Last week, we discussed the CDMP Data Governance Specialist Exam and promised to address the Data Modelling & Design Exam in our next series.
The starting point for preparing for any CDMP exam is understanding each category and its weighting.
This exam has the following categories and weighting:
    1. Introduction, Uses & Methods: 66%
    2. Activities: 9%
    3. Tools: 5%
    4. Best Practices: 17%
    5. Data Model Governance: 3%
Two of the five categories count for 83%. Your initial focus should be on these two areas.
Before I explain the different categories, let us restate the test-enhanced learning cycle:
    1. Briefly review a topic (exam category) area.
    2. Complete a short set of topic practice questions
    3. Learn for errors by explaining why answer choices are correct or incorrect.
    4. Review concepts and facts in areas of weakness by accessing videos or textbooks.
    5. Summarise content from memory.
    6. Complete a cumulative set of practice questions.
Understanding each category and what material you can use to review the topic area is essential.
    Introduction, Uses and Methods
This category deals with the fundamentals of data modelling and the components of a data model. It covers topics such as what data modelling is and why it is necessary, the relationships between it and other enterprise architecture models, and the different levels of data modelling. It also discusses entities, relationships, attributes, and keys, recognizing entity supertypes and subtypes and the physical rules of entity typing. Additionally, it covers the details of relationships, including cardinality, optionality, identifying and non-identifying, and arity.
    Best Practices
How do you improve your data modelling capability?
We need to ensure that we get the following right:
    1. The use of Normalization and Denormalization
    a. Getting to a normalized model (3NF)
    b. Higher levels (6th & Anchor Models)
    2. Achieving consistent data modelling results:
    a. Scoring a Data Model
    b. Training Data Modellers
    3. Layout, Presenting and Communicating Data Models
    a. Diagram Layout Guidelines
    b. Abstraction for Presentation
    Activities Category
    Tools Category
    Data Model Governance
You can find a more detailed discussion of the other categories in the webinar.
After reviewing the topics, it's time to start testing yourself to ensure you understand all the required elements correctly.
