thanks for the awesome video! im the hair dyeing friend since ive been bleaching my own for over 3 years now (somehow its not a brassy yellow mess, but actually a nice platinum). i had a friend ask me about a secretive hair dyeing style so i looked into peekaboo highlights. your tutorial was perfect. i have a feeling it'll turn out great :)
Sounds like you have a great natural talent 💕 love peekaboo highlights for something a little different BUT not too crazy! Thank you for watching
I am a new fan from Morocco. I read about this technique and come here to see its practice. I am so happy because you make everything so clear. Thank you a lot.
Welcome from Morocco! I am glad to have you hear watching ❤️ thanks for the support
This is the best video ever !!! It’s oddly satisfying to see how precise you are folding the foils with the tail of your comb too!!!
Omg thank you! Lots of practicing.... it is definitely what makes your color successful. Precise foils 💕 thanks for watching
would people normally do the peekaboo look on the back section of the hair as well??
Yes, a peekaboo is also considered the hair from the top of the ears down to the nape of the neck 🙂
you are a great instructor!!! 2 thumbs up!
Thank you so much
Great video. Love watching them
Lee thank you so much for all the support and your lovely comment
Typed 'detailed, babylight, peekaboo tutorial' in search box, this one im almost positive is the first video recommended video. I must say though one side only, the keyword 'detailed' i got in abundance, for which im ever so grateful. However this video did not show up in the line up of my first search; 'Babylights for Dummies'.
Thank you so much for your input! I’m very glad you were able to find it and watch my video
this video was super useful and easy to understand so thank you so much! i was just wondering whether it was possible to achieve a similar result without bleach and using just 30 volume developer and a dark blonde hair dye. I know colour doesn't lift colour but as i have virgin hair i figured that the dye would be able to lighten it slightly as i want quite a subtle look as my hair is very dark and i worry that by using bleach it will go too light. or in order to achieve anything do i need to use bleach and then dye it after with a lighter brown colour?
You are correct about color not lifting color but with virgin hair yes you can use just normal hair color to get lift. It definitely depends on what level you are starting with. Say if you are a level 5 ,which is a dark to medium brown and you want the color similar to what I created on my mannequin, you could use a 8a with 30 vol and get create lift. I would definitely use an ash tone because when lifting with color you will see a lot more warmth and to avoid hot roots or a warm end results you need to use the 8a to cancel those warm tones.
@@TheAngeSchofield okay thats perfect thank you so much for your help!
Yes of course! I’m happy to help
Thank you for this amazing video! Liked and subscribed, super detailed. This is exactly what I wanted to achieve with my hair 😍
May I ask a quick question please, with this technique is there only highlights on the side portion of the head? What about the back portion of the head, would you apply the highlight straight across instead of in an angle?
I only put about 4 to 5 foils horizontal in the back crown part of my head and leave the bottom dark (my natural color) so it looks like a peekaboo! Thanks for watching
Thank you so much for your quick answer 🥰 appreciate it lots. Wishing you the best
@@yrmabliss5287 of course happy to help
Great tutorial, question so instead of highlights can you do this with color dye instead of bleach, and if it's color do you have to use foils?
Thank you, yes you can for sure. If you decide you want to do a darker color on already light hair or just darker than your current color you can definitely do that! I would still you foils just so the color doesn’t get on the sections you want to keep natural unless you plan on being very neat and clean 😄
@TheAngeSchofield Awesome thank you so much for the info 😆❤
@@shaleeisom9055 happy to help
Hi, im going to ve doing this soon however I'm dying all of my hair black and the peekaboo bit red. Whats the best way to do it without the dyes mixing/ running into eachother
What are you currently starting with? If your hair is lighter I would do the red peekaboo first and then what is left over so the dark hair color. ... if you section everything off it will stop the colors to not mix together and when you finish with the red just wrap it up in foil
@@TheAngeSchofield my hairs naturally dark brown but I dyes it black, thank you for the advice!
If you dye it black it maybe be hard to get it red .... need to do the bleach first to lift some of the color out first... then do the red after you rinse out the bleach
@@TheAngeSchofield would using a colour remover be enough
@@jessmccoll7250 that should lift some of the color out..... it really helps that you are wanting red because it will lift probably to a warm tone ❤️
Hi! I am trying to dye my hair and I was wondering if I absolutely need foils or no?
Also would I need a hair filler if I bleached my hair and dyed it to a dark brown
As far as foils go they will be needed if you are try to bleach some of your hair and keep other sections dark or if you are using multiple colors. For the hair filler question: when you are bleaching and the lifted color is orange or reddish you will be fine dying it dark brown. But if the hair bleached is super blonde you will need to fill... and to know how to fill you would just need to look at the color wheel
So my hair is now platinum and blonde from bleaching but my roots are starting to show which is very dark brown. Should I use 30 on my roots? And then should I rebleach the blonde or just tone it? And should I do my peekaboo before or after my bleach? my peekaboo will be red.
