20th-century composers were so prolific, unless one was wealthy and had unlimited time and resources, one simply could not keep up with them all.

Although I have heard parts of this work before, and generally enjoyed it - the grand postlude to 'Chaplin' came as a pleasant surprise. For me, this composer had a wonderful musical imagination. He ought to be better known.

Really ahead of his time - not just compositionally but conceptually...writing a symphony for movie stars in 1933? Who would have thought of that? You'd be accused of post-post-Modern posturing if you tried this today...but then? Wow.

I discovered this piece through the old recording by the Monte Carlo group and was amazed at how woderful it was. Also, I was surprised that it had become a rather forgotten piece. I went on to listen to other fine pieces by Koechlin. I don't think he is played much in the US, but he should be.

The Germanic domination of academic circles has entirely hidden countless incredible French composers from the public and although they aren't as played in the US as they should be, i think the US is slowly but surely putting them back on the map probably thanks to the historical ties between American and French music, both traditions have a lot in common in terms of taste and esthetics.

Wow. This is marvelous. I stumbled on this by total chance. I thought that I had never heard his name then I read his wiki page and recognized one of his works from having performed it in High School : Épitaphe de Jean Harlow for flute, alto saxophone and piano op.164 (1937)

It took so long for the USA to discover Faure, Debussy, Ravel, then Satie and Les Six, that most other French composers were overlooked or simply not available on records. Somehow, recording cds made it possible to round out the catalog. This generation was overshadowed by Messaien, finally Dutilleux, because they fit academic expectations. No attention was paid to the continuation of Faure's school, or the Impressionists. Shame on Music Education as a field.

I was joking but you're right. All the "recent" recordings (after 1980) of his symphonic music come from Germany, with the exception of Alexandre Myrat beautiful rendition of the 7 stars symph. and of the Ballade for piano and orch. (EMI).

He was rather well known, but like most French composers, suffered from the domination of Germanically trained musicians, and got little exposure in the United States. Debussy wasn't even accepted as a master until the 1970s.
