For those wondering about the animation, it was done by Toei, studio behind Dragon Ball and One Piece. Some of the best animated episodes you see in this show are done by Toei Animations, which makes it all the more unfortunate that they hardly get utilized in Season 3, as Season 3 is mostly animated by AKOM, who are notorious for animation errors (Carnage in C Minor)
So we have AKOM to thank for such things as battle scenes with bots that look like they were drawn by 5 year olds and obvious errors like Bruticus fighting beside the Combaticons (Surprise Party) and Devastator fighting beside the Constructicons (Carnage in C Minor). You would think they would have tried to learn at least a little bit about the characters they were hired to draw. Worst mistake or glitch I recall seeing in the first 2 seasons was a scene with Sideswipe in the Decepticon base with Soundwave while Megatron was giving orders.
As many gaffs as AKOM have made, when they really wanted they also could produce some pretty good animation. The first two episodes of Rebirth have some really smooth movement and neat camera tricks here and there. Oh, and those commercial bumpers involving Scorponok and Highbrow, by G1 standards those are pure sakuga goodness!
I liked how, after Galvatron was running away, and saw Cyclonus being captured, calling for help.....he STOPPED running, and turned to look. For a moment, a brief moment, it looks like Galvatron was going to turn back and save Cyclonus, who was one of the only friends he has.
Seeing Arcee use Galvatron's fusion cannon and the recoil knocking her backwards like that reminds me of what happened when Brawn did the exact same thing with Megatron's fusion cannon saying 'Now that was quite the Kick' which is why whenever Megatron fires his fusion cannon he always holds onto it for apparently even Megatron knows the full power of his cannon.
@@straybeans6561The force of the energy released pushing back on the cannon. Smaller bots couldn’t handle it. Even Megatron/Galvatron had to compensate in some way to avoid throwing off the shot. For instance when Galvatron fires he aims low and raises his arm with the shot.

Mine too. And a lot of characters are well presented and characterised, especially Arcee getting a more than support role for a change. And as a steadfast Season 3 Decepticon lover, I think this is one of their best showings, especially when Galvatron abandons Cyclonus to the Dweller.
Must say, throwing teammates at energy vampires is a pretty bad idea. If you add another energy vampire, you'll soon be overwhelmed. Yes, escaping would be easier since you won't have to care about anyone else dragging you behind, but the fact that you've only gotten yourself even more outnumbered could have made Galvatron very unlucky if he ended up being unable to run.
One of my favourite points, very minor, is that the Decepticons keep fighting off the Dweller temporarily. When the nets come for Galvatron he twists and fights it off temporarily before it gets him. Same for Cyclonus. It looks more realistic, that the characters are putting up a fight. Also love the fact that Arcee gets blasted by the recoil of the Particle Cannon. Speaking of, Arcee isn't even a toy character and she gets quite the push here. Very welcome. She doesn't always get the best treatment but she comes across as capable and badass here (and before anybody points out she needs 'rescuing'... so does Ultra Magnus. Twice! And once by Arcee). The final point of fun for me is that Galvatron actually willingly abandons Cyclonus. Very very cold. It shows that whilst Cyclonus is madly loyal for Galvatron, the feeling is not mutual. He's truly a villain!
I'll give Galvatron some credit. He did throw ALL the Sweeps at it first, so that he and Cyclonus could escape. But yeah, he's not going to put it all on the line for anyone, not even his most loyal lieutenant. Maybe he was still pissed at Cyclonus for tricking him to Torkulon. And yeah, Arcee totally rocked this one.
@@brevemclendon6579 Oh yeah, Cyke is his last port of call, if you will. Clearly they can produce more Sweeps but Cyclonus is unique. I just found it an interesting character beat. And considering how some fans characterise Megatron as a bastion of loyalty to his troops, I would have been interested to see the same scene play out if it were Megatron and Soundwave as well. I rather suspect it would have been the same except when Galvatron meets up with Arcee and Magnus, rather than try and kill them, I expect Megatron would broker an alliance.
You can actually see Galvatron hesitating for a moment before running. He's a craven coward but that says a lot that he thinks about Cyclonus as a solid soldier just enough to think over saving him.
This episode is Transformers meet Inhumanoids. The animation is far better than the avg of season 3. And if I'm not mistaken, Wreck gar said "Yo Joe" when he saved Ultra Magnus lol
I feel the idea was referenced and used for beast machines,notice the ape like face the spider leg creature and the hard shell creature resembling nobles savage mode.Not to mention the liquid being like technorganic gew. Also when scourge took the matrix sure he melted fusing up.But I feel he was about to turn into a fish or shark alt mode.The matrix was going to make him the 1st beastwars issue transformer.

