So I guess you saw dr wily video on how he didn’t like the story ether but Luke where have you been man I getting kind of worried about you man you and sully
I was personally hoping for a direct prequel to the game, link was shown to have been a royal badass before the game takes place, so I was really hoping for a past stand type game as well that is complimentary to the original game that makes the story of the original hit a lot harder because you have a drive to beat Gannon besides what little story was in botw
@ItsHalo Same here.... And respect to you bro, halo’s fukin awesome... It kinda sucks that that AoC wasn’t actually breath of the wild’s prequel, it would’ve been so awesome if it was... Oh and this is unrelated but, I can’t wait for halo infinite!
@@LeopoldLitchenstein that's a fair enough point but eventually someone will bring up that that was a misspelling, I don't actually care I was just yanking his chain
I had a blast with this game. I liked the story and the new Champions coming through. I even like this version of Ganon. He’s more fun to fight. The thing that killed this one was it being advertised as a prequel when it’s really… “a what could’ve happened. “ Had Nintendo had rolled with the ending as we already knew it, this could’ve been a better hit. I wonder what the DLC will bring?
@@Fermin-hw5pd Here's the thing, Nintendo marketed it as a prequel to BoTW, which it was on a technical level, but they never marketed it as canon to BoTW.
I think what would've worked best would've been having the main story be just a prequel and then having all the time traveling stuff as a big post game quest "what if" scenario.
I really have no idea what they were thinking with this story tbh. I was expecting a Star Wars Revenge of the Sith type of story when we know exactly that the characters are going to loose but you don’t want them to. Yet we got this Rise of Skywalker goodie friendship power BS. WHY! They said they wanted BOTW to be a single timeline and then this happens.
This story should have been the DLC to the true prequel... they could have had us all believe we had won until a blood moon swerve leading to the evacuation sequence. That would have made for a dramatic and emotional story. Then we would feel invested.
For me the character who got it worse was Revali, in his diary in the second dlc it showed how he would push himself to do better so he could prove himself to everyone, It also explains why he acted the way he did to link. It gave him more depth But in age of calamity he comes across as a egotistical asshole that just hates link for no reason, in the first cutscene he and link have he acts hostile towards him for no reason, and it continues throughout the game
Nah he still hates Link for the same reason being because he is jealous of him and worried that Link may surpass him. Yeah because he already sees that Link is very skilled and could be a rival for him.
@@Zucker1210 Yes as even without the Master Swrod he saw how skilled Link is throughout the level and put his skills to the test, so him being jealous does make senne
@@Jdudec367 no it's just that they couldn't bother putting more effort into the story and just took what tiny bit of story botw had and just did that for the ENTIRE game
They still could have used Astor just make him the fortune teller and have him go after Link and Zelda under Ganon's orders have link fight him right before they reached fort hatano making it a contributing factor.
Eiji Aonuma has some explaining to do about this. I always thought it was gonna be a prequel. But in the second dlc pack for age of calamity, there will be new story content.
@Sunset's Channel Even though Nintendo says it's canon... Then again, they've done timeline splits before so... I guess they're doing it again? Makes you wonder why though.
Honestly I agree, the way Nintendo advertised this was so wrong, this was supposed to be a story of lost, tragedy, and despair, not some kind of fanfic that retcons everything built up, the time travel also annoyed me. I paid 79 dollars for something that I now don’t need anymore, and if this was canon then the entire timeline would be messed up, confusing, and just bs. I feel no need for this game anymore actually, if u like it that’s fine I respect that, but it isn’t for me
I’ve never wanted characters that I liked to die so badly until I finished this game. As much as I like Age of Calamity, I can’t say I’m not disappointed just thinking about what we could have gotten
@@stefrockmartel Well yeah, because that's how the story of the calamity went as told in BotW. The whole premise of BotW is that you wake up as the sole surviving champion in an unfamiliar world after something catastrophic went down, and spend the game travelling around piecing together the events of 100 years ago - who Link was and how he ended up in this situation. A lot of us would've loved to see that story expanded upon with a bittersweet and hopeful ending that leads into BotW. Plus there's no reason the champions couldn't just become playable again for fun in the post game anyway if we wanted to continue to play as them and level them up - it's not like the progress would be lost forever.
@@timmy3441 I mean…it turns out exactly like it would have. The calamity still happened and the champions did almost die…I mean if they did die what does that change? We already know what happens. Is watching their last words what people wanted? Literally everything happened just as expected. Only minor difference is Terrako.
@@JickAudio I've gotta say, that's a bit of a weird take. What would it have changed? Everything! The final acts of the game's story would have gone down a completely different path and would've ended in a way that was *satisfying* and tied in to BotW. Seeing Zelda's last run to the castle alone, to face Ganon after awakening her powers *just a little too late*, with her father and almost everyone she knows dead, knowing she's the last hope for Hyrule and for Link's survival, would've made for a very emotionally powerful moment. I would have loved to see Zelda stand on the bridge outside the castle sanctum and stand against swirling dark energy Ganon as the final boss fight, I think it would've made for an amazing climax to the story. It would've been great to see more context around certain memories and what happened before & after the moments we saw in BotW. To see how they might have depicted the final moments before and during Link's collapse, with the additional context of seeing how Link and Zelda spent an exhausting day fleeing south from the castle, taking small victories along the way, helping escort surviving soldiers to Fort Hateno before Link was finally overwhelmed. I wanted to see the mission where a party of Sheikah has to transport Link's body to the Shrine of Resurrection, as well as the final moments where Purah seals him in the chamber and closes the door. I wanted to see the spirit of King Rhoam set up on the Plateau to await the day Link wakes up, a nice hopeful moment before the credits roll. Another problem is that so much changed in the mid-game with things like Purah giving access to teleportation for the champions, that I can't even confidently say the champions would've died the way AoC (almost) depicted. They didn't get to just teleport across the map straight to their divine beasts in the original timeline - the Creating a Champion book outlines the paths they each had to travel across the map to fight their way there. We could have had stuff like cool midair missions set high in the sky where Revali has to bee-line it to Medoh while avoiding flying directly over the castle, dodging guardian blasts from the ground with flying guardians on his tail, meanwhile Urbosa is on the ground having to fight her way into the desert as she tries to stay one step ahead of the guardian swarm - again adding additional context to how the champions lost. By the time they arrived at their divine beasts, they were exhausted and woefully unprepared after having to fight their way there. There's just so much they could have done in the true prequel timeline that we never got to see - we could've ended up with playable Purah and Robbie, we could have met new playable characters we never knew about like a high ranking general of the Hylian army to see the fall of Akkala Citadel through his eyes, all kinds of cool stuff. It just feels a bit weird to play a game which is based on BotW's story to begin with, then watch as it creates an alternative timeline in which... BotW effectively didn't even end up happening.
