    Uff
    It's kinda strange, but for me as a more or less young drummer (I'm 17 right now) i'm obviously influenced really hard by my favourite drummers (you're one of them, ya welcome dude), turns out; they're actually all Meinl Artists or at least play Meinl.
    And I thought 'there is.. something about this brand, got some cymbals from Meinl over the years and i am also in this rabbit hole of "tHaT's ThE oNlY CyMbAl bRaNd", yk?
    And despite the fact, that I like and also try other Brands, Meinl somehow feels kind of... good. It feels familiar, comfortable and they're just awesome sounding and looking cymbals, change my mind 🌚

    Hey Adam, if you have the time, I'd like some input from you on this subject. (And I'm sorry if this comment seems very long, I just want to be thorough)
    So, like many drummers out there, I've been "chasing the endorsement-dragon" for a while now. Partly of course because the extra support would be great (awesome gear costs a pretty penny) and because I'm also more and more active, both growing on social media platforms and playing with artists that are gradually getting more attention for the last few years.
    And therefore I've been tagging and mentioning the brands I use in my IG and TH-cam-posts, for lack of a better phrasing; as a way for "getting them to notice me."
    Of course, I know that the endorsement game is a 2-way street, mostly going for "What can I do for them", and not the other way around.
    My question is: Do you think I'm only hurting myself of doing so, since I'm basically just giving them free advertisement by tagging them in my post?
    I mean, if I tag them in my posts without being an official endorser - I'm kinda thinking "Why would they want to sign me, since I'm just showing off their products without getting anything out of it?"...
    Entertaining and useful videos as always, Adam! You're a great inspiration 💪

    Brand affinity is a weird thing. Totally agree that there a tons and tons of awesome gear. I take pride now in mixing cymbal brands, if I can play 3 different ones at once, great! Because it’s all about the sounds, and the noises a piece of gear makes in your hands. I’ve seen some blind tests recently, and that’s always funny, when people only get to hear the instrument, not see it, and miss out on “their snare” out of a selection. Great topic!

      I think an issue can be is if you're a "working drummer" but are young or not well off, it could be viewed as "unprofessional" to show up with a hodge podge selection of cymbals and a franken kit even though it could be the greatest sounding kit in the world

    Ive been a DW brand loyalist since my teen years.... im 36. im starting to branch out to other brands and try new things. i had a DW design series with some sabians for a few years, and never really feel in love with the drums totally. I just got a brand new Mapex Armory studio ease kit with some K Custom darks...and let me tell you... these things are amazing. point being, try new stuff. you dont know what you dont know, until you open your self to find out.

    For regular mortals who aren't endorsed it is limiting. I have zildjian, sabian and dream cymbals all are excellent. Hardware, depends on the needs at the time, availability and costs... But hardware is hardware. I might upgrade to a DW 5000 bass pedal as some point but that's down to reputation.
    I've also played on many kits, some sound amazing, some not so much as the owners ability to tune it properly is a significant factor. I've played a beautiful looking pearl reference that sounded crap, but a boring black mapex meridian birch which sounded amazing. There's so many wonderful toys out there.

    Drummers are the only ones that have to do this. If they are endorsed by say sabian, their entire set has to be sabian. not one zildjian can be present. You'd never see that on a pedalboard though. You'd never see a person with exclusively EQD pedals on it

    4:12 this is how the drum community should be, you can prefer what you want but after all every drum company benefits the drum community in one way or another so we should motivate each and every one of them to keep creating all these sick products that bring us all joy and pleasure.

    I hate the tribal nature that comes out with "brand loyalty" and its something that I've even been a part of back when I was a teen. Just because you prefer brand A doesn't mean Brand B sucks and if you're too tied up in Brand A, you may never realize that you actually like the stuff put out by Brand C. Adams been dropping straight up truth bombs on these Pods.

    I would stay true to my company until I would get a good deal, that I think would be great for me, I personally think that every company has great products, personally I prefer Meinl, cause they are a local company, and mostly because the first professional cymbal I’ve ever played was a Byzanz crash, and it was the best sound i have ever heard, and since then I’ve have played no other company except for a few times when I was playing a kit of a friend...
    When I buy new gear, I always think about looking into a different company, but then I think that Meinl has never disappointed me by now, so why should I risk it, and I always end up buying a Meinl again and again and again, but It definitely paid off 😂

