God damnit I'm reading the light novel right now. And main character is such a problematic character I hate him so much sometimes... but still going through this. 😆😅😇
We do this every few months, sometimes we put the campaign on hiatus to do something different while we do some character work. Sometimes it’s a class reset or working on a home brewed subclass to meet character concepts based on a multi-class combinations that were chosen early in the game but doesn’t fit the character progression as intended. We handle some things that have already been used by a character is through feats, create home brew spells, or a magic item that has been hidden.
This is going to be such a fantastic resource on par with your Session Zero video. I ran a Session Re-Zero about 2/3 of the way through the campaign I ran in Eberron after I took a burnout hiatus. It got everyone on the same page about plot and character development, it helped me lay the groundwork to introduce elements from backstories that hadn't come up yet and tie up loose threads over the campaign's last act, and one of my players respecced his Battle Master to a Swashbuckler to carve out a new party niche in a way that felt true to his intended character because he felt like he was getting outshone by our Wild Magic Barbarian Sorcerer (who I let try out some homebrew to make that combo even remotely playable. Would not recommend you let anyone who knows blackjack probability play blackjack for his ability spread). If I ever run another long campaign, a session re-zero (or a few, depending on length) is an absolute must, and I will revisit this video several times before I run one
Speaking of the DM playing- Monty, I’d love to see you do a one shot again, with Kelly as DM. That was one of the most fun episodes of Untold Tales y’all had.
Today I was about to plan a "re-zero" session for my campaign that resumes tomorrow! XD Incredible timing. I didn't really know what to call it, but I did want to do a recap and reassess the campaign.
We had a really good re-zero, our party had just finished a Demon hunter campaign where portals were spawning demons everywhere kinda like the game oblivion. We had defeated the litch sealed the portal and my character the Warlock completed his personal story Arc found common ground with his patron and made peace with his parents. There really was not much else story wise for my character to do. The only hanging thread was my character almost killed another party members cultist parents. So at the start of campaign two I had a totally new character who had his own completely different goals and party dynamics. My previous warlock character was pretty integral to the story so It gave the DM and myself time to write up a progression for my previous character before I eventually played them again! It was a great way to take a break from a character, experience a totally new character that changes the party dynamic and write a good continuation!
This is also general life advice. You need this in every kind of situation where a team is trying to make an afford together. Always. We do dynamic scheduling. We are playing Wednesday or Thursday, sometimes on Monday. Rotating players. Four out of seven can play. Sometimes a player GMs a single session, so I can play for once. In February alone we play 6 times. The players write a summary after every session for the players who missed out. The players decide what they are doing next and if the want to go after the mainplot or if they want to do something else. I am a very blessed man.
This video comes at the perfect time as I'm onboarding a brand new player to a party of experienced PCs at level 5 and there's some moving parts going on, including multiple timezones. I always appreciate being able to check in with my players to make sure we're all on the same page.
Just hosted our very first re-zero tonight and I’m so glad we did as it really helped our party flush out our characters relationships and expectations. Also assisting our DM in letting him know what we thought about the campaign and how he could help our characters have clearer goals. It lifted so many pent up feelings for our group and noticed how much easier it was for everyone to get into role play better. Thanks so much for this video!! You guys are great!!
We're having a session ReZero today in fact! This is great timing, I'm retiring a character that I played when the game started and bringing in a brand new character who is totally foreign to the party.
You guys have perfect timing. I’ve been the group GM for a while, but one of my players had a campaign going on the side. We realized we needed to focus on one and chose mine. Now we’re finally returning to his campaign in just a few weeks and I see this. This’ll be a great resource for us thank you dudes.
Definitely needed this video, my playgroup has been on a hiatus shortly after they killed the Lord of the Feast. Now I have a good excuse and way to get them back together!🎉
I went into this thinking I wouldn't pick up much, but I'm impressed at how much I learned from this! I'm definitely going to be showing this to my DM, and I'll be using these tools in my own campaigns as well. I also really enjoyed getting a peek behind the scenes of the Drakkenheim game
I love this. Thank you!!! I’d scheduled something like this for our campaign for the coming week, and this video is perfectly timed. You guys continue to make fun, engaging, useful content, and I really appreciate it.
