You are great Prof Sachs, your analysis, your way of thinking and problem solving strategies are so sensible and thoughtful in relation to peace. The US just puts everyone in the ploughing field or be shot . Why , why do neutral Sweden and Finland want to throw away all their years of blistful happiness and tranquility to join Nato ? Have leaders been threatened or offered great benefits to join Nato ?
    A mind blogging question.

I would have been happy to see NATO go. But we should have had a look much earlier at building defense in Europe which is not reliant on the US. I can understand Sweden and Finland. If you hear how Russian 'diplomats' used to threaten them before to remain neutral....if a nation threatens you and continues to give threats...and then walks into another country that is not in NATO, I can see why they decided to join. I used to live in Sweden in the early 80ies. I was a child then but still remember the fear of Russia submarines... Both Germany and France kept a clear stance against Ukraine in NATO. Why did Russia not take this into account? As I understand it, Zelenskiy agreed to neutrality, but Russia then made quite a few other demands and then Bucha happened. I also have to say that it is Russia that blocks grain exports as well as steals it. I do not think Putin wanted to negotiate at that point. So now we are stuck and In the end Putin has now caused so much destruction that Europe cannot let it pass without serious weakening itself.

NATO is a US led alliance since the WWII, Russia nearly became member, but because the US did not share with Russia its advantages they followed different paths and became fierce competitors which led to the Cold War.
Without being very formal one could say the EU, NATO, and Russia are three Bolshevik constructs.
NATO, EU, and the Bolsheviks share the same host nation: Belgium. The rest is history.
I would probably agree with Jeffrey Sachs that Ukraine should be independent from NATO, and I add the EU, but then what compete in a complex world like the Czech Republic, or become member of the EU and lead the development charge ahead of Germany!? these and many other questions could be formulated.
There are many bets against Ukraine, and Putin can go all the way to nuclear, and it will force Ukraine to join NATO.
There are many independents fighting in Ukraine, and I doubt Ukraine alone can defend itself even with multi party logistics. They will never be on their own, if they get independence with foreign help on the ground, that is not independence by definition.
We have to see Oliver Stone documentaries on Ukraine, and in particular the testimony of Victor Medvedchuk ("Revealing Ukraine").

Smooth talk as hundreds about Russia imperial politics under Putin. Resembles Neville Chambarlaine way of thinking Germany an Hitler before WW2.
Probably that is why western politics have been so inefficient and unrealistic towards Russisn Empire since sine 1925 till now.
Will prof Sachs advise to get some conciliaion measures when China invades Taivan or Saudi Arabia?
Such ideas of politicians in western countries make me scared a lot.
Views of professor Sachs suggestthat he has not got any idea about of real drivers of communist politics.

When Mr Sachs comments in Finland and Sweden who should have given Ukraine advice in neutrality ....he just before commented on how Europe ha more inside knowledge. Maybe he could concede that is because if this that they do NOT advise it. Ukraine is not Finland or Sweden. You could argue that Ukraine is the cradle of Russian culture, not the other way around. This is not the same as with Sweden and Finland. My feeling is that old grievences are bubbling up everywhere against Russia with the start of the war. some Fins I talked to have told me about how they are always prepared for Russian invasion. Check out their private army. Germany has been very Pro Russian, and was only just recently not at all impressed with the US. Partly because of greed and partly because of their idea Wandel durch Handel and partly because of their guilt they taught themselves as being a friend toRussia. Russia did not care at all. In fact, in preparation to this war already the year before last, they started emptying and not refilling the biggest gas storage in Germany..previously bought by Russia...so legal . Is this how you behave towards a country you are supposedly friends with. I think Putin knew that an aggressive invasion of Ukraine would go too far even for cuddled-up Germany. Both Germany and France were vetoeing the joining of Ukraine into NATO..there were others. Russia has revived NATO. Shame. Mearsheimer is right. Might makes right. And it seems we are all 19th century beings after all.

I have never seen anything about the democratic leadership alliance support for peace process or the prosperity wherever’s.
How’s surprise for the BDB parties discussion with the Nato and the Defense leadership of the USA and the democratic alliance, which has never been properly to govern the national, because the ways of the Dollar be powerful again for resettlement from zero, how’s poor family of the world community to respond for the nonsense abnormal behavior in trusting ways with your attitude by yourself trapping yourself.
I hope it’s not my right if’s they will never leave the People in security at Russia or the Nuclear Warriors justifying😓.