I would do the red peekaboo first and rinse that. Then apply the bleach onto your roots, they say 30 vol shouldn’t go on scalp depending on the bleach that you are using but with how dark your hair is 30 vol may be what you need... just know it may make you itchy. I wouldn’t pull bleach through your ends if you like the lightness of it already, you should be able to just tone everything together after you do the retouch of your regrowth
@@TheAngeSchofield thank you so much!!
will the colors show when I dutch braid my hair?
Yes!!! That’s the best part in my opinion... the colors look fabulous when curled or with braids
@@TheAngeSchofield thanks!
I came across this video and I'm searching for the video that you add color on the bleach.
But I'm not finding it
Did you make that video
I did make a video on that ❤️ here is that video

Super helpful 😍😍
Thank you 😊 appreciate your support
Hi great video, I would love to do this style for myself.
I never use bleach before, I do have colored hair at a red level, so could please tell me what do I need and how long is it safe to leave the bleach on, thanks ahead for answering my question ❤️ I also left my thumbs up for this great video
Thanks for the support. It all depends on what you want your end results to be.... red is hard to lift so if you want a super blonde I would suggest waiting until the red is faded.
If you are ok with Carmel and some warmth to the peekaboo highlights you should be able to do 20 vol for 15-20 min and then you will need to potentially use a toner if you want a cooler end result. I hope that helps
@@TheAngeSchofield thank you for answering , it gives me great help on deciding how to do the bleaching lol this will be my first time and it's a little scary 😜😂😂 well hopefully it'll turn out ok, thanks again 🤗
Can I use a highlighter cap to do a peek a boo
Yes you can but you may not get the exact results as in this video BUT you will not need to do foils 😊
Great video!!! I learned a lot!!
Thanks for watching and the support 💕💕
I have a client that has precious blue, pink and purple peekaboo highlights through her hair. She is all brown at the moment and wants the peekaboo back but I don’t know if I should use bleach with a 30 vol to lift through the previous color and then recolor those highlights? She wants purple and pink back in the hair.
It all depends on how long ago she did the color. You can do a test strand roughly in the area that her previous highlights and blue pink & purple was at. To get a better idea of how it lifts for you and what volume you should use. Or you can’t try Malibu CPR
Hi! I was wondering if 40 volume bleach is too much for mh hair. My hair is very dark and healthy. Will it be too strong of a bleach for my hair?
Are you just doing peek a boo? I would say if you are only doing a 2 or 3 foils that’s fine but 40 vol lifts very quickly and really dries out your hair. So you definitely don’t want to leave it on for a long time... especially in your ends
@@TheAngeSchofield yeah, im just doing peek a boo. Will putting coconut oil in before bleaching affect how well the bleach works??? And will it minimize the damage?
@@joselynsixtos407 I have never used coconut oil in before... I would be worried the bleach wouldn’t lift as well with the oil being in the hair. The best thing to do is lower vol developer for longer (it doesn’t open the cuticle up as much so it’s less damaging) with dark hair sometimes you just have to do it more often
Hi i have a question will any bleach work? Since i have just recently bought the wella tub bleach it lightens up to 7 levels, i have dark brown hair it looks a bit light in the sunlight though do you think it will work just as fine?
Yes definitely!!! Whatever bleach you have should be just fine. It’s not about developer... depending on how light you want your hair... 10 vol 1-2 levels of lift, 20 vol 2-3 levels, 30 vol 3-4 levels 40 vol 4-5 levels roughly . Happy highlighting
@@TheAngeSchofield thank you!!
Would you keep the same placement of foils (the ones behind the ear) to go all the way around the head? In the video you only did one side, so just carrying on the same technique throught the hair? In that situation would you leave hair in between foils?
I just did one side for a fun trendy look. You can definitely do the same thing on the right side of you want the same type of look and to have balance
what would you recc to get a grey blue color on black hair?
Depends on how bright you want it... if you are okay with a dark smoky color you wouldn’t have to go super light with lifting with bleach, maybe a level 7-8. Then guy rang has a very a pretty smoky silver
Hey Angelina! I have virgin black hair and I'm planning on dying the underlayer of my hair red but since i don't want to use bleach first, i was planning on using the L'Oreal Excellence HiColor thing with 40 volume developer. However, all the videos I've seen about dying the underlayer is always done with bleaching and then a semi permanent dye so I'm just asking if it's okay to use a permanent dye for the underlayer since HiColor is a permanent dye.
