- DAY 1 OF 2: I went to New York for a work event, but had the opportunity to extend my travel and spend time with family. While I was with my sister and her husband, we did a lot of fishing! Funny enough, I was actually able to catch several fish, including one species I have been wanting to catch for a long time... Redfin Pickerel!
Not only that, but I was also able to catch some bullhead and a smallmouth bass. Stay tuned for part two where I catch even more species! As I have talked about in the past, the Daiwa Presso Travel Ultralight is such a cool rod. Glad I brought it with me! Learn more about that rod in this video: • Fishing With The DAIWA...

Hi Ethan. To answer your question, the “color” of the bullhead more or less comes from the color of their chin barbels. So a black bullhead has black barbels, yellow has whitish/yellowish, and brown has half black half yellow. The one you have at 5:13 is a brown bullhead, which you can also identify because of its mottled/camo pattern on its body (which also gives it its species name nebulosus). Don’t go off the body color for species; fish will change color depending on environment and stress. I used to have a pet black bullhead; when he was happy he was black and when he was stressed he’d turn yellow.
Also i wouldn't recommend lipping them. Out of the 4 big catfish types in the US, bullheads probably have the most painful.
Hello Ethan i actually caught the only redfin/chain hybrid in vermont a few years ago. I can show you pics if you have an email.
SUPER helpful information!! Thanks for taking the time 🤠
I would concur those were brown bullheads. Also i commiserate with the bleeding after lipping a bullhead. I lipped one of my first bullheads (a yellow). It wasn’t a big fish but it bruised my thumb and broke the skin. Never lipped another bullhead since.
Ethan, received my first order from Mule Fishing less than a week ago. Literally blown away by these plastics, no exaggeration. Horse fly has already caught me a handful of fish.
Enjoy your time here in the Northeast too lol. Highly recommended going after some Redbreasts, iirc a species you guys don’t have in the Midwest. One of my favorites.
I wish I could have found some Redbreasts! Thanks so much for the support!
We used to catch bullhead up at a family friend's cottage right outside of Rose City (Just northeast of West Branch up I-75). It's the only place I've ever seen one anywhere I've been personally, but I'm sure they are everywhere considering how much water we have here in Michigan! Great vid as always brother!
I need to do some more looking in Michigan apparently!!
"I'm gonna lip him like a bass" I yelled MISTAKE in my head as soon as that left your mouth 😂😂😂
Hahahaha oopsies
I caught a couple of bluegill and a nice redear this morning, throwing your donkey tail jr’s on a double jig rig (in karma and pasture fire ) I quite like them for multi species 👀!
Love to hear it! Thanks for the support 🤠
Awesome video here and great fish catching as well
Thanks Shawn!
Great video and great fishing, cool you caught a bullhead catfish!! I caught one this year, bluegill and perch, it was fun!! Have a good day and week. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Heather! Tight lines 🤠👊🏽
@@FishAnything your welcome
Great in video, thanks for sharing!!
Thanks Bradley!!
6:04 Michigan bullhead are a waiting game but do get chunky
I will find them one of these days!
Definitely some great content. Love the videos and merchandise. God bless brother tight lines!!
Thanks Caleb!!! Hope you and the family have a safe and fun 4th of July
@@FishAnything you as well brother
Looks like you're in the albany area. I usually go up to the catskills in the summer. Tons of fun trout fishing in that area.
Seems like a beautiful state to explore!
Funny you said that about never running into Bullheads in Michigan. When I was a kid my family would go up to the Sagatuck area for vacations and we caught tons of bullheads there haha. Aside from smallmouth bass they're basically the only fish I've ever caught in Michigan.
As for identification, I think you're right about them being brown bullheads just based on the coloration and the darker chin barbles.
I’ll have to go check out Saugatuck and see if I can find any 🤠😂
@FishAnything Douglas Veterans Walk under the A-2 Bridge where it crosses the Kalamazoo River was the bullhead place to be 16 years ago. Lmaoooooo! Haha hope it makes a good video if you ever make it over there. Miss that place.