8:35 - that scene freaked me out as a kid. This monster essentially ripping away at a Sweep while he's alive. They animated 'blood' and an open wound and everything! Pretty gruesome at the time for a Transformers episode!
This episode is kind of heart-wrenching because after the Autobots constructed the power core to supply limitless energy for themselves, only to have to get rid of it because of the stupid quintessons.
I am SO glad Hasbro uploaded the ORIGINAL cut of the series WITHOUT all the added-in explosion sounds the later DVD rips would dub over EVERY laser blast. Ones that blow out your eardrums.

Galvatron held up against the monsters he fought them off and did better than his troops and the autobots Props to arcee for fighting off the dweller too
Arcee is at her best in Five Faces of Darkness and this episode. Ya know why this episode is so awesome? Because it’s written by Paul Dini one of the writers of Batman the Animated series and Justice League.
This might be the best animated episode of G1, certainly the best of S3, and easily my favorite of the season after "Webworld". If only FFoD had looked this good...
This is got to be my favorite episode of season 3 of G1 Transformers, besides Return Of Optimus Prime. If only the entire season 3 had this type of animation, because the animation in this episode is awesome.
The thing about the Quintessons that made no sense was this: During the 4 million Earth years that Optimus and Megatron and their crews were on Earth in stasis lock, why didn't the Quintessons retake Cybertron? Cybertron was dangerously low on energy and the best warriors and leaders of each faction was missing, presumed lost. Were they afraid of Alpha Trion? Possible. However, my own theory was that they knew of Unicron and that the Matrix of Leadership was what could destroy him. So they bided their time until Unicron's destruction to begin their plans. As a bonus to their plans, the leadership of each faction changed, the Decepticons now had a raging lunatic for a leader and the Autobots had a new Prime, that while he had access to the full power and wisdom of the Matrix was still new and could still be tricked, such as when Rodimus gladly returned the Matrix to undead Optimus in Dark Awakening.

One of the many things I like about this episode was how the characters kept moving forward. Even when Magnus and Arcee lost their whole team, they didn't break down. They got up and kept moving forward.
And same on Decepticon side. Galvatron doesn't hesitate really when he loses Cyclonus. Shows that whilst Cyclonus is dependent on Galvatron, that relationship isn't mutual.

