  • In today’s video I review my experience with my 2007 Honda pilot. I am the one and only owner of this vehicle. I’ve put on over 180,000 miles over the past 14 years. I will tell you the good, the bad, and the fatal flaw that this vehicle has. Honda Pilot - how to make it run forever! Should you buy a used one?

    I have a 2004 and I work on my own vehicles....i have never trusted any other vehicle more than my Honda Pilot! The weight distribution makes it A class while driving in rough weather! In the snow last season the road had been cleared properly but in the dark, I did not see a section of road that had drifted and iced over in a heavy bend on a state route. The moment before I hit the patch I "KNEW" I was going off the road but nope....glided evenly over it. This was just before i got new tires. It's elegant, beautiful, lasts forever, is a dream to work on.....i don't want any other vehicle!!! Oh and I have 5 kids, I am putting my kids in a safe vehicle. If you have the opportunity to buy a Honda Pilot do not pass it up!!!

    Ive had my 07 pilot since it was brand new. As a mechanic ive done all the work on my pilot but out of my 4 cars 3 have timing belts i use gates timing belts (aisin for toyotas) they are oem supplier good quality so far no issues with their belts. The timing job on the pilot isnt too bad to do but worth it. I just replaced the belt, water pump, and tensioners when it hit 99k back in 2017. Now i have 6 years or 70k till next belt change. I brought my kids home in the pilot when they were born now they are learning how to drive it.

      Wow - I love that about your children. Mine are 5 and 2 and I’m looking for a new-to-me vehicle. I have it narrowed down to a Toyota 4Runner, or a Pilot (preferably and ‘08 as I have heard they don’t have many issues arise). My goal is to have it until my boys are well into high school.

    06 Pilot w over 310k. Absolutely reliable. I do the timing belt service every 75k using Honda parts. Not hard at all to do. But definitely do the timing belt service early - good insurance. Also - Get the special tool for the crank bolt. Then just all the regular maintenance. Don’t forget the rear diff fluid also. It eats brakes and front lower control arm bushings. But easy and not expensive to replace every now and then. Will (hopefully) last forever. Do not fear a higher mileage one of these so long as it has been properly and proactively maintained.

      I've owned CR-V's, an Element and an HR-V. At my service department's recommendation, I change the rear diff fluid @ 30K miles minimum and more frequently, if the miles don't accumulate fast enough. It's cheap insurance. I live in a hilly rural area that does not get plowed in the winter, so not having 4WD or AWD is not an option.

    This is the TRUE reason for the timing belt breaking prematurely on these wonderful Honda Pilots……. It is the hydraulic tensioner that fails period…. The harder the vehicle is driven as in stomping the pedal then immediately letting off and hitting the brake or otherwise known as heavy city start/stop traffic…the quicker the Hydraulic tensioner begins to fail.The solution is to install a spring tensioner from the earlier 3.0 through 3.5 V-6 that was used in the 90’s. I have first hand experience in this process and luckily when mine failed the first AND … AND ….second time ( 2’nd within 10,000 miles of changing the belt and tensioner ) the engine luckily didn’t have major damage on piston/valve connecting…. Only a slight imprint of the valve on the pistons….. slight. I now have 231,000 miles on it and am still driving and will continue. Mine is the EX-L all wheel drive so the mpg is 17 overall as opposed to 20 mpg on the two wheel drive in this video.Great vehicles for people who are mechanically inclined… if not then these can be a bank account draining auto when dealing with labor costs in replacement of the belt and not knowing about the change from hydraulic to spring tensioner. Good luck to all on these.. ( side note- I’m referring to 1’st gen pilots up to 2008….. or when the change to second gen )

    Great info! I am looking at buying a 2007 Pilot 4WD from someone who bought it knew and had it meticulously maintained. Part of his offer is to change the timing belt and water pump (if the water pump stops, the belt breaks). I've owned a bunch of Honda cars in the past with timing belts and never had a problem with any of them because I always stick to the maintenance schedule. However, I did not know about the difference in quality of belts and never considered it because my Honda dealer's service department always does my maintenance. Still, this is good to know. Thanks!

    How many miles did the vehicle have when the timing belt broke? You are a little in-accurate, Honda still uses timing belts on all of their V6 engines (J35 series) literally millions of engines. Not an unreliable design, just replace at indicated interval (100k miles) and use top quality Honda or Aisin parts installed by an mechanic with lots of Honda engine experience.

    I am a Toyota person, love the, fix them, buy them, and drive them. My brother bought a Pilot from his neighbor who wanted to get rid of it as they were moving out of state. He brought to me, I did front to back, up and down service. The history showed 2 belts done in it's life, I did check the belt, removed the covers as I was replacing the power steering pump, easy access already. Looked decent and no issues. After servicing it I am thinking of getting one. I love to get a 2012 or so Highlander but they are way expensive. I can get a Pilot for 30% cheaper.