I agree. I wish it had been cannon to the actual events from botw. It would have made for a much more interesting story and made more sense. And while I didn't exactly hate terrako, it didn't really stand out to me as a character and its importance to the story may have felt forced. The game itself had some fun moments as the quests were enjoyable and some of the unlockable items were pretty cool to get. Also playing as characters other than link could be fun at times. Though they could have developed many of their personalities better. Overall the game itself isn't that much different to the original hyrule Warriors and, in my opinion, wasn't as fun as it could've been. I'm glad I'm not the only one who was disappointed by the game though. Maybe had they stuck to the cannon time line and spent more time on the development of the characters through the story it could've been better for me.
I dont get making a prequel and changing it so its not predictable. Thats what a prequel IS. Shouldve had it ending like it should have and having a shot of Link waking in the pool of resurrection to show there is hope
I do wish their was a route that led to the canon ending. But during this Gameplay Terrako never showed up and only Link can use Sheikah Slate Ruins. And soon led to the down fall of Hyrule.
My main issue with the game is just the fact that there is almost nothing done better in this than in Hyrule warriors definitive edition. In base Hyrule warriors the side content if far better than random fighting mission 37, you have the adventure maps where you can use your knowledge of other Zelda games to actually help. Also the roster is just uninteresting in AoC compared or normal Hyrule warriors just look at the full rosters of each + all the weapons each character uses just for link you have the basic sword the ball and chain from twilight princess and epona just naming a few and that's more interesting and more variety than sword, big sword, and spear.
Agreed, Age of Calamity is okay and all but I cannot get into it nearly as deep as I can the og hyrule warriors. The side content really adds so much to the game
I'd say age of calamity does better in its combat and mechanics but that's only because it built upon botw's already fun combat system. You can play around with the system quite a bit with the runes, special ability and paraglider(that are honestly much better than the items in og hyrule warriors). But yeah combat in the original felt rigid but was much more diverse and unique than age of calamity and also didn't have to suffer from terrible framerate issues.
@@Nosretep I think they never intended to create more original characters. I think the game was just made up with pre existing assets for a shorter development time so fans would keep calm from a lack of botw till the second one comes out soon. It's why even the "original" characters like impa is basically reskinned Paya.
Finally! I’m glad you made this video because I thought I was the only one who disappointed by the story. I wish the story was about the champions and expanded more on their goals/motivations. I know if the story was canon we already know what happens at the end of the game but the game could have made us care about the champions even more which would have made their eventual fall the more impactful and show that there still is light at the end of the darkness. But what we got was just a power fantasy with a guardian that I never cared for.
It seems people are just confused about the storyline and they're so surprised of what happened they keep spitting out random things that aren't true about the game.
@@airtiger4577 I agree with you people just get confused and the this happens and even really like it just a game and it’s not a prequel and it’s not part of the Zelda timeline because if it was then the developers would say that it was but in the trailer they did say that but it just people should stop getting work up because this is not the game they want but let’s hope Zeldamaster still like this game
I completely agree. The game would have been way better if it had stuck to the canon story. All the same, I can't really fault Koei for doing what they did because that's what warriors games are supposed to be: fan service. It perfectly succeeds at what it was trying to do. My one big problem with the game is advertising. Making a fan service game is great, just don't advertise it as something else.
To be honest I had a lot more fun with Hyrule Warriors definitive edition. Felt so much smoother. Edit: I also don't like how basically every character in AoC is pretty boring/bad to play. Whereas in Definitive edition, There were only like 2 characters who I dreaded playing.
Just curious what is your favorite character in Hyrule Warriors Def ed Mine is young link with the fierce diety mask which I also believe is the strongest character in the game
one of my favorite parts of botw was collecting the memories cause i was really curious to see exactly what happen 100 years ago so i was hype when i thought age of calamity was gonna be a prequel and i could see more of what happen in the past and yeah it was disappointing to realize it was a alternate timeline i feel the story was written that way to satisfy people who though botw story was too depressing and wanted a big happy ending.
I agree with this opinion, I’ve been playing this game for about a month and everything is fun, the combat the roster and the divine beast missions my only problem is the story I thought it was going to be a prequel of botw but we got an alternate universe.
The biggest issue with this game was that it was advertised as being a prequel to BOTW and not an alternative timeline so everyone was completely misled. Aside from that, the game was pretty fun especially when you want to blow off some steam
Hmm well not really. A prequel suggests the events that happened prior to BOTW. As soon as Terako was introduced (which was very early in the game) it was no longer the same timeline.
I agree heavily did not like the happy ending they gave Age of Calamity. Tbh it takes away from the heavy emotion that went into botw. The champions hard sacrifices so that that the hero would be the last one left along with the princess to save the day. All Age of Calamity did I felt was introduce an alternate timeline that turned everything into a joke where everyone wins due to some random small robot not even brought up in botw. It didnt feel like the prequel I was expecting. The tragedy is just gone.. oh well. I never bothered to play the game anyway. But I'm definitely gonna be playing botw 2 when that releases and am currently playing through Skyward Sword HD. Love the game a ton! :D
I have to agree with you I was excited to play this game, but after a hour of playing it and finding it wasn’t cannon I couldn’t bring myself to playing anymore. I just felt so lied to.
