I was lucky enough to see Star Wars and Close Encounters in the theater 1977. I remember seeing Close Encounters on Christmas day because it was sci fi and the guy who directed Jaws made it (Jaws has been my all time favorite movie since 1975). I did not walk out of the theater the same after watching each of those movies. To this day, Close Encounters and Star Wars remain in my top ten favorite movies of all time.
An underrated, ahead of it's time masterpiece for sure! Spielberg had his own unique and special vision for every film he made, but especially this one!

I saw both versions of this film in the theater.I feel the special edition released in 1980 had a few scenes that i felt added slightly to the film.The last scene where they show the interior of the ship wasn't really all that needed.Then again,there would be a time where i would always wonder,"wouldn't it be cool if they showed the interior of the ship?".I love both versions of this film! I don't recall which version i saw(i'm thinking it was the 1980 version)because of a scene where Richard Dreyfuss was speeding down a road( in his company truck) and a large shadow of one of these crafts crosses the path of his truck over head.This scene from what i have heard was added later.I have to say that this film to this day made me wonder what really is out there in the night sky?
I felt that that the special edition was a little incoherent, scenes at the start seemed to flit from one to the other, plus it was a shame that the scenes of Neary going crazy building the devils tower out of his neighbours gardens had been ommitted. I like the ultimate version (or collectors edition?!) which has removed the internal spaceship scene but has a perfect blend of both previous versions!
Absolutely! Brin is right, and called the shots, concerning the need for narration of the first release cut of Bladerunner. I wouldn't have known what was happening, if the first Bladerunner I watched was the Director's Cut. Very cool.
It wasn't Steven's idea to show the inside of the Mothership for the 1980 Special Edition, it was Columbia's. The studio needed a hook to hang a marketing campaign on. Apparently, the additional Gobi desert and character scenes were not enough.
The best acting is always based in reality.... especially the innocence of children.... using a clown & a gorilla popping out of a box, or unwrapping a present off screen too get a reaction.... always great to know behind the scenes, especially the comment section.

There were a couple of ideas with the Jillian character that weren't made very clear in the film. The first being when the Jillian character is introduced. Her character is supposed to be getting over a cold when one of Barry's toys wakes her up. I think you get a cough and a sniffle and that's it. The second idea is after she testifies to the Airforce about her son being kidnapped by aliens she goes on the road in search of him. All we see is Jillian in a motel room with her drawings when she sees the news about Devil's Tower. You can see the name of the Motel in the window and it's raining but that's it.
In the most recent version of the film, we immediately see that the government is deceiving the people by saying that the air in the region is polluted. In the first version, we were in doubt about this along with the characters. It was Spielberg's mistake to break that doubt in the new cut. He eliminated the suspense.

Well that got a little pretentious. Predatory aliens are just as likely to show up here as friendly aliens. They would be justified in being suspicious and fearful of us as we would be of them. Survival instincts aren't something you just throw away because you were born in a coddled first world country. Even in this movie the aliens were doing things that go against what we consider humane treatment of people. Special effects were critical to the plot of the movie and maybe the best overall of any movie. Everything looks scale and tangible without any obvious signs of post production. I don't think Hollywood stopped making original movies after the 80s, it's just harder to present something that new and fresh now. It's also interesting how much Spielberg taps into spirituality and the idea that beings with more advanced technology and mental capabilities are superior. The scene in India where the crowd is singing the alien tune like a hymn. I can see having a feeling of awe and admiration of aliens and their tech but I wouldn't worship them.
I get the impression Richard knows a bit about the ET presence here....Spielberg supposedly knows a lot more than he lets on... in other words....he is "read in" on the subject....at least some degree....CEOTTK is soft disclosure imo

You hit on something I thought as a teen when first watching the film in the cinema... why is it we could have such awe and respect for superior aliens that could easily destroy us but have it together unlike human beings, but so few have the same feeling toward the true Creator? We'd rather believe we were created by aliens than God! Why? Maybe there's something wrong with our nature that wants to be god over our own lives

John Williams symphonic score was a major character in this film. I think it is his magnum opus of film soundtracks.
He even threw the Disney " when U wish upon a Star ✨" in for good measure, at the climactic moment in the film 📽️
Dreyfuss has always been one of my very favourite actors and people I've always appreciated his great honesty both on the big screen and TV also.

Close Encounters is my favorite movie and Good-bye Girl is my second favorite.
Sometimes I think the reason dialogue was so well-written in the 1930s and '40s was to capitalize on the then-new invention, sound.