Keep up the great work. Just caught some bluegill and the smallest green Sunfish I've ever laid eyes on yesterday with a Mule Horsefly
Nice work, brother!
Thanks BP!
"I'm literally bleeding" while laughing..... 😂😂😂
I was too happy to worry about the pain 😭😂
Not sure if black or brown bullhead but a definite redfin pickerel. Congrats on your catch .
Thanks Greg! I was so happy to stumble on that fish
Can you do a mailing list for when you restock bass bundles 🙏
I’ll send out an email notification to the mule fishing email list once the plastics (and bundle) is restocked!
Fishbrain says the first fish is a yellow bullhead. I catch them a lot on twister tails here in iowa
How do you travel with the tackle? Do they make you check it in? Been wanting the travel presso. Wasn't sure about tackle. Also do you recommend 5'6 or like a 6'?
I like the 6’ a bit more than the 5’6 personally. And I just packed it in my carry on and it wasn’t an issue at all. Just avoid knives.
I hope you soaked that wound in disinfectant! Those bullheads are pretty nasty. 'Round these parts in Massachusetts, the fishing strategy usually starts with "How can we avoid bullheads here?"
Lol I probably should have! Either way, I’m happy I ran into them. Neat experience!
Ethan just CRANKING out content like a pro TH-camr! I've caught a few brown bullheads in my home lake - always a nice surprise on ultra light gear!
lol I’m doing my best!
@@FishAnything It shows my guy - it shows
What you really had to watch out for was dropping it and it’s barb going through your shoe, and in this case your sandals! When you dropped it I winced but luckily you didn’t drop it on your foot
That would have been a bad situation 😂
BROOO can you tell me about traveling (airplane) with fishing gear! Can you please make a do and dont video. I'm going to sub right now.
You can basically fly with any hooks/lures from what I’ve experienced! Just don’t try to take on knives/tools.
Grab the cats from the belly. The dorsal fin spine facing away from you.
Good intel! Thanks
Good bait fish.
New York? Yikes 😳
Just watch out for those fins on baby catfish. Your gonna get speared.
I was looking out for them as I handled the fish
Wow that is one place you couldn't drag me.
Well the fishing was at least good :)
Oh hey! I recognize those twin bridges and cidery! Hope you had a great time in the capital region!
It was a really cool trip! Definitely hope to get back
I’m such a goober. So glad you were able to make it out and get some fishing in!
lol you’re a goober that I thoroughly enjoyed fishing with. Thanks again 🧡
I FINALLY got my hands on a presso after seeing your videos on it many moons ago. Fishusa had a few in stock so I nabbed a 6’6” UL and it’s been tons of fun 😎
It’s a great rod for the price. Big fan!
Do they last? I’ve been wanting to get one but they look flimsy
Which length presso was it and what did you think of it?
It was the 6’ and I love it for what it is! For having 4 pieces and being able to travel with it, it does awesome.
@@FishAnything thanks!
Oh wow. I caught my first fish (sunfish) on a small lake in New York State in 1956 or so. (My dad and mom were Salvation Army Officers stationed in Albany. My dad was the youth guy so he ran a Salvation Army Camp. My two brothers and I fished all the time at the camp. The camp was called Saddle Lake Camp and was located in Moreau, NY. Up near Saratoga and Glens Falls.) We also caught Bull Heads in that lake. This really brought back some childhood memories that I haven't thought about in years. Thanks for sharing!
That’s so cool! Thanks for sharing a bit more of your story, Chip!
Hey chip my son saw you reply and sent it to me my parents and uncle bought that back In 1988 and still own it to this day but the lake is now gone wish stinks cause I fished it back when they rebuilt it just wanted to mention this to you
@@taperboy70 Oh wow. That's pretty interesting. Too bad about the lake though. I have fond memories of that "camp." I used to wade the shallow end of the lake and catch newts in the grass there. I also used to turn over logs and limbs in the woods amd catch them after they left the water stage and turned bright orange. Thanks for letting me know.