Yet another GI Joe/TF connection. I've only realized as an adult the numerous connections between the two shows. (With Flint and Cobra Commander showing up this season)
This would explain the connection to Beast Wars and Beast Machines. Especially Beast Machines since as Primal put it: "Cybertron once supported organic life". It's also a reference in Transformers Prime with the zombiebot thing and Breakdown.
You can tell Season 3 was more serious (in some aspects) compared to other Seasons. In Seasons 1 and 2, they would always used the word Terminate and Destroy when referring to Death. Here they straight up say Kill and Die.
WRONG! These are NOT Zombicons and those don't exist. These chacracters are still alive just possessed. Terrocons (Prime) are DEAD transformers brought back to life (not REAL life since their sparks are in the Allspark.) BIG DIFFERENCE CLOWN!
Ironic how Season 3 had both the highest quality animation (this episode and 'Call of the Primitives') and lowest quality animation ('Carnage in C- Minor') in the series.
I think you gotta keep the series inventive and interesting with new characters. This episode demonstrates that it's still G1 just more intensified with and with regard to seasons 1 and 2 this makes season 3 great and the core of what the transformers have been in for millions of cybertron years.
History would disagree with you. The most successful shows and franchises kept their core cast and themes. Adding new casts (who were typically disposable) and minor story arcs is what drove them. Replacing cast members usually resulted in the show or franchise plummetting. The Power Rangers are an exception to this but it was due to insightfulness but the management greed to keep the cast pay low and employees disposable. It wasn't really until Game of Thrones that people began to accept character death and replacement as part of the franchise experience. Hasbro damn near killed off their own toyline and cartoon series with the death of Prime. Seban took the Hasbro approach to move product. Devoid of pushing toy as a profit motive both TFs and PRs could've both enjoy longevity with their core cast. The problem with S1 and S2 was that there was too much focus around Prime and Megz and the stories were boring, fast-paced, and incoherent. Some of that was fixed with S3 but they also replaced the characters ATST. You ended up with a mixed bag.
Somehow I missed this episode when I was a kid. Really cool I got to see a “ new episode” now that I’m in my late 30s. Made me almost forget how old I am
So many horror elements. I was totally unprepared for the freakout I got from this when I was a little kid. (5 or 6 at the time.) I still think this is probably the darkest of all U.S. Transformers episodes. Yes, despite Dark Awakening: the ending was oddly optimistic with and despite Optimus' courageous death. Kinda like Star Trek II in that regard, he died so the Autobots could live: another death and life thing. I always wondered if that inspired the episode in some way.
I dunno. Dark Awakening literally gave me nightmares. The idea that my hero, Optimus, was ripping apart and his mind was distorted honestly freaked me out, and I still feel a little dirty watching that episode now, and I'm almost 40 years old. Dweller feels dark, sure, but fun, and everybody is OK at the end. I liken it more to Call of the Primatives or Return of Optimus Prime - 'all the regulars get killed / transformed by plot X monster / virus, changing colour as they go.' All three stories have a lot in common in terms of structure. That said all three are strong showings for Galvatron (even Primatives, for his cameo, he's great!). So I'm on board.

@@chrisedwards3214 Powerglide, Skyfire and all the Arialbots appear to die in Dark Awakening, but Powerglide and the Aerialbots reappear in other episodes, as well... True for Ratbat. Technically everybody is dying throughout though. I only watched Primitives a few nights ago and I'm always shocked by Ratbat being chomped on. Better question. In that episode it does appear that all the animal based TFs are there... except Laserbeak and Buzzsaw. Where be they? We know Laserbeak is still around, and Buzzsaw is around in Headmasters...
A fantastic and brilliant manner of incorporating vampirism into the TF universe! And the icing on the cake is that the episode was written by the great Paul Dini himself! 👏
Given that he can just shrug off one of the most dangerous creatures in the cartoon, this episode is fine example of just how frickin powerful Mega... Galvatron just is.

The Quintessons are looking for Transformers in the Movie and Five Faces of Darkness, they explicitly aren't dealing with any since their sole purpose is to find and pick off any stragglers or go on a kidnap session (like Five Faces). If they had encountered Megatron, they would have found him 'guilty or innocent'... Not dealt with him. The only reason they start to deal with other races, including the Decepticons, is because the Autobots destroy Quintessa. Then it's explicit that they change their tactics up to get ahold of Cybertron again. And in terms of Megatron meeting them... Megatron is shown to cavort with alien beings for mutual gain, as seen on Monacus. So he would possibly have been more cordial than Galvatron but it would have likely gone the same way (mutual betrayal etc.).
Yeah, the bearded scientist type that shows up in a bunch of episodes, the one with a ruined face in this episode. I'll also take a Mara-Al-Utha (the antagonist from Madmans Paradise).
It would have been great to have the giant leech do to Galvatron's face what it did to the Quintisons' face centuries ago. But couldn't kill Galvatron his toy is still up for sale
This is easily one of the more brutal episodes of G1. Usually we just see them getting bruises, in here you have facing getting ripped off, entire limbs getting eaten

Not Black Arachnia, it was Airachnid. Similar characters, but entirely different while BA was more of an anti hero, Airachnid was completely evil, and so good at it. Airachnid was inspired in Black Arachnia though, and I still hurt that she got a crappy figure instead of a really good one like the rest of the characters. What's even weirder is that no 3rd Party company has made justice into making a great 3rd party version of the character.

