Richard Pine 100% It’s the same cymbal. I was in a music store the other day and they had a 16” and I hit it and it sounded exactly like my Paiste 602 modern essentials... I had my cymbal bag in the car and brought it in to the store and compared them.... virtually identical
Sabian once went Big & Ugly, now Meinl goes Bright & Shiny haha to be honest, I like byzance traditionals better, these ones really sound like Paiste and I've been always avoiding such sound. anyway, I can't even imagine how flattering it is when a company like Meinl asks you to represent their new cymbal line. you totally deserve that Austin, huge respect from a Russian fan and best of luck!
They remind me of the Paiste PST7's, which I returned. Bought a 18" of these and also got ride of. I'll stick with my Meinl Cymbals Byzance B16DUC series
I'm glad meinl decided to get more clean cymbals into their line. I don't know about you guys but I'm not a big fan of the dry crashes in the byzance line. (The rides and chinas on the other hand are fantastic)
Fantastic product review, Austin. Thank you for the good talk, and for the great demonstration. Definitely gives a clear picture of what they are, and how they differ from for instance the Byzance Traditional series.
man! really good sounding cymbals, those hats are amazing!! but you know what? I love even more the way you snare sounds! please, give us a little tutorial of what you use and the way you tune that snare!
Well you could technically have a "pure" alloy if what the alloy consists of has no impurities in it, but yes, it's an oxymoron because an alloy is a mix of metals making it "impure".
Best review I have seen so far. I bet you were happy when they decided to send you a set, a lot closer to the Sabians you used to play. To me, they definitely have a Paiste sound. Somewhere between 2002 and Sigs.
They're trying pretty hard to go after paistes market. Allot itself is probably close to signatures but he hammering and cumbal profile are closer to 2002 black beats.
Wish they made a 17 inch crash. I love 17s give me the control of a 16 but open up with the explosion of an 18 when laid into, imo. Nice bright cymbals.
meinl 602's, meinl is smashing everyone's cymbal game except Istanbul for contempory recording, Constantinople jazz or kerope neo-funk n soul, new special drys in electro (but i definatey prefer the extra dry thin stuff to the new special dry sound wise)... i think meinls pretty much winning last year and this year or at least neck n neck with the ever popular zildjian
They're made of B12, so they're not exactly going for Paiste's sound. They're evolving an alloy that they've been well-known for for years since the Soundcaster series.
dobosar87 they're B12, same as Zildjian's S series and the same as Meinl's Soundcaster line. I imagine they're just the Soundcasters but repackaged differently.
To me at least, they sound somewhere between a Paiste 2002 and a Paiste Signature Full. A little more complex than the 2002, but maybe not quite as nice as a Signature. Excuse the Paiste references, because that's all I know. They are actually a B12 - so that puts them in Signature territory. Anyway, yeah. Very nice cymbals!
@@lucianisidro On Thomann's website said it's b20. Overpriced in any case. You can buy Turkish made cymbals for much less money, at least here in Europe. If you look at the Meinl Wikipedia page, you'll see that "Byzance series are hand hammered in Turkey". There are many Turkish brands, such as Diril, Istanbul Mehmet, Anatolian, Impression, Murat Diril, Aegean, Istanbul Agop, Bosphorus, Masterwork, etc. And they all make topnotch hand hammered b20 cymbals (they don't bother making entry-level brass crap) and sell them at lower price than Meinl, Sabian, Zildjian and Paiste. And Turks invented cymbals, so they know what they're doing.
@@markomarkovic5729 I've been a Paiste man for 40 years - ain't gonna switch now! I have some nice Paiste Twenty Series cymbals, including ride and hi-hats, which are handmade in Switzerland from Turkish blanks. Otherwise I use Signatures, 2002s and Rudes.
@@lucianisidro I don't stick with just one brand, nor bother with what it says on the cymbal, but rather use those that appeal to my ear. Paiste is unrivaled when it comes to mid-level b8 series, especially older lines such as 400, 404, 505 and 802 (old Alphas). My problem with the big 4 (Paiste, Meinl, Paiste and Sabian) is that their top lines cost too much because of the brand name, and the same quality (and better) can be found with Turkish manufacturers at a much lower price. Just my 2 cents.
Meh. I don't get the point of this line, the Byzance traditionnal already covers the need for general purpose cymbals, and they still have the Meinl sound. Those are much more generic, they sound like Paiste's. Sure it's a new option but it lacks personality.
Not quite. They're made of B12, so they're not exactly going for Paiste's sound. They're evolving an alloy that they've been well-known for for years since the Soundcaster series. I guess you can say these are more akin to Paiste's Giant Beat series, but considering those are made of B8, these still stand apart on their own.
so basically Meinls version of a Zildjian A or Sabian AA? Someone already said this but traditional Byzances have alot more character and to me sound a lot better, but I do lean toward darker cymbals for sure.
AG Drummer it's more like Meinl's version of Paiste 2002s, Meinl's "Zildjian A" series would be the M-Series of cymbals, which are machine hammered B-20 cymbals :)
Sound pretty clean. Remind me of Paiste sound
MAN that snare is tight!! I love it.
That snare is tight!!! love it.
These remind me so much of the Paiste 602's and the Modern Essentials. Fabulous and shimmery.
Richard Pine 100%