    • @checkitout2468
      @checkitout2468  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, that’s a tough one. Saving 30% is pretty significant. If I was to buy another pilot, I would be absolutely certain that the timing belt was done with an OEM kit preferably at the dealership. Also, Honda are very picky about having certain fluids. Transmission, power, steering, and coolant fluids must be Honda.
      Why Honda, in all their wisdom, cannot make a six cylinder engine that is either timing chain or non-interference is beyond me.
      As the years progress, I feel like honda has put less effort into the reliability aspect, while toyota is still nearly as reliable as they’ve always been.
      Honda with proper service 200,000 miles, Toyota with proper service intervals 350+.
      Good luck with it, let us know what you get.

    That isn’t a flaw! Just replace the belt every 100,000 miles and you’ll never have a problem! Timing chains can and do cause problems too when they stretch and the tensioners wear out as they do.

    Am looking to purchase a 2005 Pilot after loving the test drive on a used car lot. I currently have a 2002 CRV purchased new, and it’s been great!!
    But in the last 3 yrs I’ve put in 3000+$ for things like a starter=1200$(ridiculous labor charge due to where it’s located 😣) 1000$ for a part to pass smog, 200$ for a Pcv valve that was leaking oil onto the ground, 200$ brake pads etc. normal things for a20 yr old vehicle. The mechanic said I also had quite a few small oil leaks everywhere, but doesn’t burn oil which is great!
    The car would probably last many more miles…. I have 135,000 on it now. But I have some cash and love that Pilot I drove and it’s callin my name!…. My niece would inherit my crv ….. my concern is that the Pilot I like is a 2005 that when I googled that model year they said that year ranked the worst of the 1st gen and I may encounter a lot of extremely costly repairs, being transmission etc. After viewing this video on the 2007 having troubles I’m really hesitant to get the 2005 even more!
    The service records are great, everything you said to do for preventative, the 1 owner did.
    It has 127,000 mi and body paint all great, interior too, everything works. The lot owner got from auction but before it was for sale he had some inspections service done and the CARFAX report states the steering gear was replaced =700$
    Belt replaced at 75,000 mi transmission fluid flush , oil and filter changes power steering fluid cleaned …. All fluids upkept at regular intervals thru to date of sale all done.
    But I’m still Leary that I may be buying more than I can handle, and maybe I’d be better off with a non interference engine just in case??
    Looking at Lexus RX 2005-7 models with at non interference engines are safer if belt breaks?
    What do you think?? Any help comments are welcome 🤲

      This may be too late for your question as hopefully you bought the pilot already...but I got my 2004 pilot with 170,000 miles on it everyone thought I was nuts. Guess what, she's at 346,000 miles now lol. All I've done is a starter and and alternator on it. Timing belts of course but that's it. 👌 excellent vehicle. I just wish the mpg was better.

      @@kirkwilson5900 Hi thx so much for replying!! I actually purchased a 2005 Lexus Rx 330 on New yrs day 22. It had 92,000 mi and was like brand new interior/ exterior flawless! The owner really babied it and the only thing I had their mechanic do is the timing belt and and brake pads and had the dealer take it off the price.
      Have had it 8 mon now and it purrs like a kitten, and for being a 6 acyl it consistently gets 20 city and 25 highway. Sure that’s not the very best, but I fill up a lot less than I did with my 4 acyl CRV.
      I have to say that I missed my honda so badly and still do even though this car is such a smooth comfortable ride , and I sometimes wonder if that honda would have gone to 300+mi and maybe I should have waited.
      Im so happy your Pilot has lasted so well, I’m sure it will go to 500+ if you service it well☺️
      I really loved that pilot I test drove that day, but I believe this lexus will be as reliable... It’s a Toyota really, and I hope it will not let me down.
      I had my crv for 20 yrs, and I felt at one with it, like a good relationship, I hope this car with prove to be as loyal, because I’m not into turning cars over, I can find better ways to spend my hard earned $. Enjoy your Pilot!!🌼

    • @Merry95Berry
      @Merry95Berry 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s silly. When you change them with quality parts at the specified intervals, you will never have a problem. My interference VW went 275k before I got tired of it and sold it. My interference Honda has over 250k miles on it. It’s a non-issue. Timing chains might last forever but the plastic guides won’t, and there’s no telling when they might go. See: Audi 2.0TSI engine. Those go out before a belt would, and is so much costlier to repair than a belt. Also when buying used, you’re hoping the previous owner of a timing chain car kept up with oil changes and made sure it was always full. Being neglectful with maintenance will cause premature wear to a chain and cause it to stretch. Or it might outlive every single other component on the vehicle. There’s no be-all, end-all answer to the belt vs chain argument. They each have their pros and cons.