I don’t know much about that particular color line but from what I can find online it seems like you will be using it correctly ❤️ no need for bleach or pre lightening since this color lifts and tones to the desired red
How'd it turn out?
I've bleached my hair, and now I'd like to do a red or burgundy on top and leave the blonde as the peekaboo. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Definitely doable!!! Hard to give you an exact formula since I’m not sure what level your blonde is sitting and your desired results/level of red
@TheAngeSchofield I'm going to do one more bleaching tomorrow to touch up my roots because I didn't leave the bleach on long enough. My haie will be at level 9 blonde.I find conflicting info on if I should tone it before coloring or not. Also I saw a video that says for color you dye twice. The first time with color a shade lighter (to fill hair) and then the shade darker. What's your opinion ?
@TheAngeSchofield Also I have naturally curly ,spiral, hair is there certain kinds of dye that work best for curly hair? I'm not set on color I know I don't want to go very dark again as I'm getting older and it's not flattering. I only look good in cool tones and there's not much available in box dye for cool toned reds that aren't either too dark or too bright. I may go with some light brown and blonde underneath.
Hey! I want to do this to my hair. But not sure what color. I’m thinking grey/silver but scared it won’t look good. The other color I’m contemplating is like a caramel color. My hair is currently dark brown (natural hair color)
Grey/silver is very hard to get because you do have to lift the hair to a very pale blonde color. I would suggest doing the caramel first and then you could eventually keep lightening that strand
i love your video the best of the twenty plus i just watched! I'm looking for this type of highlighting but where it carries more throughout the back underside and with 2 or 3 colors. i dont think i want to bleach my entire underside like most do in their videos, because i want the contrast of my dark hair but i also dont think the super thick chunks ive seen are what i want. specifically i have aqua blue and purple in mind and i have dark brown hair....any additional tips you can offer on placement technique?
I'm pretty sure I've lost my mind but quarantine has had me watching too many brad mondo and other hair videos lol. I figure you only live once so no better time to go big or go home than when quarantined at home lol
I don’t think you sound crazy, I think it sounds amazingly fun! 😜 So with you wanting Aqua you will want to lighten your hair or sections underneath to be able to see the Aqua and have it be bright. Purple (depending on the type of purple or tone) you maybe be able to get away with using permanent color and not have to bleach it first.
As far as placement it just depends on how much you want to see. I always like the vertical slices and sectioning like this video and depending on how much you want in the back with determine how many foils you do. If you want thicker chunkier colors you can do two foils back to back (no hair left out in between) with each foil holding 1/2 inch thickness of hair (well saturated)
I hope this helps and makes sense
thanks it does make sense!
Awesome can’t wait to hear what you decide
so we ended up doing more of a balayage technique for lightner but with your peekaboo placement in mind. split bottom of head in half and did slices in diagonal from ear to neck, saturating ends and blending it up towards root with a v shape for bleach. we also left a half inch untouched in between each foil. got myself to a brassy blonde. toned with purple shampoo for a week.
Then today we did same parting and slicing diagonally. we had aqua, dark purple and then mixed aqua and purple for deep blue. deep blue shade we did as an inch of root color then each slice was sectioned into three. and hubby would go in same order for each slice but start with next color so they alternated. my hair looks like mermaid hair! super happy with how it turned out!
then we did
It sounds amazing!!! I’m so glad you were able to get mermaid hair ❤️ I would absolutely love it if you found me on Instagram @theangeschofield and tag me In a picture of your new hair! I’d love to see a pic
How long did you leave the bleach on the hair?
For the mannequin probably 15 min
Could I have them bleach it like that, and add like a neon green myself at home over it?
Yes, you can! But you have to make sure the blonde is REALLY blonde... at least a level 9. Otherwise you may end up with a funky color.
Fantastic tutorial. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for watching and supporting The Hair Lounge
My 9 year old wants to do just the bottom tips of her hair in purple. She has dark hair and I bought a semi permanent argan oil hair dye. Do you have any tips or suggestions with regards to the bleaching part? I don't want to do anything close to her scalp. I figured the botton of her hair is safe to do and we can always trim it off before school starts.
@@Aishya476 since her hair doesn’t have any previous color on it I would use 20 volume on her ends and just do the tips of her hair where she is wanting to the purple. I would lift it to a pale yellow depending on how bright she wants the purple. If she wants dark purple you don’t have to lift it as light. If she want bright purple you need to lift more 💕 hope that helps
@@TheAngeSchofield It does, thank you very much.
If I am doing purple color, should I let them get lighter with the bleach?
Yes I would! If you put purple over an orange color you will get more of a russet color. Burnt orange look... the lighter the blonde the better it will look and the purple will be brighter
Can you please do a video on how to add colour on top of it? Like a green or a blue maybe?