exactly my thoughts.

I know that this is a cymbal demonstration video but god damn that snare sounds killer!
I just got these hats. I really love them. I enjoy that bright, washy sound
Dang that 22" ride sounds great
Isn't "Pure Alloy" an oximoron?
I believe so!
lol, first time reading the name, I thought so.
Well you could technically have a "pure" alloy if what the alloy consists of has no impurities in it, but yes, it's an oxymoron because an alloy is a mix of metals making it "impure".
Snare reminds me of the the track 2 Princes..but yours sounds a little better.

If anyone else hears that slight high pitched undertone, it’s darker in person and sounds so much better. Videos can’t do them justice!
I have the 15 inch hats and the 20 inch crash from this line, they pair really well with my Zildjian K crash ride
Nice review, Austin!
Could you, please, make a video about YOUR approach to drum TUNING.
Cheers
I still miss the MB20, mb10 and Soundcaster custom, they were great and popular cymbals, why Meinl eliminated that lines?!
They didn't. The Byzance Heavy Hammered cymbals are the mb20's renamed
If you like the soundcaster fusion line..... in person the pure alloy custom are similar bout 80%
They're the closest cymbals to 1970's Black Label Paiste 2002 IMO.
Nice video🙌🏻
The hammering and look of these cymbals is very close to Paiste Giant beats.
This whole recording sounds amazing but that snare is tuned perfectly.
I realize this is a cymbal review but which snare are you using in this video? Beautiful. 😍
Got the 14 hats, 20 ride and the 16 crash.
hats and ride sounds amazing.
Crash could be more aggressive. (for me) ;)
Love the vids man keep it up!
Your cymbals are recorded very well. What kind of overheads do you use?
Paiste 602's and the Modern Essentials... The Same...
I love that ride :)
They're trying pretty hard to go after paistes market. Allot itself is probably close to signatures but he hammering and cumbal profile are closer to 2002 black beats.
Nice....I never really liked the earthly sounds of Meinl , these are more my type.. what would be the price ranges , any idea ?
That 20" is so nice
I love the snare
Anyone came on this video after seeing rdavidr?
Des cymbales que j adore et que j envisage d acheter , crash 18 et 20 mais pas sans les essayer
Wish they made a 17 inch crash. I love 17s give me the control of a 16 but open up with the explosion of an 18 when laid into, imo. Nice bright cymbals.
What snare is that though god damn that sounds sexy
Reminds me of Paiste Giant Beats and Formula 602 Traditionals. Hehe
They do sound like paistes. But I also think they sound kinda like classics customs. The crashes at least
Hey Austin,
What do you think about Zildjian K cymbals? I just want to get you're take on them.

Nice Cymbals. ANYWAY Benny Grebs new track couscous has some mental parts in it. its crying for a study the greats THANKS.

Oh I didn't know they were cheaper, that's kinda cool.
Those are nice.
Good stuff? I miss seeing your videos...... not as frequent. Is it because you're so busy with studio/gig work?
Thank god. I generally like what Meinl has, but that whole dry series sounds like a stereotypical trashcan lid in all the wrong ways.
Ryan Crane yo whomst mans is this
All sound great Miked
Sounds like Zildjian K Dark series
feeling the same !
Duuuuude they do sound like 602s

let's be honest, these are big band cymbals.
Paiste 2002, except $80-$90 less per cymbal,,,,,
The look nice but they're pretty meh.
Snare is so distracting.