Thanks for making this, I completely agree. It's now been almost 10 months since the game released and it still frustrates me when I think back to how incredibly hyped I was for this game, followed by the crushing disappointment once I saw the direction the story was headed. I wanted to see BotW's backstory fleshed out more than *anything* man, it's my favourite story in the entire Zelda series. While I still enjoyed the gameplay and the story we got still at least had *some* good moments - so I can't really say I regret my purchase - I just find it ultimately unsatisfying when I look back on it. This game is, in my view, a massive missed opportunity. I still have the occasional night when I just go through the game's soundtrack on youtube, fantasizing about what could have been...
Ngl, in my opinion Hyrule's Warrior : Age of Calamity sounds like a Zelda fanfic on wattpad written by a 13 years old girl. Who also put an oc and wanted the oc to be the star of the story. This is just my opinion tho
YESSS THANK YOU. I really enjoyed AoC but I really would've preferred seeing the buildup to the calamity then the downfall of all the champions, Link, and Hyrule cause after all *they did advertise the game as a fucking prequel to BOTW* it just doesn't make sense that they decided to recon all of it :/. Good game but man the story was a big letdown
I loved playing through the game and I used Mipha most of the time! I do understand his gripes with the story but I personally enjoyed it. I wished that there were more costumes but there is still at least one more dlc pack coming out from the time I'm posting this so here's hoping!
Reasons why I hate Terrako- 1. He's a major simp 2. The only person he cares about is Zelda 3. During cutscenes, he likes to butt into conversations and make it all about him/Zelda when the scene has nothing to do with either of them. Just imagine if you were having an argument with your friend and just when you're about to settle it like reasonable people, your other friend butts in and starts relating the topic to him. How annoying would that be?
Yeah, i decided to watch youtube playthroughs before making a decision to buy and it was the whole fan fiction element that put me off, I thought that it just felt like a big what if and didnt add anything to the original botw. Great video dude 👍🏾
I actually agree the story could have been amazing had they shown us the original ending, but on the other hand we already knew that story. In no way do I feel disappointed by what we got instead.
I still remember how disappointing this game was when I purchased it at release. I'm not a fan of dynasty warrior gameplay so there was not too much for me when I found out hours in that it was not a prequel. On one hand it was my fault for purchasing a game I wasn't too keen on in terms of gameplay solely for the story. On the other hand Nintendo knew what they were doing by advertising it as a prequel, getting people like me that would have otherwise skipped the game to buy it.
I personally didn't like the first game. I enjoyed playing through the story, unlocked a few more characters then grew bored of it. The way items worked was just too slow for a warriors game. Whenever a different item was required, you'd have to stop to swap through the items before you could continue. At least, that's how it worked in the Definitive edition. It made the whole system feel shoehorned in because it didn't fit at all. Given that that was the unique mechanic for that game, it just... didn't work for me. AOC's unique mechanic, the runes, fit into the playstyle of the game so much better. Rather than slowing down the player, it meshes into the formula. Quickly pressing 2 buttons to activate the runes to counter weaknesses is better than OG Hyrule Warriors.
Really should’ve been marketed as “What would happen/An alternate timeline” rather than just “BOTW Prequel”. It leads people in the wrong direction. Edit: And also I love when the words Hero and Demise/Villain and Victory are in the same sentence so I would’ve loved to witness Hyrule’s Demise. I absolutely love the gameplay though. My favourite ( And for some people,Only) aspect in the game. Edit 2: this video has made me realise this game in a nutshell is Terrako.
they never said it was a BOTW prequel just that it was set 100 years before XD Terrako the time traveler is not canon so the rest of the game is not canon either XD
@@stefrockmartel _"They never said it was a BOTW prequel; they said it was set 100 years before BOTW"_ Those two things mean the same thing; set 100 years before BOTW = prequel to BOTW. They lied; this game doesn't take place 100 years before BOTW; it takes place in a separate timeline from BOTW.
To be honest I felt kind of upset we couldn’t get the cannon ending. I wish they should of had this ending but as a what if like they do in musou games of three kingdoms. You do the requirements to get the alternate positive ending during your play through of the main game. I still had fun though.
I definitely agree it was advertise wrong and until chapter 5ish? You can see some of things that are here could be canon. After 6 months after beating the game I still have mixed feelings with the game. There was great moments but some character dynamics felt unnatural especially with the future and past champions. I was fine with terrako until the end of chapter 2, realizing he was there to be the comical character and take up screentime.
For me, there were two things that ruined this game for me. For starters, I believe that this game would serve as a prequel to Breath of the Wild. One of my complaints with BOTW was that I thought the champions were not characterized enough for me to care about them. Some of them felt one-dimensional like Daruk and others I wish got more development like Revali and Mipha. I expected this game to address that issue by making these characters feel real and when they die, have it with a more emotional punch since we now care about them. This game did not do that. The minute I saw the cutscene with the robot showing Zelda saving Link to the Zelda and Link from the past, I thought “Oh no…..” I basically figured out the rest of the story from there. This was basically going to create a timeline where they succeed, which felt kind of cheapens the impact of Breath of the Wild’s plot. Also, the champions are still the same as they were in BOTW, and I really don’t understand why they decided to throw in the descendants of the champions in the story. If there is one pro I have, it’s that this is very much a story about Zelda finding the confidence within her to awaken the power that lies dormant inside her. This would have packed a better punch if the game stuck with BOTW plot where Hyrule is destroyed. I don’t feel like this game took any chances to improve upon BOTW’s story. Secondary, the poor frame rate actually hurts the game’s story. I’m not really a frame rate nazi, but I do think bad frame rate can ruin the gameplay experience. Seeing certain combos and attacks happen at slow speeds and chopping up constantly made playing through this game feel like a chore, especially when I already wasn’t invested in the story. However, I don’t really fault the game for this more so than just the Switch not being that powerful. It did run Fire Emblem Warriors and Hyrule Warriors well. Overall, I just couldn’t find it in me to continue playing this game because I was disappointed with the story and I thought the technical performance was very poor. Not really sure what to do with it. I’m just keeping it for the sake of having a Zelda game for the Switch
I agree with everything u said. When Nintendo advertised this game, they said we would get to learn more about the Champions and King Rhoam, but all the characters were just cardboard cutouts of their personalities in botw. That and the false advertising for the game's story was what really broke the game for me. The gameplay was actually the only saving grace in my opinion (after I learned to look past the frame rate issues). However, with it almost being a year since AoC came out, i've learned to live with the game, and accept it for what it is. I still don't like the direction it took the story and characters in, but I try to look at some of the things I did still like about. Such as the fact that it expanded on other parts of Zelda's character, and towards the end made her the badass princess she always had the potential to be. As well as the visual quality of the cutscenes. As long as this game doesn't have any relevance or affect on botw's sequel, I'm content with simply acting as though it doesn't exist for now.
