    (Irrelevant question) Why do jewelers use metal tweezers to hold and show off diamonds? I'd feel like silicone tipped tweezers would do a better job.

    • @illusionarydust

    • @daggan1394
      @daggan1394 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1590

      There’s not really one reason, but a few things to note are silicone “looks” cheaper than stainless steel. Also, light reflects off the steel better, allowing more light to bounce around the diamond allowing it to sparkle. Also they’re just more durable, the last thing you’d want is to show off a diamond in a worn down, or scuffed material

    So as a person who is a certified jeweler I could tell just by the look of the metal, don't get me wrong, I would still test it. However, that looked to be white gold and not your standard yellow, white gold will leave a silver colored scratch as it is a silver color.

    • @Jason2425able
      @Jason2425able 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Since you are a certified jeweler then I'm guessing you might have thought something else. I have a thought they were scammed by the jeweler that they bought the ring from. 2 key things jump out to me. It is gold but the jeweler knowingly printed the wrong thing on the band. I think that the ring is only 10k and not 14k. Since in the U.S. you can only sell as low as 10k and still be considered gold. Real simple to stamp the wrong thing. If it is 10k it should be stamped 414 instead of 585. Of course I'm talking about the purity. But please correct me if I messed anything up.

    Chemist here, I’m pretty sure if the ring LOOKS SILVER it isn’t GOLD! You literally held a silver colored ring in your hands and said “is it gold?” There would be no reason to plate gold with silver, that would be a waste of gold due to silver being relatively common in comparison, you really don’t need to do these tests unless they used something like pyrite or brass plating or some other gold color alloy, yes there is white colored gold alloys, but that would be a fairly uncommon use of gold because for one; silver would look similar, and two; most people want to know and show off that it’s gold instead of being unsure of what it’s made of

    • @lolog52

      It's that way
      Also on clean skin without any products holding it a certain amount of time till you sweat a little works
      But inversely to the makeup one (also any foundation+compact powder should work) . On bare skin the reaction with sweat shouldn't leave any mark or tarnish on the piece but if black or green appear it's fake 🤥

    Scratch testing on a pad like that shown in the video is not always a good idea. It can deform the jewelry and remove gold from the jewelry. While this is an accurate method testing it is not practical. This why many jewelry stores, pawnshops, gold dealers, etc. use a laser precious metals tester to ensure not only the composition of the metal but the percentage (10k,14k,18k,22k,24k) as well.

    • @Jason2425able

      The thing is since it is marked 585 or 14k it's probably 10k but the jewler scammed them by putting that mark on it. If it is 10k it should be marked with 414. Whis is the purity. On a side note 10k is the smallest available percentage you can sell in America and still call it gold. Also since the acid testing only goes down to 14k in solution of course it's going to look fake.
