If Skinner makes 9 and Hayes makes over 7 then Duchene isn’t really overpaid, players are just making more money now. He could definitely hit 70 points again if he doesn’t get injured and gets a good amount of ice time with Forsberg or Arvidsson.

Ahhh...Matt Duchene...the first round pick who started as a franchise center where people said he could have been pick higher, became a selfish player for wanting to play second center in a rebuilding team with MacKinnon, to asshole with the Sens for not wanting to stay in a shit show of an organization who was also his hometown, to mercenary for a round win for Columbus who just wanted a big contract...to overpaid player with Nashville...who might not even need him...Crazy how perceptions can change in a career...Is he really selfish...maybe, too many story to be a complete lie, maybe not as bad as advertise...Overpaid ? Big time for what is pretty much a great second center in a championship team who can change games...when he wants too...which is the point with him...consistency...In the international level, he's great because you don't need him 82 game...in a season, he play when he wants...that remind me so much of Gaborik or Jokinen...Great players, but not elites because of consistency... Perso i would have try to restart Kyle Turris instead...also i really didn't want him in Montreal, a bad fit all around for a young team needing leaders and developpement with enough center to work with...hated the rumors about him...time to show what he can do !

  • @kirkjordan8718

Avs never built around Duchene and always traded away significant pieces to the core during his tenure. Anderson for Elliott after Andy's huge year, then Elliott signs in STL and has MVP seasons. Chris Stewart and Kevin Shattenkirk for Erik Johnson the literal next day seems like a win now but at the time Chris Stewart was raging it with Paul Stastny, and Shattenkirk was pretty good for a long time. Didn't have a goalie so we traded picks for Varlamov.
I think overall when the Avs drafted MacKinnon instead of Seth Jones at the time it pissed off all our forwards. Duchene had already taken a discount to play and be at camp, but watched ROR pull the offer-sheet stuff and ultimately make more 3M in more money. *edit: if we just take the picks from Calgary that's Sean Monahan.
Avs signed Iginla at 5.3M instead of bringing back Stastny at 7M, plus lost ROR via trade the off-season after Roy/MacKinnon's year one. Like even now if we would have just dished out 1.7M extra towards Stastny instead of Iginla it's possible we'd still have him too, and it's not like anyone would have said that was a bad move then either...but instead we lost Stastny and ROR and everyone expected us to be better.
The thing I'm most interested to see is how he rages in Nashville while actually having teammates. Like Forsberg, who was the Avs pick traded to Washington for Varlamov during Duchene's tenure. And then never put a defense in front of Varly so he was always injured when it counted too.
It's not that the Avs have had trouble drafting talent. They just had trouble keeping it while Greg Sherman was saving money and trying to acquire more picks.

The Aves mgnt made a big mistake with Duchene. They got caught up in his contract years on the bridge deal and made him the cornerstone. They put his contract at the top and felt they could everyone else less for a few years. Remember O'Reilly came from the same draft. He got the big bridge deal when they matched the offer sheet for his bridge deal. When the bridge deals were up they overvalued Duchene and undervalued O'Reilly. O'Reilly was and is the factor, Duchene not so much. This led to trading O'Reilly, the better leader. By then Landy became the captain but that couldn't make up for loosing the factor. Duchene just isn't mentally strong enough, even with his skills. He may well succeed with Nashville because the town suits him and the team has leadership. Happiness goes a long way to helping a player build confidence and Duchene has to have that. It's not all within him.

I predict a 27-38-65 season from him. I think he’ll do well in Nashville for two reasons:
    1. He loves the city. He’ll finally be in an enjoyable environment. He has a chance to win (for real this time)
    2. He doesn’t have to be the game-breaker. Nashville is all about depth.
At his best I think he’s a 30-40-70 point guy.
    At his worst I think he’s a 25-25-50 guy.
So somewhere in between is realistic, maybe a bit on the higher side.
Two drawbacks though are it was a contract year and I don’t think he’ll get as many opportunities as in Ottawa.

I disagree with the comment about Ottawa being the best situation for him when it comes to scoring. Some major points: He wants to win a Cup now (that won't happen in Ottawa for some time), and Dzingel and Stone were moved. I bet he'd be a 60 point player at best if he dressed in all 82 games, which he could easily do in Nashville with a much better chance of winning the Cup. He made the right move, and got compensated well in the process.

I think you're a little tough on centers. How many really good centers who aren't overpaid are there in the league? It's a lot like QBs in the NFL. You pay a premium for a guy that you hope can get the job done because the position is so important. To your point about Duchene performing well when he's around top-notch talent, I think that's part of the Preds plan. You could really make that same argument about Mikael Granlund (and really Kyle Turris too, but it's not likely that he's on a line with Duchene). But once you start putting these guys together, you hopefully get more out of them. With Granlund always being a pass first guy, I'm hopeful that giving him a weapon like Duchene will be a huge boost to both of them. Like you said, it's not like Duchene is going to be asked to do it all himself. He's a complementary piece in Nashville, and the hope is that will bring out the best in his game.

You can't throw out the bad years. He was a central figure for those Avs teams. His numbers indicate him scoring closer to 60 points than above 70.

    • @danpro4519
      @danpro4519 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@TheHockeyGuy Sure. But he was central to a team that was a mess during the Roy Era, he had some injuries, and he requested a trade which would indicate his mental game wasn't fully there. I mean, I certainly wouldn't be shocked if he only got between 50-60, I just wouldn't bet on it (barring injuries). Or maybe I'm just a overly hopeful Preds fan :p... Lol

The thing I have with Duchene is that Uber ride last year when he was laughing at how bad Ottawa was

I think depending on who Duchene plays with, he gets about 55, worst case scenario, and 75 at best. I expect between 60 and 65 with 25-30 goals.
Part of the points being down may well have been the scoring across the league being down in 2016

First instinct, for whatever reason, is 64 points for Duchene this season in Nashville if he plays 75 or more games.

@@michaelb4833 I'll put you down for about 59-61 for Duchene then. ;P
I have to think 60 minimum if he has chemistry on a line with Arvy.

To address squeezing out veterans under today’s cap.. the NHL should look into a “veterans exception” to the cap.. doesn’t the NBA have something like that? It’s pity teams can’t afford 3/4th line veterans anymore... could they make an exception to the cap between 1.5-3.5 million for players over 32 that wouldn’t count against the cap?

sweetie lune yea.. having veteran leadership in the locker room is a terrible thing... it is odd that almost every champion in every sport talk about veteran leadership in the room teaching the kids how to play the game properly.. what a idiot you are

Can't blame Matt for wanting to win. It would be funny if he gets knocked out by Colorado in the playoffs this year. Ottawa way overpaid for just over a year of his services.

When you're a top 3 pick there are expectations, Landeskog and MacKinnon are meeting those expectations, Duchene just whines.
