One of my favorite games EVER!!!!! Great review.. Music for ‘88 incredible during the flight stages. I love the Fireball move.. Uncharacteristic but powerful and sounds incredible.
You too? It made sense to me, until I read some of the Silver Age stuff where he would split into two different Supermen. BTW, Patman, they're called "trunks", not underwear. XD
Same. I only got to play this game once on a school trip to an amusement park, in either 88 or 89. I watched my brother and his friend play the game through, they decided to spend most of their quarters on this game.
I remember the game saying player two was “Capt Marvel” because I had never heard of Captain Marvel before. I think it was written on the cabinet and not in the game itself.
Played this one quite a bit at a local party store back in the day. The repetitive gameplay is probably it’s worst fault, but being a Superman fan as a child I loved it and still enjoy it even now. That’s interesting to see an unused character in the code. Very cool!
Interesting point about the name! But if you look at Superman vs. Muhammad Ali, it’s very obvious that Zaas is molded after the antagonist in that book, Rat’lar. The image of him holding the world is digitized from the issue with some subtle alteration.
Great video. One of the few arcade games I actually played to the end. I always felt Death Of Superman on SNES was fairly close to the arcade game in terms of gameplay.
It also would've been a great port for the Sega Genesis (16 meg), Sega CD (80 meg[abytes]), PC, and Mac. BTW, does anybody know where to get the MAZE of this game?
This has sound tones that are reminiscent of their Rastan game. Looks like it may have used the same System 16 hardware board as Rastan and Operation Wolf, for example. :)
I really enjoyed this as a kid at the local pizza hutt. I didn't figure out about the power punch attack, where you charge it till much later. That makes such short work of most enemies. Like man would saved me alot of quarters. While a tad repetitive, the graphics and sounds really capture the look and feel of the character. They had a copy of this game when I went to the Galopping Ghost retro arcade in the Chicagoland area, so got to finnally complete first hand with a friend of mine a year or two ago when we went.
Awesome, thanks for the story. I've never been to galloping ghost but always wanted to. I was supposed to go last year and filmed some footage for my channel but plans change at the last second and I wasn't able to

I still like the game as well. I try to explain to my kids that in the early 80s arcade games were everywhere. From grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, etc. it was great :-)
The Atari VCS version of Superman was one of my favorites, and I still play it sometimes with emulator software and an Atari joystick USB adapter. One correction, though. You don't rescue Lois Lane. She's invincible, in fact. Her purpose is to save Superman when he is struck by kryptonite, which makes him lose his flying power. When this happens, you have to find Lois Lane (who wanders through the city at random in a smart green outfit) and "kiss" her. She even kicks her leg up when they meet. This restores Superman's flying ability.

Superman is so hard to do as a video game character because he's basically invulnerable, and you need the player character to seem weak so the player can overcome limitations and feel a sense of achievement. Most Superman stories don't end with him just punching the super villain, but rather using his powers to discover the bad guy's evil plot and then using his and Lois Lane's skills as journalists to expose it. That was really hard to achieve in an arcade style game back then, but I think a modern action/adventure/rpg could work really well.

I played this game at a comic book shop I would hang out as a kid. They need to remake it for a console, they can do Batman, why not Superman in a similar style.

"I left my recycling out in boxes and Superman kicked them." ~sigh~ "Oh yeah, well I left my Ferrari parked outside the White House and what do you think he did to that?"
Yeah the 1988 arcade game is cool but after you listen to that super man music for almost an hour you start pulling your hair out BUT if you beat the game you are treated to yet another version of the superman theme which is far better. One more thing i found funny with the game is the villains grab you and appear to start trying kiss you and you have to shake them off or jerk them off idk.
One of my absolute favorite games as a kid, and of all time, still to this day. I played it so many times and at one point got so good at it, I could play through the entire game on less than 4 quarters. I was so disappointed as a kid that we never got a home port of this. We got that terrible NES game instead. I was actually hoping for a port on Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo, but unfortunately it never happened. The Death & Return of Superman was a cool game though and the Superman game they released for Genesis was ok, but I would have much preferred a port of this.
Four quarters, excellent. The NES version was terrible, I think it start out in Japan as a different game and just applied Superman license to it. The death and return of Superman had great graphics but I just didn't care for the game for some odd reason. I did like the Genesis game that came out but I was hoping it was a conversion of the arcade game.