Oh the frame rate issue is practically gone now. I don't get any frame drops unless I'm doing something super fast or demanding. Co-op still runs shit though lol
He said that the it's not Canon but it is. it just takes place in a timeline Which was created by the guardian that was in Zelda's study time Travelling into the past and stoping Everything from going badly which made a new just as canon timeline. it's canon dale with it.
Age Of Calamity was a ton of fun and was pretty harmless! Don’t get me wrong it would have been amazing and better to see the real prequel to BOTW. Age Of Calamity is a lot like Marvel What If because they changed many little things. Terriko, Link pulling master sword earlier in life later, Zelda getting powers later in life, and obviously the time travel stuff. This games story had a few problems but the gameplay and fanservise is amazing. This game should have been called The Legend Of Terriko Age Of The Retcon
Imagine if it was a game about Hyrule's downfall and then there was an end game where you can play a few maps in regular BotW Edit: also yea I love Terrako because I'm a basic bitch who loves good endings and things like Terrako but the explosion destroying Calamity Ganon's armor or whatever is bullshit
I was pissed when they saved all the champions I was hoping to see the fights that brought them to their fate…Instead we got this BS I felt like I wasted my money I even preordered this garbage… It was fun playing as Daruk and Mipha though but other than that it was crap…I should’ve just watched all the cut scenes on TH-cam and saved my money..
Makes no difference if I pre-order or not I still would’ve felt the same way…If I didn’t pre-order I would’ve bought the same day of release cause I wanted to play it…After playing through it is when I developed my feeling for the game…
While I did enjoy playing through Age of Calamity, there was something about it being a non-canon alternate timeline that bugged me. While the gameplay was still fun, the story did feel like a missed opportunity that could have focused on other characters aside from Link and Zelda solely, as well as provide further details on what Hyrule was like both prior to and during the Great Calamity. Plus, as you mentioned in the video, while the ending could have been tragic with the Champions dying, Link collapsing from exhaustion and Zelda activating her divine sealing power, the fact that Breath of the Wild comes along as a sequel would indeed shed some light on the darkness. In the end, while I did 100% the entire map and level up all the characters and their respective weapons to the max earlier this year, I have not felt any desire to return to this game, even with the release of its expansion pass. Instead, I'm content with just waiting for the inevitable release of Breath of the Wild's sequel sometime next year.
This response will be periodically updated through the video, because otherwise I’m going to forget half my points: I definitely understand about Terrako, but I didn’t think it was so bad. It seemed to me that Terrako was pretty well-preserved compared to the rest of the Sheikah tech, only missing a few individual parts. So Baby Zelda was pretty easily able to figure it out. Just like one of those shape-block puzzles little kids do, except more advanced. And if you buy into the theory that the Triforce of Wisdom already lays within Zelda at this point (given that Ganondorf never technically “died”, therefore restoring the Triforce), she could even have been influenced in that way. I like Terrako, but like you said, I think it undermines the profound and quiet sadness of BOTW’s story to make it so it only happened in one timeline, and in the other one Ganon’s most powerful form yet is defeated with the power of friendship. I won’t try to say that he’s some sort of creative supernova of ideas, because obviously he’s just another cutefunnysidekick, an idea we’ve seen done a billion times. Definitely should’ve just died when he died and not been restored for the final fight, though. As far as the Modern Champions thing, I can more fully agree. I think they were generally distinct enough gameplay-wise to justify it, but again, it really undermines BOTW’s story by taking away the deaths of the Champions just so they can be saved by their modern counterparts. And yeah, the entire game I was expecting Purah and/or Robbie to become playable characters, but it never happened… Furthermore, I do agree with the general sentiment that the game really didn’t deliver on the promise of seeing the Great Calamity actually happen and how it ravaged Hyrule. I think the most we ever see is people running from Castle Town or something. Nobody really seems affected at all, other than Terrako. Again, it devalues the profound and quiet sadness of BOTW, of a proud kingdom brought to its knees and destroyed by a powerful and corruptive force far beyond its control. Of the countless people who died at the hands of Ganon, the Guardians, and the Monsters. Of Link walking through the destroyed and broken remains of a kingdom long-dead. Here, it all gets taken care of in, like, a day. They could’ve at least wrung SOME storytelling potential out of the idea via those little material-request missions on the map, showing you actually rebuilding Hyrule to some extent, showing the heavy damage done even by a contained and quickly destroyed Calamity, but nope. The problems of the characters there have almost nothing to do with the events of the titular Calamity. As far as the gameplay goes, I didn’t mind it at all. I’ve never played any other hack-and-slashers or Warriors titles, but this was definitely a good first impression. They managed to infuse some of BOTW’s stuff too, such as paragliding, Sheikah runes, and flurry rushes. I enjoyed almost every character (wasn’t a huge fan of Zelda, but even she was aight), and the button combos were a ton of fun to figure out and execute in my opinion. Very good as far as the gameplay goes.
Stuff that hyrule warriors defenitive edition or hyrule warriors the original did better: Weapons: Every character has at least 1 unique weapon. In age of calamity The weapons are unoriginal and have almost no charm and are forgettable Story: the story to defenitive edition is great although it has its moments (I’m looking at you Cia Moments) while AOC has F(HAH)ing time travel Side levels: in DE (defenitive edition) they aren’t random levels there are adventure maps that have gimmicks that hide treasures and house challenges. In AOC they are BORING and unfun Missions: In DE they have unique missions that aren’t just “escort someone” or “Kill something”. In AOC the levels ARE SO BORING AND FEEL SO FORCED and most importantly CHARACTERS AND COSTUMES: in DE we had to wide variety of costumes unlocked through the adventure maps that are filled with references and the characters are unique and famil- oh right CIA. AOC HAS THE WORST CHARACTERS AND COSTUMES EVER THE COSTUMES ARENT UNIQUE THEY ALL ARE JUST FROM BOTW BESIDES THE HYRULE WARRIORS TUNIC
I had to stop playing it for awhile when I realized I had to save revali. Like- he's my favorite champion but at the same time, I like the original story better. And would prefer that!