My favorit episode of season 3, The gloom and terror of the Energy leech combined with "The Sweeps" theme creates a perfect atmosphere. "I don't know what thing is back in the tunnel but even if it gets me, I'll die with the satisfaction of knowing the universe will have 2 more Autobots to Mourne!"

Arcee is at her best in Five Faces of Darkness and this episode. Ya know why this episode is so awesome? Because it’s written by Paul Dini one of the writers of Batman the Animated series and Justice League.

This is got to be my favorite episode of season 3 of G1 Transformers, besides Return Of Optimus Prime. If only the entire season 3 had this type of animation, because the animation in this episode is awesome.
This, Five Faces of Darkness part 5, Ghost in he Machine and the Return of Optimus Prime part 2 were the best. IMO

The thing about the Quintessons that made no sense was this: During the 4 million Earth years that Optimus and Megatron and their crews were on Earth in stasis lock, why didn't the Quintessons retake Cybertron? Cybertron was dangerously low on energy and the best warriors and leaders of each faction was missing, presumed lost. Were they afraid of Alpha Trion? Possible. However, my own theory was that they knew of Unicron and that the Matrix of Leadership was what could destroy him. So they bided their time until Unicron's destruction to begin their plans. As a bonus to their plans, the leadership of each faction changed, the Decepticons now had a raging lunatic for a leader and the Autobots had a new Prime, that while he had access to the full power and wisdom of the Matrix was still new and could still be tricked, such as when Rodimus gladly returned the Matrix to undead Optimus in Dark Awakening.
It's also possible that, with all their other sly dealings in the galaxy, they were kept busy elsewhere.

These parts got me laughing.
While scolding the Sweeps, an anime trope of lines surrounding him as he yelled is shown.
One of the many things I like about this episode was how the characters kept moving forward. Even when Magnus and Arcee lost their whole team, they didn't break down. They got up and kept moving forward.
And same on Decepticon side. Galvatron doesn't hesitate really when he loses Cyclonus. Shows that whilst Cyclonus is dependent on Galvatron, that relationship isn't mutual.

You can tell Season 3 was more serious (in some aspects) compared to other Seasons. In Seasons 1 and 2, they would always used the word Terminate and Destroy when referring to Death. Here they straight up say Kill and Die.

Gotta give props to the creativity of these creatures. And the Zombicons from Transformers Prime sound a lot like the zombie bots in this episode.
WRONG! These are NOT Zombicons and those don't exist. These chacracters are still alive just possessed. Terrocons (Prime) are DEAD transformers brought back to life (not REAL life since their sparks are in the Allspark.) BIG DIFFERENCE CLOWN!
Ironic how Season 3 had both the highest quality animation (this episode and 'Call of the Primitives') and lowest quality animation ('Carnage in C- Minor') in the series.
I think you gotta keep the series inventive and interesting with new characters. This episode demonstrates that it's still G1 just more intensified with and with regard to seasons 1 and 2 this makes season 3 great and the core of what the transformers have been in for millions of cybertron years.
History would disagree with you. The most successful shows and franchises kept their core cast and themes. Adding new casts (who were typically disposable) and minor story arcs is what drove them. Replacing cast members usually resulted in the show or franchise plummetting. The Power Rangers are an exception to this but it was due to insightfulness but the management greed to keep the cast pay low and employees disposable. It wasn't really until Game of Thrones that people began to accept character death and replacement as part of the franchise experience. Hasbro damn near killed off their own toyline and cartoon series with the death of Prime. Seban took the Hasbro approach to move product. Devoid of pushing toy as a profit motive both TFs and PRs could've both enjoy longevity with their core cast. The problem with S1 and S2 was that there was too much focus around Prime and Megz and the stories were boring, fast-paced, and incoherent. Some of that was fixed with S3 but they also replaced the characters ATST. You ended up with a mixed bag.