I hate catching bull head, which I do a lot with your baits, slimy, pokey and hard to unhook least favorite fish
lol they might be a nuisance to deal with but I was really happy to catch them!
Which length presso are you using?
6’ model! Great rod
Fishing under the twin bridges! Man this was cool to watch as a local.
That’s awesome! Glad you appreciated it 🤠
I'm having amazing results catching pond sunfish/bass on dropshot and slip bobbers, using the 1" Berkley PowerBait Nymph in Pearl Olive Shad, everything eats it...
Thanks for the heads up!
I don’t know the different species of bullheads but man they’ll spine you and they bite hard for small fish! Hahaha had a buddies pond that was way overpopulated with them.
They are mean little fish! I like them 😂
You caught the "jimbo" special
🤔 not sure I follow lol
so a black bullhead has a yellow belly like the ones you’ve been getting brown bullheads have a lot of dark spots and a white belly and a yellow bullhead has two yellow bottom whiskers they also look a lot more like eels. they are a nuisance where i live they are everywhere in my lake but i think they are pretty cool big ones fight hard on light gear
They are definitely cool fish and fight good on ultralight gear. Thanks for the ID tips :)
Nice Bullhead!!!! Where is that first spot??? Subscribed
I honestly couldn't tell you even if I tried sadly. I was with my brother-in-law and he just shuttled me around lol
are bright colors important or is it based on the location?
It was basically because the water was super muddy so I wanted something that popped and was easier to find from the fish
Awesome video Ethan! I’ve seen it in several of your videos but how are you liking the Shimano Nasci? I’ve been looking at it for a while now and like what I’ve seen of it. Would love to get your opinion tho! Thanks as always, love the content!
Honestly it’s a solid reel for $100! I have only had one minor issue where the line gets stuck in a small crevice in the reel handle, but it’s not a major problem.
Yellow bullhead, rounded tail.
Thanks!
What area of NY you in?? Buffalo area here!
I was in the Albany area
Love it, something about the red horse fly drives catfish nuts man. Looks like it was a great time!
Thanks Ramon!
We have Bullheads here in Coloma MI on Paw Paw Lake. I caught my first one not that long ago this year.
I need to find some Michigan bullhead!
@@FishAnything My fiancé Diane just caught one Saturday evening on Pipestone Lake. She’s a magnet for them. She hates them. 😂
The Presso travel is such a good rod for the money. I love my 6'6". It goes everywhere with me.
I’m so happy to have the 6’ back in my possession. It’s a sick rod
The red horsefly is a bullhead magnet in NY
Nice catches, both of those catfish you caught appear to be brown bullheads based on coloration, though I find one of the best ways to identify bullheads is by looking at the chin barbels.
Thanks for the help!
@@FishAnything No problem
I also caught my first bullhead on a horsefly! How funny 🤣. Just made a $150 order for my mom and I because the lures and jigs are just so reliable! Tight lines!!!
Thank you soooo much for the support!!
Great video and work in for your trip. Any really muddy bottom ponds and forest preserve lakes have bullhead. Lots of fun on ultralight. Blessings brother
I definitely want to catch more!
where is this spot?
Yeah I work too much! Gotta get back in the swing of things, almost forgot the Presso is on my to-buy list. Also gotta check your store, love that jig box.
Thanks for the support! Nothing wrong with working hard 👊🏽👊🏽
Great video and great fishing and I really need to get some of your baits and jigs
Thanks Ray! Truly appreciate the support
5:25 😂😂😂😂😂 awaaahhhhh
Have fun with family and enjoy the scenery! Some nice catches!
Thanks David! It was a fun trip :)
Redfin pickerel in a mudhole! That was cool 😎
It was so exciting to me lol
Hell yeah man! Welcome to upstate
Such a beautiful part of our country!
WTG Ethan
👊🏽🤠👊🏽
First view and comment. Hope you’re doing well Ethan. When will the Donkey Tail Jr be back in stock?
I’m working on it and it shouldn’t be much longer! Maybe 3 weeks ish
What is this? Fishing for ants?