They marketed this as Halo Reach and/or Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core. But they gave us Avengers... Age of Ultron... except Quicksilver was resurrected in the post-credits.
A side note, there is evidence that Nintendo used blatant false advertising. For example a few scenes where they remove characters in the trailer that would make the scene seem canon, like watch the Champions Unite trailer and you notice this: Theres a scene where Urbosa and Riju are in their Devine Beast but in the trailer Riju is removed, also the scene where Zelda cries over Terrako but the trailer makes it looks like Zelda cries over how Akkala Citadel, as well as a scene where she traveled to Akkala but without Terrako. And there's scenes that make it seam like the story will play out as it should like a shot where Daruk is about to be hit by something. People can like this game but in no way can this be excusable. Nintendo lied to us to sell us a fanfiction that is better off reserved as an alternative ending or DLC, just making an different timeline is completely superfluous and is nothing more than non canon fan service that's along the lines of actual web fan fiction that involves time travel and collaborations with past, present and future charactars that if you are being completely honest, no one asked for. This game does deserve praise for the interaction with the Champions that people wanted more of and the amazing music, but the story truly dissapoints since there was amazing potential to flesh out the true story, with emotion and hope for the future that would egg players on to play BOTW again. It's superfluous...
Exactly. I even liked the came in the end (for the most part), but I still find it INCREDIBLY dishonest and upsetting that they lied about what it was, calling it a "prequal" multiple times when it very clearly isn't. It was setting up fans to be disappointed.
I’m literally halfway through my second play through. I’m enjoying it more this time but I really enjoyed it the first time too. To each it’s own I guess.🤷🏾♀️
I loved the game too. I think the issue many people have is that they were shown coffee and they were given tea, in the sense that the game was advertised as a "what happened before BotW" but in reality the game was very different to that. If people bought the game for exactly what was advertised then I can see why they were disappointed, but if you were like me who tried the demo, loved the gameplay and bought the full game not caring/knowing it was meant to be a direct prequel, then it's perfectly fine. Basically, Nintendo made false advertisements and people (rightly so) are mad about it
@@Hey-qf3vf exactly. Age of Calamity was my first Warriors game and I bought it solely for the purpose of knowing what happened in Breath of the Wild's past. I'm glad I ended up liking the Warriors' style gameplay, bc the story totally didn't deliver what Nintendo had said it would, and it dampened my overall enjoyment of the game. For Zelda fans who don't care for Warriors gameplay and only bought AoC to know what happened, I feel bad that there was nothing they could enjoy about the game cuz Nintendo kinda tricked us. I'm surprised not as many ppl seem upset about that tho. I've only seen a few videos (including ZeldaMaster's) where ppl actually criticized the game for its disappointments, even tho at this point AoC's been out for almost a year
One thing I do want to talk about is the purpose of the future champions allowing the past ones to survive. You're definitely right about them not doing much to save the champions until Link and Terriko arrive, but I think the implication from the cutscenes and dialogue is that the present champions died before Link could save them, but lasted longer in AoC thanks to the future champions. It's not the best story, but I think it does give a clear purpose to it
If it were set up up better I would agree (don't ask me how the hell they would accomplish that!) But I think the worst part is that it undermines the tension. In what could have been a memorable level where you desperately race towards your objective, hoping there's still time, you instead get shown a cutscene that guarantees you win before gameplay even starts! This is supposed to be a really serious moment but it's practically all over before it even begins. I'll give the game just one thing though, this section is really fun if you turn your brain off.
I literally agree with you on all of these points about the story. I don't understand how people can defend the writing of this game. It's narrative was terrible. The original Hyrule Warriors, especially the definitive edition now, is so much better imo.
I was not disappointed per se, cos I still enjoyed the hell out of that game, but I have the same sentiments about the ‘twist’. I bought the game knowing that the champions will die at some point, but they treated this as a sort of fan service to let them all live (and bring out a few other people from botw). I mean, I like the idea, but I would’ve loved that if it’s a separate story as a DLC and retain the original ending.
I belive they should of went the halo reach and ff7 precule game. Where the last mission obj would survived and be a endless onslaught unit you die and fail and the final cutscenes be zelda putting the master sword back and fight ganon
I actually liked it. In my opinion, yes it would've been nice to play through the ACTUAL events and the advertising was kind of shading. BUT, at the same time the story was enjoyable enough for me to look past that. Besides, this could even serve as new theory material, considering the body in botw 2s teaser much more resembles astor over ganondorf
AoC came out almost a year ago, and only a couple weeks after the game was released, many of my favorite Zelda-tubers and theorists had stopped making videos on it. I think at this point Zelda Master is the only one I'm subscribed to who's still making videos on it- and, aside from his walkthrough videos posted several months ago, this is the only one he's posted discussing the game. Since AoC isn't a real prequel to botw and doesn't bring anything new to the table in terms of botw's characters and lore, there really wasn't much for anyone to make theories about, and there still isn't. And Ganon looks NOTHING like Astor in botw 2's trailer lol. Ganon (similar to Ocarina of Time) is said to be of Gerudo origin, hence the reason as to why his corpse looks Humanoid in botw 2. But in the first sequel trailer for the game, at some point a silhouette of the corpse's original form flashes on the wall of the cave Link and Zelda were in, and its figure was a *massive* dude with claws and really long hair. He definitely doesn't look like Astor lol
@@animelover-vj6qy yeah, that stumped me as well at first, although I think I have a few explanations. In AoC, astor is used by ganon to resurrect himself. When looking at real mummified corpses, they're usually skeletal and grey exactly how it appears in the trailer. As well as this, astors red hair and head piece can be matched with the more distinct details on the presumed ganon. As for the shadow, whether it's demise, or something else its just symbolism either way. It's my belief that even if the story has been changed, the character of astor is canonical, and him being used by ganon could even be a solid explanation for why the calamity started up so suddenly in the base game of botw
@@alexnewby2004 Astor’s hair is black and his gem is designed to resemble a malice eye, Ganondorf’s headpiece looks nothing like Astor’s, it looks like the same yellow gem that Ganondorf has always been shown to wear.
