Quite the opposite. It's harder to make people laugh for 12 years straight than it is to continually shock them with offensive content. He knows what's important.
They mastered playing idiots perfectly. It takes extraordinarily bright people like them to write the satire they do and never break character in the process.
I am pretty sure Charlie was already married to the waitress, Dennis was already with the pharmaceutical woman and As for Mac and Dee, it happened relatively quickly x
I think adding devito to the show was very important to get it more noticed. However I feel the show was good enough before him and could of made it had it been noticed more in the beginning. I guess it was a blessing in disguise to not start out on the right foot.
Totally agree, it would have gone places without him if they had the finance and attention before signing him. Danny is super funny though and I won't deny that he's a great addition nonetheless.
Yeah the Network insisted a big name was added to it because the first seasons ratings weren’t great . I remember being annoyed when they brought ‘Frank ‘ in and sometimes he’s so disgusting it’s hard to watch ha but it definitely worked in the shows favour !
Agreed. For context this was a year after the writer’s strike. Royalties had to be renegotiated because there was no system in place for writers to receive residuals from streaming. It was a huge win for the artists to not be steamrolled by the industry. 11 years later it’s interesting to see how things have resolved now that the average person isn’t forced to choose between digital cable or pirating. Also the fact that Spotify is basically music now.
if I’m having a shitty day Ill watch it’s always sunny bloopers and die laughing before it’s over. I love this cast. I wish them years of productivity happiness and freedom of creativity sans the usual “Hollywood” stipulations and strangulation. I believe in Rob and I believe people like this cast are the future of “show biz”...enough with the stuffy hollyweird studio suits already...they need to GO
Since Rob McElhenney is in the entertainment industry, I sense he has a better understanding of the music industry than you and I. I'm sure he's not referring to musicians themselves but the corporate side of the industry. Also, you probably already know people are buying less and less physical copies of music. Ask your friends or family, chances are they don't buy albums at the store anymore either. The entertainment industry is finally realizing physical media is dead.
every actor of a certain age seems to have at one time or other appeared on Law and Order. Plus he's right about the money issue regarding streaming of his show. his show is a great show, i personally have it in my top three greatest only behind Curb Your Enthusiasm buts it's not on the network and because of the language that they use syndication may be a problem as well. Larry David and jerry Seinfeld both made almost a billion dollars each from Seinfeld. this year Netflix gave them another 100 million plus deal for a show that broadcast its final episode 20 years ago. Every young actor/writer/show creator regardless of how glad they are to just be working should also not be afraid to be an Artist/business person as well.
Just in case anybody is watching this video recently, they've been talking about the show "Boldy Going Nowhere" publicily for FX since 2009..... The Orville is a show that Fox and Seth MacFarlane made happen last year. I'm pretty positive the Sunny guys got fucked on this one.
The happy medium he mentions is essentially streaming services, now streaming services are used by many rewatch over and over (and over) episodes of Sunny
I know, and I was bummed, but I like how Dee continues to call him dad instead of Frank. Dennis doesn't, but Dee does. think about it, they didn't find out that frank wasn't their dad until they were in their 30's. so, it makes sense to me, and that's why I'm not as upset.

Was made aware of it by technically illegal clips on TH-cam. But it popped up on Netflix and now I'm hooked. I wonder how Rob feels about Netflix and whether he thinks it's the middle ground that he speaks of here.
for every hollywood blockbuster there are 20 indie-low budget films that aren't making a dime. artists have no motivation to make their art if they can't make a living
I find it so difficult to take them seriously as their characteristics in speech, body language and mannerisms is the same as their characters. More than any other show, its so hard to not see them as Mac Dennis Dee and Charlie.
Sure these people arent making much money from the fact that their show is easily accessed on the internet but think about people like me who arent exactly wealthy and cant afford to buy the DVD's in order to watch the episodes they missed. The older episodes they dont air much and its impossible to know when you'll be able to catch up. I think its great they have them online.
The internet definitely isn't a fad, but compared to how many people have TVs, it's nothing. Plus there will always be people who prefer watching shows on a TV set than at their computer or laptop.
When he talks about streaming, and downloading online he uses the music industry as a comparison and I don't exactly agree with that. TV suffers a lot more from streaming and downloading that the music industry does. Musician make most of their money touring, and having their music available for free adds to their ticket sales. The same can't be said for TV where most of the money comes from people actually watching the show on TV. Other than that...it's awesome to see what goes on in his head.
When he talks about downloading it sounded a bit strange, I mean they get lots of DVD sales and have got deals with TV and streaming services. I get where he's coming from but no one on the show would be struggling as he put it. Google says he has a net worth of 50 million.
"I like to say words that are unnecessary so that people think I'm clever and original. I have to disagree with him on the last question(as much as I love him) the music industry didn't collapse, if anything it showed it's true colors. Musicians just in it for the money stopped playing or didn't feel motivated enough to play, but just downloading music for free isn't making them poor. They still make a shit ton from playing venues, selling merchandise, and people still buy their albums(just not as much) I mean show me one successful well known financially struggling musician
Fuck 'em, they're only musicians anyway. I think it was great to watch that meglomaniacal cult of non-existent personality that is and was 'pop music' as an industry, and its whiny self-pitying, and nauseatingly self-important, 'stars' crash and burn out of their unwarranted status as guaranteed superwealthy.
I don't know how it was in 2009 but today, Rob's concerns in the last question are not relevant. Failure in any digital entertainment medium comes from inability to adapt to changing technology. The potential for success is exponentially greater now because of the sheer amount of exposure that is available online. That is what the music and film industry failed to grasp for so long.
Adding Danny to the show has made it so much better, his and Charlie's relationship is the funniest!

Frank as a character is great because he is the money man, that allows the gang to do more crazier stuff and in turn allows for more episodes.
