I can sympathize. After having a mono, lo-fi VHS VCR for four years, we got our first stereo, hi-fi VCR for Christmas 1994. For more than four years, I used it to record from television and was surprised that there seemed to be no stereo separation in the transmissions. Then I finally changed the setting so that stereo transmissions were presented in stereo. After more than four years' watching and recording. 😒
I don’t remember any of this. It was during the decade I out getting pi$$ed every night. It’s like seeing new stuff for the first time. There’s a lot to be said about a misspent youth.😅
I actually had just such a conversation with my teacher, closer to 40 years ago. I said I thought that computers were about to change how everyone lived, even replace books and she said "don't be so ridiculous, you'll never be able to take a computer into the toilet with you to read a book" - the class laughed at me. Not that I'm holding a grudge or anything Mrs Cheruzzi, but you were wrong and I was right 😂
Indeed. When we did maths we would ask why learn it when you can use a calculator and they said you won't always have a calculator with you.... we've come a long way but I guess nobody really knew the negative effects of an always connected world.

I'm fortunate to be an age where I still got to see the trailing end of this type of programme making, and the fact that I no longer watch broadcast television says all that you need to know about TV nowadays. Same here. I never made a conscious decision to stop watching broadcast TV, I just watched it less and less and eventually got rid of my TV. Sometimes I do watch a bit, like on the cross trainer at the gym, but after half an hour I realise how crap it was and turn it off.
Why wouldn't it? It's how the sound was originally recorded, aside from a minor degradation in quality when it was rendered for youtube, it is still as per the original.

I listened to this today April 2017 and still went "WOW" when the 3d stereo was turned on. I love gadgets. Even from the 80's/90's. :)

The reporter said "eventually 8 million people a year will be using that airport" it's actually over 27 million a year now. I'm not exactly sure why I spent time looking that up.
I remember when this was on live, and we didn't have a NICAM receiver at the time. So we recorded it on VHS and on a cassette from the radio broadcast too - then I had fun trying to sync it up again on playback lol