It sounds awesome, but Superman is way overpowered
the superman returns video game is an extremely underrated game and probably my favorite game!
If you can go back and turn back time, for Superman the Arcade game instead of having a pallette swap for Superman, the game would be better suited if player 2 was Supergirl for a co-op beat em up game.
That's where it look like it was going at one point but you're right she would've been perfect
I'd even say change the villains to those from the comics: Brainiac, Zod, Darkseid, Lex Luthor in his War Suit & Bizarro or any of them.
Christopher Reeves will forever be Superman. Donner’s _Superman_ was incredible, but _Superman II_ (Donner Cut, especially), was incredibler!
I loved this game in the arcade as a kid
If you want to find the rom of Superman on NES edited from Sunman, search Google for PacnSac Dave, it's free on his website. It's listed as Superman 2, and has versions with both Zod and Lex as the villain.
Okay, thanks for the tip. I would love to fight against those guys
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Its a decent game. I mean it's no Sunsoft Batman, but pretty good. Way better than the official NES Superman.
I loved the Arcade game as a kid.
Edit: Wow, I didn't knew they planned Shazam as the second player, fun to know.
I wondered why it was so hard to find for consoles.
Thanks for exhaustively talking about the nes canceled version and not even mentioning the much better Master System version...
Thank you
I would say the Superman Returns video game is probably the best game of Superman that has come out so far.
HELLO ! MY NAME IS ÉRIC BLANC, I'M FRENCGH . I JUST SUBSCRIBE TO YOUR CHANNEL . I VERY RARELY SUBSCRIBE TO ENGLISH SPEAKING CHANNEL BUT THE QUALITY OF YOUR WORK AND YOUR ENGLISH UNDERSTANDABLE GIVEN ME A VERY GOOD IMPRESSION . LONG LIVE TO YOUR CHANNEL, THANK YOU

Hello Eric, Thank you so much for subscribing. I appreciate all the nice words you said glad you enjoyed my content thank you very much
Really enjoyed the video. This game stole many quarters from me when I was younger, but I got my revenge... I'm the current high score holder for the game, if you look it up online. :)
I had no idea about the unused sprites in the code, that's pretty cool. I'll definitely check out more of your channel, subscribing now!
Great, thank you very much
Thanks for the video this game was a lot of fun I had it on MAME and it's definitely worth a try. I always thought that the boss was Brainiac I didn't know it was a made up character, good to know.
Thank you very much, I appreciate the nice words
God, just listening to that awesome arcade soundtrack makes me feel invigorated.
That's the greatest superhero theme in history
Even Danny Elfman's Holy Batman theme is second, I agree.
There is a Superman NES game I remember playing. Maybe you can include that sometime?
I can recall playing it and not being too fond of it. Perhaps I can do a superhero themed episode
where did you find info on that Captian Marvel/Shizam connection?
An Interview with the developer
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries that you had or someone else has? either way that is cool, I've heard the Shizam connection before by another youtuber, but I wanted to know how much water that holds
Christopher reeve as Superman is the gold standard in my opinion
After 40 years nobody has stopped him in that role
The Superman movie: Superman by Christopher Reeves (he got paid 500.000 for both!!)
The Superman Tv show: Ruby Spears' SUPERMAN
The Superman Videogame: This one....There's no other. Any other of future creations will never capture the 80's feel that Superman has been known and beloved for.
I agree 100%,He will always be Superman to me him
Best superman game ever
Absolutely
I played this game at a comic book shop I would hang out as a kid. They need to remake it for a console, they can do Batman, why not Superman in a similar style.
I agree, they should
Used to play this game back in the day.
FASTER THAN A SPEEDING BULLET... MORE POWERFUL THAN A LOCOMOTIVE... ABLE TO LEAP TALL BUILDINGS IN A SINGLE BOUND!
I played this a lot back in the day. I liked the alternate Superman better.
I enjoyed it a lot
I really enjoyed this game in the arcade , wasn't a total quarter muncher. Great video as always
Glad you enjoyed it Thank you
I absolutely ♥️ this game back in the day. But it kills me to know that player 2 was originally supposed to be Shazam instead of a Superman palette swap. That would've been awesome!
It absolutely would've been. Shazam or Capt. Marvel was always one of my favorites
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Shut the front door, mine too! You have excellent taste, sir!
I was reminded there was a "Superman Blue" and a "Superman Red" once in the comics, might be where they got the idea to pallete-swap?
Yes, I mentioned this in the video
Alternate title - Superman: The Shin Kicking Simulator
LOL!
I had the Atari Superman game but because I tossed the instructions I never knew which direction to have Superman fly.
It's a game you definitely need the instructions for
If not for Howard Stern I would not know you. How crazy is that?!
LOL, funny how works isn't it?
"I left my recycling out in boxes and Superman kicked them." ~sigh~
"Oh yeah, well I left my Ferrari parked outside the White House and what do you think he did to that?"
Yes the song that plays when Superman and Lois are flying above Metropolis in the movie. I think it was called "can you read my mind?"
NES one looks like it shares resources with Sunsoft's NES Batman.
Yes it does
Need an Arcade 1Up cabinet of this and the Batman '89 game.
Absolutely
