Back in 1989 I knew a man who worm farmed on a large scale. I was just 20 years old and fascinated. He had several large beds made of wood. He would go and get large loads of horse green horse manure and fill these beds. Then he would lay a waterhose in there and flood them and green water would flood out. After the water began to clear somewhat he would stop and let it drain. After it drains enough so it was safe for the worms he would add worms. He said it was necessary to wash out the manure and remove some of the green water so it wasn't to hot for them. This man was named Don Hogan, and he lived in Oakhurst Texas. He provided worms for bait stores in surrounding areas and even different counties. He really knew what he was doing. He had a worm caster that when ready he would shovel the worms and castings in to the caster. It was a big barrel shapped caster that lay horizontally and had a electric motor and turned slowly. The worms would not fall through the tinny holes but the fine castings fell through in to a wheelbarrow. The caster was made of rabbit wire with tiny square holes. These castings could be used straight to grow about anything. We grew strawberries in them that were almost as big as a apple. They did not compact either. It was incredible soil and fertilizer. (As a after note which is completely off topic but interesting....this man was the biological father of famous pop singer and Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith of Mexia Texas.)
@d yes its was really hard on her Dad. She has a little brother also who is grown now of course. His name was Donnie. And also a younger sister named Donna who I dated for a while.
Thank you!! Ive been researching this for a while. Just watching 3 of your videos Ive learned more and gained more confidence than you can ever imagine. Youve inspired me. Thank you. 😊🙃😊🙃😊🙃☮
Much appreciated! I have spent about 2 months breeding up worms (I estimate i now have 14K worms) and looking to expand into bath tubs but wasn't sure how i would separate the worms and the worm castings. This video is fantastic, thanks a bunch mate *subscribed*. Perth, Australia.
I like the compost tea "recipe" particularly well. I didn't know you could "make" worm tea. I thought you could only collect it from the offdrain from the worm bin. Nice to know it can be multiplied by 24 hours of aeration to really multiply the microbes. Thanks for the tip.
Great way to make worm castings. I have an old very heavy bathtub in the yard I can use for this project. Never made work castings before. Looking forward to doing this come spring.
Just had to subscribe. Been composting for years. Always wanted to start using worms to speed things up. This inspires me to try it. Thanks for the great video.
I have a 2'x4' raised bed that I turned into a worm bin. Put it under a massive ficus tree so shaded all day. I live in Phx AZ area, and the worms did fine in summer.
Another fantastic video my friend, you sure have some beautiful castings. I'm looking for an old bath to start a new worry. Thanx for posting, all the best x.
I've found if I put my brick of coir in a bin and fill it a bit with water and let the coir absorbed a small amount, I can flip the block and shave off the soft part. I keep filling and flipping. Works a treat .
I've got 3 tubs of worms and a few other bins and In the last 4 years I have only been able 2 Collect 4 gallons of castings I love it so much just wish I could get more maybe another 30 years I'll be able 2 achieve 100lb of worm castings : )
Thank you for wonderful video. Enjoyed watching it. Very informative. Please post the link of your commercial sprayer in your video description. It will be very useful to me. Thanks
Nice castings. I have four indoor bins. One with India Blue worms, one with African Nightcrawlers and two with Red Wigglers. What type of worms are you using? Also do you have any issues with the weather (too cold too hot and rain) or critters trying to get into your outdoor worm tub? It's a great idea for an old tub. 👍😃👍
Thank you for sharing! I'd love a video about your daily chores. Like feeding the chicken, weeding, maybe what you eat, or if you're doing any home/garden improvements.
Thanks man. You're doing something good and I appreciate seeing it and learning all I can. I had trouble hearing you here and there but small changed compared. Thanks.
another great video! I have two bins of worms. one is red wigglers and the other is my original earth worms. I'm upgrading to a bath tub vermicompost bin. can I combine the red wigglers and earth worms in my new bin? if not, then I'm thinking I might just release the earth worms in to my garden and concentrate on the red wigglers. ty
Great video man. So happy to see some one that actually knows what they are talking about. And thanks for the tip with the cococoir i always add to much water lol
100% couldn't agree more on the compost "GOLD" LOVE THE WORMS, all types. It's what I like to call my secret formula for my compost,,,thanks for the video and solving a problem such as harvesting. All the best from Australia Marty Ware
martysgarden - Hey Marty. I was thinking of you while watching the video. I'll be getting red wigglers soon. Just brought all my little papaya trees onto back porch. I do have some worms living inside some of the outside pots that I'd put in last summer.
@@martysgarden - Hi Marty. Funny thing...a few weeks ago I threw some food scraps from my juicing into the ground by my back porch where I want to plant tomatoes. So while I was watching my grandkids, we were digging that whole area there up, looking for earthworms. When we got to the spot where I had thrown (and forgotten about) the scraps we found a BUNCH of worms in there! Woohoo. We put together a worm box until I get my wigglers, and threw them all in the box.
Thanks for this! I've had my worms in 5 gallon buckets with holes and it's a pain to harvest. Love the bedding. When I add food...do I need to add cardboard (browns) as well or is the bedding enough.
I like your set up....I am using a old fridge. I got a question to pic your mind....often when I lift the lid there are dozens of worms at the top in bunches....any idea why they never stayed in the dirt where there is lots of food.
I just use a flow-throw bin. I can just pull out the bottom tray each week and dump it, done. I store my casting in a standard garbage bin during the offseason.
Wow, does it fill up that quick?! How big is each tray, and how many worms do you have? I got mine about a month ago, and disturbed them very little for the first 2.5 weeks. They're only now getting going, so I don't know how fast they can work.
@@SolidGoldHedgehog I think the trays are rated for 15 lbs each but I'm not sure. I've never measured it. I have 3 worm towers so each one produces about 15lbs a month. I don't worry about them fully breaking down everything as it goes into a garbage pail for storage and the worms just keep going.
I have tons of coffee chaff & coffee grounds, can I raise worms in a mix of manure, table scraps & a large amount of coffee grounds? I can get supersacks 48" X 48" X 72" tall of coffee waste per week.
Hello sir I would like to see how work bin is built from the beginning I saw couple of other's videos but I feel something is missing, I would like to get the video from you. Can you able to do one for me
Hi, thanks for the vid. How long is it before you will be able to use the new part. I guess you keep it moist? I have a tower but prefer your sytem..looks way less complicated 🙂
so, why would you fill all the way with coconut bedding if you want to harvest worm castings? How do you distinguish one from another? How do you get rid of the coconut beding in the final product? How can you tell that you are harvesting castings and not only black coloured coconut bedding?
Nakamura65 oh boy, someone needs to go back to worm farming 101. I can see you either skipped that course or slept thru it all. You really need to go back to the very beginning and start over again and relearn all of the required basics

