Your message in this video is spot on Chris, the start up cost, material research, packaging, sponsorships... you hit it all on the head. I probably speak for a lot of us novice bait makers when I say your channel content has helped us learn so much and there really isn't another like it. There is a lot who try, but your passion, experience and dedication definitely comes out in your work! Since I started making baits I've said, I really don't care if I turn a profit as long as I can make some of my money back and buy another jug of plastic so I can continue to experiment and create. Catching a huge bucketmouth on something you have created is a feeling I don't think can be matched by much else. Keep doing what your doing brother!

I have had an idea for a unique take on the wacky worm for several years now. Earlier this year I even deconstructed some of my plastics and merged them together by melting the plastic with a lighter and letting the plastic mold into another. The lure itself is a little big and ugly, but once I finished I was so proud of myself for actually accomplishing something and could call it my own. I just have to learn how to make it on a smaller scale and much cleaner. I know I am onto something special and unique that no one on the market has. Thank you for your inspiring words, I am going to make my dream become a reality one of these days.

Chris Im a disabled Veteran with a with alot of time on my hands and spend alot of time assisting other veterans who are also disabled.I stumbled across your channel on youtube and found it not only fascinating but discovered that what you do would help other disabled veterans in in their journey in healing. Im currently putting together a program o get other disabled veterans involved in learning to make their own plastic baits, I believe it would provide the opportunity for the guys to get together, be productve, generate conversation , camaraderie, encourage them to open up and to give them purpose. I thank you for your channel. currently 22 veterans take their life each day and I believe your channel has more than the impact than learning to make more baits but rather result in saving these veterans lives, please keep coming out with these videos .

I have been self employed since 12 yrs old. With exception of two yrs after college. Mybcurrent company is in its 30 th yr.
With business you have to be either really small or really big.
If you decide to go big. Buy all your equipment you need tobstart. Then put in storage. Then go out and work two or three jobs. Amass. 18 months of cash needed to pay your bills to live. When you have that then go for it full time. Give it your all. If you cant make a living at it after 18 months. Quit. Keep it as a hobby..sell at flea markets and fishing shows or out of your trunk at fishing hot spots.
A great resource if you ve never been in business is federal Small Business Administrations retired executives program. Its free. They will set you up with retired business owners who will help you build your business and avoid mistakes.

Chris I have been watching your videos as much as I can for a few months now. Thanks for making a helping video that’s easy to understand. I have made Football head jigs for a few years now. I’m 58 and lost a good paying job to disability because of eye issues. I have already spent over $500 getting started making plastics. I truly enjoyed this video about start a business. The main reason I guess I’m doing this and wanting to venture out is for my grandson. He is about to be 13 years old. He had wanted to be a professional fisherman since he was in kindergarten. He joined a school fishing team in 2020 fishing the Jr division. He and his partner finished 2nd in the anglers of the year in TBF in the state of AL. They went to the Jr World Championship in Quad City Illinois in 2021 and finished 8th overall and got a $1000 Scholarship at age 12. Yes very proud bawbaw lol. This year they have already locked in AOY and are eligible to fish the Jr World Championship again. Blessed is all I can say. Max (grandson) is wanting to make lures so that if and when he gets through college and does get the opportunity to fish professionally he can supplement his income. He has a few years to advance his lure making skills. Your video help is very much appreciated. We would love to meet you sometime. Sorry for such a long post. So much to say and ask. Thanks again. Wayne Plemmons

I haven’t tried and probably never will try to sell baits. I have run a micro business in woodworking, so I know you speak the truth. For me, the fun is in catching a fish on my own bait as you said. I’m also happy to give a few to friends and have them catch fish, but that’s as far as I will likely ever go. Thanks for the lessons through your channel.

I had a fishing lure manufacturing company in the 70's . I eventually employed 38 people. I literally worked 20 hours a day 7 days a week for several years. I eventually sold the company and was able to pay my tuition to college and medical school. I have never thought about trying to start another company. It's an incredible amount of commitment and work to be successful.

Just now watching this video, and I’ve been doing it as a side business for several years. Gone through a lot of trial and error, put it on the back burner several times, started getting back into it recently. I like to keep it simple, charge 5 bucks for any type of lure I do, and adjust quantity for how I see the opportunity cost to fit. You don’t need printed bags or a fancy website to get your name out there, not at first. I’d like to get to the level where I’ve got a smaller injection machine, lots of molds, and can pump out 100-200 baits an hour. It also helps to know people, and one thing I’d love to do is design a bait, that is unique to my brand, and just flat out works in the lakes local to me. I think having your own bait vs molds that anyone can buy will really set you above the rest. Thanks for the great video, you have some great advice. I’d like to follow up with you through email or private message at some point, though I know you’re a super busy guy.

