The parts bath triggered a memory for me. The smell... not a bad smell, but a unique smell. I went through a couple of engines with Dad and I spent many hours/days cleaning parts. Every time I see your videos with this, it takes me back. 👍👍

With tools like vises, anvils and such, I recommend keeping a running wish list and reading up on quality older models, adding notes to your list as you learn more. The quality of older American made pieces is usually superior to new (usually imports) and they are often much less expensive.
When you go to a swap meet or flea market, you can check your list and be ready for a great deal when you find one. The Northeastern and Midwestern US have strong manufacturing and machining history. As the old pros retire (and, sadly, pass away) those tools come up to serve another generation.
While it makes sense to not buy everything you think you'll need up front, waiting until you need something can limit your choices and lead to a purchase under some level of duress. I recommend acquiring and setting aside the money and knowledge so that you can seize upon the opportunity to buy the best.

"Throw nothing away" is good advice. I got a box full of random original parts from my sportster 1200s that are going to come I'm really handy when something breaks, or make someone's day when they need them the most. Plus if I ever sell it, those parts can really sweeten the deal.
Looking forward to the ongoing saga with this rebuild. Glad your taking your time and explaining on throwing away nothing. You never know what can be saved in the long run 👊👍💪

Thank you guys so much. You were my inspiration to buying a project. I just picked up a 1985 Honda v65 Sabre on Sunday, I scooped it up for $1500 and only had to put a battery, intake boots and a turn signal on it. I can connect to no being able to ride with someone who inspired you to ride. My Grandpa passed away in September due to Covid and I remember riding with him on his retired police Harley as a kid. Again I just wanted to thank you for helping to inspire me to get in 2 wheels again and use the ride as an outlet.

I feel ya. I didn't start riding till I was 7 on a Honda 50 that I bought from a customer on my Egg route. I saw the bike under a tarp and I asked them what they planned on doing with these bike since it never left the tarp. They were like, it's for sale and I was like I got 35 dollars and they took it. Their kid who was like 2 years older than me broke his leg on it and they wanted the Honda 50 gone. I'm 57 now and in May I'll be 58 so that will make 51 years riding motorcycles. I have ridden bikes from the 60's on up to bikes from the 2000's ....

That’s something I miss from SRK is their honest reviews on the bikes they sell. It was a very unique part of the channel and was the foundation to why i started riding.

Sean please don't let your hands soak in the parts cleaner. That stuff can mess with your nerves later in life. Remember how all the mechanics back in the day used to use thinner as hand cleaner?

It's been about 4yrs since I've been on the road. I'm in the midst of finding a decent motorcycle to get back on the road on. You guys have been a huge inspiration and hope I can find people like you in my life. To get things back in the right swing. Much love and respect you guys keep doing what you do!
I've never understood how anyone who rides a motorcycle can have "hate" for other motorcycles. I'd rather ride ANY motorcycle than ride NO motorcycle. Riding is riding -- you either love it or you don't.

You’ve gotten me to “get back into my faith” so to speak. I love it. My daughter and I were watching this and laughing about how long it took you to rebuild the pogo stick and she said that I take just as long doing nothing! Keep up the work. I don’t know why I enjoy doing tedious stuff like that but I do.
It's good to see things slowly improving , a gimbal for Dan would be nice when the budget allows . A more affordable handheld camera mount would also give you smoother shots .

For me, I grew up around bikes. My dad was in an MC that split up right before I was born, so I had a lot of uncles. I ride his 68FLH that he bought in 79. My first bike was a 64XLCH and after a bad motor vehicle accident kickstarting that bike was a problem, so he passed down the bike early since he has another bike. I bought my XLCH when I was 19 but got married young and the bike sat for a while before I dove into the rebuild when I was 23. Then the accident and I spent a couple years riding a wheelchair and a hospital bed, but as I got better my desire to ride only grew and I didn't really ride "full time" till I was about 30. I'm a Harley guy, but I'm not against other people riding what they like. 2 wheels is 2 wheels and as long as your knees are in the breeze, life behind bars ain't so bad. I think my dad knew a Bill Miller that used to race. We're from NY so not that far away.
Two takeaways. 1) Non-bike restorers, notice the elbow grease. Huge part of any restoration. Get good at it. Patience. 2) "Never throw anything away." I bought a bike in boxes that came with 5 sets of carbs in varying condition. I told my carb rebuild guy, make me two good sets. You can keep extra parts. A few years later, doing another project, the carbs needed some parts. Yup. I should have kept them. Lucky I reminded my carb guy and he did have them in his stash.
When I was working in a machine shop I made many V jaws for vices for friends. They said it was one of the best things, tools, they had. I enjoy this video series.
Glad to see you guys being patient with the build. Patients and persistent will pay off in the end resulting in a much better product than one just thrown together. I learned a long time ago,do it once and do it right. Much better and easier than it’s always nice because I did it twice. Glad to see you saving parts also, I try to build all my bikes with original or oem replacement parts except for the choppers and the drag bike. Keep up the great work and congrats on the new vice,keep your eyes peeled at the swap meets and yard sales for an older Wilton or something similar made up of heavier castings though as the vises from today’s era aren’t nearly as stout. Learned that one the hard way too.