@@animelover-vj6qy Then they are fools who based their entire theories on straws and lore that will be retconned by the drop of a hat. Honestly, you'll get better information from Zelda fans who actually looked into the history of Zelda game development and the various backstories and retcons made through the franchise's history.
In short, this game should have been the 'Halo: Reach' of the Legend of Zelda canon, and Nintendo failed to deliver. Glad that I didn't bother to buy it...
With age of calamity coming after botw game, it was hard for Nintendo to create a story that is not predictable. Age of calamity’s cutscenes, give this game a lot more energy I think. Even if it is now new, it feels new in a way because you feel that you are along with link and Zelda in aoc different form being mostly alone in botw. So, I feel that they story was right for what it was.
I love this game and people really need to give this game a chance and ok what is it with people in 2020 and this year not give this and skyward sword a chance like seriously people
Predictability is not a bad thing; when did so many people decide that it was? I'd much rather have a predictable story in a game than a story that ruins itself in an attempt to not be predictable.
And even if they mandated that there had to be a happy ending, they could have allowed alternate routes through the game. I would have loved a gritty tragedy for the game, no doubt, but I would also have loved to find hidden acts you could do throughout levels in order to unlock alternate endings, maybe having a "perfect run" culminate in Zelda, Link, and the Champions being able to defeat Ganon without being killed. All in all, a terrible waste.
My general thought on this video after watching it completely is I feel like your love for a breath of the wild kind of skewered with your love for this game don’t get me wrong I did agree with terrako being the center of attention for the entire game well I do like his character it kind of had The Walking Dead season two affect where they just relied on this one person to carry the cast throughout the entire game but if this were direct prequel to breath of the wild it kind of wouldn’t be considered a hyrule Warriors game and some people even expected it to be the same battle style as it was inside of breath of the wild I personally enjoyed seeing the alternative outcome of breath of the wild Though that idea of making an alternative ending of breath of the wild did make the story a little bit whack. I never actually thought of comparing the game to breath of the wild as it felt like a completely different game which was completely fine to me I get the game was kind of built up to be a prequel but me personally I never actually thought too deeply of it and just enjoy the game I mean you were complaining about some characters being in the game that shouldn’t have or they just had cooler opportunities but then you were complaining about how they brought the characters from the future into the past I honestly couldn’t tell which side you were on you can’t expect Ira Warriors game to be A direct prequel to breath of the wild and carry all the same qualities such as the gameplay or story
I agree that AoC was a bait and switch and that Terrako was annoying. That's my biggest frustration. HOWEVER, I completely and totally disagree that this game shit on the original champions. The side missions and the cutscenes showed us more of their personalities and roles in the world. And I don't care what you say, Sidon saving Mipha was worth the new champions coming back. Plus, the idea is that the new champions are learning how to rebuild their own world from the original champions.
4:50 I mean, if anyone remembers Samurai Warriors and the Honnō-ji incident stage, we know that fighting a battle where you canonically lose still has an appeal. I’d have liked it if the first half of the game acted like the prequel and then after the fall of hyrule have the events play out with terrako going back in time and doing all the events of age of calamity. Heck, I’d pay for a DLC where we go to the unchanged timeline and have to fight the losing battle as a form of “expert” mode if that is too much to ask to fit into the base game.
I won’t argue I really liked the game I literally completed the story in one day flat even playing through the night to complete side quests I really hated the repair terrako mission the games fun and all but I’m kinda annoyed that we got baited to think that this game was an actual prequel
17:00 lol I'm sorry but everyone is extremely unique, no one *really* has a limited playstyle, you just probably haven't played enough to find everyone distinct, or know what makes everyone so special. Everyone has weakness and usually, very high strengths. Coming from someone who has an unhealthy amount of hours, you should definitely play with some other characters, like shiekah slate Zelda, one of the very best characters in the game, she may seem basic but has quite the complex playstyle if you know what you're doing. I definitely agree that the games story was shit, I didn't really expect to be very good. They specifically advertised it to be "the events of 100 years ago" not "the prequel to botw" so really that our fault for not understanding.
I 100% agree on shiekah slate zelda, I'm sure for a lot of people it was like "Zelda sucked to play, but now that she has her powers she's great!" While I'm over here like "Zelda was better without the bow of light." I'll say that shiekah slate zelda is great IF you know what you're doing, if you don't then Zelda seems weak and unfun.
Here’s a question. If they advertised the game as what it actually is and not that it’s canon do you think you would have been as disappointed with the story? Also as a side note yeah the ganon in this game wasn’t the best by any means sure but it was still 100X then Dark beast ganon.
In my opinion, it also had a lot of focus on zelda that could have been given to the champions and it practically repeated the zelda-filled story of botw which was fine in that game but should not have been repeated.
HONESTLY I think more likes should be on this video and this opinion should be heard. I didn't end up hating the game, but I agree it was incredibly disappointing how they intentionally framed the trailers and lead up TO MAKE US THINK it would be a prequal. Nothing they say implies that this game wouldn't be canon, or that it'd be a side story, but instead the direct OPPOSITE which was lying. It was quite sad.
I loved this video. Ugh it was also annoying when the king ended up surviving. BOTW had a tragic story and sad stories stick with us. But at the end of AOC literally everyone lived and nothing was really lost. It just seemed too fan-servicy. I think they were afraid of a spin off title having more of a canonical story than the original game.
