She's perfect I'm offended, starstruck and lowkey mad at her parents for putting such a perfect person on this earth. She's the reason I have such high standards.
If just listening to some poxy song is enough to help you with life then you really have nothing to worry about... get the fuck over yourself, millennial.
Sunny Jim why? Why do you have to be so rude? Our comments did nothing to you, didn't mess with you, so why do you feel the need to be rude? You don't know any of us or our lives and if listening to music helps calms us down then that's what we're gonna do. Please don't be so rude.
The writer said the song is "lyrically fairly meaningless" and it was more a song to focus on singing. Fleet foxes had actually hoped it would make people laugh but instead it confuses them. The lyrics are kind of about the painful loss of innocence (like sweet kids become drug dealers later on and friendships becoming less important than trends etc) Robin even said he meant for the song to be mildly uplifting like "whistle while you work" from snow white So I guess no one died...
I mean, the writer might say it's meaningless but there are a heck load of references to the french revolution in this. Also, no writer writes something as specific as this without any inspiration.
i always had a feeling that they meant the archangel michael? like he lead the war with god's angels against satan and won, so maybe michael falling dead means that satan won? and that ties in with you saying about the painful loss of innocence (i'm not at all religious anymore, but it kinda still sticks w me)
LYRICS I was following the [8x] I was following the pack All swaddled in their coats With scarves of red tied 'round their throats To keep their little heads From fallin' in the snow And I turned 'round and there you go And, Michael, you would fall And turn the white snow red as strawberries In the summertime I was following the pack All swaddled in their coats With scarves of red tied 'round their throats To keep their little heads From fallin' in the snow And I turned 'round and there you go And, Michael, you would fall And turn the white snow red as strawberries In the summertime
This song is about that old story about the girl who was pressured into taking her scarf off by her lover, and when she finally did, her head fell off. That story is in turn based on a Grimm Brother’s fairytale about a stepmother who chopped off her stepson’s head and, to cover up, tied a handkerchief around his neck. ...Not really sure why it’s based on that, but there ya go!
i think this song is about how during the French revolution the people wore coats that covered their entire body and red scarves to show that they were part of the revolution and they would walk in a pack but if you turned around the others would behead you and keep walking
*Psst Dodie* The lead singer of Fleet Foxes (who wrote the song) said the lyrics are pretty meaningless. He just wanted to start the album out with a song that was focused on singing. He kinda likes how it confuses people.

