Jsjsusjs oh yeah, it is common for us to get used games so they would be cheaper, but the detail in those and in those times is that they would be really scratched up, sometimes they would work perfectly or at least smooth enough to finish the whole game and some other times they would just get stuck in the loading screen, wish you both good luck!

I first played this game in college and I played the hell out of it. I still think that Simon Templeman's performance as Kain is one of my favorites of all time. “Alas poor Nupraptor, I knew him well. Well….not really.”
The first two were great, the rest of the series feels as big of a hot mess that they made up as they went as LOST did. Convoluted would be putting it mildly. >__> Hopefully any reboot of the series wipes away everything after Blood Omen 1 and Soul Reaver 1.
Thought I'd point out the the main given reason that the circle went mad wasn't simple senility. Nupraptor went mad when Ariel was killed, and being the guardian of the pillar of the mind, his madness psychicly infected the rest of the circle. I can answer the question your title presents right away: Yes, yes it does. There are but three complaints I have: the movement system was clearly originally four directions only since ranged attacks have crisp hit-boxes in the North/South/West/East directions and stop at walls, but when used diagonally, their hit-box is about as wide as the gap between now and Legacy of Kain: Defiance's release date. The second complaint is how in the late-game, several large encounters and most bosses are best dealt with by popping barrier, using the item that grants infinite magic, equipping the Soul Reaver, and swinging away, swapping out only to keep Barrier up, re-use the infinite magic item, rinse and repeat. The final complaint is very minor, but still there; in the game, there are 100 doors that lead to goodies and such that only open during a full moon. 99 of them can be accessed whenever, namely once you have all the traversal tools at your disposal, but Moon Door number 100 is in a location you visit once and cannot go back to. In short, if that door isn't open, your only solution is to sit there and wait if you want 100% completion for secrets and such. Aside from being darker in tone in all ways, it's also different from A Link to the Past by the virtue of there being no shops or currency of any kinds, so you're not given any reason to repeatedly kill enemies. Items are found lying around in some areas, in barrels, scattered around the secret city you can only access in certain spots during certain parts of the day, and by going to an Infernal Forge and it's better to possess a normal human and send them in to be sacrificed for a full stack of the item in question. Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain rewards the player who likes to explore intelligently and thinks like a devious, savvy bastard who prefers to stack the deck in their favor, and forgoes any kind of grinding non-sense to act as progression gate-keeping.
Most of what I know and love about Legacy of Kain is the lore. The games themselves tend to be okay with the gameplay loop. I swear they need to write a novel to wrap it up. Does Kain kill the elder god? Does the lands recover from the binding of the pillars? Do the demons return to the land and start killing the humans? You know, things that sound amazing in a novel, or a game produced by Platinum Games.
I actually think it's fine as it is. Raziel's arc is concluded, and Kain's arc is concluded too, really - just not "the plot." It's like "And Justice For All." It's not about the plot.

He ended up nearly killing the being that set his fate in motion, but still has not completed his vengeance. I want to see him complete the hunt, and kill the elder god, thus completing his vengeance.
I’m still so upset that the entire series has been hanging on one giant unresolved cliffhanger since the ending of Defiance almost TWO DECADES AGO. That said, I’ve always thought the original Blood Omen was extremely ripe territory for a full-on modern 3D remake with a fully-realized world and third-person action RPG combat system.

I'm making videos of the whole series for my channel, and oh boy, running these games today is a real pain in the ass. Sometimes I get close to just launching the Playstation versions on a emulator and calling it a day. Ironically, the first Blood Omen and Defiance are the only ones that work out of the box. No modding, no messing with files at all. I was eager to see your video since the day you mentioned it on Twitter. Awesome work man, I love your videos and I love Legacy of Kain.