Somehow I missed this episode when I was a kid. Really cool I got to see a “ new episode” now that I’m in my late 30s. Made me almost forget how old I am
So many horror elements. I was totally unprepared for the freakout I got from this when I was a little kid. (5 or 6 at the time.)
I still think this is probably the darkest of all U.S. Transformers episodes. Yes, despite Dark Awakening: the ending was oddly optimistic with and despite Optimus' courageous death. Kinda like Star Trek II in that regard, he died so the Autobots could live: another death and life thing. I always wondered if that inspired the episode in some way.
I dunno. Dark Awakening literally gave me nightmares. The idea that my hero, Optimus, was ripping apart and his mind was distorted honestly freaked me out, and I still feel a little dirty watching that episode now, and I'm almost 40 years old. Dweller feels dark, sure, but fun, and everybody is OK at the end. I liken it more to Call of the Primatives or Return of Optimus Prime - 'all the regulars get killed / transformed by plot X monster / virus, changing colour as they go.' All three stories have a lot in common in terms of structure.
That said all three are strong showings for Galvatron (even Primatives, for his cameo, he's great!). So I'm on board.

True for Ratbat. Technically everybody is dying throughout though. I only watched Primitives a few nights ago and I'm always shocked by Ratbat being chomped on.
Better question. In that episode it does appear that all the animal based TFs are there... except Laserbeak and Buzzsaw. Where be they? We know Laserbeak is still around, and Buzzsaw is around in Headmasters...
A fantastic and brilliant manner of incorporating vampirism into the TF universe! And the icing on the cake is that the episode was written by the great Paul Dini himself! 👏
Rip to the quints who was killed by the dweller
Given that he can just shrug off one of the most dangerous creatures in the cartoon, this episode is fine example of just how frickin powerful Mega... Galvatron just is.
It's about the only time Cartoon Galvatron gets close to the levels of badass Marvel Galvatron had.
This is one of my favorite episodes. The music in Season 3 was incredible!!

I think they did off scene on Cybertron but they probably cut his memory.might of even gave him tech back then, like the one he used to control unsuspecting cybertronians back then.
@@c.glazercrush3994 Except... that never ever happens. Isn't even hinted to happen. The Quintessons are looking for Transformers in the Movie and Five Faces of Darkness, they explicitly aren't dealing with any since their sole purpose is to find and pick off any stragglers or go on a kidnap session (like Five Faces). If they had encountered Megatron, they would have found him 'guilty or innocent'... Not dealt with him.
The only reason they start to deal with other races, including the Decepticons, is because the Autobots destroy Quintessa. Then it's explicit that they change their tactics up to get ahold of Cybertron again.
And in terms of Megatron meeting them... Megatron is shown to cavort with alien beings for mutual gain, as seen on Monacus. So he would possibly have been more cordial than Galvatron but it would have likely gone the same way (mutual betrayal etc.).

The Skarkticons were probably created after the Quintessons were exiled off of Cybertron and after the Autobots became Transformers. probably got the idea from them...
Soo, this is where they got the idea of turning (Transformers:Prime) Black-Arachnia into an energon vampire.
Not Black Arachnia, it was Airachnid. Similar characters, but entirely different while BA was more of an anti hero, Airachnid was completely evil, and so good at it. Airachnid was inspired in Black Arachnia though, and I still hurt that she got a crappy figure instead of a really good one like the rest of the characters. What's even weirder is that no 3rd Party company has made justice into making a great 3rd party version of the character.

My favorit episode of season 3, The gloom and terror of the Energy leech combined with "The Sweeps" theme creates a perfect atmosphere. "I don't know what thing is back in the tunnel but even if it gets me, I'll die with the satisfaction of knowing the universe will have 2 more Autobots to Mourne!"
