This video is great. I found a pfaff 332 with table and whole bunch of feet and accessories this was so helpful. Sewing is such a lost art.
Hello Alexander!
It´s nice to see the old Lady. I own a Pfaff 360 and a 362 and love my old ladys very much!
Warm greetings from Germany - Monika -
Good to see you back again.
Thank you for such a great video. I watched twice, probably will watch again! I'd love to see more on this machine . :)
My mother was given a 332 when a friend of hers passed away, as she had her own, it was offered to me. I used it to sew canvas yesterday after not using it for 15 years and it performed flawlessly, i had to look up manufacture date and was told 1957 as the only year. If only they built things like this today, that worked so well. thanks for video.
I inherited my grandmother’s 332 and while I am not half the seamstress she was, it’s still in perfect working order and I have no plans to ever replace it. They really built a great machine that year!
Another great video. Thanks for all your help to those of us who sew for a living.
Thanks for watching!
I have had two of them Pfaff 332S at one time great machines like you say. One I traded away for a classic car part to a lady friend out of state and the other I still have .Germans are the best when it comes to engineering for sure .One was given to me and the other I got in a Thrift Shop for $18 .Great Video!
I have this same machine. Got it for cheap because it "wasn't working". I figured I would try my hand at repairing it. All I was told is that they knew nothing about it but the needle wasn't going up and down. When I got it home, indeed the needle wasn't going up and down...but only because it was set to wind a bobbin! $40 was well worth the risk. Original "suitcase" and everything, even original purchase paperwork, from 1958 if I recall.
Nice Score!
So good to see you back!! These Pfaff's are awesome. My Pfaff 90 is still going strong after all these decades. Last week I fixed up my mom's pfaff, which essentially made ALL my clothes untill I was about 8 years old ;-) Trip back to memory lane to see this 332 in such good condition. :-D
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. You have provided an excellent tutorial for the use of the PFAFF 332 . I am so pleased with its many features and the precision of German engineering.
Thanks for this video. That's a classic machine.
Real vintage quality.
Glad to see you covering this model! I think this line of machines is under appreciated!
I'm not sure if you're aware, but the "automatic" marketing refers to the needle-threading system; if you find a copy of the original manual, it will explain. It doesn't seem very useful to me, but it's a neat idea!
I've been lucky enough to find two of them complete and in like-new cosmetic shape that I've given as gifts. Both needed the same repair, which I have read is common: The original Pfaff grease dries out and becomes sticky and varnish-like on machines that sit for a long time. In my experience, this mainly impacts the mechanism that reads the cams. Some careful disassembly, cleaning, and oiling has gotten both of my machines back in action and sewing flawlessly, even with the original belts. One of the machines I gave to a family member and it has been used by an avid sewist constantly for years, without any repairs and minimal maintenance.
While I hate that some people market machines like this as "industrial" or "heavy duty" in the second-hand market, they will sew through some heavier materials than a lot of other domestic machines.
In my opinion, if you need a truly do-it-all portable machine at an affordable price, these old free-arm-convertible Pfaffs are the way to go.
I should have showed that feature but I am kind of like you in terms of how useful it may be and given that mindset I simply overlooked it. Thanks for your thoughtful comments.
This looks like an awesome machine. Are you saying it has a needle threading mechanism built in?!
My go to sewing machine ❤
That was the longest 6 month wait since your last video
Great to see you put out some more content!!!!!
Hi Alexander, thanks for another slick well edited video. We (your followers) hadn’t heard from you for a while so I was getting a little concerned that something untoward had happened in your life. A pleasant surprise when today’s notifications included you.
Cheers from Brian in NZ
Thanks for the video. I got one and don't know a thing about how to use it. I've never used a sowing machine. I've only hand sown stuff....ugh
I hope to find more on how to use a machine.... It looks hard at this point.
I’d recommend starting with some scrap fabric to get the feel of it, but I’ve been impressed with TH-cam tutorials on how the Pfaff! I still video chat my aunt once in a while when I forget how to do something with my inherited Pfaff though….came on here to try to figure out the embroidery part.
Thanks for the pointers. Have the flat bed version of a pfaff, and need to oil that baby up and get it stitching again.
Thanks for the new post, Alexander. Love your articulate and informed channel.
That is nice, thank you.
Убеждаюсь что старые машинки самые лучшие
Thanks a lot for uploading this important video. I have this machine. I love its craftsmanship. Best regards
Really appreciate the thorough explanation. Thank you!