I’m starting a bait business and this was interesting to hear you discuss. I realized early on that I did NOT want to spend time to mold anything, and China offered solutions. I understand why you want to pour the molds yourself, it’s your passion, but that’s unimaginable to me. I’ll box some stuff, put some labels on, ship things, brand things, but making it yourself seems un-scalable.
It’s wild that people are vitriolic about soft plastics, that’s hilarious to me honestly.

This is some rock solid advice. I'm trying to have my own outdoor company with everything from fishing and hunting to camping and hiking. I found you because I'm wanting to add my own brand of lures to the arsenal. You're right, it's hard as hell. I have made any profit in over a year except for some shirts my buddies bought. It's really hard being in a part of the world that isn't into the type of fishing you're into. My main go is to be in a spot by the time I get out of the military that I can have a somewhat consistent customer base.

Chris, I want to thank you for all your videos. Thanks also for being honest and true to the sport and the production side as way. I love watching your videos and the passion that you put into your baits. I have always wanted to try my luck at the plastic bait side of fishing and after watching your videos I’m slowly getting the things I need. I agree 100% on the prostaff as my parents had a small spinnerbait company (long hours pouring, cleaning, painting and assembling) that they sponsored a few people that had no return. The one thing that upset me the most was having one of their pro staffer tell me that he traded the bait with other pro staffer for their sponsors baits. Just to get free bait and not promote their own sponsorship. I know what (parts and prices) and how much time goes into making one bait that people or consumer don’t think about. This video is spot on right, great job sir! The little things that people don’t think about seem to cost the most and packaging is a big one. Please keep the videos coming and the passion for the sport. God bless

You make me want to go out to the garage and work on my hard top water bait every time I watch one of your videos. Unfortunately it is a very tricky design. It’s been in my head for about two years now. I even contacted a major company to see if they would hire me but they said no. So now I know if I ever get it done I can make it and not worry. Some great advice here.
My late friend Todd C. started a bait co. in the mid 90's making wood glidebaits for muskie fishing. I watched him work to grow the company and the hours of effort he put in his basement making lures. His life was pretty much what you say in this video. He never took a vacation. Seldom went fishing himself because he was in the basement making baits. It kind of cured me of the notion of starting a lure company myself.

I started making unique crankbaits this year, I did get a provisional patent for it as I will be still testing it out for a while yet. I have invested a total of $400 into this so far, I have sold 12 of them so far. I'm going to be doing spinnerbaits, poppers, crankbaits, worms and swim shad starting in November.
It is entirely "hobby" status, but once I file the full patent it will be bigger hopefully. It was beautiful catching a 2lb smallmouth on my first bait. It was such a great feeling, but catching more bass and multiple species on the same bait was even more rewarding. I love making it, i love painting it, assembling it. I love fishing them even more. Thank you for all the videos you do!

I know this is an old video but what I love about your channel and your baits amd everything you do is you film it anyone can claim that there baits catch fish but when you make a video on a color or a bait and then fish with it and its on video that it works then that makes more people want to buy it because they can see it in action. That is my ultimate end goal you and marling baits inspired me to make baits and I know it takes time but its nice to see someone talk about all the downs when it comes to starting a company its not all glory right away it takes time especially with like you said very small margins and maybe small profit when you consider time in the cost which is one thing people don't do when they start anything

Good stuff man. I’m planning on building a brand around this Reel Deal Outdoors thing I’ve got going on. I carve balsa cranks and am looking at investing in a soft plastics setup when I get my tax return this year. I don’t have any ambition to go national or even regional with the lures. I live on a little island and just want to get a local thing going. I’ve been a graphic designer for the music industry for 15 years, and the Reel Deal thing started out as a clothing line idea. I ditched the shirt designs but held onto the brand idea and am just now approaching from a different angle with the TH-cam. I was fortunate enough that Mystery Tackle Box discovered me very early and gave me a job doing a little series on their channel. That’s opened a lot of doors. I eventually want to have a local Reel Deal Bait Co., a line of tees, and of course the TH-cam and a website/blog. I come from an entertainment business background so focusing on the videos and online presence make sense to start, and if they’re successful I can branch out. But great advice, man. Love the channel! Come on over and check mine out if you would. Fishing has been garbage the past couple of months, so it’s a lot of reviews and unboxing. I’ve got a weekly segment I call test tank Tuesday, though, that folks love. I just throw soft plastics in the test tank. Keep it going man. Love the content.