I'm on the last episode of Dungeons of Drakkenheim and got a bit worried about what's going to happen to ratlings. Well, now i know, they got a submarine 🙃
I did one after a summer DMing break! It really helped everyone get back into the swing of regular sessions and because some of the players joined the campaign about 12 or so months after the original start, it put everyone on the same page moving forward.
You guys rock! Your channel covers everything from character creation to dungeon master issues. Thank you for sharing this information. I am going to include these ideas in my next campaign.
For years I have been DMing a campaign where we meet every 3 to 9 months, through the pandemic I think it may have been well over a year between sessions. I had to start meeting with each individual player for about an hour before our next game just to remind them and myself of the details of the campaign. I've actually found this to be very useful because when I meet a week or two in advance it gives me ideas to throw into the gaming session so it's even more enjoyable for everybody. I have also been using these sessions to probe to figure out what the players are interested in doing such as what kind of magical items they would really like to get their hands on or what kind of experiences they want to have and I work that into the session so they have a blast. One of my players is really feeling like she's having difficulty with her characters and the mechanics and what abilities do you use so we've gotten together separately and then dream sequences where her character goes into these different battles and she gets to practice between sessions. It has really worked well to keep people engaged in the campaign and having fun with the sessions.
group i joined recently does a "last time on..." and does a recap of the last session or two (or more) at the start of every current session.. they do this because the group itself is like, 15 people but not everyone is there at all times. like when i joined up it was only two others and the dm. it helped a lot for me cuz i couldnt remember what was going on till like, 3 or 4 sessions in. lol
I did this last night after watching this video after we wrapped up fighting The Crimson Countess and a custom boss for the player story that wrapped up the first major act. The party has new characters, stories, development and they'd all just drifted in their goals. This went over amazingly well with them and we got a lot of positive and improvements for them all as well as things I can do to make things more enjoyable for them going forward. Thank you for the content as always!
Outstanding advice! We came to what I thought (as DM) was the end of a 2+ year campaign. We are currently playing another ttrpg but the group has decided that when we resume DnD they want to keep existing 12th level PCs. This advice is timely and spot on. Thank you for this and all of your contributions to the community. Good work dudes!
Perfect timing, I'm having a session zero in 2 weeks for our group that ran Lost Mines in 2020 and are now returning to the characters for Shattered Obelisk. But since then we've changed DMs, added a player, and we've all learned a lot about D&D!
Excellent advice! While I'm not doing this with D&D, I will be having a re-zero with my Cypher System sci-fi campaign in a few weeks. I have a few new players to add to the couple who are still with me, and everyone will need to be brought onto the same page before we begin--in terms of characters, motivations, rules, etc. I may do another re-zero toward the end of the year, to make sure things are on track and to help manage expectations.
Great timing! Our group had lots of life stuff get in the way for a few months and we’re going from virtual to in person since we live in the same city again now. Starting back up tomorrow!
This is really helpful, thanks. Just heading into a new arc after 50 or so sessions and have been thinking about having this kind of chat with my players.
My campaign is coming back this month and the party really needs to feel more like a team. I was thinking of making a "Session zero 2" and you guys delivered exactly what i needed lol
One topic I'd love to see you dudes tackle is with the 2024 rule changes coming in, how would you handle a mid-campaign character update? I have a personal horse in this race as my character in the campaign I play in is a paladin, but conceptionally would make much more sense as a hexblade (her soul is tied to a magical weapon that gives her extra powers). Had hexblade existed when we started I would have made her one, but we started hexblade hadn't been published yet. My husband also plays a monk that focuses on dancing and unarmed strikes... which is a dead ringer for the new bard subclass. How would you recommend players/dm's handle major character updates in extremely long running campaigns when new content is published that more accurately fits the character idea? With the new rules coming out, this could be a relevant topic for many tables.
We do plan to do a couple videos about switching over to the new rules, when is it appropriate to do so, and is it worth it… so stay tuned, I hope those videos help.