Nice to see someone learn the lesson about not just throwing things away. If you treat everything like it is worth nothing, nothing will ever be worth anything . Everything has a value. Not necessarily monetary.

I've always loved motorcycles, from the time a friend let me ride his ChrisCycle when I was 15, and I was hooked. When I was offered a choice between a car and a motorcycle, I chose a motorcycle. That's how much I like bikes.
For the parts cleaner/varsol container you can actually buy a brush attachment for it that’ll pump the varsol on it while you brush, not sure if you already had that but thought I’d point that out. It’s very handy 🙂

I really thought you guys would be done by now. I see you are making progress. And yes you need shop equipment. 2 grinders, set of torches, drill press, buffer, good welder, plasma cutter, nice air compressor. I can't wait to see it. The guys like to take a 10 day road vaca every year. They want to do Penn and NY this year. Who knows we might stop by. Tom from Michigan.

As always great content Sean and Craig. It is great watching you guys learn as you go. Craig seems to have a good skill set and is learning these old Harleys well, and Sean coming from little or no repair skills is picking this up well. I can't wait to see this done, and then start the Indian project. By that time you guys will have well honed your skills together.
Check the seat post in the frame. They wear out and become sloppy. It's a replaceable brass bushing. I build WL bikes and love them. Nice going.
This would be a fun build. I would have done a modern retro type restore, like MX bars and risers, stroked engine or S&S upgrade for the extra ponies, jockey shift, some purists would hate me for it but it would be one of a kind. You are doing it the right way, preserving an OEMish relic. I, on the other hand, would create an old-new school mut 🐶
I think the blue is handsome but for the simple reason that most favor it and it’s done quite a bit, I’d go with the black and red. It’s funny how black wasn’t as popular back then.

Check into covers for your vice you can get aluminum, plastic, so you don't scratch or gouge pieces while working on them. I think they make a better torch used with bigger propane tanks get stuff hotter and faster, good luck I had 2 friends who had old ones like yours History and time of past...
Your seat post excursion reminds me of my own back in the seventies. Never throw anything away until it's all over and back together. I bought a 74 shovel back in 77, from the Honolulu P.D. John McClain, GySgt, USMC ret.

I learned about tools decades ago. I would borrow a tool, break it and wind up buying someone else a new tool. 45 years later I've got lots of tools, still adding tools.

just a tip. find a piece of steel plate to mount underneath your vise and you will have a much better vise and you can pound things on the plate and weld on it.

You need an 8" bench grinder then a couple of wire wheels. Twisted for bad rust and grot and then fine. The fine if pressed hard takes a lot off but used very gently can polish metal or old chrome.
Though waqtching you do all sorts of process, you have a bead blast cabinet use that. Then the fine wire brush to polish it!
I have a 80s mongoose mountain bike with a 78.5 cc's of fun ass times. Shits so fun to go bar hopping on, flying past traffic scaring my buddies.

A great 'tool rule' I learned was to buy the best I can afford, none fit for purpose tools can be worse than not having them, in what they can damage, one can always borrow on pain of death re giving them back again. :-)

I have been riding since I was 12 starting with a Kawasaki dirt bike the first bike I bought was a 78 sportster new when I was in the Navy. Then over the years a Pan chopper, another sportster traded for a 1969 Sportster chopper, a new 1983 dresser, a 1985 new softail, then a new 1995 Springer softail. I am hoping to get another bike when I get better. I am now wishing I had kept all my bikes I had over the years. As for the bike you looked at in the Harley dealer you can see what I meant about the blue color. Keep on keeping on, God bless you and I hope you get back into selling bikes.
I started out with a 70s model Yamaha 60 in the early 90s. Then I got a Honda NX125 that was converted to a dirt bike mid 90s, then I had that one until early 2000, then I got a Suzuki RM250, then 2 years later got a Yamaha YZ450F, then this year July 2022 I got a Kawasaki Ninja 650. Been on bikes for all of my early 10s and now I’m 40 and got my Ninja. I love bikes. Fun to ride and even funner when I get to go riding with my Father. He was always the mechanic which I picked up on some. I do all my own maintenance and it’s nothing for me to ride when there is snow out which isn’t very often in OKLAHOMA as some states. As long as the roads are cleared I’m on my bike. However as a dad of 5 I don’t do too much crazy stuff anymore and of course when family goes places I’m not driving my bike. But there is nothing like the open road. Plus I drive 100miles a day to work which yep on the bike. 5 days a week daytime sometimes and night time sometimes. You learn a lot driving for years but you can’t predict everything but that’s the adrenaline rush for me. Also dude I subscribed to you just last week when I seen the Bible versus. Not many people I watch on TH-cam do that. Power to you man.
When you need to sand a section of pipe get a roll of 1" abrasive cloth and cut a 1-to 1 1/2 foot section then wrap it around the pipe once and hold one end in each hand then feed it back and forth and it does a really good job .
Those designers were ahead of their time, it’s like a work of art.

That bare netal vice hurts. Then again, i work on aircraft parts that are EXTREMELY easy to break. Gotta get you some plastic jaw covers. I love this project. So great to see these pieces of history come back to life.