I mean we have the fact that the characters we meet in botw fight to save the champions but in the end in their timeline they will still dead, also best yiga boy is dead and also Astor
Perfectly explained my problem with this game! Thank you It’s a cheap marvel story that looks epic but doesn’t add up anything to push the story of botw This wasn’t even the age of “calamity” I’m not angry anymore as this is clearly a spin-off I think there was a big creative limit or maybe too much fanfic freedom from koei tecmo to do whatever they wanted A proper prequel could have pushed players to love and respect the champions even more but these cutscenes were really not so different from botw Even ignoring why revali actually hated link in the first place This is decent game but they truly made sure you are not missing out anything by skipping it
Playing Breath of the Wild, one wish for me was to find a way and save the fallen champions. Age of Calamity did exactly that with a unique twist in gameplay using the Warriors setting. While the ending feels pretty happy-go-lucky, I'm fortunate not to have been spoiled by the time paradoxes of the future champions and the twist was really appreciated. This also really felt like Zelda's story and really focuses on her character development more than any other game in the series (ironically the one game that doesn't bear her name in the title). At the end of the day, it's just a game, best just to suspend disbeliefs and enjoy its merits instead of its faults (except for the terrible frame-rate!).
I liked this game the first time I played it then I replayed it and the stupid time traveling to rewrite time ending really just left a bitter taste in my mouth
I agree with you that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was a disappointment and I'm not sure what they were thinking. I have been having a great time recently watching some of your older Let's Play series such as Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Speaking of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, how come that game got a proper prequel (Torna: the Golden Country), but all Breath of the Wild gets is a what-if fanservice game?
@Zachary Erickson Nothing at all but things have been changed and I kinda wanna see him go through it . It's pretty cool following along. I've been doing it for years and he's never failed me :)
Please consider watching the video before leaving any feedback. The video has more context than just the title.

@🍷Hebra🦜 idk I think we’re getting more characters and stages. That’s good.

This story should have been the DLC to the true prequel... they could have had us all believe we had won until a blood moon swerve leading to the evacuation sequence. That would have made for a dramatic and emotional story. Then we would feel invested.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS THAT IS SO GOOD SOMEONE NEEDS TO HIRE U NOW
I know it's a year late, but that's what I thought would happen, giving a great setup to Breath of the Wild
For me the character who got it worse was Revali, in his diary in the second dlc it showed how he would push himself to do better so he could prove himself to everyone, It also explains why he acted the way he did to link. It gave him more depth
But in age of calamity he comes across as a egotistical asshole that just hates link for no reason, in the first cutscene he and link have he acts hostile towards him for no reason, and it continues throughout the game
Because jealousy
Nah he still hates Link for the same reason being because he is jealous of him and worried that Link may surpass him. Yeah because he already sees that Link is very skilled and could be a rival for him.
@@Jdudec367 no but he didn't even have the master sword then so him being ''Jealous'' doesn't make any sense

@Sunset's Channel
Even though Nintendo says it's canon...
I feel no need for this game anymore actually, if u like it that’s fine I respect that, but it isn’t for me
I regret buying in gameplay it’s fun but in story wise I hate it
@@rjlangaman4741 yes same, towards the end i just skipped the cutscenes cuz i didn't wanna see that stupid egg anymore
I dunno....this was a retcon and a rewrite but I still think it was a fun nice alternative story. But fair enough then.
Yep That’s what they did
I’ve never wanted characters that I liked to die so badly until I finished this game. As much as I like Age of Calamity, I can’t say I’m not disappointed just thinking about what we could have gotten
i don't understand that. People really wanted to lose Link,Daruk,Urbosa,Mipha and Revali at the end of the game and lose all of there progress ?
@@stefrockmartel It worked in Crisis Core, Shadow of the Collossus and heck even in the original Hyrule Warriors.
Maybe had they stuck to the cannon time line and spent more time on the development of the characters through the story it could've been better for me.

that exactly what they gonna do in the november DLC. Link Gonna die at the end of the DLC and we gonna unlock Astor,Sooga and Harbinger Ganon
@@stefrockmartel that DLC gonna rewrite the games story? Cos the issue was the story changing the entire history
I've had 300 hrs play time on switch version of the og Hyrule warriors and haven't even 100% a single map in the adventure mode...
Kinda BoTW fault for not having a bunch of returning characters.
All we have is Link,Zelda,Ganondorf,Impa,Beedle and the Great Deku Tree.
@@Nosretep I think they never intended to create more original characters. @@tammzy65 I guess. But at least we have an idea to what happened before BOTW
I agree heavily did not like the happy ending they gave Age of Calamity. Tbh it takes away from the heavy emotion that went into botw. :D
Link having the Mastersword aka the blade of evils bane: can't do shit against Calamity Ganon
Small egg guardian explodes at Calamity Ganon:
You have a point. I really got upset when I saw the game advertice as a prequel and then just make a fanfic.
I have to agree with you I was excited to play this game, but after a hour of playing it and finding it wasn’t cannon I couldn’t bring myself to playing anymore. I just felt so lied to.
I needed some zeldamaster my life
Thanks for making this, I completely agree.
“Shamanala Ding Dong Twist”
It sounds hilarious and I laughed so hard at that 🤣
Same 😂😂
Ngl, in my opinion Hyrule's Warrior : Age of Calamity sounds like a Zelda fanfic on wattpad written by a 13 years old girl. Who also put an oc and wanted the oc to be the star of the story. This is just my opinion tho
Good example
Age of Calamity is really just "What If the Champions survived?"
@Henry Allred I’m not saying that’s a bad thing btw.

Terrako is by far my least favorite “character” in the Zelda franchise.
Yeah. He makes Navi look like a very likeable companion.
Reasons why I hate Terrako-
1. He's a major simp
2. The only person he cares about is Zelda
@@adelinafernandes8542 He's not a simp? Zelda literally created him so he does his job in protecting her. He just hates Impa.
Really? More than Tingle or Navi? Damn
It feels like Nintendo just wants to make him their version of R2d2
Yeah, i decided to watch youtube playthroughs before making a decision to buy and it was the whole fan fiction element that put me off, I thought that it just felt like a big what if and didnt add anything to the original botw. Great video dude 👍🏾
The only thing that no one could complain about is master kohga, no one can judge him on anything and he’s absolutely canon
The legend returned when we needed him to
As a fan grew up playing warrior games this easily top 6 don't know why the first hyrule warriors played way better tho
My opinions on the game were very positive, but once they brought in the future champions my love for this game diminished.