This could not have come at a better time. My team is on a three-week hiatus after coming to roughly the halfway point in my game. The advice here is SOLID GOLD! *scribbles notes furiously*
I absolutely agree that the point of a secret is for it to be revealed. My DM decided to have a secret vampire PC in our latest Ravenloft campaign, and I was playing her. I kept the secret for ten months, and despite putting in a lot of work to keep the secret, I was really looking forward to a satisfying reveal, and I'm glad the party enjoyed it too (even if I did have to lie to, manipulate, and generally gaslight them).
This has come at a helpful time for me to use in the future, very sadly one of my players recently passed away, and two more players are expecting children this year, while no one wants the campaign to end, a hiatus is required with how we want to proceed without our friend and his character, as well as how we proceed and play with all these kiddos coming! So it wouldn't shock me if this campaign gets put on hold for at LEAST a year if not a little longer.
My first ever campaign got to lvl 5 before I had to move states, the DM and his fiancé (also a player) got a new house, and one of the other players got a new job… safe to say I’m never playing my warforged fighter again 😅😅
@ 22:55 oh man! Yeah, yeah, yeah! What did happen to the ratling submarine? That was killing me for months waiting to see what and where and how it was going to re-appear! Eventually I totally forgot about it until now!
For the first time ever, I'm planning a session "Sub-Zero". (I.e. a session before session zero) This is going to be where we where we decide which genre we want our setting to be, and which TTRPG system delivers on that genre. One guy wants a horror-survival Mad Max, another is just tired of fantasy, and another wants Cyberpunk. Gotta figure out how to make that work... All I got so far is Paranoia, but I think there might be some tonal mismatch there.
Re-groups : i found the best way to actually finish long campaigns is to have larger pool of players (5-6 players works well), knowing that one or 2 might not make it to a particular session but you still get to play anyway. The show must go on! Skipping weeks is deadly to a long campaign.
woah, our group literally had a session re-zero because the party got total party captured and we wanted to figure out where to go from here. most agreed to continue with this story but some wanted to respec their classes a little bit, because they werent having as much fun with their multiclass builds as they thought they would have. also there was a shaky group dynamic because two characters werent happy with each other in game (players were cool, just their characters werent) so we talked that out. we also wanted to have more bite-sized quests and story archs, instead of a long drawn out campaign where the bbeg is a threat for the entire campaign. i will make sure to bring these questions up really quick before we begin the next session!
Ooooh.. sO mUch to unPacK from that video, great you will be taking the characters to level 20, that's about 21 episodes till the end, which given you play two sets of characters reassures me we have a good year ahead of us with the characters we have come to love so much. I'm really worried that Sebastian is going to die trying to save Mouse as part of the final act. For now I want to go back and rewatch the episode relating the Kelly's character's secret being revealed. Thanks for all the content , you dudes and your team are the best.
Man, this is one of those times where I realise I'm not anywhere close to the base player... my group meets like once every 8 months on average, so if we had a session re-zero it would take up a valuable slot where we could actually PLAY, and plus, we kinda need a re-cap and re-evaluation every time we meet anyway I hope one day to have a regular group so I can put this video into practice, as it's really very good!
I had a great check-in session with my group after we finished a plot line with a lot of moral ambiguity. We agreed that we wanted more of a dungeon crawl as a break and the DM has been happily obliging. She has also been giving one player a couple of dreams/visions just to make the plot really clear.
What was said about Breaking Bad, you know how it's gonna end but how do we get there, that's SO important and actually really helped me put it into perspective.
Dnd day for my group is the second and fourth Sunday of the month. It works great, but granted the group consists on two people working at their own company and three students (one almost done with their master's thesis), and non of us have children. As the dm prepping and keeping up with my studies isn't always the easiest, but bith prepping and Actual playing, it's worth it
These aren't just great ideas for ttrpgs, but work for setting up any group (work committees, hiring people that will fill the role you need filled, etc. )
A scheduled night works best for our group. Every second friday is our session date. It let's the wives know as well so they can make their plans around that as well. Helps with child care so we don't need to get a sitter. For the most part we've had few nights outright cancelled and it was usually because the GM was the one who couldn't make it. Summer get a little more hard as people are away more on vacation but we have 4 players and can get by if 1 person misses the session.
