How Fast Does Duckweed Grow?

  • How Fast Does Duckweed Grow? I put it to the test in this video we test how long it takes before the duckweed takes over a Aquaponics grow bed.
For those of you who don't know what duckweed is, it is a small floating plant that grows on still ponds. It can cover an area rapidly and because of this can cause problems. Now however, duckweed is being touted as a miracle plant for many reasons including the following:
    •Cost effective renewable energy, biofuel
    •Water filter
    •Mosquito prevention
    •Prevents algae growth
•Reduces evaporation on bodies of water
    •Virtually free animal feed
    •Food for humans
    Duckweed as a Water Filter
Duckweed loves muck. It can clean the water from farms which are rearing cows, hogs, chickens etc. The run-off from these farms can cause an ecological nightmare if left untreated and allowed to leech down into the water table. Duckweed can clean this water by absorbing the resulting chemicals.
In Palestine, they are looking at using duckweed to clean their water systems as they have very limited fresh water available. Using this natural low cost water treatment is not only good for the country but the environment as well.
    Control of Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes love shallow still pools of water to lay their eggs in. This is a major problem in many countries, not just third world countries. Duckweed could be the solution.
Because duckweed covers the surface like a thick blanket, it blocks the mosquito from laying eggs. Malaria, dengue fever, and the Zika virus are three of the diseases spread by mosquitoes here in Brazil and other parts of the world.
Stop mosquitoes breeding and you drastically reduce the number of illnesses and deaths attributed to them.
    Duckweed as Tilapia Food
A massive savings when you are feeding several thousand fish.
We are growing the duckweed to use as a supplemental feed for the fish. The high protein content of it makes this an ideal food for them
It isn't just fish that eat duckweed though. When fed to chickens they produce more white meat.

I got two leaves of duck weed accidentally from Petco with my guppies!!
I didn’t know what they were but I left them in the tank anyway, 10 weeks later, now my 20 gallon tank is completely covered with duckweed!!! There are thousands of them and they look awesome!

The more nutrients the fast it grows. It's why it takes over ponds blindingly fast because the sediment is likely highly nutritional, and fish poo is very good.
Got to be careful on a pond though, it can get so tight it stops the water oxygenating and boom, you have a stagnant bowl of water. If you have plants in the pond, they can die from lack of light and then the last source of oxygenation is gone so your fish won't last much long after.
Some of the stuff made it into my fish tank, it murdered my floating lettuces in short order. But it can't full take over as I have a agitation filter. So I just let the little patches of it go.

you should have added a bunch of leaves, twigs and other natural stuff in the tank first. We grow duckweed in a pond and it grows much faster than that. We found out it is because of all the leaves and stuff like that in the bottom of the pond.
Our pond is about 100' by 50' and it just keeps full of duckweed with all the leaves to feed on.

Duck weed does nothing to stop mesquitos here. I put minnons in with the duck weed. The mesquito larva have no problem growing in the duck weed, and the minnons easily can find and eat them. What is the best water temps for Duck weed here in Arizona the water temp is 81 F. My duck weed lives but I'm not seeing those results. My Duck weed seems to clump together and sink to the bottom of the pond. I've reduced the movement of the water since then , and the 18' pool has a small airpump in on one sdie. I've added a fertilizer in small quanities to the pool. It only has one cat fish in it now. It's summer time here 105F is normal I won't order any fish until December when it cools off!

Inocule Azolla no dia seguinte. Revolver o fundo 1 vez ao dia para suspender nutrientes. 1 vez por sema 10 a 30 gramas de superfosfato. A biomassa duplica a cada 24 a 48 horas. Se for duckweed pode usar mesmo protocolo.