The internet has allowed for information to arrive more quickly, and while that is a good thing, various factors have led viewers to get used to information coming in at a high rate, and so also taking a short time to be delivered. Unwittingly, the attention spans of many viewers ended up decreasing. 2. How do you know that there weren't any similar shows at the time, that were weaker in those regards? 3. Well I was there at the time and this was how Tv of that era, in the Uk was presented. It started to change when Channel 4 came along, most notably with the show Network 7, which would equate roughly with todays speed & style of delivery. This is a wider issue, where even supposedly thoughtful shows like Newsnight on Bbc2 & You & Yours on Radio 4, try to fit too many people in during interview spots, so in a piece with 3 interviewees in the studio, each person may only get to speak for a short time twice, I've even seen less than that - what's the point!!
I'm not so sure about that. If you put nostalgia aside and compare TW to the contemporary equivalent: BBC's 'Click', I think the standard of journalism in the latter is definitely on par if not better, and more in-depth. Watching this reminded of a piece Click broadcasted last year on binaural sound complete with demos as in this segment. It's quite an interesting comparison, available on iplayer (Click 23/04/2016) if you're inclined to check it out.
kemika Yes Click is probably the nearest to this that we have now, but it's still a pale comparison; and when it does serious stuff it's just boring, which TW never was!
Watching it via the 'smart' TV and momentarily forgot the sound was through the HiFi speakers until they played the 3D-Stereo and was taken aback! Worked quite well, nice sound. There was a lot of good content in this episode - thanks for uploading, VHS Video vault :-)
Those were the days when we went to the moon 7 times, landing men 6 times and all returning safely despite some horrendous problems. Can’t do that anymore.
The audio wide is just reverb and echo, and quickly moving left and right. Now normal specs of stereo is Left channel is full mono (left + right) with right being mono2. Then became mono dual channel L+R (stereo). Timing panning is basically how Dolby and THX works, then carrier frequencies to tell decoder which command for pass thrus such as speaker centre. Only DTS allowed true 5 mono channels.
I had the full set up and now in 2024 I have full surround sound with 9 speakers.. I honestly can remember that the song winter in July blew my mind when I heard it coming from behind…
This still holds up well today! I'm watching/listening to this on a half decent sound system in 2023 and I'm very impressed! No doubt modern audio processors help.
Always watched Tomorrow's world with my dad on a Thursday night, this was a good edition with the 3D stereo demo, this didn't come to anything as Dolby surround sound systems came along soon after.
This is basically how the 2.1 channel Soundbar, Smartphone and Headphone version of Dolby Atmos works. In fact I watched this using my cheapass $200 Atmos soundbar. Worked well.
I think the British Steel Industry had been well and truly screwed by the unions long before that. At that point it made practically no money, and existed solely to provide jobs to union members. Pretty much the same story with all our heavy industry. I'm not so sure where coal would fit into our modern green economy either. Some people prattled-on about 'clean coal', but once Trump started spouting the same shit, then we realised that was bullshit too.
I remeber watching this episode when it came out. I had no stereo in the living room, and my sister was doing homework in the dining room, so i had to improvise - i used my Sony walkman, which had a radio, and a set of amplified, battery powered, portable stereo speakers, placed 6ft apart as they advised the week before. Unfortunately the radio reception was not great in the room, especially because the walkman relied on the headphone cable's ground as its antenna, which didnt work so well on the speakers as it would have with the headphones.
It's funny, listening to this through my headphones, the wide stereo on the theme music sounds really good but as I recall, when stereo and hifi systems first started adding a 'Wide' button, it usually sounded naff. it probably didn't help that I love funk / house music, and the 'wide' function just seemed to destroy the bass punch. It also made the music sound weird, like it was too wide, with nothing left in the middle! I think this was something that worked well with expensive studio and mixing equipment, but not on an off-the-shelf budget hifi set up.
The wide stereo button was similar to this, but was trying to do things after the mastering. It didn't work particularly well on any equipment. To work properly, the sound has to be "widened" when the recording is mastered (as per the demonstration)
I have a set of Kenwood speakers from 2000 that have this feature. The hi fi system that it came with hasn't survived unfortunately but the the speakers still sound fantastic. The 3D feature really works, thought it would just turn out to be a gimick at the time they were purchased but was pleasantly surprised.
Im glad i saw this. This technology is in most digital audio workstations(daw) these days. I can assume that the majority of daw users may not know how it works though.
Bob Carver did this a decade earlier with his "sonic holography" circuit built into many of his amplifiers. Same principle of extracting and time shifting out of phase information through two speakers. It works to some degree but does not create the 3D illusion as effectively as multichannel systems.
(6:35) - "...eventually, up to eight million people a year should be using Stansted..." Wow, that many? In 2017 Stansted handled 24 million passengers!
"We'll see how long it takes for the technology to be picked up". Yeah, still not generally used by the music industry in 2020, unfortunately. (Though, some of these techniques are used for positional audio in games and VR, so it didn't die off entirely - but it's kind of taken until now, and the need for immersion in VR, to start getting back to this again. Mind you, thinking about it, VR itself was similar. There was a big push for it in the '90s, but it was a bit crap, so died off. Then hardware got good enough to do it justice more recently and VR's back in action again.) p.s. I have a bone to pick with Tomorrow's World, as they kept talking about all these awesome things happening by 2020. They never mentioned any global virus or lockdowns.

3D stereo just sounded like normal stereo except the music was produced/mixed with proper panning and separation of the instruments... which is just normal stereo done well, lol.
Deathbrewer Actually it isn't, RSS actually was a real thing. And it would sound wider than normal stereo because normal stereo has a sync field of 90 degrees. RSS used phased sound array technology, and this is completely unlike a normal stereo mixing technique.
Lol 3D sound. I remember the TVs had crappy Nicam digital sound as a sales gimmick and sounded all over the place. Volume up volume down all the time. I remember them days. I also remember watching this and switching on my dads hi fi to hear this 3D sound. The old shitty days. Tomorrow's world was great in its day though.......
mark smith Near Instantaneous Compound Audio Multiplex, actually worked amazing on my stereo system at home and enjoyed watching TV back in the 80s and 90s using NICAM. I always remember it's sounding superb, but then again I had a quite expensive stereo system connected to my VCR.
Clint Tapper That’s what we did too... Mono TV but NICAM VCR connected to the hifi system. Forgot the TV had its own speakers after a while, and the NICAM stereo really was excellent. We were in one of the first areas to get NICAM (Emley Moor) and it really made a big difference to the viewing experience.