If you watch my color fail video you will see why I can’t put green or blue over the top of this Carmel peek a boo. The hair needs to be lighter or else the underlying pigment will interfere with the end results
can i use red shade?
If I make them thicker, will they look good?
Yes definitely that would be super cute.. and show up a lot more
What's the exact color is this ?
Of the halo extensions or what I put on the extensions?
is it possible for me to do this on my own? (as in only me) Because its the pandemic and I'm not allowed to go to the salon so I figured I could try it on my own. would light brown look good on this hairstyle? ( light brown highlights with black hair) im worried that my hair will get severely damaged because it is already dry as virgin hair
It is definitely possible to do on yourself! Since you have virgin hair (zero color even 4 years ago?) you should be just fine since you want light brown highlights. Don’t use a high volume just start with 20 vol
@@TheAngeSchofield thank you so much :)
can you still do a peekaboo hairstyle with layered hair?
Yes you can… it just might be more visible depending on your placement with the layers

I have really thick hair so I shave the bottom half of my hair and with trying to do peekaboo is confusing can u help
Typically you like the hair to peek through. Even though the bottom is shaved I would still leave a thin veil of hair that you do not color around your perimeter. Then you can pick where you want the colored peekaboo to be on the interior of your hair. I hope that makes sense
I have medium brown hair naturally, with a 3NA on the ends with, 4/5 " of root of natural. How do i lift the ends and root to an even blonde, i assume i do the ends first and circle back to the roots after the ends have processed for 15 min at least? :s
So is it 3na and 4/5 with hair color? Or is that just your natural hair color and you have never colored your hair?
If it’s colored you will definitely have a harder time to get the blonde to an even tone. But you would definitely need to do what you originally said... first start with lifting the ends and then move to the roots after you get a good amount of lift. The roots will lift a lot faster because of the heat from your scalp
I wanna dye my hair black with red peek a boo throughout my hair . Bleached my hair about 2 years ago (just the ends) and since growing out I have now used a ginger color on my hair now on my ends . Can I just put black dye on top of the orange or do I need to use another color first then apply black and then bleach the sections I want for the peekaboo ?
Since you say it’s ginger you should be just fine putting the black over the top of that. Normally when you are depositing color you do need to use a filler color of red or orange but sounds like you already have those tones. I would suggest on the peekaboo don’t but the black and do the red there. Depending on the level of your hair currently and the desired brightness of the red you may need to do a little lifting with bleach. If your hair is already light enough and the level is close to the level of red you are wanting to do it’s safe to use the color without needing to do any extra steps. I hope that’s helpful and sorry for the delayed response
Hey babes my hair color is naturally exactly like the mannequin (jet black ) do I need a 30 developer or a 20 developter? I just want the front to be highlighted only, I don’t have any chemical / bleach in my hair
I would suggest just using 20 vol since you don’t have any color on your hair. Do the mid shaft and ends first then after your process for a bit then you can apply on roots (roots or the hair close to the scalp processes fast due to the heat from your scalp)
@@TheAngeSchofield thank you queen!
@@Niinidoll absolutely, I’m here to help
What kind of toner should I use if my hair is a tad bit lighter than the mannequin? Its a pretty dark brown. And I haven't dyed my hair in about 5 to 6 years.
Have you already lightened your hair? And Is it lighter than the mannequins after the highlights?
@@TheAngeSchofield i have not lightened my hair
What are you trying to accomplish on the dark brown hair with the toner?
Like blonde peekaboos
@@danielasilva7511 it really depends on how light your hair gets. If your end results are a level 10 but yellow you need to apply a 10V or if it’s a level 10 but orange you need a 10A toner. It’s all based off what you are able to lighten to... On my mannequin I used 6A with a splash of 3A and blue color shots because it was pretty orange
can i use bleach wash instead of actual bleach ?
You could but you probably won’t get super bright results
So to die the High Lights do I apply the permanent hair color next? Because my hair doesn't take semi-permanent at all.
It depends on what you want your end results to be. If your a looking for a fun bright color you can use a permanent color over the top of the highlights. I do always suggest Demi or semi permanent just so it is easy to change the color later if needed
Also, you can check out my Temporary Fashion Color video if you want something less permanent and you can try some different colors. Here is the link! th-cam.com/video/ebTG5r8AhOY/w-d-xo.html

I have blue/black dyed hair rn and want to try peek a boo red. Obviously dyed dark but am also naturally dark would I be going for vol 30
So with your hair already colored I would suggest maybe using a color remover on the under/peekaboo section to remove the color. It will be less damaging than using bleach and then you can do the dark red color over the top 💕
