Volvo S60 Headlight Assembly Replacement - DIY in 10 Minutes!

  • ►We're here with Jay VanGorden again to show you how to remove and install the headlamp assembly on your P2 Volvo. There are many reasons why replacing a headlamp assembly in your Volvo S60 can be necessary. The headlamp assembly on a P2 Volvo S60 can be quite trouble-some. The earlier model years used a glass lens and the later years used a plastic alternative. The earlier glass lenses tend to pit and crack over time while the later plastic versions tend to haze up. Both versions have also been known to spring a condensation leak due to the seal.
    In the case of oxidation, there are several products on the market that remove the oxidation similarly to removing oxidation from car paint. Additionally there are some who have successfully used toothpaste to remove headlight oxidation as well (yes, you read that right). If you need new headlights, you may want to consider changing them in pairs for even lighting performance.

    This process is slightly different for the 2005 - 2009 S60s. They use 8 mm in place of some of the 10 mm bolts in this video and you have to remove the T5 boot behind the wheel lining.

      Mine also had 1 extra push pin on each side. It was on the bottom edge of the bumper closest to the wheels. The way you would tell is that if you're trying to take off your bumper, it would be holding on from the bottom. It's similar to the push pins on the top of the bumper.

    Thank you Jay, exactly what I was looking for.
    3:30 You can apply this to other P2 chassis models like S60 2001-2009, V70 2001-2007, XC70 2003-2007, and the S80 1999-2006.

    If you are only doing one side(deer hit smashed one, for example), you don't have to take the bumper off. remove the top clips, pop the strip off in the front, remove the 2 mounting bolts for that side, the one screw in the wheel well, and the 4 bolts that hold the headlight in. Requires a little more hand-work to get to some stuff, but if you are working alone, and don't have a lift, it makes it easier.

    Thanx 4 this video! Used it to change out my 2007 S60 lights. A few small differences, at least for us with the 2007 (at least ours, assuming no changes have been made since the car was new):
    - Only 1 screw (each side) holds the bumper onto the wheelwell, and that's a Phillips. Don't waste time trying to separate the wheel liner from the front liner - not needed.
    - Entire bumper/grill assembly is held on only by those 2 screws and the 5 plastic pins on top of the radiator - that's it. Careful once undoing those two areas.
    - You DO NOT have to take off the little strip on each side of the bumper. There is no access to a headlight bolt there. Once you remove the entire grill, the front headlight bolt is right there (lower inside corner of each light). Leave the little strips on.
    Other than that I think it's about exactly what's in the video. One more thing, it's possible that your headlights might aim a little off when installed. If so, there is a little hex nut on top of the assembly/radiator area. This is what you twist to position the light up/down (you don't have to go into a dealer and pay $50+ to aim your lights - it's easy (hopefully it works for you).
    Appreciate the efficient, to-the-point aspects of these videos, thanks!

    PLEASE HELP
    Hi, I own a Volvo S60 2006. I have watched a lot of your videos to fix my vehicle. Thanks to you guys all fixes have been made easier. The car is now driving successfully but! For some odd reason the last thing I had to do was replace one of my headlamps. The low beam did not work on the prior headlamp so I replaced the bulb and it still didn’t work. So I bought a whole new headlamp thinking that as soon as I installed it the light would turn on but it hasn’t. I have researched all day trying to find this same problem but I have yet to find a solution. I checked the fuses and they are fine the headlamp as well as all the bulbs are fine but I can not get the low beam light to cut on. Maybe it’s the wiring? Not the wiring connected to the bulb itself because that’s brand new but maybe the wiring connecting to the fuse box. I really don’t know what to do as of now. Do you have any ideas what it may be or what I should do? Please help.

    At $250-$400 each, you may as well try taking them out/leaving them in and detailing them with one of the many sanding/polishing methods and adding a new protective layer before you spend much more (especially on the plastic lens units where you replace the entire thing!).

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's also an option if the lens isn't heavily pitted or cracked. There's many cost effective headlight restoration kits available under $30.

Bought new bulb and pigtail connector but will probably have to remove the headlight housing to have enough room to see and be able to splice in new connector. What a pain in the ass.

    • @jacklhaynes

      I made the repair with a new pigtail; butt spliced the wires; works like new. Took all of 10 minutes. Got lucky getting the bulb back in the socket. Usually takes a few curse words and several tries on the bulb.
      Also had to adjust headlights, but again really easy.
      Any questions let me know.
      Good luck.

    Is this process the same as S60R version or slightly different? And would a regular S60 healight assembly work just as well on the S60R version?

    Hi. You did it great. There is no way on Earth I could ever possibly do a front end disassembly of my car because the inside of the headlight is covered with scale. This is purposely done by Volvo to make it impossible to avoid paying a Volvo mechanic to change this. YOU are fantastic, but Volvo is devious for making the headlights inaccessible. THE WORST IS THE SERVICE LIGHT GOING OFF AT PRESET MILE MARKERS. WHAT A RACQUET! Criminal! Whoever invented that bit of bald faced extortion is going straight to hell when they die. PLUS, VOLVO SUNROOFS LEAK AND THEY KNOW IT, THEY JUST DONT WANTTO FIX IT! THEY KNOW THEY SHOULD BE RECALLED AND WEASELED THERE WAY OUT OF IT. CROOKS! PLUS, changing a cabin air filter should not require a PhD from MIT. EVERYTHING VOLVO DOES TO MAKE THEIR CARS SO DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN WILL BE THE REASON THEY GO OUTOF BUSINESS. IF I HAD A CHOICE RIGHT NOW ID GET RID OF THIS MONEY PIT. IF YOU HAVE TIME, TOOLS AND MONEY THATS AWESOME. YOU ARE IN THE ONE PERCENT. I TELL ANYONE I KNOW AT EVERY APPROPRIATE OCCASION TO NEVER BUY A VOLVO. AN S60 IS NOT A LUXURY CAR, BUT THEY CHARGE SO MUCH TO MAINTAIN IT, THEY MAY AS WELL GET A BENTLEY. YOU KNOW WHAT? SCREW VOLVO, I HAVE HAD IT WITH YOUR GREED AND EXTORTION, YOUR PURPOSEFUL AGGRAVATION AND DEVIOUS BUSINESS PRACTICE. I AM VOLV-OVER YOUR BULLSHIT! When you have to GO ONLINE TO STUDY HOW TO CHANGE THE BATTERY OF YOUR KEYFOB, YOU KNOW YOU HAVE ONE GIANT TURD OF A CAR IN YOUR DRIVEWAY!

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there's a break somewhere in the wire you'll need to replace it. You'll also want to check the electrical connector to clean out any dirt and debris.