My party is doing a different kind of session Re-zero next time we play.. Our party tpk'd & we're doing a session zero introducing our new characters into the story at level 7.
Now I know my phone listens to me. My campaign I DM for is starting back up after a long hiatus (close to a year). Other than saying yup let's do it I have not started any kind of prep work. Now this video shows up in my feed. 😂.
Great topic, and I agree for a long campaign it's useful to re-zero. By the way, I love the Duchess in the !!! Now I wish I had purchased it in my kickstarter pack, but didn't. :( On the other hand, the Xmas present of D&D Beyond was the best Xmas present I could have asked for.
man i would have needed a re-zero session when i joined late into a campaign that already had been going on for 6 years and i was completly new to the group. In particular about getting informed about a boundary a player had about making loud angry voices espicially if it spills over above table. If i knew this it could have been easier to avoid or remember in the heat of the moment so said player dont shut down completly as I try to regulate.
My DM just did a “seeeion” ReZero. More of a discord talk. He was getting burnt out and depressed from running Curse of Strahd. He wanted to switch to another setting, I forget what. But I was getting tired of this group as it wasn’t geling with my schedule and I was the odd one out when it came to scheduling. They’re all single with no kids. I’m married and have kids. I planned on leaving when the campaign ended, but I used this time to gracefully leave. And it’s been great ever since.
I have a web site that I have The Adventure so far. This can help both old and new players keep up to date to what has happened. It is done in day by day snip its so it is quick and easy to read
I'm so happy that you are bringing validity to my re:zero joke Jokes aside, I'm actually super grateful for this video because making a new beginning to my long delayed campaign has really caused me a lot of anxiety. So thank you for the advice
I really empathise with kelly’s impulse to think in a cinematic way about his character however I will say I think it's something that is worth unlearning. In my opinion it's a toxic trait to bring to the table as you are essentialy just making people watch your fan fiction. If you want to write a novel write a novel. Don't use your roleplay group to do it. I have found it makes my games so much more fun when you are open to finding out what happens and focusing on the interactions.
Basically did this a few days ago and found I was no longer a fit for the group. It sucks but it's better than forcing myself to keep playing in a group I found I was no longer clicking with.
A group didn't do this, but I politely excused myself by saying my schedule changed. It didn't, but I just wasn't feeling it. I think I can only handle one group at a time.

Session Zero/258 days
@Camo1177 that's how many days it's been since the last session right?
warms my heart that these are the top comments
I do smile every time they mention: "a session re:zero" in the video.
Session Zero: Re-coded
Talk about timing! I am literally doing this with my party later today after about a 9-month hiatus.
Good luck bro!
3 months here, needed this
@@jareddodson4299 thank you sir!

My thoughts exactly 😂
God damnit I'm reading the light novel right now. And main character is such a problematic character I hate him so much sometimes... but still going through this. 😆😅😇
Call of the Witch plays ominously in the background.
To be honest it’s a good campaign concept, although the concept is perhaps too low stakes for a light novel
@@NeuralNotes5in all earnestness- “problematic” and “isekai protagonist”- name a better combo!
I’m 52 years old, and I’ve been involved in DnD on a regular basis since 1979. I really enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work!
We do this every few months, sometimes we put the campaign on hiatus to do something different while we do some character work. Session Re-Zero: Electric Boogaloo 😎
In a Session Re-zero, if there was a player character who died prior to it, every player goes "Who is {character}?"
Ooooh.. sO mUch to unPacK from that video, great you will be taking the characters to level 20, that's about 21 episodes till the end, which given you play two sets of characters reassures me we have a good year ahead of us with the characters we have come to love so much. I'm really worried that Sebastian is going to die trying to save Mouse as part of the final act.
For now I want to go back and rewatch the episode relating the Kelly's character's secret being revealed.
Thanks for all the content , you dudes and your team are the best.