I sincerely hope this game gets a remake. I played it on Ps1 when I was 7. And even then I remember comparing it to A Link to the Past and thinking how cool it is but how cool it would be if it was modeled after Ocarina of Time instead. Then Oblivion came out. Then I played Fable. Then Dark Souls. Point is, I hope it gets a Resident Evil 2 style remake influenced by those styles. That, or, if they can't do it justice, then just remaster it so it's not blurry on modern TV's.
I am playing in right now on GOG, it is a fantastic nostalgia filled time. I wish they would remake this with new combat and depth. It would be cool if i could buy things from merchants when in human form and make the world more involved in kain's fall. Nosgoth itself is the real IP and should be explored.
I played this game for the first time a few years ago and surprisingly enjoyed it quite a bit. Dated, yes, but there was clearly a lot of effort and love put into it.
Eh, I'd go the RE2 route, FF7 is making a lot of unnecessary changes for the sake of not doing the same thing twice, even if the first time made history. I'd even say go the MediEvil route and do an exact 1:1 remake only adding some extra goodies while retaining all original dialogue and including the original game as an unlock.
I will never forget as a kid the voice actor's lines were so epic. I remember moving the selector repeatedly to hear him say: The Heart Of Darkness. Reputed to have been ripped from the chest of the greatest vampire to have ever existed "Janos Audron". The heart of darkness restores vampiric unlife. Life is precious "Janos" discovered as it was torn, throbbing, and bleeding from his own body. The delivery of the first game with the items and monologues was incredible with incredible writing. All the crazy stuff going on in this world and all of it believable.
Man this whole thing looks like it SLAPS. I would have been amazed at this if I had it as a kid. However, I grew up in a slightly religious household, and so all this open violence would have been a biggie no-no. Those cutscenes though, WOW. I love early 3D stuff like this, it's fucking amazing.
One of my favorite games from PS1. I HATED whenever I needed, or wanted, to change weapons or armor because the loading times were so crippling. The game was so unlike anything I had ever played, however. I literally went from FF6 (FF3-a masterpiece in it's own right) and Zelda on SNES to this and FF7. This was unreal at the time. So dark and gritty. I thought this was the pinnacle of what games could be. In a way, they were.
I played this game on a PS2 just last year and for some reason unknown to me at the time the game was dark. Turns out I was using the wrong kind of audio visual cables and it caused the game to be way darker than it should have been. Long story short... I must have been the one guy that was actually greatful for the light spell.
I rented this from a local video store that had the current systems laying out to test the games before you rented them. I ended up buying it from the rental place instead of returning it. Since they were the only place in town that sold PSX games at the time. Also... MALEK!!!!
These games kicked so much ass. I keep coming back to them every few years and it started my interest in voice acting (Always happy to hear Simon Templeman, especially when he's raving angrily). While personally I think not every line needs to be voiced (I like the approach of the old Baldur's Gate games and I don't mind reading) and not everything being voiced allows for more flexibilty for programmers, it is a shame that voice actors are so undervalued by the industry itself.
I started this game a few weeks ago but then got sidetracked, had other things to do. I should go back to it. I think I've never played a game were you actually feel like a poweful vampire. Kain can do so many things, for a game that old it's incredible. Also this comes from a time when genres weren't really defined and didn't have to follow specific codes. It's not a hack'nslash, not really an RPG or an adventure game ( a term so generic you can slap it on everything ), it's a mix of several things. The only problem is that I didn't have a console as a kid, never played Zelda and other games like these so I'm generally completely lost and I have to rely on guides. At one point I got completely stuck because I missed one little entrance which contained a power required to progress in another level 2 hours later. Good luck remembering that.

