Intentionally striking a person in the head or neck is also not allowed and will also result in a penalty. So, yeah, that cleat to the face probably earned his team a penalty.
Oh, he was definitely penalized. He tried to hurdle but didn't jump high enough so he just changed his mind and kicked him directly in the face. A whole bunch of the yards he got on that return were erased because of it. Still one of the funniest things I've ever seen happen in a football game. I remember watching it live too.
when i was younger, i played football for a season. i was really good at running the ball for the exact reason these girls said. i was so scared of getting hit that i was just in complete survival mode. i only played a season because of it.
These guys are average 111kg of muscle and 1.88m tall but they are able to run so fast and jump so high. The football field is about 91m long so when you see them cross the whole field in seconds it's amazing! They are almost as fast as some track stars. And they can jump taller than each other, that's so crazy!

College Football Player here. If it makes anyone feel better, both teams are required to have team doctors to help players and ambulances just in case someone gets hurt. The pads aren't really used for protection, but more for weaponization of players. However, most of these players were trained since they were young (10ish is average) to take these kinds of hits, as well as learn how to keep themselves safe.
Every NFL player has played through an injury too. My parents had the privilege to meet Johnny Unitas before he passed and my dad said his hands were just wrecked from all the years of playing through broken, sprained, and jammed fingers.

The percentage of Americans following soccer may be lower than the percentage in other countries, but with a population of over 300 million, the raw number of supporters is very high. American football probably won't be dethroned, but basketball and soccer are seeing tremendous growing in popularity - especially when compared to baseball and hockey.
If you EVER make it to America be sure to attend a major college or pro football game. Get to the stadium early to enjoy the tailgate parties (pre game BBQ lunch) then go in and see/feel the vibe!!!