    I personally cannot stand dry, dark cymbals. I'm a PAiSTe guy. In my loud setup I use RUDEs and In my soft, I use Signatue, PSTX and Giant Beat. I will give Meinl credit that they do dark, dry, Turkish better than Zildjian. If I wanted dry, dark, PAiSTe has Masters, Traditional ,602M.E. and Dark Energy. Everyone rips off Zildjian to start. Even PAiSTe did. However they developed alloys and sounds no one else had, especially when rock was getting big. Clarity and consistency is the reason I'm loyal. With my SQ1s I got a new set of cymbals. Thinner and easier to open up was my goal. Nailed it. Byzance is a cymbal phenomenon. Everyone from from jazz to metal is gobbling them up. Even the church drummers are all about 'em. Not me. It's just not my thing. The whole dry, dark thing has become generic to me. But that's why there are so many brands. Remember, The Dark Side of the Moon is 2002s. Just saying...

    This video should reach to as mamy drummers as possible. Im so glad you talk about this topic, I mean the whole thing "Im a Tama guy" or "Im a Sabian guy" annoys me more than anything else. Obviously by not telling any names I think everyone have spotted even once (at least I did) some guy who on social media says something like "I dont really like other cymbals because Im a Sabian guy" and after few months you see him posting about his endorsment with Meinl. I mean cmon man, just keep that thought for yourself dont say shit like that publicly..

    The parts about endorsements that kinda annoy me are 1.) that many people (especially in metal drumming I feel) seem to view being endorsed as a status symbol with the romanticized idea of getting free gear tossed their way immediately and 2.), a subject that's been touched in this video; when endorsed artists act like the brand they endorse is the only one in existence, the only one worthy of having the name spoken out loud and, almost, acting as if they fear losing their endorsement contracts when they simply acknowledge the fact, that more companies than their respective ones exist and produce high quality gear too.

  • @eastbaymauiboy
    @eastbaymauiboy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Totally, all the companies (except truly low end beginner brands) make great gear (cymbals, drums, hardware etc).
    In the past 10 years, I've had Sonor, Mapex, Crush and Tama drums, mostly Zildjian cymbals, but also some UFIP, Paiste, Sabian and Wuhan.
    Because of quality+price+availability I'm doing mostly Tama, Mapex and Zildjian right now, but I'm not married to any company. I like ALL the "high end" bits from pretty much everyone

    Oh man I loved this. I’m so guilty 😆 especially with cymbals. I think I’ve sold off and bought entire new sets just to make sure I stick with the same brand based on my new favorite cymbal. So dumb lol... I will say however that if you are looking for a very very specific sounding drum, you may be limited to one or two drum companies depending on your budget (I’m thinking of mahogany) ... maybe?

  • @JakeStaffin
    @JakeStaffin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only company I've ever felt "loyal" to is Sabian. My first cymbal was a Sabian B8 crash so I kinda just stuck with them when I started buying better gear (starting with their AA and AAX lines). It wasn't until I first went to PASIC where I really listened to all of their cymbals in person and realized that their sound just "makes sense" in my ears, so I stuck with them, and I've had some very nice conversations with the people running the company. But I've tried other cymbal brands, and I have no issue saying that there are a lot of wonderful sounding cymbals from all the companies, I just like the sound of Sabian the best for what I play.
    But with everything else, drums, hardware, heads, sticks, etc, it doesn't really matter as much to me. I have a Gretsch Catalina Maple and Yamaha Stage Custom, different sizes, used for different purposes, and different hardware selections for both, plus a bunch of snares to choose from with different head combos for different purposes. It's all about what feels the best to play for what I'm doing.

    DW, Paiste, Meinl. I bought all three because of the value and cost-benefit. I’d love a Sonor, but the cost doesn’t justify why I would spend so much since it’s purely recreational. DW haters can hate, but they are excellent drums.

    As lame as this may sound, this really came across me at the perfect time, my “ocd” (if you wanna call it that) side of my would just not let me get different cymbals from different match, like I wasn’t allowed to mix brands, like... why? I’m not endorse so why worry about that... thanks Adam!

  • @billbigler1366
    @billbigler1366 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Adam a great discussion in my view. I think there is a difference between professional drummers who have an endorsement and people like me who have to buy all of their gear. If there was a better after market drummers like me would switch more. Ebay is good to sell on but who bears the cost of shipping drums and cymbals is a big issue. These costs are high. So my kind of drummer is kind of locked into their current set unless they have gobs of discretionary money. I don't think I would buy another set and have the older set just sitting around, so I would want to sell it. I would love to switch to Pearl but just can't. If you know of a better after market approach I am all ears. Best regards.
