some advice @rocketmoney, stop being SO strict about what people have to say in their bullet points, this ad spot sounds so scripted that it could have been a sitcom with laugh track the shopify ad spot was genuine because hank was able to actually relate to the product and the unscripted nature sold the product much better
As a french speaker i always get a kick out of the etymology segment. Makes me think of all sorts of connections I’ve never seen before between english and french words
Going just by counting the origins of words by country, it’s roughly split evenly between Old English (so Germanic origin), old French (via the Norman invasion in 1066), and Latin (through the church, and also a lot of Latin was probably snuck in via French), the rest of it is Greek (also via the church) or come from other languages (ranging from other European countries to the pre-Germanic Celtic culture of the islands), and a few words that derive from names (like occupation words. The smith in blacksmith shares an origin with the surname Smith..because Germans are both amazing and terrible at naming things) All that said, going by the words that are most commonly used, English is more Germanic than it gets credit for most of the time.
@phenethylamines it's about 1/3, but if you limit it to the most common words it's much less. Like 1/5 or so. Most of the Romance borrowings are in formal speech.
Ive never been able to watch one of these as its being premiered...you guys are awesome, just sayin. I wish you guys did more of these, they are always great!!
6 minutes in and I feel that this is one of the better tangents I've listened to. Laughing and giggling like crazy. A really great poem as well. So good rhymes. ❤
I guess for solder you have to determine whether the intermetallic bond is beyond the scope of "adhesion" because the lead and tin is actually molecularly bonded with the metal, not just stuck to it on the surface.
Yes, this. And the purpose of soldering is not only to hold the pieces together but to also form a solid electrical connection. To me, its much more than glue.
Lord knows I’m not either but I’ll be bottled as glue if the tangent team don’t do a lot to make them kinda entertaining😂 I only skip them most of the time instead of all of the time!
I remember at the National Gallery of Victoria I was able to witness Basse Stittgen’s record made from cow blood, which played the the sound of a cow's heartbeat.
There is a pretty significant difference between gluing and welding. While gluing, you're applying a stuff that does the sticking together, whereas welding is selectively melting & joining two objects until they become the same singular object. By that definition, solder and other braising materials are a type of hot glue, whereas welding stock is not. Incidentally, you don't necessarily need a super hot plasma torch to do welding. You can weld plastics together as well, for example, and some substances (confusingly often also called 'glues') are essentially just solvents that end up welding sometimes even very different materials together before drying, essentially forming an alloy along the seam.
I like this! So a glue holds things together, whereas a weld is where the things are mixed at the seam and are literally part of one another. Maybe “glue” could expand to include substances which weld materials chemically? 🤔 Also, I need these kinds of glues for 3D printing… I’m not sure that CA glue actually welds plastics, which I used to think it did. But it is always the weak part of my joints 😢
One sort-of use of blood glue: I visited an old frontier-era log cabin with what looked like a concrete floor. According to the curator, it was made by spilling ox blood onto raw dirt, tamping down and drying the resulting blood-mud. Perhaps sawdust or straw was added as well?
As you were talking about the blood glue being like bakelite, I decided I really want a blood glue fountain pen, much like Hank wants a blood glue record.
6:13 oof that hurt welding does use some filler but the point is to fuse the two pieces of metal together not to use the filler to bond the two. I love the show but I had to point that one out, y’all do a great job and I love that y’all have fun doing it.
I HOPE someone commented here already. Soldering is NOT welding! These are very different. Welding is using the SAME metal or alloy, melting the edges of two pieces, adding extra metal as needed, flowing the melted metal together and letting it cool to solid again. Soldering and brazing melt a low melting alloy to allow it to flow around SOLID metals and then cool to a solid to hopefully hold them together. The pieces being joined are NOT melted themselves, unlike in welding where they are. So... is welding GLUE? I would say not. Take two pieces of some plastic and melt the edges of them together. That is NOT gluing, that is welding.
There's no glue in welding, it's all melted metal as is solder, welding bonds by melting the filler material and the workpieces together, the filler material doesn't adhere the two workpieces together it becomes part of them.
Musical instrument builders and repairers use hide and bone glues for most purposes in the trade. The different properties of the different animals glues lend themselves to the variety of bonds desirable in the various parts of instruments. It's fascinating.
Fun fact: cash on delivery does still exist, at least in Germany, and is offered regularly by online retailers. They also have the option of sending a letter postage due, though that's a bit more complicated. I do know we offer it at work under certain circumstances, and it freaks people out every single time, even the ones born in the 1920s.
I’m sure it’s part of the lore, but I feel like being mean to Ceri about Bruce Banner-who physically transforms into the Hulk-not “being” the Hulk is a bit harsh. She was so excited to know something, and then “have you ever read a comic in your life”? 😢 She took it well, but I guess it triggered old memories for me 😅 I still love you guys, and I know you love each other! Honestly wouldn’t have said something except I keep rewatching old episodes and I’ve heard this like a dozen times now 😂
I have this book i got from a random book shop about artistic ingredients like glue, paints, and primers. The book is yellowed and smells super old. It describes early processes in great detail out of various plants and animals. The book is titled "The artists's methods and materials" by Maria Bazzi with foreword by John Skeaping.
In italy we call it "colla", the exact same word used in ancient greece which is interesting. I wonder why the latin version of the word didn't stick 🤔

There used to be a glue factory close to a sewage processing plant and it would smell so bad in the summertime. Anyone from where I live will know Frank rd. and 104. Thankfully they tore the glue factory down around 15 years ago.
Welding definitely isn't glue, unless metal casting is also glue. Welding doesn't melt an adhesive to join surfaces, it melts the surfaces to fuse them and adds some more molten material to fill in the gaps.
Isn't "tape" a shortened way to say "adhesive tape"? The plastic (or other material, like cloth or paper) is the tape; it has an adhesive applied to it. Compare with "measuring tape" or "audio tape" - tape is a strip of some kind.
soldering/welding is different than glue as they chemically bond to the surface and atleast at the interface, they alloy to the surface and become part of it, welding uses the base material or adds material(ie, metal) to bond the surfaces as 1 material so they become 1 item and isnt just a surface effect, tig welding is literally a glue gun but with metal, welders will either hate or fully agree with this comment
hey, randomly..... if you guys want to colab, i would totally make a blood based record, i just dont have the musical skills to actually produce content for it!! know anyone with a record cutting machine? i'll make the record!

As a french speaker i always get a kick out of the etymology segment. Makes me think of all sorts of connections I’ve never seen before between english and french words
Linguist Bernard Cerquiglini once asserted that English was just poorly pronounced French.
@@DrewSprague1218 With some German, I assume.

I mean like 2/3 of English vocabulary is either French or Latin.
Still a Germanic language linguistically, but with lots of romance words thrown in.
@phenethylamines it's about 1/3, but if you limit it to the most common words it's much less. Like 1/5 or so. Most of the Romance borrowings are in formal speech.
Sam would be the adorable hulk, a giant hermit crab with a repurposed piece of plastic as a shell.
Ceri: That's my secret, I'm never angry.

The Indescribable Hulk.
I think there should totally be a comic about a baby hulk called The Adorable Hulk. It'd be great!
I'd be the OLD Hulk complaining about my back and how everything is too expensive. Hank would be the Multi-tasking Hulk.
I am not a fan of ad reads but if it means keeping tangents around I will not even skip them.
And the Money Dummy one was so good this week!!

Oh yes😂
