Myself I could not stand peat at the beginning of my Whisky journey. For example I got Highland Park 12 as a gateway to peat and found it overwhelming at that time. Regrouped and went to Oban 14 and was able to enjoy it even though I found it very peated which of course it isn't. Johnny Walker Green 15 was next for me and by the time those two bottles were gone was able to sort of enjoy the HP 12. Even after those bottles when I got Ledaig 10 it was just a phenolic bomb that numbed my mouth like a visit to the dentist. Took a long time to get past this but the abuse was worth it when I could finally fall in love with Port Charlotte 10, Laphroaog 10 cs Ardbeg Ugiedail and others. Think Benromach 10 would also be a good entry for peat as well. Cheers
Nice Choice. My favorites in your list are the Benromach and the Balvenie. Now I wait for your list with peated drams for the more experienced Whisky drinker. Cheers, Mate.
Lovely! Highland Park was the "gateway drug" in to peat for me, and remains the number 1 Distillery for me. For a beginner I would reccommend the 15 year old or perhaps the 16. Very nicely balanced and nice sweetness. 12 maybe too, but the current 12 is a bit underwhelmin if you ever tried the older releases. Yesterday I just happened to find Octomore 8.2 and 9.2 in a tax free among the later releases! Only one of each were found somewhere in the back of the warehouse under a light dust coating. Sold to me for original price of 130 each. How unlucky for me 😁
Another great presentation. If only this was widely available I would say Longrow ( gold as in the writing on the packaging ) Sweet, smoke and peat, will not blow you're head off, just a great easy dram. Take care great work.
A very nice selection. The only bottle I'd add would be Compass Box The Peat Monster, which is actually less smokey than the name implies. Springbank 10 would be another, but it's pretty scarce & ridiculously expensive these days ✌️
I recommend a tasting of a weak peated like HP 12 or Benromach 10 together with a strong peat like Laphroaig 10. Problem with starting with weak peat is that you do not even have a concept of what "peat" is. From others' tasting notes like smoke, barbeque, iodine, it is hard to picture in terms of taste. When i started my journey into peat with Benromach 10, i could not even taste any peat. Now having tasted many Ardbergs, PC, LP and Caol Ila, i can really distinguish the subtle peat along with the speyside character of Benromach.
Nice rundown of peaty whiskies MA and a solid list. Lagavulin 16 would be another good addition to this list IMO. Once you start with this list, I suspect your palate and curiosity will drag you toward the likes of Ardbeg, Laphroaig etc.
@@MaltActivist btw I meant it for the new enthusiasts as I know you're way further down the scotch journey and your take on these is always apprecitated!
Another great video with a Very interesting list. I haven't really tried any of these. My 2005 Peat Smoke is very peaty, almost Caol Ila level. I would reach for that if I wanted a clean 46% Islay. But the Double Black....that is the gateway. Totally.
Okay. I currently have JW Black on my shelf. I got started on peat with Highland Park Einar. It's the 'hint of peat' I've been looking for. I gotta try the JW Double Black. And, Bowmore 15 sounds like good stuff. I have a bottle of Benromach 15 that is my current favorite and a decent contender to replace HP Einar. I have a winner. It's prolly not included here because it's price point is a mite higher. I have not tried the Benromach 10; I haven't been able to get my hands on it. It is on order, so I'll see how it competes with its own 15 when it comes through. I'm not going to even look for the Balvenie Week; it won't be available. I think the HP Viking Park lacks the umph of Einar. It wimped out and I had to step over to Benromach 15 to once again realize the 'lilting hint of peat smoke'. I think I'm gonna be real happy with Benromach.
A good list video 👍. Suppose my first experience with peat was Johnny Walker 12 black label. On the single malt side though I remember my first three peated malts (in order) were Laphraiog 10, Ardbeg 10 and Laga 16. Out of the three I only now by Ardbeg 10. A fun and interesting video, slàinte.

When I have friends over who want to "learn about this whisky thing" I tend to start them on HP12. It is a little bit of everything but nothing is super intense and it is in a low ABV package so I can let them sit with it and then ask what they notice and taste, what they like and dislike, etc. From that I have a huge amount of information to guide them towards other whisky's. Love, hate, or don't notice the smoke? Notice the red fruits from the sherry cask? Are those good or cloying? Alcohol punch or tastes watery? etc.

That's quite a journey. Glad you made it through the other side.
Good list. In particular, The HP 12. It had a lovely smoke with no ash taste and tons of sweetness.
Agreed!
This is exactly the vid I was looking for. Thanks.

@@MaltActivist That's more like it! At the moment I have a heavily peated Kilkerran in my glas. Also not bad!

Loving the new HP CS that come in the jute bag. Good find o the Octomore!
I jumped head-first into the world of peat with a Laphroaig 13yo Cadenhead in the early 90's and it was love at first taste!
Can't go wrong with a Laphroaig by Cadenhead!