I know you’ll probably never see this, but I’m genuinely in love with you and all of your music and covers. I’ve been following your journey for years now, and you are so amazing. I wish with all my heart that I could meet you, because you’re so much more than just an artist to me. Ilysm and even that is an understatement. 🖤
@happy little raincloud I think she's having a trick on us. If you watch her blurry "twin" in the mirror she does a little head shake thing on notes held for a bit longer. But it's a good truck with that book at the end ☺️
Melanie asked so here it is! I think of this song as a little frame of a childhood memory - maybe of a five or six year old. He is with a bunch of children, maybe running after the older kids, who just look like a bunch of coats since they are so bundled up. He thinks in his child's mind that the scarves keep their heads from falling off. Then he looks behind him and his friend has fallen and hurt himself and there is bright red blood in the snow. Sometimes a memory like that sticks with you even though you can't remember anything else about it. So Michael is the kid.
Sophia Wilson I have a similar interpretation except that in my case the kids are in a forest and wearing bright red scarves to not lose each other, and Michael falls from somewhere high and hits his head
The people who wrote it said that they were literally just singing random things and that it has no meaning. But I like what you think, though I think it is more like decapitation than just hurting oneself because of... You know... With scarves of red tied round their throats, to keep their little heads from falling in the snow, then I turned round and there you go
Sophia Wilson that’s a really cool interpretation. I personally think it’s about the French Revolution. Everyone’s making their was to the guillotine, and many are wearing red scarves to show they are pro-revolution, as to not get their heads cut off. then this michael person was guillotined and his blood turned the snow “red as strawberries in the summertime” :) I’m not sure if this is totally right but after analyzing it- this is what I came up with!
ajStrongwolf Pentatonix's version is my favourite because I find the backing music and slight echoing quality on Fleet Foxes original a little jarring. I do know they aren't the original artist but I have edited my first comment just in case somebody else didn't.
Eden Gallagher yeah true ahaha but I think dodie’s just has something more coarse than pentatonix’s and just personally I like that more than the original one ahah sorry x
okay first of all, sTOP BEING SO FREAKING GOOD AT SINGING and second i love the hat and burned out is beautiful and i can't stop listening to it. definitely studio-worthy
LYRICS: I was following (6x) I was following the pack all swallowed in the coats With scarves of red tied ‘round their throats To keep their little heads from falling in snow And I’d turn ‘round and there you go And Michael you would fall And turn the white snow red as strawberries in the summer time Sorry if their are a lot of mistakes😬✌️
Dodie has inspired my to write a poetry book on Wattpad! Here is one of my favourites: stars: many people have idols be it a celebrity or even a parent but my idols are the stars because even long after they have died they still continue to shine. - jennifer
my choir and i have been practicing this song for ages and our concert is in a week and it was so cool to hear you sing a song that i've been working on for a while you are amazing and im glad to see that you're back!
My kitten is sleeping right now and it's 3 am and his paw keeps twitching and tapping to the snaps and it's so pure and it's making me so happy! Ive replayed this 10 times and he does it ever time! Love you Dodie for making me and my sleeping kitten happy
This song has so much meaning to me I screamed when I saw the notification Our choir class last year was OBSESSED with this song, as the highschool decided to do it along with other songs for a performance Sense than you can tell if there’s a choir kid around, just by playing this song. If you turn it on I can promise you were all going to start screaming along all trying to do the harmonies at once. I was so nostalgic to watch this thank you Dodie
we sang this with my choir, but the Pentatonix version and now I know 2 of the 5 hand thingies from their music video. thought that was a fact worth sharing 😂 anyway, i really liked this version dodieee!! also SO EXCITED FOR YOUR TOUR 🎄 goodnight xx
yesssss I wonder if anyone considered this Christmas-y 'til Pentatonix covered it. IN ANY CASE, this is a fav of mine, and your take on it is lovely :)
My dad used to play the fleetfoxes song in the car on long journeys into the highlands (i live in scotland) so it kind of reminds me of my childhood. It reminds me of mountains like sleeping giants covered in blankets of snow. I'd bring pillows into the car so i could sit comfortably and watch the sheep and sleep a little. thanks for making this dodie, i showed this to my dad and he loves it
oh dodie you managed to make an ugly lesbian with braces, oversized glasses, a heavy period, proportions that are all wrong, anxiety, ocd and some truly negative feeling circling my appearance feel like a dainty snowflake. i feel beautiful. i feel... okay.
History of the song: during the Russian Revolution, people had to wear red scarves (similar to how Jews had to wear the Star of David during WWII) and if they were seen without a scarf they were to be hanged and so, quite literally, their scarves would "keep their heads from falling in the snow" Beautiful song until you observe the lyrics
Beth Johansson I had heard it was the French revolution and the scarves represented their loyalty to the French revolution. But then again I’ve also heard it’s literally a nothing song so I could be very very wrong 😂
The people who wrote this song didn't mean anything really, they just chose random words that fit well together and sounded nice 🙈 (did my research the first time I heard it) see my other comment for my thoughts on the meaning 😊
There's a Grimm Brothers fairytale where a stepmother kills her son and reattaches his head with a handkerchief or scarf in some versions so that people wouldn't know he was dead (hence the 'with scarves of red tied round their throats to keep their little heads from falling in the snow). I've always interpreted this song as Michael being the dead boy with the scarf around his neck!
i always assumed it to be about the french revolution? and that the people that supported the rebellion wore pieces of red cloth and michael for some reason didn’t and got executed
The original song was written by a wonderful band called fleet foxes! They're really good and I recommend you check them out, they have very nice relaxing and surreal music and they came out with a new album for the first time in four years. Highly recommend!
this video gives me a rlly nice warm christmassy feeling, i watched this so much in December it just takes me back to feeling warm and happy in bed surrounded by my family and really good food and not having to study ughh
I know your book is under my Christmas tree, my mischievous side wants to open it early. The wait is killing me. Also thanks for blessing us with your voice
I love Dodie so fucking much. Like, how can you not? She's literally the image of perfectly imperfect and that's what I love about her. And her music is just the cherry on top!
I just got the book today and it's freaking amazing!! It's so well written and it has helped me understand mental health a little more, it's also given me plenty of comfort from what I've read so far. It feels so good to know I'm not alone in doubting what goes on in my brain. Thank you for writing this book, it's truly beautiful.
Yay! I get to give a quick history lesson: So long story short, there was a time in France where if you believed in God, you were persecuted and even executed. (See: "I was following the *pack* all swallowed in their coats, with scarves of *red* tied round their *throats* ") So, naturally, people kept their religion a secret as not to get executed via decapitation. (See: "To keep their little *heads from falling* in the snow.") Others however, such as this specific prophet named *Michael,* didn't care to hide their beliefs and religious practices. (See: "Then I turned round and there'd you go.") So one winter, this prophet Michael was persecuted and decapitated in front of a crowd for his beliefs. (See: "And *Michael,* you would *fall* and turn the white snow *red* as strawberries in the summertime.") This song, however, was not written about this story, as the creators of this song, Fleet Foxes, claim that they wrote the song to have no particular meaning. However, there's speculation that there's some relation to this story in the song, because it's too much of a coincidence not to be. And you know what we say about coincidence: The universe is rarely so lazy. 😉
I actually read somewhere that this song is about the French revolution. Wearing a red scarf shows that you are a supporter of the revolution, and if you didn't wear it people would drag you to the guillotine and decapitated.
So recently i asked my dad for ur book for christmas and i never really get super cool presents like iphones or really expensive stuff. Most of the time i get crayola stuff and yeh. Anyways he said maybe but not to get my hopes up and i was really sad because when he says that it never really happens. A couple days passed and my parents decide to divorce and im just broken. I go with my dad and just bawled my eyes out that night. A week passed and my dad calls me and tells me to walk home early today and when i get home he has the book and it just made my day and i was so happy that words cant even describe it. He says i cant open it till christmas and ive never been so excited in my life I just wanted to give u a formal thank u dodie for making my life filled with joy. I cant thank u enough. ❤
My dad showed me this song when I was younger, it would always put me to sleep. I just got hit with a wave of childhood happiness on a sick day tysm!!!

