My father in law always said “gas” like this. My wife and I never understood why but it was funny. We randomly saw the movie and were dying laughing at this scene. We are in our 40’s now so you can imagine how many times we’ve heard “gas”.
Xmastime 1984 was when this came out and I recognized Karen Allen right off the bat as Marion from Raiders of the lost ark three years before. Two of the cast members from Herbie Goes Bananas(summer 1980) are in this as well-Richard Jaeckel and Charles Martin Smith.
Actually it was Nov. 10, 2002 when it was hit by a tornado. I live 5 miles from this spot. The damage was so bad that they had to tear the rest of it down and they never rebuilt. The lot remains empty to this day. 3/12/2021
I grew up around that area, about 4 miles away. Yes it was hit by a tornado and the owners never rebuilt to this day it is empty. My mom and dad worked at that gas station for a while so did my Aunt.

that was a great scene, it's one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen in a movie, it was so gracefully acted out and the soundtrack was perfect :)
back then $1 went a lot further than it does these days, and probably even more in 2012, when you wrote this comment, than now. lol So it's probably equivalent to 2.50 per gallon or some such, in 84. Currently in 2021, it's about 3.70 here in my part of Washington state.
Upon seeing this again I just noticed something I failed to notice before-this is an Amoco gas station; I forgot about those, and Arco filling stations as well. Gone are the days of both of those babies, that’s for sure.

I definitely believe in aliens and I truly feel this is how they would view us if visited earth. It's a beautiful scenario because I'd like to believe that there are peaceful aliens.

Jenny:"It's when a person has to...Ah, to tell with it, this one's too difficult and too embarrassing. You'll have to figure it out yourself." And just what he's thinking when he sees her enter the ladies' room:"I know how I can figure it out, I'll go in with her and she can show me." Jenny, as she escorts him out:"Sorry, you can't come in here." Starman:"Why not? Jenny:(points to the sign on the door):"Women, that's ME." Takes him over to the men's room and shows him the sign on THAT door:"Men-that's YOU."

This Gas Station was in Manchester Tennessee off I24 at exit 105. It was destroyed in 2001 when a Tornado hit it.
