Explainer | NRIs to Vote from 8 Countries: But is EC Breaking Its Own Rules?

- The Election Commission of India (EC) wants to help NRIs (Non-Resident Indians) to vote in Indian elections, which is a good idea. It will be tried as a pilot project in 2021 across eight countries - USA, UAE, Australia, Canada, UK, Malaysia, Kenya, and Singapore.
There are reportedly 1 crore NRIs across the world, of which roughly 60 lakh are eligible to vote. But there is a problem.
The procedure suggested by the EC for NRIs to vote via ballot papers will not happen in the presence of polling agents representing political parties. And this is a violation of The Representation of The People Act, 1951 and The Conduct of Election Rules, 1961.

EC website does not even open up if you are outside of india, unless you have a particular type of VPN.
Valid points made and these acts need to be amended so that when NRIs vote, then it's a free and fair election.

As BJP base is eroding in the country they are roping in rich Gujarati, Marwadi NRI who favour BJP.
That's why no middle east countries are included where the majority of NRI are below middle class.

Yes, they contribute to economy. But, they don't care much about the state of country. Most of them support ruling government.
@@prithisheric this is an honest mistake that a lot of people make to think that most people support BJP, which is not true. They(BJP) r projecting to us that the people loves them, but actually it's not. They're just few hand full of people, not in the majority. Don't let online bots and trolls make u believe that. And by the way those NRI's you're talking about, who probably went for HOWDY MODI & chanted for him, later those same NRI's were chanting against him while protesting for scrapping CAA, NRC & NPR.