To be fair, the combat is generally better at the game's proper speed. Going by the footage here, you might be playing the GOG version unmodded, which is (for some unfathomable reason) a version of the game that runs at lower speed. If you install the fan-made OpenGL wrapper, the game runs at normal speed, though, and it's as easy as just dropping some files in the game directory and confirming the overwrites. (There's an EXE installer, but that's for installing it with the old PC version's disk image). The PS1 version, or at least the American one, also runs at normal speed, but has a lot of slight pauses for loading whenever you interact with the menus or transition between areas or anything. So the GOG version with the wrapper's the ideal way to play. (You can also get the old PC disk image, I guess, but why would you? The GOG version's the price of a sandwich.)
46:00 - One of the tents in the gypsy town *does* contain the Disguise Form, which lets you talk to humans when you get near them, but I don't think they have much to say... it's all voiced, after all, so they could only include so many lines, and there isn't really anything in the game that requires information that you can't get from either a narration icon spot or a cutscene.
57:57 - You're correct, actually, the mace's attack combo is damage hit --> stun hit. So you nail enemies with the second hit intentionally to either stun them for feeding or take them out of the fight for a bit.
1:19:00 - Nah, GOG is the only legal place to get Blood Omen unless you own a PS3 and don't mind doing the runaround to put money on a PSN account through the website and then boot up the PS3 to access its e-shop. Technically it's still possible but boy is it tedious. The GOG version only recently came out, actually, because for a while Blood Omen 1 was caught in publishing-rights limbo and the only company that had uncontested rights to release the game in any form was Sony. They must have figured all that out this year, because they finally released an updated PC version. The GOG version is pretty nice apart from the odd runs-at-a-lower-speed aspect, though, because it actually natively supports modern gamepads (and not just XInput ones).

Lol, the same thing happened to me when I reached Nupraptor's retreat. I assumed there was nothing past the save point, and got stuck for hours without knowing what to do.
my favorite thing in this game was to use the axes with the blood armor when you go back in time to fight in that war, just spinning in a circle with blood flying all over the place.. quite memorable when you're like 13 years old lol
Square has sold off the title to Enbracer Group, which also Crystal Dynamics has gone to. CD just recently unveiled a survey on what fans would like to see in a new Legacy of Kain title, so fear not. We're finally probably getting something. Hopefully that something will be worthy. Blood Omen would be legendary if it was made with the care given, and the scope given, to Witcher 3. Dude, that image overlay in Nupraptor's dungeon 🤣 I think the slow crawl up the Avernus stairs to the "Heaven" realm are more trying to emulate how high they are, leading toward the heavens, as the reverse happens with ice in that you get faster the more you walk over it.
The PC version of GOG is a bit slow, the Kain GL wrapper runs better and uses the same save game file type so no need to restart from the beginning, also the pillars choose their guardians from birth so they are screwed
Having the chaos armor, the barrier spell, and the flame sword almost feels like a cheat with how easy it makes the latter half of the game. The only wrinkle is the battle against the Legions of the Nemesis, where you want to use the mace to clobber all the humans for their blood. Hell, I barely even broke out the Soul Reaver until I faced the Unspoken.
So I started w the SR games and fell in love w them as a kid only to find out years later there was more. I've yet to play the original LOK game but have watched plenty of vids about it. It's on my bucket list as a die hard fan of this series. Honestly, this was fantastic to listen to. Your humor is low key but funny and not try hard, "did my balls drop off?" 😂 and the depth of research is great. New sub for this video and thanks!!
You can get iton your phone with an emulator.have it on PS1 but don't have time or power to play. As far as gameplay it's the best one minus the loading screens.
Considering the harsh circumstances, it really is a happy accident just how good of a sequel Soul Reaver is to Blood Omen, and how well its original angel concept and themes adapted to the vampire lore and setting established in its predecessor. Any other combination of games, developers, or creative visions would have shat the bed but Blood Omen and Soul Reaver go together like bread and butter given how well they compare and contrast.
I was pretty young but I played legacy of main blood omen on PC. It was great, but I never met anyone else who knew about it. So I thought it was pretty obscure and a one off. I was pretty stoked when I heard Simon Templeman’s voice as Kain in soul reaver. Thought I was in on some joke when I’d explain blood omen to friends.
Some of the best games ever made would be considered archaic. The graphics and sound design ages poorly, its the gameplay mechanics that determine if it will stand the test of time. Pac-Man, and Super Mario Bros being good examples of that. Legacy of kain is a wonderful series and I would love for you to go through the entire series.