🙏🏻, I learned the USA Today saying about the stagflation and the struggle people was the Russia aggression, and more overwhelming support mount of the budget for the Ukraine leadership. The highest price of the energy crisis overseas is by the democratic government gangs maintain the old unresolved and unresponsive in the democratic homeland government. How’s the mount of recessions doing by the pandemic violence and the has nothing really plans for the recovery process.
While the democratic took time for the blame for the Russia President, the same time of the Russia in solving conflict with the sanctions against Russian people.
How’s different ways of the democratic wisdom paralyzed for the vision for the people who elected the President at the democratic alliance of the Wes and the Uk government’s? How’s despairing doing for self power by the War’s of the Ukraine. If’s there’s the peace happening it must have been the USA Today and the Uk prime minister who made it for the over talks how’s strong they are.
If’s there’s no the USA how’s the world community will be more safe since the Nato invading world earth for robbing the natural rights of the national to have.
Why’d we have respect for the lawlessness of humanity rights and hunting for the benefit of them and killing humanity.?
The time passed by for the 6 months of the war’s attitude by the USA 🇺🇸 and the gangs proved themselves intentionally to confront with Russia, or else the leadership could never say to the people to live with struggle and wait for the War’s ending. How’s that been you doing for the Russia President and not responding anything for the USA people.
How’s mount of destroying the homeland security if’s you invading Russia, and you said it’s the Russia aggression?
How’s the West sanctioning doing with taking care of the Democratic image building to sanctioning themselves for the reasons of weaken the Russia by themselves warriors support. To rob the money for the Reconstruction of the Ukraine, when? If’s the democratic alliance support for the Nato to destroying the Russia sovereignty? How’s ironic😔?
Nothing for the democratic leadership to support the Un community even with the famine going on if’s the Russia warriors didn’t deploy out of the Snake islands.
    What’s theses people doing?
How’s mount of world destroying by you doing for 🐄 ways of self righteous freedom for humanity🙏🏻.

Can't we still pursue 'US primacy' without designating China or Russia as enemies? We can still attempt to compete to be the best without having to oppress or hinder our competitors, no? Why aren't you for a "US primacy' of this sort, Mr. Sachs?

I wouldn't sacrifice Ukraine's right to self determination and democracy too quickly. Democracy has been on the wain in the world for decades. If Democracy is seen as a weak alternative to dictators, that will not be a good thing for society. The West needs to make Russian aggression in Ukraine more trouble than it was worth as an example to would be aggressors around the world. Otherwise, it will encourage a repeat performance. The goal of debilitating their military and industrial capability seems like a reasonable, though costly approach. If we can afford it, the knock on benefits for world peace are likely to be great.
If Russian has to sit their in Donbas and drain their scarce resources holding onto territory they get no economic benefit, that would discourage them and others from embarking on the similar adventures in the future. It would be an Afghanistan situation. And know the Russians (and we) were forced out of Afghanistan eventually. The key is not to try not to make the Russian's fear invasion sparking a full blown nuclear response. However, this appears to be a non-issue given that the Ukraine does not have the population to invade and control Russia nor have they ever expressed a desire to.
But, there is no avoiding the fact that this is a dangerous situation. If we don't discourage Russia's adventurism, it will encourage other countries to develop a nuclear arsenal to protect themselves. There is no simple foolproof solution.

I find your argument the same old commonly held and bandied narrative. It’s based on certain assumptions about a existential battle between ‘democracy’ and ‘dictatorship’ which I think is deeply flawed. It serves the interests of nefarious and misguided elements in our countries and they are damaging everyone’s future for a moralistic and ideological agenda. I am afraid that argument has so many holes, that I don’t buy that!

    • @Thinking_Fast_And_Slow

@@thomaslau1214 if you don’t stand up to bullies, they will keep on bullying! NATO is a loose and often not very unified confederation of countries with diverse interests. NATO presents no threat of invasion against neighbors. It is a reactive organization that strengthens when it’s members feel threatened as we have seen from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia wasn’t afraid of NATO, Putin thought it would be ineffectual in the face of the Ukraine invasion. That’s why it invaded. Putin thought it would Crimea redux.

    • @thomaslau1214

@@Thinking_Fast_And_SlowActively expand NATO to surround a country is not aggression? US calling countries to suppress China development is not aggression? Who is the bully?

    • @Thinking_Fast_And_Slow
      @Thinking_Fast_And_Slow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@rp3875 it’s simpler than that. If you don’t stand up to bullies, they keep on bullying. Putin wasn’t threatened by the west or NATO. After Crimea, he thought NATO would be ineffectual again. So he invaded the Ukraine. So if you want to take Russia’s side on this, that’s your prerogative. But you wouldn’t be so quick to do it if you lived in a country that was on the border of Russia. Do you think any of them want to live under Russia’s beneficent rule? Do you want to encourage other dictators to make our place and invade their neighbors? What kind of world would we be living in then? Do you want us to just circle the wagons and stay in the United States where no one can invade us? Ask yourself, what country is the most popular destination when people are fleeing from dictators? Where did the Russians put their money? Where did the Chinese put their money? Where do they move to? They come to the United States for freedom and opportunity. Don’t you want to encourage that in all countries? Or should we just allow the bullies to run rampant when we have the opportunity to discourage them?
