The Shivanasamudra falls literally meaning Shiva's Sea are situated at a distance of 85 kms from Mysore and 120 kms from Bangalore. The island town of Shivanasamudra divides the river Cauvery into two different falls which display a captivating sight. On the one side it forms the Gaganachukki falls shaped like a large horsetail and on the other side are the Bharachukki Falls. The sight of these two falls is enchanting and the best time to visit them is during the monsoon. The falls are considered to be one among the 100 best waterfalls in the world. The World Waterfall Database ranked Shivanasamudra falls has world’s top 45 waterfalls among the world’s 100 waterfalls. Shivanasamudra Waterfalls are situated in Chamaraja Nagar District, at a distance of around 120 km from Bangalore. Route: Bangalore - Kanakapura - Malavalli - Shivanasamudra. The Shivanasamudra Waterfalls is on Kaveri River after the river has wound its way through the rocks and ravines of the Deccan Plateau and drops off to form waterfalls. The island town of Shivanasamudra divides the river into twin waterfalls. This creates the fourth largest island in the rivers course. It has an average width of 305 meters, a height of 98 m, and an average volume of 934 cubic meters / sec. This waterfall is 139 km from the city of Bangalore. The time of best flow is the monsoon season (July to October) of Indian Regional Area. Gaganachukki : The twin falls of Gaganachukki are best viewed from the Shivanasamudra watch tower. Asia's first hydroelectric power station was set up at this waterfall in the year 1905 and is still functional. Bharachukki : The waterfall has a fluid and graceful cascade along the side. Round boats are available here which will take you for a ride near the fall. Bharachukki Falls 145km from Bangalore is generally known as Shivanasamudra Falls. Gaganachukki Falls in Malavalli (Mandya district) bordering Chamarajnagar district is another falls which is also part of Shivasamudra Falls. The natural wonders have regained their glory all monsoon due to release of large quantity of water from Kabini dam. The two falls are separated by some 10km as the river splits into western and eastern branches resulting in Gaganachukki and Bharachukki falls respectively. The twin falls have come back to life given that huge quantity of floodwater is let out of Kabini dam in HD Kote, attracting visitors in hordes. This is a segmented waterfall. Segmented waterfalls occur where the water flow is broken into two or more channels before dropping over a cliff, resulting in multiple side by side waterfalls. The maximum recorded volume is 18,887 cubic meters / sec. It is a perennial waterfall. A misconception about these waterfalls is that the left segment is called Gaganachukki and the right segment is called Bharachukki. In reality the Bharachukki falls are a few kilometers to the south-west of the Gaganachukki falls. This is due to the Kaveri River itself splitting a few kilometers to the south into western and eastern branches. The western branch results in the twin waterfalls of Gaganachukki, whereas the eastern branch results in the Bharachukki falls. The Gaganachukki waterfalls are best viewed from the Shivanasamudra watch tower. Most of the pictures showing the twin waterfalls are taken from that location. There is another approach to the Gaganachukki falls from the Darga Hazrath Mardane Gaib (Imam Ali). Despite warnings being posted, people climb down the rocks and attempt to view the waterfalls from behind/top, resulting in many fatal accidents. It is 139 km from the city of Bangalore. Shivanasamudra is a small city in the Mandya District of the state of Karnataka, India. It is situated on the banks of the river Kaveri which forms here the boundary to the Chamarajanagar District and is the location of one of the first Hydro-electric Power stations in Asia which was set up in the year 1902. This is one of the oldest generating station in India, the electricity produced here was initially used in the Kolar Gold Fields. Thus Kolar Gold Fields became the first town in Asia to get hydro electricity. This video can be useful for the Indian or foreigner tourists for knowing natural site of India.
