  • Welder Repair Adjusting the High Frequency Contacts. Does the ARC on your TIG Welder sometimes not start or maybe when you press the trigger all you hear is a buzzing sound from inside the welder. It could be a very simple and easy fix! Today I'm going to show you how I inspect, clean and adjust the high frequency contacts inside a high frequency TIG Welder and get it running new again.
    This video is for entertainment purposes only. There are capacitors inside the case that store energy when the unit is unplugged. You can be electrocuted and die even if the unit is unplugged. Do not open the case. Take it to a professional.

    You just saved me from a lot of irritation!!!
    Adjusted the spark gap, nice and humming again.
    Also replaced the broken gas valve as I was in it.
    Works like a new one again.
    That for a 20 year old Chinese tig welder, woohoo!
    Starts from over a cm now!

    thank you , Mr. Lund i have been looking for a video like this cause i bought a multiproccessor machine TIG/MMA/CUT a Lotus brand over 5 years ago from pawn shop it turns on just the constant arcing at contacts , no adjustment screws and don't know the gap that it should have but if contacts are correct then its probably the flyback trnsformer or some diodes , i will continue to work on it , and this is first video i have seen about arcing between the contacts, THANK YOU SIR.

      Just be careful if you do. Make sure it's unplugged. There are capacitors inside that store thousands of volts of electricity so be carful what you touch.

    Two questions: why is there a gap and (most importantly) There Are Energized Components In There??? I thought I was safe when changing wire rolls on a mig machine, with the unit unplugged .
    Or is this just a TIG thing?

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gordon, You will find capacitors in a lot of welders (and plasma cutters) that are NOT transformer based machines. Think of a capacitor as a high pressure tank. It stores normal current at very high voltages until it is needed. An example is a start capacitor in a motor. When the switch to the motor is turned on, the capacitor dumps it's energy giving the motor the extra grunt needed to start. My mig welder is transformer based so it relies on the transformer winding rather than a capacitor. The selector switch or "taps" at the transformer are how it varies the output. This is only a theory, but I believe the high frequency contacts are to limit / protect the current to the capacitors. I haven't experimented with them but I bet closing the gap would make for a very crisp start, but would probably load the capacitor higher than it's rated voltage (shortening it's life), while increasing it would lover the voltage at the capacitors making the arc less crisp or possibly even having to make contact with the tungsten. Your mig machine should not have any exposed line voltage lugs in the cabinet where the user would change reels. You may have exposed DC terminals however that should not be energized when the machine is off. If your mig welder is very heavy, it's probably transformer based, if it's light, it's probably an inverter machine with capacitors. To my knowledge, the gap setting contacts are exclusive to high frequency tig and high frequency plasma cutters. I believe some of the more modern and more expensive machines use relays and resistors in place of the contacts.

    Where can you find the gap for your machine? Eastwood tig 200

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might have to email customer support....if they are willing to tell you. You could also "take it to someone" and have them check the current gap, clean the contact points then try setting it a couple thousands closer and try it.

  • @JOEYG707
    @JOEYG707 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You mentioned to someone else that closing the gap would create a more “crisp” start. Would that translate to a lower amp start? I’m having trouble with my Primeweld 225 starting at almost max amps then slowly dropping down to the low end when I just barely light the arc with the pedal. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is correct. It sounds like your gap is too large and machine is having a hard time jumping the gap

    • @JOEYG707
      @JOEYG707 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya turns out the contact faces were a little far and not parallel to each other. Fixed that and apparently I was getting some noise in the signal from the rest of the knobs not being in the off position. Thanks again I really appreciate it.
