    I have not tried them yet! I'm looking forward to it hopefully soon. So often when I do go out I take food that I just supplement with a few wild edibles. Such a great video, thank you for sharing this! With love my friend! 💚

    Nice! I'm loving these in depth plant episodes. Nice to get the info out there on milkweed. Another misconception I've seen repeated in tons of books is that rose hip seeds give you 'itchy bum'. That same phrase is used a lot, and maybe it's spread just because it's a funny idea. Arthur Haines turned me on to it not being true though, and I've been eating rosehip seeds from various native roses year after year and have never had the infamous 'itchy bum'.

      I love it when modern foragers dispel some of those old misconceptions. So glad you're enjoying those hips, seeds and all! =)

    Hi Kenton, Thank you for including the bit on how to check to see if a plant is currently hosting a monarch cat. If I may ask, however, could you maybe do a follow-up on checking for the eggs as well? They are pretty distinctive and easy to spot once you know what to look for.
    If anyone else reads this, please keep in mind that milkweed is the *only* plant on which Monarch butterflies will lay their eggs, and declining availability - not to mention the use of pesticides and herbicides, which either kills the caterpillars or result in deformed adults that can't fly (both of which I've seen in person) - is a very big issue for them. Please only take one cluster and/or a few leaves from each plant, and please always check for monarch eggs or caterpillars.
    If anyone is interested in learning more about planting and growing milkweed or is interested in helping raise and protect the caterpillars, I recommend that you check out Mr. Lund Science's raising monarchs videos here on YT: th-cam.com/play/PLIJYERWSMyVphsed9fypj-n8g3axFBakC.html

      Sarah, that's such a great suggestion. I was trying to find some monarch eggs to do just that in this video. They're pretty reduced here -- we have tons of milkweed, but not much in the way of monarchs. When we find one, we make the area around it sacred ground -- the whole community here is very careful with our monarchs. I'll consider a future video on the eggs . . . if I can find some! Until then, I so appreciate you including these links and all of this info, and I appreciate your caring for these beautiful beings =)
      Love,
      Kenton =)

      @@ReWildUniversity I've been having the same trouble here (Maine), lots and lots of milkweed but, up until 2 days ago, no eggs and no monarch caterpillars. However, the day before yesterday I found four eggs on four separate plants in a milkweed patch beside the trail where I walk everyday. I have since been monitoring that patch of milkweed and trying to discourage (ie relocate) any pests that seem to be taking a liking to it. Hopefully, you, too, will start seeing them any day now!🤞🤞

      @@ReWildUniversity hi friends, everything is going well here, spring time was really short now full summer here with really hot sunny days and nights, I haven't painted anything lately, I just started to re-learn guitar after 25 years of not playing, and it's hard, I bought a acoustic fender folk guitar and I love it, I just can't play anything on it clean yet, a lot of practice is needed,
      Another cool hobby.
      I never tried milkweed, how would you describe the taste of it?

    And I only eat home-grown spice
    I got a John Keats autographed Grecian urn

    • @ReWildUniversity

      We've lost a lot due to habitat destruction -- they like disturbed sites, but as we use more and more herbicides on the roadsides and crop fields, the milkweed disappears. You can help out by, if and when you do find some, spreading those seeds to the wind or even planting them if you have a yard or garden space. Part of the hidden "mission" behind helping people recognize these as a prime vegetable food is that perhaps a few people would consider planting them as part of their gardens -- they offer different edible parts from spring to autumn, and are thus a great vegetable crop that doubles as helping the monarchs =)