    When I bought my 07 pilot with 131k miles, maintenance record indicated no timing belt change. At the moment I knew next to nothing about cars but my friend's dad drove a lot of hondas, some with V6 engines and he stressed this to me multiple times, made it very clear to me that the engine will destroy itself if I don't spend the money to service the belt immediately. I was very lucky to have someone tell me that. Went to replace timing belt/pulleys/water pump and the car runs like a dream. Will do so again immediately after 60k miles like a ritual. Many people don't like the looks of small rims and large tires but I love it for how comfortable it rides. It's like riding on bouncy waves. We have a 2007 Pilot with "leather" seats also and we've enjoyed it so far. I didn't realize there not real leather. Looked real to me to be honest.
    It has currently around 255,000 miles on it and runs like a top and everything still works fine. Never really thought of the timing belt as the weak link but your right having a timing belt on an interference engine can is a recipe for disaster. Maybe what they call planned obsolescence by Honda. Not good business at all.
    We recently replaced our as the belt hadn't been changed in over 120,000 miles. We lived in fear that it could break at any time instantly turning it into a huge yard ornament lol. I did it myself as I have a hard time trusting mechanics to do anything on my vehicles especially something that expensive and important. The funny thing was the belt looked brand new. I thought this thing could've gone for another 100,000 miles with it. But I don't know rubber that well maybe they can look fine but actually be on their way out.
    One problem we had is the key lost signal to the computer security system that would have required us to have it towed to the dealership where they would reprogram the key. I ended up bypassing the security system altogether by running power directly to the fuel pump by an add-on fuse in the fuse box so when the car's on the pumps on. Works great.
    And then there's the oil leak out of the front valve cover that's a huge pain to replace. I haven't fixed it yet. It's one of those kinda deals that's annoying but you can live with it nonetheless.
    Anyways if you've read this far I enjoyed the video!

      I just recently did my own timing belt kit replacement job...water pump, tensioners, bearings, etc..all the stuff that needed to be changed while having it all apart. Next I did the valve cover gasket replacement job, you are correct, it is a pain. To me it seemed more difficult than the timing belt. The oil was leaking out of the front cover mainly towards the drivers side. While having the valve covers off I also adjusted the valves. The exhaust valves were the only ones, on my Pilot, that were out of spec. I was relieved that the backside valves (firewall end) were not out of adjustment because they are nearly impossible to adjust because there is so little space to get the feeler gauge in to them and the adjusting wrench at the same time along with seeing them while holding a little mirror to see what you are doing. Before changing the valve cover gaskets my check engine light was on and I knew the code was telling me it needed a valve adjustment. According to the video I watched, the mechanic in the video did mention that the exhaust valves on the front are ones that need adjusting most of the time. I was relieved that it was only the front exhaust valves that needed adjustment because they were truly very easy to adjust. When I put it all back together and cranked it up the light didn't go off right away as the Pilot's computer had to cycle through every system, being that I had the battery disconnected for the two days I was working on it. But after the two days the engine light cleared and it has been running smoother than ever. My Pilot is 2006 with the J35Z1 engine and it has roughly 260,000 miles on it and is running very good. I am in the process of replacing the two cooling fans because one of them I have noticed a slight wobble with the propeller blade indicating that the bearings or bushings in the cooling motor are about die....I did use AISIN Timing Belt Kit which is who makes genuine Honda parts for Honda but I did use Gates gasket kit for the valve cover job. I do love my Pilot and I believe it will make it to 500,000 miles if monitored and maintained correctly....Nearly every repair / maintenance I did on the Pilot I learned / watched from youtube....Sorry so long but I hope this will encourage others who own a Honda Pilot to maintain these great vehicles...I don't like paying a bank every month just to own a car when mine is paid for and is fairly easy to keep up with...

    • @jwwilliams
      @jwwilliams 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LR-jr5hi Oh, wow, your quite the do-it-yourselfer! Anybody that would tackle that valve cover gasket or that timing belt is above average in that area in my opinion.
      I'm curious, did your engine make a slight ticking sound before adjusting the valves? Ours has since we bought it at 130k. It has around 255k on it currently. It's not bad but I've always wondered if it's the valves out of adjustment.
      We've also always had a check engine light on. The codes point towards O2 sensor's though not valve clearance issues.
      I'm currently in the process of replacing the clutch and slave cylinder in my little 97' Ford Ranger. It's turning out to be more of a pain than the timing belt was. The transmission pulled out fine but getting it back in is turned out to be a real challenge. I've found some tricks of youtube I will be trying on my next attempt, hopefully, they will work. If not I will be loading all the parts in the back of it and towing it to a shop lol.
      Good job on the Pilot. I hope it lasts you up to that 500k mark your hoping for.

      Nah, not planned obsolescence...Honda built the 06-08 Pilots to last...they took care of the tranny issues and most of the gremlins that happened with the 03-05. The most serious thing that goes wrong with the 03-08 Pilots is rear subframe mount rust...it's a stupid design cuz the unibody rail that the subframe mounts to isn't 100% enclosed, so the shit they put on the roads in the winter gets up in there and rusts the mount out...to fix it correctly costs around 3 stacks. I recommend anyone reading this to buy a can of Fluidfilm which is available at Autozone or Lowes, and spray a generous amount on the outside of the mount as well as inside the mount. This is a notorious issue that alot of people don't know about...I'm a dealer that sees Pilots all the time at the auctions with these rear subframe mounts all but gone its always the rear driver side mount that's near the spare tire.