I played it a while back before playing next games in the series. I'd replay it any day, it's fun and immersive game. the only one in the series I can enjoy.
I remember they had 1 copy at my local Blockbuster, always rented out, Always! Then, one magical day, the case behind the game case was there. Well, long story short, I was blown away unlike anything I had ever played. At the time it was incredible, I'd love to see a remake but they mess it up so I suppose it's better in member berries.
The worldbuilding and lore of this franchise is incredible, up there with Warhammer. Shit is just metal af. It's such a shame it's just sitting there gathering dust. If there's one series I'd actually welcome a reboot/remake, it's this one.

For its time the 1st blood omen was badass. And in my eye since i appreciate what went into building games back then. The world the story and mechanics were all awesome. Kindy had a world look of warcraft 2 but more elements of what you could do. My only hope is if theres a remake they keep it the same type of interface and world. I do love the rest of the legacy and the other interface. But all the games back then were cool.
1:20:00 Recettear, Potionomics and to a lesser extent since they also involve standard RPG adventuring in addition to sales, Tecmo-Koei's Attelier series, focus on running a shop or selling things that one crafts to others, often the character types that one can find in fantasy RPGs. It might be nice to see an open world game that plays and is presented like an Elder Scrolls game that gives the option to play a villager just trying to get by in the setting rather than being the one to save the world. It would be enough to provide gear to the local constabulary, mercenaries, militias, neighborhood watches and adventurers of a sufficient quality to allow them to properly defend the realm in which one lives (perhaps in attacks that the player character can be protected from by their customers).
Did you write this script before the acquisition of the franchise? It sure sounds like it. They are making a new one. I could swear you've acknowledged this before. This does bring up the question: what's the longest you've sat on a script for? It's pretty clear you put a lot of thought into how to humanize these. How many scripts you sitting on now waiting for Lord Susan to not fuck you over? What content could we be getting if another platform gave you more eyes without the eyesore problems? PS: If this taking like seven months or more to write is what it takes, never change man. These are always a highlight.
I played this game not so long ago, and out of all the games in the series, this is the one that DESPERATELY NEEDS a remake. And it's not like we can't see how it could be, because V rising is basically it, just get rid of the multiplayer, slap Kain’s face in and BOOM, Blood Omen remake.

It would be cool if i could buy things from merchants when in human form and make the world more involved in kain's fall. Nosgoth itself is the real IP and should be explored.
I played this game for the first time a few years ago and surprisingly enjoyed it quite a bit. Dated, yes, but there was clearly a lot of effort and love put into it.
This Franchise deserves the FF7 Remake treatment
Eh, I'd go the RE2 route, FF7 is making a lot of unnecessary changes for the sake of not doing the same thing twice, even if the first time made history.
I'd even say go the MediEvil route and do an exact 1:1 remake only adding some extra goodies while retaining all original dialogue and including the original game as an unlock.

I will never forget as a kid the voice actor's lines were so epic. I remember moving the selector repeatedly to hear him say:
The Heart Of Darkness.
Reputed to have been ripped from the chest of the greatest vampire to have ever existed "Janos Audron". The heart of darkness restores vampiric unlife. Life is precious "Janos" discovered as it was torn, throbbing, and bleeding from his own body.
The delivery of the first game with the items and monologues was incredible with incredible writing. All the crazy stuff going on in this world and all of it believable.
Man this whole thing looks like it SLAPS. I would have been amazed at this if I had it as a kid. However, I grew up in a slightly religious household, and so all this open violence would have been a biggie no-no.
Those cutscenes though, WOW. I love early 3D stuff like this, it's fucking amazing.
One of my favorite games from PS1. I HATED whenever I needed, or wanted, to change weapons or armor because the loading times were so crippling. The game was so unlike anything I had ever played, however. I literally went from FF6 (FF3-a masterpiece in it's own right) and Zelda on SNES to this and FF7. This was unreal at the time. So dark and gritty. I thought this was the pinnacle of what games could be. In a way, they were.
I played this game on a PS2 just last year and for some reason unknown to me at the time the game was dark. Turns out I was using the wrong kind of audio visual cables and it caused the game to be way darker than it should have been. Long story short... I must have been the one guy that was actually greatful for the light spell.
I rented this from a local video store that had the current systems laying out to test the games before you rented them. I ended up buying it from the rental place instead of returning it. Since they were the only place in town that sold PSX games at the time.