Thank you so much for your comments I am geting ready to retire and had ran the thought about making baits to sell at flee markets to help pay for fishing and hunting trips. One thing I wanted to comment on is the the comment you made about selling baits making a good looking bait, if the bait dosent catch fish it dosent matter how good it looks. I remeber watching my dad pour worms on those old hand pour molds bqck in the 70's and tie 1/4 oz dolf flyies or jigs on his leg and he allways said most jigs you buy has 4 times as much hair as needed and worms are poured to big and wrong coulor

I started my small bait company 5 years ago and choose to stay small as a side bizz. I haven't got a website other than a facebook page on purpose because I know if I had a website I couldn't put the time in to actually ship the orders out within a reasonable time frame because I work full time aswell. I also choose to make my own baits from scratch and not buy molds anybody else can buy and simply duplicate my work. My baits are my own and I create them for myself in the first place. If they want to buy them great and if they don't, fine so be it. I do not want to depend on my bait company to pay the bills so to speak. I just love to make baits and help others to catch fish on them because that to me is the ultimate reward. I'm not in it for the money at all and your story here is spot on. The margins are to small and you have to either stay really small or grow really big in order to make it long term.

I listened carefully all the way through your video and I did not hear anything mentioned about the 10% Federal Excise Tax on manufacturing fishing tackle.
Not paying the tax at all, risks far more than the 10% of gross sales. The tax doesn't apply to manufacturing for personal use, but the IRS has no compunction against pursuing small manufacturers as well as large ones.
Just a thought... an audit goes back 7 years.

Thanks for the video. It spoke to me. I have been making soft baits for years along with painting hard baits. I'm retired going on 15 years now and I do them for me and my friends I fish with. Also for gifts. People tell me all the time I should sell them but I have not done it become now its fun and if I start a business it will be work. I have started and sold two businesses over the years (nothing to do with fishing) and I know how to start a business from the ground up. It is hard work as you stated in your video. I have collected 30+ molds and just the ones I like and fish with. As I said I also like airbrushing hard baits. I buy hard blanks as well was reuse old wooden baits and make the look new again. It is my passion. But somewhere inside me I have a voice saying do it, pull the trigger, put them out there for others to use. I do not need a new business I have been very lucky in life and you are right it will take a lot of money and time but I have the time. Everything you talked about is spot-on and I wish you the very best in business but more importantly in life.

The beginning of the video summed up exactly what I went through when I chose architecture as a career. My family had a construction business but always struggled to find work locally so they were always out of town. When I entered the field I was told I'd get basically no money for 5 years and I watched many people leave because of it. I stuck it out and eventually it's paid off but it sure as hell was a trying time.

    • @thenextstepp

Speaking about doing sponsorships, I used to think by giving freebies I'd get return business so when I first started out I'd give free consultations and alot of times I'd even end up doing their schematic design without charging the client a dime. I had multiple clients not only not come back but they took my design to a draftsman to save money. It taught me a very important lessons, early on, and I'm now grateful for it.

Great video Chris!! I still don't make baits but the fundamental point you make applies to all small businesses. I was particularly interested in the section regarding sponsorship as I have wondered about that from a business standpoint. As a side note...Rick Clunn said "The key to happiness is find something you like to do and find somebody to pay you to do it".

I feel like, similar to most businesses... There's a line between the industrial side, where they pump out berkley, strike king, or (insert other popular brand here) numbers of baits for monstrous contracts, and those of us in what I am going to call the "Hobby" level category.
I literally just pieced together some stuff, and I am going to be pouring my own swimbaits for the first time on my next free day. Watching your how to on mold making was what convinced me it's worth a shot... I'm going to try and do the whole thing from start to finish, with my own molds etc.
Since then, I have probably watched every video you've done lol and I can honestly say, at the back of my mind is, "hey, ya know, this COULD pay for itself... And maybe at some point the occasional new reel, or lunch when we get skunked and fish just ain't on the menu lol
And it's videos like this that have me feeling good about it.
Thanks for the great work, and insight on all these vids!
