Well starswirl would probably search for the elements and find sunset shimmer. However he knows banishing has a tendency to bite you in the future so he would challenge sunset in a way like this: Fine. If you think you can rule you can have this town and I will focus on this one. If you are overthrown you must follow my way but if you do succeed I will give you my journal which has never been seen spells. Sunset would jump at a chance to prove adult wrong and ultimately get overthrown. I can see sunset grumpily coming to starswirl with a horn limiter on. Sunset maybe stubborn but she is honorable.

I think Luna would not be able to handle the issues of Equestria. She is a natrual night owl and couldnt handle it for a single day. She would either give others more power to control it better or equestria would fall apart. Maybe there's a chance that others would just gain more power under her regardless due to her being over worked and unable to deal with multiple people at once? Not really too sure.
Or Clover could've convinced Star Swirl to talk to Stigion about how the pillars idea guy would feel about all that whole being left out thing. Not sure if all that would help but it's a thought of how they don't need to banish anyone in the first place.
You are right. He would defenitly bannished Luna. By looking how he handle villans, probably to different Dimension, or between dimensions. But in my opinion Celestia would chose Starswirl over her sister. And they would rule Equestria together forever.

And for all the events after Nightmare Moon, massive changes. Day Breaker and NM would escape and wanted revenge on StSw for trapping them away (Infinite Eclipse timeline?). Discord would probably escape later on in season 2. QC timeline might happen. Sombra would still escape in Season 4. Discord could be redeemed in Season 3. Tirek would be defeated in Season 5. Cozyglow would most likely be exiled in Season 6. And of course, the final season would be Starswirl, Discord, the 2 princesses, and Clover finally banishing TLOD into stone. And that Gen 5 would be changed a lot. (Probably Opal would be exiled and the separating of all 3 races wouldn’t happen)
Other things that may be different are that the main 6 would never meet. Since the pillars are the ponies that made the elements to begin with. So there won't be any effort to protect Equestria if hell breaks loose. So the timelines that Starlight created when she tried to change the past would defiantly become the same thing that happens in this scenario.

Would the elements of Harmony even work for starswirl? He doesn’t show any of the qualities of them, even before all he went to limbo. At most he only really shows element of magic(it’s questionable even then) could he use any other elements? Or would it blow up on face?