😎👍
The free arm is a machine style I've been interested in. Thank you for all you do teach all of us! All the best, Andrew @BranchAndFoundry
Nice vid but more glad to see you back. Your vids are a steady diet, Great go to for me when sewing things are fighting me.
Thank you for your support. 🤗
Very informative and useful video, thank you! I will get the exact same machine tomorrow for some denim work but I got even more excited for it after watching this video! Those decorative stitches and how the machine automatically sets itself in some places.. Magical. The world of sewing machines is a magical one defnitely. Best wishes!
Have fun!
Pretty cool old machine, great video!👍
Thanks 👍
Love what you do for us brother
🙏
Great video and very informative. I got the exact same machine passed down to me recently and I’m trying to get a hang of it. Thank you for this tutorial 😊
Thank you very much for your tutorial. It's really helpful !
Wow a blast from the past. My grandmother had a old Pfaff 260. There is nothing like those old embroidery stitches. Never seen a machine that could make a better satin stitch
Would love to find one in excellent mechanical condition
You have a great Brother In Law.
Thank you Alexander Dyer! This is very informative. Beautiful machine! 'Hi' from downtown Montréal! Liked, subscribed.
Awesome, thank you!
Damn, came with a suitcase - big like a TV from 1983!
😂 Not quite that big, LOL, more like a TV for 1963!
I have a 360 and it is a little beast, love it. I like it better than the Bernina 830 record.
Interesting, Thanks for that.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ as usual. Very interesting machine.
I wish you could visit finland and help me fix my baby Pfaff 332, thanks for posting
Great to see you again, man!
Thanks Jason!
Nice machine, good video.
Sou do Brasil, gostei muito das explicações parabéns.
Amazing thank you!
Very nice machine!!
I was thinking get one those with auto stitch patterns. There so many model I don't know what the difference. I also picked one early Pfaff model R made in 1904 with original wood case and base and have a hand crank sewing machine.
I use my 332 mostly for paraglider repairs
How do you like the quality of the stitch? Is it regular and even?
@@theprojectproject01 perfect!!!
Hello Alex, hope you and your's are doing fine...healthy and all. Merry Christmas.
Couldn't be better, Thank you and to you and yours.
Great video
That was interesting, thank you.
very cool! thanks!
Thanks for the video. The pattern wheel also has 40 more patterns on the reverse side. Since you didn't mention it I didn't know if you were aware that there are more patterns to be had. I have both the 332-260 (this is the model that came from the factory with the embroidery mechanism the 332 is straight and zigzag stitch only) and a Necchi Supernova Ultra. Both are fantastic machines. I prefer the Pfaff. It just "sounds/feels" better as it runs. Maybe just my imagination. Thanks again.
Thank you for that information.
Wonderful video I have one of these machine it was a gift from my late father I lost the foot pedal when I moved it was left behind by mistake. Am desperately wanting to find another do you have any suggestions.
I have a 332 with none of those decorative stitch options, just straight and zig zag. It's a powerful machine and I'm trying to use it to sew heavier materials (1000d Cordura 420d packcloth) to make bags. Something isn't quite right though and something is slipping, resulting in the needle hitting the hook sometimes. There must be a set screw that need ssome tightening somewhere.
Needle deflection is common when feeding is difficult and "helping hands" intervene. You may be pushing the limits of the machine. Check you foot pressure and feed dog height.
@@AlexanderDyer this is more a matter of timing. The shaft that turns the hook seems to be slipping and the needle ends up mistimed and fails to enter the slot and the bobbin case. It's hitting that rotating hook assembly before the slot comes around.
I've definitely learned not to force the fabric through and bend the needle forwards and backwards. A good lesson.
The cleated machine belt makes it almost impossible to slip. Hope that is not what it is bc they are expensive.
Hey Alex, Have you figured out how to use the buttonhole selector. What does the K and N stand for. Great videos, Thanks.
😊
Nice review! I see one for a good price just wondering if it would be good for leather bag and shoe work?
I would not think so. You need an industrial for that type of thing. th-cam.com/video/sBavkfataiM/w-d-xo.html
Hi, I'm looking to get an old heavy duty sewing machine for my mom. She has a basic modern plastic sewing machine now that is giving her issues and wants to replace it with one of these old type machines that were built to last.
I'm looking for something that is easy/simple to work on, parts easy to find/still available, etc.
What brands/models do you recommend I keep eye out for? Basically the Camry/Accord of sewing machines that will take care of most household sewing needs and work day in and day out. Thanks. I appreciate your help.
I like most of the Singers with all metal gears. You will have to look under the hood to be sure but one model that comes to mind is th-cam.com/video/4w4F4KSeg1M/w-d-xo.html
@@AlexanderDyer Excellent. Can you also recommend a few to keep an eye out for amongst the Japanese made machines? Thank you.
