Man, I wish this guide was available when I started playing! Good stuff. It's important to note that abilities that come with a cost to fatigue might be fatal to use early in the game or in the absence of a Strategist general - exhausted your men are slow and have their melee attack reduced by a massive 50%. This is especially true for Headhunt/Battle Rhythm. An exeption is Berzerkers, who have a higher chance of going Berzerk and becoming Fresh the more they kill.
I had to watch heir for 2 months to understand the game. I made soo many noob moves like throwing cav in spears, sword in pikes and charge light cav into royal cataphracts
The usefulness of wedge, flying wedge, and diamond formations is to click them once your cavalry has already reached top speed. It reduces acceleration, it does NOT reduce speed or top speed. If you get your cavalry up to top speed first and then click the formation they will fall into it, thus gaining the bonuses from it, without losing anything except melee defence.
That is right, I had seen move orders like that ignored in German TOTAL WAR Let´s Plays even by more experieced gamers . So, xour input is very welcomed here dear Tactical Urban Homo. ( no it is NOT an old hat, I refer to Let´s Plays done in 2020 )
20:00 ELEPHANTS: In the good old TOTAL WAR: ROME Elephants had originally an overpowering ability. Those changes you told about had been put in into the ROME GOLD edition which became a bit more strategic by some changes the developers did regarding the battle simmulations.- of course that had it´s pros and cons for beginners and more advanced plaxers doing the TOTAL WAR games. The only thing I criticise at those decisions by the developers. They were not well brought over to the fandom base. So many fans rejected buying ROME from then on believing it haevily bugged, what of course was not the case.
Whistling shot reduces melee damage of EVERY unit they fly over. So if you are shooting from behind your own troops they will be affected too. So, move the archers into a position where they can flank the enemy and shoot the farthest target they can reach. All enemies that the arrows fly over will have their melee reduced, but so long as the arrows don't fly over your own troops they will be find. It's possible to debuff the entire enemy army with one volley if you are in the right position. It doesn't last long so if you have a little time to micro manage you can fire one volley and then switch to fire or or heavy or standard. It seems to last longer against enemies than your own troops. So if you debuff your own guys it should go away faster. I haven't done any testing on this. It's just my observation in battle which is usually pretty hectic.
I know... year and a half ago. But I was pretty sure Flying Wedge was only suppose to be used to break through weakened lines and opening a gap. Not handy for mobility or attacking a unit specifically, just tactical advantage splitting up opposing forces or allowing allied forces an entry point. So its useful in its own way.
Will you eventually get to faction and army composition picking? What factors to think of mainly. Or basic to advanced manovuers on creating gaps in enemy lines
Regarding the wedge-formations on cavalry: The wedge formation is something I find very useful, you move your cav around without it and generally don't put them into wedge unless you're about to get a clean charge. When that happens just throw them into wedge real quick, get the higher charge bonus in, kill more men, take them out of wedge again and retreat. This is especially useful for cycle-charging. Unfortunately it requires a bit of micro, but that's just a matter of practice.
I'm fairly certain whistling shot is basically the definition of a glass cannon, I mean if you can use it on some high value units to wreck them with other cheaper units it might be worth it. Except I've never seen anyone be able to use whistling shot without friendly fire
Great video man. Is there anything special to know about the abilities you didn't mention like rapid advance, shield screen, Draco, frenzied charge, heavy shot, precision shot and cavalry counter tactics? Is there anything different to consider using flaming shot etc with javelins as opposed to arrows? Finally what about artillery ammunitions? They worthwhile?
On the different special abilities and formations that units can have. 1:03 Unit abilities.what is the difference between melee attack and weapon damage? 6:50 General types and abilities 12:30 Other units that have special abilities e.g cataphracts unfinished....got bored
3:52 Again for German speakers: JAVELIN and JAVELIN- ATTACK; Javelin = Pilum, also ein römischer Speer wie aus Asterix Just to improve the general understandabilty, since JAVELIN is no word cmming up in Foreign English Classes in Germany at least not commenly.. 7:38 STRATEGIST also exists in the predecssor games but there as a commen attribut to a General gained with experience or comming up with it. As in MEDIEVAL 2 KINGDOMS. In the CRUSADE Richard Lionhart had this ability from the start to relly his troops again after a hard fight. FUN FACT: SLIng sHots and HAMMERS were weapons dating back to Bronze age when swords and axis were braking more easily and lost faster their cutting ecge. JUst SORRY that you did not aditional educational valuable intros to this game. THEY ARE DOWNRIGHT PERFECT !!!!!

They get a reduction in reload skill and move slower, which can be massive when kiting.

Paranaue Da Silva ok how did u not know thar spear is dangerus to cav? Lol
Ilir Faci I was noob... I didnt play the prologue, i didnt read the advisor

If you're into microing, go for it. If you're a generic player, don't use it.

Parthia needs a "Surena" special ability. Surena from Carrhae so all missile units get like 25% faster reload and extra ammo.
I've had this game for ages, and yet I'm learning so much from these! Great stuff :)
Great part 2 - I am finding these very useful and am looking forward to the next!
Woooo yeah got a cameo in a heir video at 4:42 Yeah

Heir has some videos that highlight different things about factions. Look for his videos titled "Faction Focus." This may help! :)
Very insighttful and helpful for new players to get into Rome 2. Thank you Heir ^^!

Damn you have great vids! Keep up with the good work Heir! Thanks a lot!
Love your video! I'm getting better at it everyday

i wishe everyone did the guides like these! ;) good job
What about formations such as Roman legion formations, oblique order, and others as such?
Like your vids and guides. Good stuff.
im tarting to play the game so I appreciate the video, thanks
An idea for next episode: explain the stats and what is a good stat for mainline units.
I think it would be even greater if you could show the effect of each ability like you do with the Roman troops

What does the "push" general ability do?
will you be playing campaign asswell?
Look in his channel he has just finished macedon campaign and he is finishing athens
Paranaue Da Silva in the guide
TheAnangrycharizard I dont know, he may do a video explaning the buidings, army stances, mercenaries, cultures and diplomacy.
so the troops can only move in straight lines?
which is worst faction in your mind?
What about artillery?
How do you have so many playable factions in custom battle? I have most of the dlc except the big one. Do you have to beat the main campaign?
No any faction you own is unlocked without having to beat them.
HeirofCarthage thank you. I suppose I don't have the right DLC.
Thx , Helped Me out
Hey Heir, nice guides! Consider renaming the video titles to describe what you are covering :)
One thing i relized is that having a shit load of units dont win the battle
Really need a non combat guide...game is ridiculously complicated.
It's just complex, not complicated.
Once you get the hang of it you'll never look back.
heir i have total war rome 2 but it wont open up on my computer can u help me? :(
How do I buy DLCs
Hmm, what would be the most useless ability and formation?
Frenzied Charge, it basically makes them unbreakable for a bit and that's it. Any if the wedge formations aswell
The public order and army limitation is the most annoying thing in rome 2!
Well in Rome 2 it's easy to get rich and afford many full legions.
That's why they've limited the numbers of armies.
nice steam name lol
I dont have that many factions
You don't have that many DLC's
some of the factions arent worth it
Buy more dlcs
Jesus this game is complicated