These games kicked so much ass. I keep coming back to them every few years and it started my interest in voice acting (Always happy to hear Simon Templeman, especially when he's raving angrily). While personally I think not every line needs to be voiced (I like the approach of the old Baldur's Gate games and I don't mind reading) and not everything being voiced allows for more flexibilty for programmers, it is a shame that voice actors are so undervalued by the industry itself.
This series was super awesome. It's sad that the final project died, because crew and cast members kept dying. 😔
I started this game a few weeks ago but then got sidetracked, had other things to do. I should go back to it.
I think I've never played a game were you actually feel like a poweful vampire. Kain can do so many things, for a game that old it's incredible.
Also this comes from a time when genres weren't really defined and didn't have to follow specific codes. It's not a hack'nslash, not really an RPG or an adventure game ( a term so generic you can slap it on everything ), it's a mix of several things.
The only problem is that I didn't have a console as a kid, never played Zelda and other games like these so I'm generally completely lost and I have to rely on guides. At one point I got completely stuck because I missed one little entrance which contained a power required to progress in another level 2 hours later. Good luck remembering that.

...Yeah. Somehow, against all odds, I did. And it was even Gex that I remember seeing him play on it.
To be fair, the combat is generally better at the game's proper speed. Going by the footage here, you might be playing the GOG version unmodded, which is (for some unfathomable reason) a version of the game that runs at lower speed. If you install the fan-made OpenGL wrapper, the game runs at normal speed, though, and it's as easy as just dropping some files in the game directory and confirming the overwrites. (There's an EXE installer, but that's for installing it with the old PC version's disk image).
The PS1 version, or at least the American one, also runs at normal speed, but has a lot of slight pauses for loading whenever you interact with the menus or transition between areas or anything. So the GOG version with the wrapper's the ideal way to play. (You can also get the old PC disk image, I guess, but why would you? The GOG version's the price of a sandwich.)
46:00 - One of the tents in the gypsy town *does* contain the Disguise Form, which lets you talk to humans when you get near them, but I don't think they have much to say... it's all voiced, after all, so they could only include so many lines, and there isn't really anything in the game that requires information that you can't get from either a narration icon spot or a cutscene.
57:57 - You're correct, actually, the mace's attack combo is damage hit --> stun hit. So you nail enemies with the second hit intentionally to either stun them for feeding or take them out of the fight for a bit.
1:19:00 - Nah, GOG is the only legal place to get Blood Omen unless you own a PS3 and don't mind doing the runaround to put money on a PSN account through the website and then boot up the PS3 to access its e-shop. Technically it's still possible but boy is it tedious.
The GOG version only recently came out, actually, because for a while Blood Omen 1 was caught in publishing-rights limbo and the only company that had uncontested rights to release the game in any form was Sony. They must have figured all that out this year, because they finally released an updated PC version. The GOG version is pretty nice apart from the odd runs-at-a-lower-speed aspect, though, because it actually natively supports modern gamepads (and not just XInput ones).

my favorite thing in this game was to use the axes with the blood armor when you go back in time to fight in that war, just spinning in a circle with blood flying all over the place.. quite memorable when you're like 13 years old lol

Square has sold off the title to Enbracer Group, which also Crystal Dynamics has gone to. CD just recently unveiled a survey on what fans would like to see in a new Legacy of Kain title, so fear not. We're finally probably getting something. Hopefully that something will be worthy. Blood Omen would be legendary if it was made with the care given, and the scope given, to Witcher 3. Dude, that image overlay in Nupraptor's dungeon 🤣 I think the slow crawl up the Avernus stairs to the "Heaven" realm are more trying to emulate how high they are, leading toward the heavens, as the reverse happens with ice in that you get faster the more you walk over it.

