    these bands sound way better than they do now! they sound like they're from the army. and the drum major was amazing!!

    • @patrickstarr2428
      @patrickstarr2428 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Drum Major was Trevor Scoville from RCSCC Admiral DeWolfe in Campbell River, BC. He was truly one-of-a-kind... the best drum major in Canada, IMHO.
      To think all these young men and women were about 15-18 years old... really a spectacular job.

    • @patrickstarr2428

      Also, the 1980s were truly the golden era for the Sea Cadets. They had considerably more funding than they do these days, and the training shows it.

      @@patrickstarr2428 I was in the 90s and they were clawing back funding and personel even then. Father was an officer for a long time. Due to cuts, and insurance rules it's a shadow of what it used to be. Haven't checked but I imagine Covid's made things even worse.

    • @patrickstarr2428

      @@zedas1 I couldn't agree more. My dad was the CO of RCSCC Port Augusta and we had the enormous good fortune of having much of HMCS Quadra's equipment and facilities at our disposal, plus the support of CFB Comox when we needed supplies for on-board weekends, and vessels like the YDT2 (I think an old mine sweeper) and occasionally YAGs when they came up from Victoria. Then, as you said, in the 90s cutbacks happened and everything was pared back to bare essentials. The Forces budgets were cut and of course that impacted the cadets too.
      I'm so grateful for the experience and sea cadets certainly made me a more well-rounded person.

      @@patrickstarr2428back in the 70s the Victoria area Cadets both Army and sea cadets had huge support from the Regular forces , Army then at Work Point Barracks PPCLI and CFB Esquimalt navel base , plus the local Militia units ,

    7.62 MM, FN (C1) Same rifle used by Canadian Forces at the time. They were used at Quadra for Ceremonial use and on the outdoor range.

      It was a privilege to use the FN in Cadet training, since it was a good change from training with the Enfields.

    I love when the band strikes up O Canada & God Save the Queen and everyone sings. These days I can rarely find anyone who isn't afraid to sing. I gladly do.

    I was lucky enough to see this live as a 12 year old cadet. There is hardly a day that goes by that I do not recall fond memories of my time at HMCS Quadra. Its something every canadain kid should experience.

    I could not believe some one had this, my copy was destroyed, brings me back can't believe it's been 30yrs. I watched some more current videos of the Ceremony of the Flags not even close we did some long nights preparing for that year. And I remember most of the drummers David Gates lead stick, Peter Prive 2nd lead, Neil Mckeever, Justin Edmund, the 4 of us originated from HMCS Rainbow Victoria. Dwayne Knutson was the Base Drummer and Trevor Scoville Drum Major unfortunately I can not remember the guy in the glasses or the girl I should remember them, hey its been 30 yrs

    From Australia. Watching the ceremony brought back memories of my Army Reserve days. Our unit was given the Freedom of the City. We spent a lot of time rehersing for a Beating of the Retreat. The drills were very similar with the SLR included Firing in Volleys. Had one poor guy not fix his bayonet properley and it came off during a present arms.

    This brings back HUGE memories for me! I was in the Guard for this Ceremony at Expo 86. At HMCS Quadra I was a Staff Cadet - Petty Officer 1st Class working in the Boatshed for the summer of 85 & 86. My home corps was 279 Bowmanville (Bowmanville, Ontario). The Drum Major was from Calgary I believe and the Chief Petty Officer of HMCS Quadra was Chief MacKenzie from Kitamat, B.C. Thank you to Bev Horning Bonner (OCdt Horning that Summer) for sharing this video with me.

      Thanks Paul. Not sure which summer you were at HMCS Quadra but one of the USNSC Escort Officers had a lasting impact on Quadra. LCdr Keith Kohanzo returned to Quadra as a senior staff officer for many years. He is still active with the USNSC program and a respected member of the Alumni Association of HMCS Quadra.

    Summer always brings back memories of Goose Spit, getty-jumping and guard practice every night as a staff cadet. All of it helped in my 21 years in the RCN and being a descent person. Thanks to all the adults that helped and help today to keep programmes like this across the country running.

In case you weren’t aware, the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet program is celebrating 100 years of service across the country this summer. Congratulations on your career with the RCN. 👍

      I believe the uniform has not changed, they are rather in T-1 instead of C-1, if you look closely the ones working the cannons are in C-1

    • @jonk987
      @jonk987 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but instead of having the White Uniforms (whities) we call them the band now uses the regular C-1 or just the Gunshirt. And I don’t think i know if you guys had C-4s (Navy work uniform looking type).
