I would recommend going for the CPA over EA if your an accountant, simply for marketability. True or not, people know what a CPA is and will always think in their heads that the CPA is better. In reality it depends (diaper clause; iron rule of accounting), but we are in the business of marketing our skills and abilities, and with the CPA, the work has essentially been done for you.

In order to become a CPA you need a bachelor degree and tons of accounting classes, and passing a very grueling the CPA exam. You can become an EA with a HS diploma and passing all the sections of the EA exam

In regards to what you said about EAs needing to work with the IRS for 5 years, that's a bit misleading. In order to become a licenced EA, you can go about it two ways: The first is working for the IRS for five years in a specific capacity, the second is by passing all three parts of the Special Enrollment Examination (SEE exam). The three sections are: Individual taxation, Business taxation, and Representation. Like you, I only just heard about it...this past summer. Having looked into it, it seems like a good deal if you're not interested in doing 150 credit hours + one year of auditing + passing the four part CPA exam. I'm hoping to start taking the exams after tax season ends in April!

Good info. I will add that CPAs and attorneys also have rights to represent clients before the IRS.

Can’t a CPA appear for audits?

    • @Regulus3333

Yes. A Cpa and lawyer can appear. Ea is just passing an irs test. Hes not stating real truth here. Cpa is 4 plus years of hard schooling and one of the most difficult tests on earth as well as incredibly rigorous standards to meet.

Theres no "5 year term" for EAs. You can become an EA as a high school dropout taking a test in a weekend. A CPA requires FIVE years of college (thats usually a masters) and a year working under an experienced CPA with a letter of recommendation after passing the most difficult professional exam there is. You are an utter clown if you think an EA is better suited to represent anyone. Its the difference between a lifeguard and a doctor. Hope you don't have anything life threatening.

Well said brother. It's funny how some people can compare the two licenses as if they are similar. They are not. Lol.