Wait i thought it was about the french revolution some one explained it in the official yarn video type thing and in my thought lots of people died
either the editing is absolutely flawless or dodie actually had a secret clone
*i think it's the latter, **#notmydodie*
I love how dodie is like dodie's own annoying sibling 😅
Hedy wasn't available and also isn't as annoying

@Lo? I read somewhere that this particular song has no actual meaning and is preferred for people to think about it how they want
I know this isn't about that but I read that story in like 1st or 2nd grade and I was seriously terrified

Every time I hear a cover of this song, I'm never disappointed. dodie, pentatonix, and birdy are my faves
I did not think I could love a version of this song more than Pentatonix's cover but the rawness of this is astounding.
ajStrongwolf Pentatonix's version is my favourite because I find the backing music and slight echoing quality on Fleet Foxes original a little jarring.
I do know they aren't the original artist but I have edited my first comment just in case somebody else didn't.

who DID die? who is MICHAEL?? what happened??? what a mysterious song
I've always interpreted this song as Michael being the dead boy with the scarf around his neck!
i always assumed it to be about the french revolution? and that the people that supported the rebellion wore pieces of red cloth and michael for some reason didn’t and got executed
eli c. Love this explenation too 👌 not sure about the step mother thing 😂 so much for making it less creepy 😂
Aah, it's been a little while since I last read it, but the fairytale is called The Juniper Tree!
I was just watching dodie , and now I’m here to watch more dodie. Very happy :)
I know your book is under my Christmas tree, my mischievous side wants to open it early. The wait is killing me.
Also thanks for blessing us with your voice

finally feels like christmas-time now that dodie has uploaded a seasonal song
GAH I CAN'T IT'S SO CUTE
I love Dodie so fucking much. Like, how can you not? She's literally the image of perfectly imperfect and that's what I love about her. And her music is just the cherry on top!
dodie makes the holidays 100x better
This is so calming and beautiful!!
I've been binge-listening to this recently, and then you cover it...
Yay! I get to give a quick history lesson:
So long story short, there was a time in France where if you believed in God, you were persecuted and even executed. 😉
Hermione Granger I greatly appreciate that.
bless! this! all! of! this!
Hermione Granger also! they would wear chokers/ribbons (usually) of RED to keep them from being guillotined, as it showed they were pro-Revolution!
You really live up to your username, don't you?
You would make Hermione so proud
I actually read somewhere that this song is about the French revolution. Wearing a red scarf shows that you are a supporter of the revolution, and if you didn't wear it people would drag you to the guillotine and decapitated.
Idk why I didn't comment this when this 1st came out but I love how calming your version of the songs makes me feel. It's super pleasant and nice.
The humming was insane
AGHHHH H idk for some reason the split screen dodie twin made me so so happy

Luiz Henrique Clarkmas
Clarkmas is waaay better. Thank you.
Luiz Henrique oh ofc
So recently i asked my dad for ur book for christmas and i never really get super cool presents like iphones or really expensive stuff. Most of the time i get crayola stuff and yeh. Anyways he said maybe but not to get my hopes up and i was really sad because when he says that it never really happens. A couple days passed and my parents decide to divorce and im just broken. I go with my dad and just bawled my eyes out that night. A week passed and my dad calls me and tells me to walk home early today and when i get home he has the book and it just made my day and i was so happy that words cant even describe it. He says i cant open it till christmas and ive never been so excited in my life
I just wanted to give u a formal thank u dodie for making my life filled with joy. I cant thank u enough. ❤