Same. I was very much enjoying my playthrough of the game until I realized the direction the story was going in and I was like "wtf if this???"
Edit 2: this video has made me realise this game in a nutshell is Terrako.
they never said it was a BOTW prequel just that it was set 100 years before XD
Terrako the time traveler is not canon so the rest of the game is not canon either XD
It feels like forever since a ZeldaMaster video
He said that the it's not Canon but it is.
it just takes place in a timeline
Which was created by the guardian
that was in Zelda's study time
Travelling into the past and stoping
Everything from going badly
which made a new just as canon
timeline. it's canon dale with it.
Imagine if it was a game about Hyrule's downfall and then there was an end game where you can play a few maps in regular BotW
Edit: also yea I love Terrako because I'm a basic bitch who loves good endings and things like Terrako but the explosion destroying Calamity Ganon's armor or whatever is bullshit
I’m also a basic bitch

This response will be periodically updated through the video, because otherwise I’m going to forget half my points:
I definitely understand about Terrako, but I didn’t think it was so bad.
And yeah, the entire game I was expecting Purah and/or Robbie to become playable characters, but it never happened…
Furthermore, I do agree with the general sentiment that the game really didn’t deliver on the promise of seeing the Great Calamity actually happen and how it ravaged Hyrule.
@Danny Dominelli What destruction? Castle Town is wrecked, but nothing else, really. Most everyone survives.
Let's see, the egg is more powerful than the Desendent of the damn Goddess Hylia(Zelda) and Link who is supposed to be the true hero
Stuff that hyrule warriors defenitive edition or hyrule warriors the original did better:
Weapons: Every character has at least 1 unique weapon. In age of calamity The weapons are unoriginal and have almost no charm and are forgettable
Story: the story to defenitive edition is great although it has its moments (I’m looking at you Cia Moments) while AOC has F(HAH)ing time travel
Side levels: in DE (defenitive edition) they aren’t random levels there are adventure maps that have gimmicks that hide treasures and house challenges. In AOC they are BORING and unfun
Missions: In DE they have unique missions that aren’t just “escort someone” or “Kill something”. In AOC the levels ARE SO BORING AND FEEL SO FORCED
and most importantly
CHARACTERS AND COSTUMES: in DE we had to wide variety of costumes unlocked through the adventure maps that are filled with references and the characters are unique and famil- oh right CIA. AOC HAS THE WORST CHARACTERS AND COSTUMES EVER THE COSTUMES ARENT UNIQUE THEY ALL ARE JUST FROM BOTW BESIDES THE HYRULE WARRIORS TUNIC
I wish they just did the original bad ending
I had to stop playing it for awhile when I realized I had to save revali. Like- he's my favorite champion but at the same time, I like the original story better. And would prefer that!
I was wondering when you were going to upload master of Zelda. By the way, when are you going to upload your walkthrough of skyward sword hd?
yeah
Like same I just about say that like when are you going to do skyward sword hd
Yeah. I vastly prefer to play Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edtion over Age of Calamity.
I’m literally halfway through my second play through. I’m enjoying it more this time but I really enjoyed it the first time too. To each it’s own I guess.🤷🏾♀️
It more about the potential the story had than the gameplay
It was the first hack and slash Zelda game I've play so I really liked it, To be honest, i do want to play the other Hyrule warrior games though
*game
There's only one other hyrule warriors game and the best version is on switch
4:39 he literally said that
I love this game and people really need to give this game a chance and ok what is it with people in 2020 and this year not give this and skyward sword a chance like seriously people
Predictability is not a bad thing; when did so many people decide that it was?
We wanted to see what happened 100 years ago not an alternate timeline where the win
Yah I knew it wasn't the prequel we were looking for as soon as I saw that it was a divergent timeline
I agree. Loved the first half of the game until *time travel*
Mipha in both: *dies*
Me: don’t worry link there are other fish in the se- wait is she alive in hyrule warriors!?

I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game. It came at a great time, the DLC has added to the game, so I'm very happy with it.
Same. I liked this game a lot. Put so many hours trying to get all the collectibles.
Then there are comments saying "Well I liked the game" getting more likes than the facts
@@Fermin-hw5pd Facts.
On a literal opinion piece. ....Riiiiiight.
Thank you
It’s a cheap marvel story that looks epic but doesn’t add up anything to push the story of botw
This wasn’t even the age of “calamity”
I’m not angry anymore as this is clearly a spin-off
I think there was a big creative limit or maybe too much fanfic freedom from koei tecmo to do whatever they wanted
A proper prequel could have pushed players to love and respect the champions even more but these cutscenes were really not so different from botw
Even ignoring why revali actually hated link in the first place
This is decent game but they truly made sure you are not missing out anything by skipping it
You haven't posted In so long glad your back
Playing Breath of the Wild, one wish for me was to find a way and save the fallen champions.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Almost-But Not-Calamity.
I liked this game the first time I played it then I replayed it and the stupid time traveling to rewrite time ending really just left a bitter taste in my mouth
For comparison, we expected a similar experience to Crisis Core FFVII but instead got a FE Fates-like one.
I agree with you that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was a disappointment and I'm not sure what they were thinking. I have been having a great time recently watching some of your older Let's Play series such as Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
Speaking of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, how come that game got a proper prequel (Torna: the Golden Country), but all Breath of the Wild gets is a what-if fanservice game?
another thing aoc lacked is the ability to play as the antagonists. like thats what made me want the original hyrule warriors to begin with
I agree, story revealed nothing new to the story of botw. Sooga was cool though
I feel like if the story had both the what if scenario and the actual BOTW events it would have been much better
And me here being a sad boy waiting for Skyward Sword HD Guide TwT
Take your time tho ^^
@Zachary Erickson Nothing at all but things have been changed and I kinda wanna see him go through it . It's pretty cool following along. I've been doing it for years and he's never failed me :)
Perhaps but I know Seereax switch to HD for his let's play. But I'm not trying to force anything. Just asking.