Thanks for the half and half harvesting method. I find this is the easiest way now. Blessings.

That was beatifully illustrative. Thank you for the before and after!
Thank you for such a simple process! I've watched lots of videos, and this is the one for me!
Thank you kindly. I appreciate the feedback. Cheers!
Thank you from a beginner in Australia.
When I grow in straight castings the growth is amazing. I also add charcoal too.
Thanks Dan

Really good video brother. Thank you for the knowledge
Your system makes a lot more sense than trying to filter them through a screen and not cut them in half
Fantastic video! I have an old cast iron tub we will be replacing with a standup shower. Now I know what I will do with it.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. This video was super helpful and interesting! 🌱
I have a pile of leaves in the corner of my yard that are full of worms! Leaves make great worm food I guess.
they like the carbon
Just don't use to much leaves, because they come with mites.

Nice improvements from the older harvesting video!

Great video! Some good ideas in this! We have our first worm farm now, which is a style we bought called a can-o-worms. Been fun to learn with it!!
Great video with helpful advice/ideas thanks 🌿🪱
Looks great! This is how I'm planning on harvesting from my worm bin as well. 👍
You are the freaking man, thank you
Well orchestrated video!
This video was extremely helpful and easy to understand, thank you so much!
lets see you out of that dress
Thank you for this guidance. I'm eager to get mine started this month. What concerns should we have if we live in freezing areas?

What kind of commercial pump you are using for your garden hose?
I might be immature but when those chickens ran behind you i laughed they looked like they did something and we’re running for their lives
How long does it take to harvest your castings? Do you save the worms and start over?
how long does it take to be pure castings before harvest? 3-6 months? Once you put down the food on other side wait how long?