Hello Alexander! Thanks a lot for this video. It helped me to change the bobbin spooling tire. I think, this machine got a threader, does it? Greetings from Germany!
When you pass the thread between the tensioner discs 11:40 , have first the tension set to 0, to space the two discs
Lifting the presser foot should release the upper thread tension automatically so you don't need to dial back the tension manually.
is there any sew machine post best that can attach the flat bed to it like this one? This one almost fits my needs, which is awesome though. Particularly, I'm looking for a heavy duty home sewing machine, which can sew leather( heavy fabric) and also suitable to sew shoe. Which is kinda lots of features in 1 machine if there is any like that.
Post Bed for leather. You need an industrial sewing machine or you will never be satisfied.
Hello Mr. Dyer,
Can you tell me why my PFAFF 332 starts sewing then stops abruptly?
The machine forwards fabric only a few stitches then stops. I have the top needle threaded as directed. Could it be the feed dogs not up high enough? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
What does the stitch look like?
This.machine or paff 260 ,work with two nedle ,(aguja melliza) ? and sew zig zag 3 points in straigth line ? ,I am from peru
What’s the max thread size I can use on this beauty? Can it sew leather?
Do you know what the max weight of leather this machine or the 360 can handle? I would like to upgrade my current sewing machine to do some leather projects at about 3oz layered.
I have never recommended a home machine for leather projects. I recommend an industrial triple feed sewing machine. This is the best advice I can give you based on my personal experience with drop feed sewing machines either home or industrial is that they are not designed or adequate for leather and upholstery. th-cam.com/video/avr3pN_udMA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tvZhPUwcpojN39wV
Hi, I bought the same machine and returned it because the black piece embroidery attachment which makes the decorative stitches was missing, and I want to know why some machines of these same models 332,360,362 don't have this part? decorative stitches are very important to me, I would appreciate if you could help me because want to buy one. thanks in advance. like and subscribed.
I don't know if you still need the information, but those machines with the decorative stiches usually would have the additional "Automatik" in their name . The normal machines would just sew straight or zic-zac-stiches. But it was possible to modificate them with that special "Automatik" device afterwards. Sadly (at least in my experience fromm Germany) often the normal machines will be falsly advertised as a "Automatik"-machine. You can Tell the Differenzen by Pictures of the machine in question. If it is an "Automatik"Machine, it will have that flap and dials in the lid of the machine.
The normal machines (at least speaking for the 332) were produced because they were cheaper. Let's not forget that the 332 was the absolute high-end-machine for non-industrial uses produced by Pfaff at her time and even one of the first free-arm-machines ever(at least as far as I know). So the 332 Automatik was really expensive and Not everybody could afford it. Hope that answers the question.
I just picked up a Pfaff 230 from an estate sale, I can't wait to dig into it. There were also a bunch of old singers and some Columbia model 300 blind stitcher and a Merrow M 4DW-60. Do they have an value to you ? I;m up in the Northeast. Thks JC
A bit far for me. Thanks all the same.
@@AlexanderDyer Its a shame they are sitting in an open box truck just rusting away.....thks for your help btw... you've saved my sanity quite a few times with your videos :o)
Thank you for the great information. I have a gorgeous Singer 241-12 that I am having some trouble with. Can we text? (I will willing to pay a consultation fee) Thanks, Angie
I have this machine and loved for many years. After a large project I cleaned and oiled it and unfortunately the feed dogs have dropped and I cannot get them back to where they should be. I had the cover off and I don't seem to find the problem. Is the timing off? Can you give some advice before I end up donating it, we don't have any sewing machine repair shops around here. Would appreciate your help ...
There is a knob that raises and lowers the feed dogs. You may have changed its position when you cleaned your machine and put it into the dropped feed dog position. Here is to part in the video where I identify this knob. th-cam.com/video/YUpIGfPwJuY/w-d-xo.html
@@AlexanderDyer Thank you for your reply, however, I think my situation is a bit more complicated than just turning that knob. I had the whole throat plate out and removed the feed dogs to do an extensive cleaning (I know now that was a mistake). I probably moved something out of place and now the timing is off. When I dropped the feed dogs back in place, they are lower at the front than at the back. There must be something that needs to be engaged or lined up, but I don't know what. I am so frustrated with myself :(
What is the difference between singer 99 sewing machine + 99K? If you could let me know. Thank you for your time and Have a nice Holiday.
The city / factory that it was manufactured in. Singer had many factories.