The PC version of GOG is a bit slow, the Kain GL wrapper runs better and uses the same save game file type so no need to restart from the beginning, also the pillars choose their guardians from birth so they are screwed
Having the chaos armor, the barrier spell, and the flame sword almost feels like a cheat with how easy it makes the latter half of the game. The only wrinkle is the battle against the Legions of the Nemesis, where you want to use the mace to clobber all the humans for their blood.
Hell, I barely even broke out the Soul Reaver until I faced the Unspoken.

So I started w the SR games and fell in love w them as a kid only to find out years later there was more. I've yet to play the original LOK game but have watched plenty of vids about it. It's on my bucket list as a die hard fan of this series. Honestly, this was fantastic to listen to. Considering the harsh circumstances, it really is a happy accident just how good of a sequel Soul Reaver is to Blood Omen, and how well its original angel concept and themes adapted to the vampire lore and setting established in its predecessor. Any other combination of games, developers, or creative visions would have shat the bed but Blood Omen and Soul Reaver go together like bread and butter given how well they compare and contrast.

I was pretty young but I played legacy of main blood omen on PC. It was great, but I never met anyone else who knew about it. So I thought it was pretty obscure and a one off. I was pretty stoked when I heard Simon Templeman’s voice as Kain in soul reaver. Thought I was in on some joke when I’d explain blood omen to friends.

Some of the best games ever made would be considered archaic. The graphics and sound design ages poorly, its the gameplay mechanics that determine if it will stand the test of time. Pac-Man, and Super Mario Bros being good examples of that. Legacy of kain is a wonderful series and I would love for you to go through the entire series.

I played it a while back before playing next games in the series. I'd replay it any day, it's fun and immersive game. the only one in the series I can enjoy.
I remember they had 1 copy at my local Blockbuster, always rented out, Always! Then, one magical day, the case behind the game case was there. Well, long story short, I was blown away unlike anything I had ever played. At the time it was incredible, I'd love to see a remake but they mess it up so I suppose it's better in member berries.

It's been an issue for the TH-cam Mortal Kombat community for years.
For its time the 1st blood omen was badass. And in my eye since i appreciate what went into building games back then. The world the story and mechanics were all awesome. Kindy had a world look of warcraft 2 but more elements of what you could do. My only hope is if theres a remake they keep it the same type of interface and world. I do love the rest of the legacy and the other interface. But all the games back then were cool.

It might be nice to see an open world game that plays and is presented like an Elder Scrolls game that gives the option to play a villager just trying to get by in the setting rather than being the one to save the world. It would be enough to provide gear to the local constabulary, mercenaries, militias, neighborhood watches and adventurers of a sufficient quality to allow them to properly defend the realm in which one lives (perhaps in attacks that the player character can be protected from by their customers).

Did you write this script before the acquisition of the franchise? It sure sounds like it. They are making a new one. I could swear you've acknowledged this before. This does bring up the question: what's the longest you've sat on a script for? It's pretty clear you put a lot of thought into how to humanize these. How many scripts you sitting on now waiting for Lord Susan to not fuck you over? What content could we be getting if another platform gave you more eyes without the eyesore problems?

I played this game not so long ago, and out of all the games in the series, this is the one that DESPERATELY NEEDS a remake. And it's not like we can't see how it could be, because V rising is basically it, just get rid of the multiplayer, slap Kain’s face in and BOOM, Blood Omen remake.
