level 10 transmission and a twin turbo setup with a 3.7L would give it an edge over the 3.0T (Obviously the 3.0T is a super win if we're talking the crazy gains for minimal price; bolt ons and tune). Just a suggestion if you run out of ideas, haha.

  • @755hp
    @755hp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Guys, I'm not sure this is 100% accurate... The exhaust piping is hottest near the exhaust port from the engine head (where no packing materials exist). The un-burnt fuel then hits the headers or exhaust manifold and then ignites sending flames past the resonators and mufflers (containing packing material) due to exhaust gas pressures pushing the flame out.
    So un-burnt fuel shouldn't be reaching the resonators or mufflers (assuming they're located further down the exhaust system).
    Also, ignition timing is retarded greatly during decel (-15 to -30 deg) of which by the time the exhaust valve opens, the combustion event is still occurring thus hearing the crackle/pops effects (no un-burnt fuel in exhaust system).

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are good points except there is packing material in resonated test pipes, which I did the demonstration on. That is very close proximity to the exhaust ports.
      And whether unburnt fuel makes it back to the other mufflers/resonators or not (motordyne midmuffler is quite close as well) the flame still has potential to ignite and/or reach packing material through the perforated cores causing the material to breakdown prematurely. This really isn’t a hypothesis. It’s true. We know packing material breaks down naturally, which is why exhaust systems sound different from when they are first installed compared to 6 months later. Sending flames through them simply accelerates that process-and intensifies the process.
      You are correct about timing being pulled on decel to make the pops and bangs, but the flame tune (for the Q50 anyway) is literally for a fuel dump on decel, which is meant to pass fuel into the exhaust system where it is ignited by the heat in the system.

  • @ThatWasherNerd
    @ThatWasherNerd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    If I only did it every once in a while, (like twice a month MAYBE to show off or something), would that be worth the risk to you?

    The testing is definitely exaggerated, and to say it makes it sound like garbage is obviously a biased opinion. Test pipes are quite literally the cheapest mod you can get for your exhaust system, if you’re spending that kind of money to mod your car in the first place that should be the least of your concerns. My tuner had warned me the resonated test pipes aren’t great for the flames, but your video is by no means a lie. “Most people” is a huge stretch. Very few people have a straight exhaust on a Q50 because it sounds terrible. And even z cars with single exits have a resonator at the back. I would say most people have at least one resonator in their system.

    Any thoughts on an E85 kit or M370 intake manifold (I'm not educated or experienced enough to do the DIY intake)?
    Looks like intake manifold will make roughly 12hp/torque in the midrange...which is nice, but it's a $650 part. Still curious of your opinion.
    E85 kit looks intriguing, though. AME 320 LPH or Walbro 255LPH will only cost about $100 and there are 6 Bosch 660CC fuel injectors on Concept Z for $279.
    I read a few different blogs where it seemed it was accurate to expect about a 5% increase in torque/hp on E85. So, for roughly $400, assuming I could do the install, 5% gains would be pretty cool. Thoughts? As always, appreciate your content and advice!
    Just to keep you updated, bought all the parts for a 2.25" exhaust setup today and still waiting on LSD.

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did the video on the z1 400 hp package which includes the ported upper intake manifold-it provides some gains on its own, but if you have filters/intakes, test pipes and catback you will not make any more power adding the intake manifold. I couldn’t justify the expense or the labor efforts. I have a friend who I advised the same thing, but he just had to do it and installed the z1 upper and lower intakes, got custom cold air intakes, test pipes and a catback then did the ecutek tune. He made the same amount of power as me and 3-5lbs LESS torque than me!!
      E85 I think is a reasonable option for some decent gains. Usually it only helps forced induction cars but because of the compression of the vq37, having a cooler burning fuel has proven to yield some additional power. Maybe not quite 5%, but 8-12 +/- wouldn’t be bad.

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It pops and bangs but doesn’t shoot flames. Flames is the issue. But yes, there are some that argue that the lean pop is not good for the car and that BMW for example tunes that into the factory parameters simply for sales purposes. They know it’s what people want. Now I am hesitant to believe that myself, but you never know with the auto industry. But lean pops have a different effect on the engine. It’s the fuel dump into the exhaust system causing flames in the resonators that will cause premature wear and breakdown of materials as demonstrated.
