I absolutely loved this story. It feels so much deeper than the regular Batman-Joker relationship because it’s about two parents coping with the loss of their child in opposite ways. And it’s nice to see Batman so brutal, except he can never bring himself to kill his wife, because to do so would cut off the last connection he has to his dead son.
While watching this video I realized this particular story of Flashpoint Batman and Joker would make a super good "gotcha" film. If Thomas is never referred to as such, only ever Mr. Wayne or Batman, and they keep Joker's appearance hidden or just out of frame, having intermittent flashbacks to the night of the murder of Bruce but never showing who it was that died until the third act. It would make for a really good movie.
Referred to as even just Batman. Because unless they decided to keep Thomas' face hidden, or went clean shaven, either his age or the mustache would give it away, unless they deliberately showed batman killing with guns. Could act as a good "shock value" switcheroo, with normal moviegoers thinking its an unfaithful batman, and letting real fans immediately know its flashpoint batman On a different note. Hot take: cast Michael keaton as thomas in that thworetical movie. Already have him casted as batman in both 89 and the new flash movie, so unless it is just straight up flashpoint batman in the flash movie, you have a precedent set to lure normal viewers into believeing it to be bruce
For real like Martha would of course take a reality where they died and Bruce lived. But if Bruce lived on to be even half as dark and horrible as Thomas Wayne Batman is, to any mother, it’s an unthinkable alternative. Like he’s basically saying “it’s this horrible reality, or literally the worst fate imaginable for your son, and I’m asking you to choose.” If I were in her shoes, I’d run away screaming from that information, too. She’s not well, canonically she sort of never has been. Her family has a long history of madness. That’s what makes this storyline work so well. Also it’s a heterosexual romantic retelling of the conflict between Bat and Clown, where the Batman reciprocates Joker’s love on some level instead of it being unrequited on every level. It makes it so so sad. Spoilers for flashpoint beyond or whatever, but I almost feel bad she didn’t actually just die there in that cave because having to live with the knowledge that one of the universal constants is supposed to be that Bruce Wayne becomes Batman, as she eventually does, is like one of the worst fictional burdens to put on any one human person’s psyche in any alternate reality. Just like it’s one of the worst and cruelest fictional burdens to put on Bruce Wayne Batman’s psyche that in the Flashpoint timeline, his father becomes an unrecognizable, warped, killer Batman and HIS MOTHER BECOMES THE JOKER. 10/10 concept
The way Martha reacted to Thomas telling her that Bruce wouldn’t become a doctor, that was hard to watch. A mother learning that her son would fall down the same path as her husband, but not knowing her son would succeed both his parents, and be better as they hope. That is heartbreaking.
Bruce Batman doesn't kill the Joker because of a promise. Thomas doesn't kill the Joker because that's his wife. So similar yet so different, I love it.
"All it takes is one bad day" Literally, that's all it took for Thomas and Martha. And you're right, even when Batman kills, he and the Joker keep playing their sadistic game of theirs, without any of them killing the other, just for different reasons.
I just think it’s interesting how both Bat(men? man’s?) had totally opposite reactions to the same trauma. The first, surrounded himself with a new family, after his own was completely lost. The second isolated himself completely after his family was ripped apart.
I was hoping that Martha Wayne Joker would have been expanded upon. I believe that it was a bad idea to kill her. I would say somehow bring her to the main universe and commit murders in Gotham. I would love to see the reaction of both Batman and the Joker. I believe once the original Joker discovered her Identity he would go out of his way to help her kill more people to screw with Batman's head.

I strongly agree. There are decades of excellent stories that haven't been used, including some unusual ones.
