- These are Meyers Manx dune buggies, meeting up in Big Bear in July 2014 for the 50th anniversary of Bruce Meyers inventing his original Meyers Manx dune buggy. As you can see, people still love these dune buggies now as much as they did 50 years ago. Bruce Meyers was at the 50th anniversary event to meet all the people and autograph their classic Meyers Manx dune buggies. These are great little classic cars. I want a classic dune buggy now.

Mae Father brought home 45 years ago, a beautiful yellow dune buggie, I’m not sure if it was a Mayer’s Manx, but it was identical to the original ones.
We lived in a big city call Guadalajara, Jalisco Mexico, we still do. I remember learning how to drive and n it, I would finish my lunch as fast as I could and then do my homework, and then I was allowed to jump into the car and pretend that I was in a race… I would spend hours and hours in that car… such wonderful memories…how I wish I could have one now…

You're welcome. I was up in Big Bear riding mountain bikes, and crashed and fractured some ribs, and was walking around town because I was too hurt to ride anymore, and I came across the Meyers Manx rally in the parking lot, and was really happy to see so many neat little dune buggies in one place.
I had one in 1970. I was 19 my wife and I dated in it. I loved it and have always regretted not keeping it. It was built on a 1956 VW chassis and only had 36HP. We had so much fun. I got drafted in 1971 and with a wife and then a baby on the way it was just not practical to keep. My uncle who lives in Ventura, CA started building it. I helped him over the summer then bought it and finished building. I added a top with side curtains. Living on the Mojave desert about 60 miles from Big Bear was so awesome.
Terry Ragsdale Great memories! You can still find these for sale if you want to get one now. There were some at the show for 5 or 6 thousand dollars.

I just bought one 5/29/15 from my neighbor, it has been in his garage for about over 30+ yrs,it was covered in dust, it is an original 1966 Meyers Manx, Vw engine 1500 CC i guess?, 2 carbs, snaky exhaust pipes, Really nice AQUA paint job 10 yrs ago, huge reversed rims and big knobby tires,Chrome roll bar, nice seats, no cracks in the body at all, perfect windshield, I couldn't pass it up for a thousand dollar$, I think the grandkids will love riding in it soon. Can't wait to get working on it. Looks like alot of fun after watching all these videos, would like to get the correct badges for it, i heard Mr. Meyers will give them to you? Have a great day!
David Hatchel That's a bargain! Have fun with it! Look around on the internet for forums where Meyers Manx people share ideas and arrange meetups. I was just walking by when they had their rally at Big Bear, so I don't know a lot about these classic cars, other than that they look like fun and I want one.
***** I would like to get chrome exhaust pipes for it, it has 2 carbs so some won't fit it, there is a car show around here soon, buggies and bruce meyers will be there i'm told, so i'll go meet him.
The final buggy, Kermit, is mine. We drove him all the way from Illinois to Big Bear for the party in July. Cool video! BTW, the two handles are turning brakes to help you steer better on dirt.
Cool! Yours was my favorite. I think we were staying at the same hotel, the one with the pool filled with dirt and no heat or air conditioning. That place is legendary for being the worst hotel in Big Bear, and maybe California, but the price is right. I'm glad you and the other dune buggy guys found my video. Those are neat little cars.

That place was a serious roachmotel! If I had known how bad it was going to be, I would have moved! Yeah, the pool was filled with dirt and the Jacuzzi had a tree growing in it! Not to mention the shower was smaller than one in an RV! Definitely the worst one we stayed at during our entire trip!
Glad you found the Manx Club Big Bear event! It happens every year around that time in Big Bear. This year was the 50th Anniversary of the Meyers Manx dune buggy, and there were nearly 300 buggies there! We were part of a group that came from the East Coast just for the event.

Arizona RE They're awesome! I accidentally stumbled across this meetup in Big Bear when I went mountain biking. I was cutting across the parking lot from my hotel to find a restaurant, and I noticed all the cars in the parking lot were the same, and they were the coolest cars I'd ever seen.
I have a bright yellow one original. One with antique tags here in Tennessee

Indeed! I am glad people are taking care of these and keeping them on the road. They are classics.
The levers near the shift lever are for the rear brakes. On loose ground or sand the front tires don't always get enough bite to turn well, so the driver applies a little brake to the rear wheel to help. Right lever helps turn right, left lever helps turn left.

The double handles are Dual Turning Hand Brakes. So you can make closed turns they activate left and right.

the additional lever(s) is a turning brake
levers are for differential braking, left and right side, no ratcheting locking, just hang hard right on the wheel and give the right handle a tug and you've made a dramatic right hand turn. kinda like a scalded rat. because you shorten the frame 14 1/4 inches you lessen the ability for a rollover and corner as flat as your fear level.

Just to let you know the Tow'd style car is street legal and the extra handles are steering brakes I know because mine is the Tiger Tow'd one you looked at thanks for the video
Cool. I was in Big Bear to do some mountain biking and accidentally found your dune buggy rally. Those things look like a lot of fun.
I forget to mention those levers are so you can lock one rear wheel or another [to steer in a turn [parking brake but control of left/right rear wheels] Normal VW pull lever locks both rear wheels

***** Yep, my father built one many years ago, and I rode around in it as a kid in the '80s. I loved that car, and remember the individual rear brake levers. Ridiculous fun. :D
So Cool! I had a "Real Orig Manx"! My friend back in the mid 70's Traded Bruce Meyers a 1954 Chevy Woodie wagon for a Meyers "Tow"d" Later,He sold it to my father in law. One day we checked the Vin..000000001! My father in law approached me and said "Do You want Grannys 1959 Plymouth [with 40k orig miles] or the Tow"d. I chose the the Plymouth.[ I still had the Manx at the time] Uhh.. If I had taken the the Tow"d It might be worth today 100k . Being the first one...

I dont think those levers lock up the rear wheels. My big brother had one of these when I was a kid, And those are the heater levers, like on a bug. I could be wrong though, let me know, as it would be the first time "o) Also, you haul master vid is on adv rider in the scooter section!
Some of the dune buggies had 2 levers and others just had a regular parking brake. The lever for each wheel makes sense off road, in a 2 wheel drive vehicle without positraction. If one wheel gets into the mud and spins, put a brake on it, and the other wheel will bet traction, I am glad people are sharing my Haul Master video. It is a dangerous product that no one should buy.

They are called cutting brakes. One for left rear, one for right rear. They help you make very sharp corners in the sand & loose dirt.
Looks the same as in GTA V :D