I’m looking for same machines phaff 260 u have one for sale?
Hey Alexander, I just picked up an old Pfaff 230, and I was thinking of putting a servo on it. Ever taken one of these old vintage machines and ran a servo? Any tips on how to do it?
I got nothing but let me know if you make it work.
Hey great video. Do you know if this machine would be any good for leather work. I am a newbie and looking for a new hobby because of this dirty covid 19. I watched a few videos and they say machines should have a thick thread capability and a walking capability
This is what you want. th-cam.com/video/sBavkfataiM/w-d-xo.html
I use "sewing machine oil" sometimes referred to as "lily white" . Here is a link for reference but you may need to find a closer source. amzn.to/3p8IU5M . These machines are definitely worth trying to get back into service. Good luck and Thank you from Missouri in the US.
Yes respect ✊
👊
do you know what needles are good for this machine?
Thanks for the demo! I have this machine as well and love it. Not a sewing enthusiast but need it from time to time. I had issues with the thread tension and disassembled that part to set the lowest setting higher. We were sewing hdpe with ripstop structure, as a part of an expandable pagoda. I still have issues with the thread tension. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Seems to be very difficult to dial in the stitch in the middle of the layers. Any suggestions on how to calibrate that? Greetings from Berlin
This is a very common problem but a little bit of understanding may help your situation. please watch this video and let me know if it does the trick. th-cam.com/video/xax0RTCqYTk/w-d-xo.html
@@AlexanderDyer Thanks for the input. That was my go to video at the time. 2018-19 I disassembled the tensioner and pulled the spring apart for bit more tension. That helped to bring it in range. I'll get back to you when I got back at it. Happy new year ✨
I have had to replace springs that were too light in pressure. Maybe a stiffer spring may help you.
@@AlexanderDyer good tip. It's an old machine that makes sense. Possibly to have a set of springs for light and heavy material could be good. However the bobbin spring is not that user friendly. Might need to have different tempered springs for that too
Hi Sir, is that a 220v Machine? Thanks
Nice Machine, Alexander. Great instructions. Was that machine ready to run, other than a little oil, when you got it? Or did you have to do some adjusting? It sure looks well made. I don't own any Pfaffs at this time. But I have my eyes open.
Just cleaned it up since it was pretty dirty, lots of oil to get everything freed up and then the bobbin tire but it did sew straight out of the packing peanuts.
How does it perform with leather?
I know this video is 3 years old but can someone tell me if you can stitch leather with this machine? if so, how thick?
This machine would stitch leather in an applique setting but any sort of seam construction would be very onerous and burdensome. For leather and upholstery and thick fabric construction I recommend a triple feed sewing machine. These home machines are best suited for garments and curtains and such.
Nice~!
My grandmother gave her PFAFF 332, but the reverse is stuck, can you help me? Thank you
Clean and oil all moving parts.
Thank you for replying, I will do
It is working, thank you very much!!!!
I have a 362 but this 332 appears to be of higher tier machine
Mr. Dyer in a past video you mention you sell sewing machines but I don't see any for sale on your website or ebay store. Is that a past venture or do you still sell them?
I will have this one up for sale soon on eBay.
@@AlexanderDyer I have been looking for a good used walking foot or unison feed locally. In videos you have mentioned the Juki 1541, the Singer 211 and the Consew 206RB. Are there any others to watch for? What do you think of the "portable walking foot" like the Sailrite LS-1 - Consew CP206RL - and others that look to have been made by the same company?
What camera do you use Mr. Dyer?
Any camera will do really, many You-tubers use theirs phones. Having said that, I use this ... amzn.to/34f3IRI
can you link to the Dial print out for embroidery?
I have put that in the description for you. Thanks for the suggestion, I think some other folks will also find that useful.
How did you put a servo motor on it?
This does not have a servo motor. It is a pretty standard ~1 amp home sewing machine motor.
Can it stitch rexin seat cover
This is a home machine for garments and the like. For upholstery .... th-cam.com/video/sBavkfataiM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=J9FyKnxcWFGwFgJ0
Tengo una y la quiero vender
The stitch is a regular straight stitch.
Where to locate needles?
I use eBay
It's actually 'Puh-foff'. You can see the 'P' right there, in the name.
I 'Kuh nō' (know) what you mean.👍
Good solid machine but the stitching looks rough.
I think what you are noticing is due to the coarseness of the fabric. That is a stiff and rugged material for outdoors like awnings. I also notice this when I'm sewing heavy canvas.
@@AlexanderDyer I see what you mean.
Are you the guy I lost the auction to on that site?
Nope.