Man, this is one of those times where I realise I'm not anywhere close to the base player... my group meets like once every 8 months on average, so if we had a session re-zero it would take up a valuable slot where we could actually PLAY, and plus, we kinda need a re-cap and re-evaluation every time we meet anyway
I hope one day to have a regular group so I can put this video into practice, as it's really very good!
Shoutout to Czepeku, I've been using their maps for 2 years
Super advice, as always! Now wait for all of the comments about the rating submarine . . .
Just messaged my group how the weekend looks for a game. Scheduling right?
Off topic but is Kelly wearing an Angels and Airwaves shirt? One of my favorite bands of all time.
Yes I am!
Dnd day for my group is the second and fourth Sunday of the month. It works great, but granted the group consists on two people working at their own company and three students (one almost done with their master's thesis), and non of us have children. As the dm prepping and keeping up with my studies isn't always the easiest, but bith prepping and
Actual playing, it's worth it
These aren't just great ideas for ttrpgs, but work for setting up any group (work committees, hiring people that will fill the role you need filled, etc. )
Great video!
The Story So Far is a great band. Enjoy Kelly they're right up your alley if you don't know about them yet.
My party is doing a different kind of session Re-zero next time we play.. Our party tpk'd & we're doing a session zero introducing our new characters into the story at level 7.
I've been lied to, not even Puck would be this deceiving!
Good topic and timely for our party.
Now I know my phone listens to me. My campaign I DM for is starting back up after a long hiatus (close to a year). Other than saying yup let's do it I have not started any kind of prep work. Now this video shows up in my feed. 😂.
We do ours the the week after Christmas and call it the Cast Party!
How do you guys know exactly what I’m planning for next session? Stop peeking at the module! (FR thank you so much for this video)
This is an amazingly great idea! I am stealing it RIGHT NOW!
This video has so much advice beyond the title. It's criminal how many people won't watch this.
Thanks for the contnent guys
Damn the Sound is super crisp! Adobe speechenhancer?
I have a web site that I have The Adventure so far. This can help both old and new players keep up to date to what has happened. It is done in day by day snip its so it is quick and easy to read
Great advice as always!
Love the shirt🔥🔥🔥 and thanks for the video
Ratling Submarine returning in the upcoming Fate story Arc - Film at 11!!
Also, would it be possible to show everybody's character sheets, ability scores, HP maximums, AC and descriptions?
hey you guys should check out the nightfell"children of the moon kickstarter and that 5e dark fantasy setting
This video left me facepalmed with desperation on how difficult is to plan dnd.
Anyways, great video as always! Thanks
I love these types of videos!
Thank you for your videos.
I'm so happy that you are bringing validity to my re:zero joke
Jokes aside, I'm actually super grateful for this video because making a new beginning to my long delayed campaign has really caused me a lot of anxiety. So thank you for the advice
I definitely thought this would be about resetting the world after the players have either died, or just destroyed something really important
Great topic
Good suggestions, as usual 😊
I really empathise with kelly’s impulse to think in a cinematic way about his character however I will say I think it's something that is worth unlearning.
In my opinion it's a toxic trait to bring to the table as you are essentialy just making people watch your fan fiction.
If you want to write a novel write a novel.
Don't use your roleplay group to do it.
I have found it makes my games so much more fun when you are open to finding out what happens and focusing on the interactions.
Great video!
Oh, this video just made me have visions of Joe DMing these two. :)
I completely forgot about the ratling submarine
I like Monte's shirt.
Is there a written document that covers all these sections?
Is this meant to be a group session? did they get the questions beforehand and bring their answers to share or just one on one with dm?
This should be a group session for sure.
damn i cant believe it's a session where people die, and go back to a checkpoint in time
Session Re-Zero but you acknowledge that all absent players were eaten by a False Hydra and no one remembers them.
or eaten by a flying whale
They are on the ratling submarine
Hey guys, would you ever consider being guest stars on Critical Role? Just curious!!
That would be awesome
Happy ending:"No teeth? ;D" hahaha
19:02 IGNATIUS!!!
