We knew exactly what the fuck we were listening to, and though most of us loved it more than words can express… we were too fucking beat up at that point to lose our shit to it. I mean, there was something like 30 different bands that had played all day on two different stages that were almost a mile apart from each other, there was no set order that the bands were playing in, so you had to guess which stage they were gonna be on and then run like hell through the brutal hot sun (it was something like 105 that day) so you could catch the next band if they were on the other stage. Then there was the fact that the entire first 20 or so rows in front of the big stage (where the Pistols played) were fenced off and reserved for “industry” people and their zillionaire buddies… who probably wouldn’t know the words to a single Sex Pistols song if it screamed “gurgling bloody mess” in their ears. You couldn’t sneak in to the “VIP” section because there was a 15 foot deep concrete trench surrounding it that had been fenced off. All the real fans had no choice but to stay back on the lawn. There was no re-entry, so most of us had been cooking in the desert heat all afternoon long and people were setting multiple piles of garbage on fire all over the place, so we got to breathe that in.
So yeah, that’s why we weren’t exactly the most energetic crowd in the world by the time the Pistols went on.

I was there. It was one of the most awaited epic moments of my life to see them live. And this man is right it was a long, hot day just waiting for the sex pistols. I love some of the other bands, but let’s be honest, no one gives a shit we were all there for the sex pistols. John was amazing and so is the rest of the band. I watch this all the time reliving that day.

totally agree usually - he has such a great live sound - but he's using a burny here (he shunned gibson for while as they didn't do much for him at that point ) - it sounds weak comparatively to his Gibsons I think . .. too fuzzy and not cutting enough like usual .

Thank you for this whoever 💗 you are. This band never gets old.

The Sex Pistol without Sid Vicous of course, because there were times in early punk when they would sign musicians to recording contracts who couldn't play an instrument. The Slits became musicians. For Sid, he couldn't play the bass. It was turned up loud but he liked the ability to play. Glen Maddox and Steve Jones played the bass on the Never Mind the Bullocks album. Sad for Sid. With Johnny Lydon dising the other members there may never be another album or tour.

Too many bands. I was there too. It was the last time I ever went to one of these ridiculous giant festivals in the blazing hot desert hell. Loved some of the bands, but would *MUCH* rather see them on their own at a more intimate (and not in the blazing outdoor summer heat) venue. This one (Inland Invasion ‘02) was especially awful. I could sit here and type all day the reasons why, but let’s just say that for a “punk festival”, this was everything that punk was *NEVER* meant to be.
That said, the Pistols were fucking great… once they finally went on.

@@mildred714 In all honesty, ever since my experience with that festival, I’d rather take a hard pass on pretty much *ANY* band I love, even if it’s my one and only chance to ever see them. It was *THAT* miserable. Like I said, the Pistols were fucking great, and they were really the only reason I forked out the money, made the 2,000 mile drive from Texas, and played hooky from work for 3 days to endure brutal, inescapable temperatures, dehydration, having the sun blast me in the face while it’s going down just above the stage I’m trying to look at (but can’t get anywhere near because they dug out and fenced in a concrete trench around the “VIP section” - aka “millionaire zone”), and breathing toxic fumes all afternoon from all the various piles of burning garbage. I was coughing up tarry sludge for a week after that (which at least made my sick story plausible at my job).
It just isn’t worth it in my book. Give me a small to mid size indoor venue with no more than 4 bands on the bill and a re-entry option, or give me a night at home.

Not me. They’d probably just be a pale imitation of what they once were if they were still going today. Their hearts aren’t in it anymore. Back then they were making a case, that they were nobody’s puppets. Essentially a big “F.U.” to Malcolm and to everyone who bought Malcolm’s myths. They made their case and they moved on. John refocused his efforts on PiL, Jonesy is essentially retired from music, Paul is just Paul, and Glen is back to playing with a million different bands (and doing the odd bit of acting). The Pistols went out on a high note this time, unlike the first time. I would imagine they’d want to keep it that way.

The heat was one thing, but then add to that there’s literally *NO* shade at all, no water available except for the little tiny bottled waters that were selling for something like $5 each (and this was back in 2002), that you had to spend an hour in line to get. I guess the bands hadn’t been made aware that their fans who paid good money to see them were not only getting heat exhaustion, but were being denied water. TSOL were the only band who called out the sponsors from the stage for being greedy dicks. And then there was all the toxic smoke from those garbage fires that people kept setting. The whole thing was like some ridiculous endurance test. Good thing I wasn’t the age I am today. I probably would’ve dropped dead.

PiL is PiL, and the Pistols were the Pistols. Two completely different things. Personally I love them both, and always have… but for different reasons. They scratch two different kinds of itches. PiL never needed to be “harder”. They’re perfect for what they are (most times at least).

@@jeffjones3040 “Arrogance”? Ok? You were doing just fine until that last little quip. 🤣 I guess saying that an established band that’s been around for something like 45 years was a disappointment because they weren’t hard enough to meet with your approval isn’t “arrogant” at all… but yeah, I’m being arrogant. Ok then. 👍