Watching & listening to snooker from the crucible in the early nineties when I first got the high-end Sony nicam vcr hooked up to the stereo was jaw dropping. Subtle coughing from left to right, the squeak of chalk on cue tip, every foot step of the players, the rumbling of the air-handling equipment & the stunning sound of hendry smashing the cue ball from the top right of the table into a red mid low table into the left lower pocket! Brilliant stuff!
Watched this in 2022 on a stereo phone and it sounds bloody good. There were some good 3d albums made eg Orbital, Deep Forest using BASE or RSS which was ok. Binaural is much better now.
Well done for recording and uploading this program in stereo letting us hear the 3d stereo experiment. It seemed to work well, I wonder what happened to this technology.
Digital sound processing was all the rage in the 1990s and the early 2000s. My 2011 Panasonic shelf system has three separate buttons on the remote to select different effects. My 2006 portable CD player has it too. Wide stereo works well for simpler music with fewer instruments, it works great for synth music. But rock with tons of drums turns into horrible mush. Before DSPs, equalizers were very popular. Now it seems, if you care about the audio quality at all, you would want it as clean and as close to the original setting as possible, no processing. Now people care for Hi-Res. And many use just a single BT speaker, oh horror!
Does the company 'Integral Vision Ltd.' still exist or did it go the way of most UK companies with good ideas & expertise - either acquired by a large overseas company or couldn't manage to expand so just folded?

It's just a stereo signal, if you have two speakers it should work. The only reason this wouldn't work is if you were using a mono speaker.

Pink Floyd did it on The Final Cut in 1983 using Holophonics. The sound of the men playing snooker in the pub is particularly impressive.

the wide button was mide side filtering but this is using pitch, time and reverb to place instruments. in a stereo field.

Bob Carver did this a decade earlier with his "sonic holography" circuit built into many of his amplifiers. Same principle of extracting and time shifting out of phase information through two speakers. It works to some degree but does not create the 3D illusion as effectively as multichannel systems.

Yep, and due to Brexit, only two will use it in 2020 due to price of tickets and 9 days to get thru customs.

Yeah, still not generally used by the music industry in 2020, unfortunately.
(Though, some of these techniques are used for positional audio in games and VR, so it didn't die off entirely - but it's kind of taken until now, and the need for immersion in VR, to start getting back to this again. Mind you, thinking about it, VR itself was similar. There was a big push for it in the '90s, but it was a bit crap, so died off. Then hardware got good enough to do it justice more recently and VR's back in action again.)
p.s. I have a bone to pick with Tomorrow's World, as they kept talking about all these awesome things happening by 2020. They never mentioned any global virus or lockdowns.

3D stereo just sounded like normal stereo except the music was produced/mixed with proper panning and separation of the instruments... which is just normal stereo done well, lol.
Deathbrewer Actually it isn't, RSS actually was a real thing. And it would sound wider than normal stereo because normal stereo has a sync field of 90 degrees.
RSS used phased sound array technology, and this is completely unlike a normal stereo mixing technique.

Lol 3D sound. I remember the TVs had crappy Nicam digital sound as a sales gimmick and sounded all over the place. Volume up volume down all the time. I remember them days. I also remember watching this and switching on my dads hi fi to hear this 3D sound. The old shitty days. Tomorrow's world was great in its day though.......
mark smith Near Instantaneous Compound Audio Multiplex, actually worked amazing on my stereo system at home and enjoyed watching TV back in the 80s and 90s using NICAM.
I always remember it's sounding superb, but then again I had a quite expensive stereo system connected to my VCR.
Clint Tapper That’s what we did too... Mono TV but NICAM VCR connected to the hifi system. Forgot the TV had its own speakers after a while, and the NICAM stereo really was excellent. We were in one of the first areas to get NICAM (Emley Moor) and it really made a big difference to the viewing experience.

Same here, I thought nicam sounded spot on, far better than anything broadcast in stereo on sky or digital terrestrial these days, or are my ears getting old?
Watching & listening to snooker from the crucible in the early nineties when I first got the high-end Sony nicam vcr hooked up to the stereo was jaw dropping.
Subtle coughing from left to right, the squeak of chalk on cue tip, every foot step of the players, the rumbling of the air-handling equipment & the stunning sound of hendry smashing the cue ball from the top right of the table into a red mid low table into the left lower pocket!

Watched this in 2022 on a stereo phone and it sounds bloody good. There were some good 3d albums made eg Orbital, Deep Forest using BASE or RSS which was ok. Binaural is much better now.

Digital sound processing was all the rage in the 1990s and the early 2000s. My 2011 Panasonic shelf system has three separate buttons on the remote to select different effects. My 2006 portable CD player has it too. Wide stereo works well for simpler music with fewer instruments, it works great for synth music. But rock with tons of drums turns into horrible mush. Before DSPs, equalizers were very popular. Now it seems, if you care about the audio quality at all, you would want it as clean and as close to the original setting as possible, no processing. Now people care for Hi-Res. And many use just a single BT speaker, oh horror!

It was recorded on a Nicam Stereo VCR, and the sound here comes straight from that.
